6/4 http://www.willisms.com/archives/2005/04/trivia_tidbit_o_3.html Republican cars: Hummer (52%R 23%D), Porsche (59%R 27%D), Democrat cars: Volvo (44%D 32%R), Mini-van's kinda weird-- Republicans tend to have more children, 3.5 on average versus 1.7 for the Democrats. \- an associate of mine at the FED was kinda amused to see a car listed by BERNANKE. he was apparently selling a Siena minivan via the FED WEEB. \_ Are you sure about that factoid? Most immigrants are Democrats. \_ Not the ones that start/own their own businesses \_ I dunno why, but the Porsche seems kinda weird--how about a Camaro instead? Or something with badly done window tinting and a moon roof? -John \- there is a saying something like economics/demographics trumps \- there is a saying something like demographics trumps stereotypes. meaning income type predictors generally win over "cultural stereotypes" like "brie eating liberals" ... my understanding is the "money <-> republican <-> brie" connection is better than "marin county liberal and berkeley connection is better than "marin county liberals and berkeley grad students <-> expensive cheese". so porsche drivers -> few std dev above mean income -> higher probability of being R. now if you just compare +$75k cars, it might be interesting to see the different R/D compositions. \_ Childbearing stat sounds familiar. www.willisms.com/archives/2005/04/trivia_tidbit_o_3.html Tribute To Pope John Paul II, Through Time Magazine Covers. buyers of American cars tend to be Republican - except, for some reason, those who buy Pontiacs, who tend to be Democrats. Foreign-brand compact cars are usually bought by Democrats - but not Mini Coopers, which are bought by almost equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans. Porsche owners identified themselves as Republican more often than owners of any other cars, with 59 percent calling themselves Republicans, 27 percent Democrats and the rest either calling themselves independents or declining to answer. Jaguars and Land Rovers also registered as very "Republican" vehicles. Volvos were the most "Democratic" cars, by 44 to 32 percent, followed by Subarus and Hyundais. a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV was more than half again as likely to be bought by a Republican than by a Democrat, at 46 percent to 28. Among Hummer buyers, the Republican-to-Democrat ratio was a whopping 52 to 23. minivans skewed blue, just as Chely Wright surmised in her song. At first glance, this might seem odd, because Republican car buyers tended to have more children - 35 on average, versus 17 for the Democratic buyers. "A person in a red state will start with an average of 25 vehicles on the shopping list. buyers of the Toyota Prius hybrid were Democrats by a 35 to 22 percent. Democrats in general are more fond of smaller cars (the Ford Escort and Dodge Neon both skewed blue by about 34 to 20) The No. skew heavily Democratic, by 39 to 11 among last year's car buyers... Posted by: Marge at April 2, 2005 09:33 AM Buying a Prius is a bit of an intelligence test. First, you stop and think about how many places are going to be able to service your hybrid. Next, you think about what happens in a market with no competition and lots of demand. Finally, if you make it to the last step and buy a Prius to save on gas... |
