a study published by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), up to 80% of the power needed by the whole country could be supplied by renewable energy sources by 2050.
solar energy sources, which are sometimes criticized due to their unpredictable output. This percentage, the NREL said, could be achieved using technologies already available today. Contribution by all 50 states is one of the keys to make it happen, with each state playing to its strengths.
IEEE Spectrum points out, for instance, wind capacity in the US should make the jump from its rough current estimate of 50 gigawatts to 439 gigawatts in 2050. To reach 439 gigawatts, more than 2,500 turbines have to be installed per year. A smarter power grid that can balance supply and demand from renewable energy sources is needed. This study, funded by the US Department of Energy, is a collaborative effort by a number of entities, including non-government organizations and universities. While it shows a bright future for renewable energy, only time will tell whether we truly will be able to make the shift.
Boone, Colorado o 2 hrs 3 mins ago I think homeowners would be much more likely to install solar panels if it were done at the time the house was built and the cost could be amortized over 30 years as part of the house. The added cost to the mortgage payments would probably be less than the owner would save in electricity.
Michael 25 mins ago Most single family homes don't have enough roof space to generate all the power needed to run the modern home. And even if it is big enough the roof needs to be south faceing. When they built these homes in the 50s 60s 70s, etc, they didn't think about those things. So, You still need to buy energy from the utility company. What we should focus on is making the Power companies convert to solar and wind so they aren't buying oil and UNclean coal to generate electricity.
San Francisco, California o 1 hr 6 mins ago The study appears to have forgotten all the environment hurdles required just get any construction done in America. Considering it's a study from a group advocating that work get done, I'll take it with a Titanic grain of salt. Beside isn't there a fair amount of permitting required? That can take years to get thorugh and double costs of projects.
You can get a solar system installed on your building within about a month, depending on the county you live in. Permits for solar are pretty easy and cheap to get, especially here in CA.
Don't forget how after that 1st Arab oil embargo in 1974 we were going to become energy independent. Instead, we are driving @ 85 in our brontomobiles and Big Oil has never been more profitable - and we've never been more dependent!
Camarillo, California o 5 hrs ago America, once upon a time, could envision a better self and then actually work to achieve it. If we had the same mind set then as we have now, we wouldn't have the transcontinental railway, national freeway system, distributed power systems, a space program that laid the groundwork for satellite communications. Heck, you wouldn't even have that little smart phone your sitting at Starbucks now with and spewing your defeatist diatribes onto the internet.
Gainesville, Florida o 23 mins ago Wind energy isn't cost effective and it would take far to many of them to be effective. We do need to keep working in that direction, but we also need to develop our gas and oil sources as well.
