In Afghanistan, nine people were killed in Friday protests, bringing to 1 6 the number of Afghans killed over the past three days in the country's worst anti-American demonstrations since the fall of Taliban regime. In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, hundreds of people held a peaceful protest. Also in Gaza, thousands of Palestinians took to the streets in a protest organized by Hamas resistance movement. Also hundreds Palestinians held protests in the West Bank city of Hebron. "The Holy Quran was defiled by the dirtiest of hands, by American hands," shouted one of the protesters at the Jabalya refugee camp in Gaza Strip . According to reporters present at the scene, some protesters burned US and Israeli flags. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged the Muslim na tions to resist calls for violence, saying that the US authorities are investigating the Quran "desecration" report. Analysts say that the recent scandal of US soldiers abusing the Holy Qu ran hurts the United States' reputation, already damaged with the releas e of disgracing photographs a year ago, showing US military personnel abusing and torturing Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib jail. Indonesia said those responsible must receive a "deserved punishment" for their "immoral action." And Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, said it was following the issu e with "deep indignation." "Demonstrations serve no purpose, we should do something practical. I am ready to blow myself up for the sake of my religion to embrace martyrdom ," said Mohamed Ghafoor, 18, a student protesting, Pakistan. In its report released on May 9, The Newsweek quoted sources as saying th at investigators probing abuse cases at Guantanamo found that interrogat ors "had placed copies of the Quran on toilets, and in at least one case flushed a holy book down the toilet." Currently, about 500 prisoners, mostly captured in Afghanistan and Pakist an, are held by the US at Guantanamo Bay. Analysts say that this was the worst anti-US protests in Afghanistan si nce Americans invaded the country. During weekly Friday prayers in Afghanistan, Islamic clerics told worship ers that protests over the desecration of Quran were justified. At least 100 people were wounded in Afghanistan protests that were held o ver the past three days.
