12/30 Shit, I finally remember what used to be there before Wall Berlin
        and someone pulls the thread.
\_ bastard! what was in the building pre-wall?
\_ Cafe Durant, but it's still there, isn't it? Aren't they all
              in the same building?
\_ what was... in the space... that USED TO BE
wall berlin. no it's not cafe durant. cafe
durant is ABOVE the old wall berlin space.
Wall Berlin is closed now, the space is going
to become a tea house. what was there BEFORE
WALL BERLIN. I will kill you all.
\_ It was some crappy sandwich place. I remember
eating there before it closed. Let me rattle
my brain some more and see if I can remember
                    the name.
                    \_ Togo's?
\_ no togo's was on bancroft.
incidentally why is that lot on Telegraph still vacant?
\_ Evil Rasputin's guy owns the lot. Doesn't want
                   Amoeba to expand.
\_ so why not build housing? or does he think
students who live there... might shop at Amoeba?
I guess that actaully makes sense in some weird
                   way.
\_ I dunno. How much property tax does he have to spend
                      every year on that lot?
\_ Is that all you can think about?
                         Go back to russia, jewboy.

8/1 Suppose your house is already paid off and you retire at 65.
How much expense does one expect to spend a year, in the Bay
Area? Property tax will be about $10K/year for a modest $850K
        home. What about other stuff?
\_ I think at age 65, health insurance is the next biggest expense.
\_ I am thinking that we can have a nice middle class

6/3 Why are "real estate" and "real property" called so? Does the part
"real" mean something like "not fake"?
\- without going into a long discourse into common law,
it is to distinguish land/fixed property from intangible
property [like a patent] and movable, personal property,
like your car. Real property has historically had special

3/10 I'm trying to help my parents, in their mortgage there's an
"escrow" amount. What exactly is this? From reading Google,
the loan company uses the escrow account to pay for home
insurance, but they've been paying home insurance themselves.
I'm really confused on what this fee is.
\_ Without an escrow account, you write checks to your insurance

12/15 Does anyone have experience investing in apartment buildings
I'm not really looking to invest, but I want an apartment
to live in, and I'm not happy with the leases I'm encountering
for instance one requires 2 years of tax returns with the
application. I'm in a position to buy a building, but I've
got no experience with this, and I don't want to learn that

Poor cities pay more % of prop tax than wealthy cities.
        Compton pays 1.5% prop tax.
\_ poor people also pay more for groceries. and taxes and in general
everything. It's why rich people stay rich. I love $2 country
           club burgers!
