10/12 "Climate Solution: Pay True Cost of Fossil Fuels, NASA Scientist Says"
        http://www.csua.org/u/xyg (news.yahoo.com)
\_ Sounds great, but it would be easier (though by no means easy)
to end the $5bn in fossil fuel tax subsidies the US has in place.
And that's merely a third of what we as a nation spend to
           subsidize fossil fuels.
\_ What other kind of subsidies are there?
\_ The GOP will never let it happen.
\_ It's strange that while the GOP supports low tax and small
government spending in general, they support taxing for the
purpose of subsidizing gasoline. Hypocracy? -- OP
\_ Old Boy Network: protect the rich, and steal from the
less rich. Cf. the I-didn't-need-gubmint-money malarkey.
\_ you mean the Democraps can never make it happen because
              they're pussies?
              \_ You'd need a real slash-and-burn hard-nose reformer to
do the job, and that would guarantee a one-term
presidency. No career politician could do it (with the
possible exception of Kucinich, but then we're just
                 being silly).
\_ It would require a filibuster proof majority in The
Senate, along with The House and The Presidency.
                 This ain't happening.

www.csua.org/u/xyg -> news.yahoo.com/climate-solution-pay-true-cost-fossil-fuels-nasa-195342090.html
com - Thu, Oct 11, 2012 NEW YORK -- Prominent climate scientist James Hansen has been warning that humans have brought the planet to a tipping point, after which changes, such as melting ice, can pick up momentum with potentially devastating effects. We can either continue with business as usual and addiction to fossil fuels, or we can put an honest price on carbon that makes fossil fuels pay their cost to society," Hansen told an audience at the State of the Planet Conference held here at Columbia University. effects of global warming, such as more extreme weather, Hansen said. His solution: a gradually rising fee attached to all fossil fuels at their mine or port of entry. A rising cost on greenhouse gas-producing fossil fuels would spur investment in clean alternatives, he said. Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and Lisa Goddard, director of the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, offered a climate science perspective during the conference, which focused on global sustainable development. Goddard focused on drought, and the need to anticipate climate extremes and manage their effects. She focused on a severe drought in southern Sudan, which, after two failed rainy seasons, has brought famine. It's difficult to attribute this drought directly to global climate change, since there has been no long-term trend in the precipitation in the region. Obama should have had a Franklin Roosevelt-style fireside chat with the nation shortly after his election, when his popularity was high, and explained the need to put a price on carbon, the primary ingredient in greenhouse gases, Hansen said. Obama did back a failed cap-and-trade proposal, which would have allowed clean companies to sell their leftover pollution credits to not-so-clean ones. When asked the implications of a victory for Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Hansen noted that he found the sway held by climate-change deniers over Republican candidates discouraging. "Nevertheless, the realities can be made clear to educated, intelligent people," he said. Milktoast o 1 hr 37 mins ago Without global catastrophe, humankind will proliferate beyond any capacity to maintain. Since there is no corporate profit in taking the good scientist's advise, we will tumble over the "tipping point" right on schedule. Corporations add the cost of the tax to their products so that they can make a profit. That is the difference between a direct cost and an indirect cost. Either way you pay, not some incorporeal entity known as an inc. "However, carbon dioxide as a result of MAN'S ACTIVITIES WAS ONLY 32 PER CENT of that, hence only 012 per cent of the greenhouse gases in total. Human-related methane, nitrogen dioxide and CFCs etc made similarly minuscule contributions to the effect: 0066, 0047 and 0046 per cent respectively. " 'That ought to be the end of the argument, there and then,' he said. IT TAKES AN APPALLING VANITY TO CONTINUE A "WE HAVE LEVERAGE" ARGUMENT ONCE FACED WITH THAT ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTIST'S TRUTH! Evidently, the CAGW-Kyoto Crowd consulted their Magic 8 Ball --not ALL "scientists"-- to arrive at THEIR "conclusion"! Like the SCIENTIST said, "That ought to be the end of the argument, there and then." Michael o 12 hrs ago My opinion is that the earth caused the evolution of humans with the sole purpose of transferring the carbon from deep in the soil to the atmosphere therby delaying the next ice age to protect the common wombat from extinction. Silk o 22 hrs ago "Nevertheless, the realities can be made clear to educated, intelligent people," Last informal survey I took at Yahoo reveals that there might be as many as four of us! Chang o 1 day 3 hrs ago Pollution and all its attendant unpleasantness is no recent phenomenon . With little need for artificial heat, smoke was not a great problem there , but in the cold climate of northern Europe, where warmth was necessary for survival, the situation was very different . In 1661 the diarist John Evelyn, in his " Fumifugium " , compared the smoke-palled city of London to ' the picture of Troy sacked by the Greeks or the approaches of Mount Hecla ' . Very soon, the growing use of coal as an industrial fuel , the concentration of population in manufacturing centres , and the rising chemical industry , aggravated old sources of irritation and created new ones. As early as 1863 the first Alkali Act obliged British soda manufacturers to absorb the clouds of hydrochloric acid fume formerly discharged into the atmosphere. Ever since , there has been a growing mass of legislation designed to restrict pollution of all kinds. rudaieo o 3 hrs ago Not against him or what he is saying, but the people that make these suggestions are very well-paid(both are Directors) and could afford a increase in the cost. Try selling this to a guy that's in a low-wage job, scraping to get buy and depends heavily on a car for their job. Long Time Gone o 10 hrs ago Well Mr Scientist, how about you get off your spotty behind and put your mind to work on an economical alternative to fossil fuels. We could use electricity generated by nuclear plants but you don't like nukes, wind and solar are not economical yet and may never be. I can tell you the solution must be cheap, clean, readily available at your corner store, relatively safe to store and use. Elliot 1 hr 39 mins ago Green mvt is horribly fractured. We have the hippie greens who resist everything, and the geologist greens who would like to see investment in nuclear (uranium or thorium) and natural gas with gov't oversight. sedentary o 1 day 6 hrs ago You can start by cutting out the subsidies (our tax dollars) given to these industries. That's a $14 dollar gift from every man, woman and child in the United States. Jeff 1 day 6 hrs ago Yeah, tax breaks against revenue coming in in the billions on fossil fuels vs. billions of loans and grants outlaid against almost no revenue coming in. me o 20 hrs ago I think we need more studies at tax payer expense, Hire me I'll make sure the results are confusing so as to create a permanent job, and or business where we can employ everyone. See problem solved, now back to the mindless sports games design to keep us busy with play time activies instead of getting involved with the real world. The price per watt of solar is actually about to be in parity with fossil fuels, so we are almost able to significantly cut down on our CO2 without putting a drain on people and their finances. whatsup 22 hrs ago I recently borrowed $40,000 to put solar on my home, the savings in electricity pays for the interest and principal payments on the loan with an additional 20% saving.
