7/28 Platform: RedHat, Linux 2.4, don't have a choice to upgrade.
Problem: Downloaded acroread 7.0.8 because the default 5.0
that I got from "apt-get install acroread" thinks 5.0 is the
latest. Unfortunately 7.0.8 says my GTK version is not 2.4 or
higher. I tried "apt-get install gtk" and "gtk2" but apt-get
thinks they're the latest. What should I do?
\_ If you're not going to upgrade, you're going to have problems
installing vendor-compiled software. Upgrade, or install
gtk and gtk2 from source. You could also try something like
http://rpmfind.net to upgrade gtk to a version more recent than
your RedHat distribution supports, but resolving the
dependencies will be quite difficult. -tom
\_ Looks like he's using a debian based distro. You can always
try adding backports debian repository to install newer gtk.

\_ install gtk2 and other libraries from source in /usr/local/lib
and then tinker with LD_LIBRARY_PATH to get acroread to use
           that.

2/19 I program a lot by sshing to a Linux cluster. So I'm used to using
Xemacs to code. This works fine from a Linux or Windows workstation,
but sometimes I have to use a Mac. On Mac, the meta is usually
bound to option, but that often doesn't work over ssh for some reason.
This makes using emacs a real pain. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

8/26 Amazon medium instances (3.75GB RAM): 0.160/hour = $1382/year
Generic standard Linux VPS (4GB RAM): $480/year
Amazon costs more (but does offer superior scaling options).
\_ Amazon is $670 if you buy a year's usage up front (heavy util).
Why is heavy util less expensive than light util?

1/4 I want to test how my servers behave during a disk failure and
a RAID reconstruction so I want to simulate a hardware failure.
How can I do this in Linux without having to physically pull
a drive? These disks are behind a RAID card and run Linux. -ausman
\_ According to the Linux RAID wiki, you might be able to use mdadm

7/21 Can I just use ifconfig to expand my netmask on a FreeBSD box?
Are there any gotchas here? Linux forces me to restart my network

7/22 Playing with dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/<disk> on linux and bsd:
2 questions, on linux when <disk>==hda it always gives me this off
by one report i.e. Records out == records in-1 and says there is an

N-IX Connected Service Introduction You are running Debian stable, because you prefer the stable Debian tree. It runs great, there is just one problem: the software is a little bit outdated compared to other distributions. Backports are recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable (in a few cases only, eg security updates), so they will run without new libraries (wherever it is possible) on a stable Debian distribution. I recommend you to pick out single backports which fits your needs, and not to use all backports available here. We'll see no more updates for the packages in testing, and backporting xorg-x11 70 to sarge is a pain in the ass. So we need to stick with 69 at least for a while, which primary means we can't just take a newer package from testing/unstable to fix (security related) bugs.

rpmfind.net
You can get more informations and pictures (but slightly outdated). It was suffering from lack of memory and poor support for the on-board IDE chipset. However nice people have sent me a couple of memory DIMMs, this improved the situation a lot, thanks to Dennis G Allard and John D Robertson for their donation! Rpmfind locked within 2 days, so i decided to get rid of the BP6 and got what seems to be a stable motherboard (though of an older design) the Tyan Tiger 100. I hope I have now removed all the flacky hardware parts in the configuration and that it will stay stable in the future. Ads: You should see no ads on rpmfind, and as few graphics as possible for rpm2html output. I will stick with this policy as long as possible, thanks to W3C/MIT for providing the bandwidth. About ISO images: More and more distributions now provides a complete image of their install CD-ROM as an ISO9660 filesystem contained in a file. This is somewhat convenient but tend to hose the servers since a successful download will require a complete transfer of a 600+ MBytes file. Otherwise you are really unlikely to succeed and will hose one of those precious connection to someone who can actually complete the download. The protection is based on file permission, if the load is too high or there is already 25 ISO connections, then you won't be able to retrieve it. This is adjusted every minutes, just avoid peak hours or recheck from time to time. Also repetitive attempts results on the source host being banned access to rpmfind. Uploading to Rufus: This is getting a FAQ, so let's answer this one here. I mirror RedHat site twice a day, and rebuild the rpm2html and rpmfind indexes every morning (EST). Searching stuff on rufus: I provide an RPM search engine on rpmfind now (cf the form at the top of the page). However most people have a customized RPM based setup and their need is to install or upgrade stuff on their machine.
