3/9 What's a good linux program to use to image a hard disk?
I don't want to buy Ghost.
        \_ dd
\_ I bought ghost (norton systemworks, actually) for cheaps
           on craigslist ($20).
\_ I downloaded a free *nix installed from the net, booted from a
floppy, installed for free, and got dd for free and I don't have
to waste an entire box on windows either.
\- how do image an HD w/ dd?
                   \_ Something like: dd if=/dev/hda of=/tmp/hda.img
You might need the conv=osync or conv=notrunc
option along with the bs=<block size> option
since the default block size on linux is 1024b
while I think athat POSIX dd stipulates 512b.
\_ at least crank you bs to something large or
else your dd will take FOREVER
\_ Perhaps this is what you need: http://www.partimage.org
\_ nonononono, he needs 'dd'. That's it. It's free and it runs
              on all *nix platforms.

8/4 I went to Fry's for the first time in ages and was surprised to
see a 1T Seagate HD on sale. I'm still using my 250G and it's
only 60% full. What the heck do people put on their HD these
days, porn? I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy a
        1T drive for personal use.

5/17 My new 750G Seagate HD shows only 698G available. WHAT THE FUCK??
\_ 750G = 750*10^9 bytes. Your OS is probably measuring in 2^30 bytes.
           See GiB vs GB
\_ Also, disk drive manufacturers advertise "raw" storage, while
your O/S measures usable storage. You lose quite a bit to
disk label information, metadata and other various things.

11/15 [unrelated to politics] My debian machine at home (I'm learning and

5/11 If you noticed that your laptop HD never rests because it's doing
something, and you've already killed all auxilary processes and made
drives not "Fast Indexable", it's the explorer that's funky. Here
is one solution. Kill explorer and then run it again. You can use
        a batch file script:

5/11 I'd like to be able to use my mp3 player as a rescue os disk as well.
It shows up as USB HD on most OS. The mp3 player itself works fine
as long as I store all of the music on the first vfat partition. I'd
like to be able to either install linux onto the HD or store various
ISO images on the HD and have it boot from it, with menu, so I can
can select different images. Anyone know of such method?

5/5 I have a Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 80G HD that occasionally makes loud

3/23 I'm thinking about getting this laptop but the 60GB to 80GB upgrade

3/20 Poll for people who have only 1 HD (laptop for example). How did YOU
partition your HD and why? I'm thinking of putting all the games and
media data in one partition and leave the OS and VMWare files in
another partition. The rationale is that when I play games or do media
stuff I don't work, and when I work (on VMWare) I don't play games and

2/6 Our parent company is considering forbidding us from taking laptops

many of us work from home the majority of the time, this does not

Partition Image will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file. This is unlike the 'dd' command, which also copies empty blocks. Partition Image also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB. This is very useful to save partitions to an image in some cases: * First you can restore your linux partition if there is a problem (virus, file system errors, manipulation error) . When you have a problem, you just have to restore the partition, and after 10 minutes, you have the original partition. You can write the image to a CD-R if you don't want the image to use hard-disk space. For example, if you buy 50 PCs, with the same hardware, and you want to install the same linux systems on all 50 PCs, you will save a lot of time. Indeed, you just have to install on the first PC and create an image from it. For the 49 others, you can use the image file and Partition Image's restore function. Mailing lists switched to forums There are four mailing lists but we urge you to use 18 forums. You should still 19 subscribe to the partimage-announce mailing list if you want to receive an e-mail, when a new version is released. In this case, you will be able to save the partition into an image file, and you will be able to restore it after. If there is a problem when saving, an error message will be shown and you won't be able to continue. If you have successfully saved an NTFS NTFS partition, you shouldn't have problems as you restore it (except in the case of bugs). Then the best way is to try to save a partition to know if it is possible. If not, try to defragment it with diskeeper or another tool, and try to saving the partition again. Since there is a PPC version of Linux Mandrake, it's now easy to use Linux under PowerPC. A static binary version of the executables, and a bootable CD-Rom are also provided to ease the use partimage under iMac. If you can give us a such computer, please 28 contact us. If you are interested, please refer to 29 the contributions page. Several projects provide advanced boot/root disk and eltorito bootable CD-Rom to use partition image from a rescue disk: We recommand using SystemRescueCd since it's maitained by a member of the partimage project.
