DMA Getting off mailing lists/Mail Preference Service To receive less commercial advertising mail, you can register for The DMA 's Mail Preference Service (MPS).
See below for more information abou t MPS Please note, The DMA does not provide marketers with consumer mailing lis ts or do consumer mailings. Rather, the Mail Preference Service is avail able to companies for the sole purpose of removing your name and address from their mailing lists. This service does not apply to mail sent to y our business address, or to "resident/occupant" mail.
below will allow you to significantly reduce the amount of unsolicited national advertising you receive at home. You may register with MPS by filling out this form, then clicking on the submit button.
When you register with MPS, your name and address are placed on a "do-not -mail" file. All DMA members are required to run their list of prospecti ve customers against the MPS file, to remove the individuals who have re gistered with MPS from their mailings. The service is also available to non-members of The DMA, so that all marketers may take advantage of this service to eliminate the names of those who wish to receive less unsoli cited mail. This "do not mail" file is updated monthly and distributed four times a y ear -- January, April, July, and October (some mailers receive the file monthly). Your name remains on file for five years, after which time you may register again. Typically you will see the amount of mail you receive begin to decrease a pproximately three months after your name is entered onto the quarterly file. You are likely to see the impact of MPS faster if you register onl ine than if you mail in your registration. Also, if you move, you must r egister your new address with MPS to have it affect your new address. Although registration with MPS will help to reduce the amount of unsolici ted mail that you receive, it will not stop all unsolicited mail. You ma y continue to receive mail from companies with which you already do busi ness and from non-DMA organizations which do not use MPS In addition, y ou may continue to receive mail from local merchants, professional and a lumni associations, political candidates and office holders. You may reduce the sol icitations you receive from a specific company by writing directly to th at company and asking to be put on the company's in-house suppress file. Sometimes sexually oriented advertising (SOA) comes to my house. The U S Postal Service maintains a list of people who do not want SOA m ail coming to their home, and provides the list to companies that mail s uch promotions. Contact your local Post Office and ask for Form 2150 or Form 1500 to stop mail from a particular company. A company told me they got my name from The DMA, and I should call you to get my name taken off its list. The DMA doesn't have lists or give names to any marketing company except to remove the names of consumers who want less mail. DMA cannot take you r name off XYZ Company's list -- only that company can. Ask the XYZ Comp any to place your name on the company's in-house suppress file so that i t will not send any further mail to you. Why am I still getting mail addressed to my ex-spouse when that person ha s never lived at this address? In the past, your name and your ex-spouse's name were at the same address . It is quite common that when your address changed, your ex-spouse's na me was included with that change. Your ex-spouse probably receives mail addressed to you, as well. You may wish to contact the company sending mail to your ex-spouse at you r address and ask to have that name and address added to the company's i n-house suppress file. You may also wish to check with the three major c redit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) and any othe r companies with which you do business to be sure your ex-spouse's name is no longer part of your current credit or business record. Can consumers who like to shop by mail limit their volume of solicitation s? When you place an order or make a donation, write or ask the company not to rent your name to other companies or organizations. If you receive advertising mail at work from companies that also send adv ertising mail to your home address, let the company know you are receivi ng duplicate catalogs or promotions and tell them which is the correct a ddress to send mail and which address to delete. Mail of a business-to-business nature received at your business address w ill not be affected by registration with MPS Business names and address es are not placed on the file, and companies which send mail of a busine ss-to-business nature do not use the consumer file.
