5/18 On my Win7 machine, I've been using a PuTTY ssh session to soda as a
proxy for my FireFox to bypass my company's OpenDNS when I visit
http://tv.yahoo.com and so on. It has been working fine for a long while.
However, in the past couple weeks or so, my FireFox would either take
several minutes to load the page, or failes to load it after several
minutes. I haven't changed any settings on my Win7 machine. Rebooting

4/02 We use Perforce at work for revision control. It seems to work okay.
Lately, a lot of the newer developers are saying that Perforce
sucks and we should switch to Mercurial or Git. I have done some
searching on the Internet and some others have this opinion. Added
advantage is that Mercurial and Git are free. However, there would
be some work to switch for the sysadmins and the developers.

        doesn't actually work (ping6 <DEAD>ipv6.google.com<DEAD>, ping6 http://www.v6.facebook.com
        Is this expected to work?
\_ Soda doesn't have a real IPv6 address. The IPv6 addresses you see
in ifconfig are just link-local addresses; any IPv6-capable machine
will autogenerate these, whether or not it's connected to an IPv6

4/19 My Firefox 3.6.28 pops up a Software Update box that reads "Your
version of Firefox will soon be vulnerable to online attacks." Are
they planning to turn off some security feature in my version of
        Firefox?

I wait for the X.1 versions and they never come out.
\_ I'm also on 3.6.26. It claims that versions 4 - 10 are all faster
than 3.6.x, but do they use more memory? Thx.
\_ Newer Firefox versions use less memory too:

deutsch Features * Script autodetects IE * Displays switch splash screen to IE users * Switches people to Firefox * Three levels of seriousness * Google gives you referral money for switches * Infuriates Microsoft Still need Firefox yourself? Grab it here: Your Mission: Get Under 50 What percentage of visits to your site are with Internet Explorer? If it's more than 50%, you've got some serious work cut out for you... Think how psyched you would be if less than 50% of your sites' visitors used IE. Here's how it works: if you want to you can turn on code in those scripts that will pass stats to our site about the percentage of IE users who visit. We've thought about doing something like this for a while now, and Google's "bounty" sealed the deal. If we make some referral money ourselves, we get to do more stuff like this. Why we made Explorer Destroyer Other miscellaneous stuff Here's some miscellaneous bits of information and wiseass remarks that we didn't know how to fit in the page. Caveat: the only catch is it's Firefox + Google Toolbar and you only get $1 for users in "certain locations" (presumably rich countries). Slogan idea: It's like Google is your sponsor in the MS Readathon, except it's the MS Fuckoverathon** and you keep the money! For each person you switch, Google gives you $1, Microsoft loses marketshare, and an angel gets its wings. Screenshot of the script in action (also see the demos below). Google is paying $1 for each new Firefox user you refer. Now you can advance your ideals, save people from popups and spyware hell, and make some serious money. Millions of people have heard about Firefox and are ready to switch--all they need is a friendly push. They're specially formulated to give just the right push, maximizing souls-saved and dollars-for-you. Three settings: Gentle, Semi-serious, and Dead-serious When you install the script on your site, you can decide how much force you want to use to convince your users to switch away from the dark side: Level 1: Gentle Encouragement Rating: $$ Visitors using IE see a message encouraging them to download Firefox (with a download link) running across the top of the page. Level 1 Demo >> (the demo will pretend you are using IE) Level 2: Semi-serious Rating: $$$$ Visitors using IE get a friendly splash page encouraging them to download Firefox. There's a download link, and a link to continue on to your site. Level 2 Demo >> (the demo will pretend you are using IE) Update: Xavier sent us this modified version of level 2 that will only show the splash page occasionally. Level 3: Dead serious Rating: $$$$$$ You've never considered blocking IE users from viewing your site, even though you hate IE with a passion that burns hotter than Hades. Now you have a practical excuse to do what you've always dreamed of. IE users will see a friendly message stating that they need to download and install Firefox to view your site. This script will do the most good and make you the most money. Level 3 Demo >> (the demo will pretend you are using IE) Squid Proxy version Joe sent in this "configuration for the open-source Squid proxy to deny users of IE access through the proxy. This way, Squid administrators can force a sweeping change across their entire userbase, not just the ones who visit Explorer Destroyer-supporting sites." I mean, if your friend was dating a really obnoxious guy who smelled bad and slept around, you wouldn't just put a dump him button on your livejournal and expect the problem to get solved. If Firefox doesn't get more users fast, Microsoft could be determining the future of the web. Those are high stakes, so it's time to take things up a notch. If most of your users use Internet Explorer, then you need Explorer Destroyer more than anyone. Sites with a lot of Internet Explorer users will also make the most money from Google Firefox referral fees, since you have more people to convert. If most of your users don't use Internet Explorer, then Explorer Destroyer is a perfect way to convince the rest of you users to switch. Most of your readers will never even notice it's there and you'll be doing a good deed at the same time. transfer of wealth from Google to you as you participate in their affiliate program (yes, this is a joke). Sites where less than 50% of readers use IE Coming soon...
