www.treehugger.com/files/2005/09/wip_energy_gene.php development of a backpack th at can generate around 7 watts of electricity, without solar cells, and actually providing a more comfortable backpack in the process. wave generators, the back pack harnesses body movements while hiking. The spring mechanism involve d appears to cushion the movement of the backpack on the wearer, leavi ng those who have tried it saying it is more comfortable then standard g ear. The net weight gain of the device only appears to be a few ounces. The backpack takes advantage of the external frame design, attaching the spring mechanism between the cargo compartment and the frame. The more w eight you have, and the harder you hike, the more energy you can gener ate. The best part for me is that 7 watts is more then enough to power m ost of you equipment, a 10 mile hike could charge your cell phone, GPS, and possibly more (by my calculations). The implications are amazing, an d the best part is, the device actually improves on the old non-spring standard. From the National Geographic News: "Why it works so well is unclearPerhaps the device reduces the mechanica l work required of muscles to walk while carrying a load." "Imagine that you step up on a rock with a rigid backpack. That weight ha s to go up instantlyit can't hang on the ground. Jacob at September 8, 2005 08:26 PM I really like this idea! Have anyone thought on harvesting the energy gen erated by people in treadmills? Posted by: Paula at September 8, 2005 09:18 PM This looks like a greta idea. The only thing that concerns me is the reci procating mass. I know when I've been backpacking, anything loose or bou ncing around in or on the pack can be very annoying. www.we-make-money-not-art.com/archives/006948.php University of Pennsylvania have developed a power-gener ating backpack. Dubbed "Suspended-load Backpack", the device converts me chanical energy from walking into electricity up to 74 Watts more t han enough energy to power several portable electronic devices at once. jpg The backpack is based on a rigid frame pack, but than being rigidly attac hed to the frame, the sack carrying the load is suspended from the frame by vertically oriented springs. It is the vertical movement of the back pack contents that provides the mechanical energy to drive a generator m ounted on the frame. "As humans walk, they vault over their extended leg , causing the hip to rise 5-7 centimeters on each step. "It is this vertical movement of the backp ack that ultimately powers electricity generation." The amount of power generated depends on how much weight is in the pack a nd how fast the wearer walks. With loads of 40 to 80 pounds, a wearer co uld constantly generate as much as 74 Watts while moving at a steady cl ip. Cell phones or night vision goggles require less than one Watt t o power. |
