1/26 Wozniak says the the Steve Jobs movie clip is historically inaccurate,
that Jobs was not so much a visionaire that Jobs claimed to be, as Jobs
was just looking to make a few quick bucks. Why should we trust
        Woz's words over Jobs'?
\_ Seriously? Read both the Steve Jobs biography and Woz's autobiography.
Nobody contests that Jobs was a scumbag. Also: the lounge in Soda Hall.

autobiography. Nobody contests that Jobs was a scumbag. Also:
           the lounge in Soda Hall.
\_ Jobs screwed over a lot of people, it is true, especially
people working for him. But I still think that he was a
              visionary.
\_ Woz's point is that the visionary part came later. The
romantic notion that the movie will portray will likely
                 be misguided.
\_ Life is unfair. No one defends the dead man. The last man to live wins!

\_ people defending a lying asshole... life is unfair
\_ I come to bury Jobs, not to praise him.
           The evil that men do lives after them;
           The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Jobs.

10/11 What will GOOG report for earnings next week? Good news?
\_ They will report revenue growth and massive earnings. GOOG is
notoriously and intentionally tight-lipped about guidance, which
means the analyst estimates are all over the place, so it's hard
to say what people would take as good news. A lot more may hinge
           on the content of the conference call than on the actual numbers;
everyone knows they're going to report huge earnings. Current
analyst estimates are between 3.7B and 4.16B quarterly revs,
           between 4.46 and 5.39/share earnings. Personally I think they'll
have higher revs with in-line earnings: call it $4.5B revs, $5/share
earnings as a guess. I hazard no guess as to what the stock will

everyone has prejudices based on their experiences. If you see
green berries are poisonous but blue ones taste good, you might
think all green berries are poisonous. It's human nature. He's
not using bred in the genetic sense. It's kind of jumbled and
I haven't seen the original source but he apparently means
"we have reactions that our experiences have bred in us, that
don't go away, and can come out in the wrong way." "Breed" has
a generic meaning in addition to literal sexual reproduction.

7/9 Respondents were split over the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision rejecting

percent approve of the decision, 36 percent disapprove and 32 percent
said they don't know. But the idea of race more broadly being a factor
in education or business is a solidly unpopular one. Eight in 10 (82
percent) of adults say race should not be allowed as a factor in making
a decision about employment or education; only 14 percent think it

have figured this out. In fact that bit of advice is "less powerful"
than the Golden Rule ... the negative prescription doesnt address
what are your affimative obligations to others, the fact that human
evil is not the only source of harm [natural catastrophe, disease],
or the problem of what do about those who will not follow that
dictum [just war, law], nor how to allocate resource, a large
problem in the area of ethics in public policy.

\_ Power Shmouer, I prefer my moral platitudes to be *right* rather
than powerful. Just because some weak willed tool WANTS someone
to keep him from falling off the wagon (by rule of law or
whatever other means), or keep the dangerous ideas of communists
or Satans out of his head, does not mean I want him doing that
unto me. Some of us prefer the Confucian version of the golden
rule, and see it's lack of "power" as a plus. -phuqm (!top)
\- i am not sure what your interpretation of "power" here
is but i mean it in the sense of "theoretical power",
meaning it covers a lot of cases, as opposed to being
                 narrow or situational.
\_ My intent, was to use *your* definition, which, tnx, I
didn't really need you to define. 1) because i got it.
                     2) because it doesn't matter, almost regardelss, my point
is going to stand. "breadth", or any other characteristic
of the western golden rule you want to hold out as a
positive characteristic is less important to me than the
fact that I *don't want* people doing unto me just becuse
they would have me do unto them. Get it?
rule, and see it's lack of "power" as a plus. Anyway, the vast
majority of world problems would in fact be taken care of if
people managed (they could not) to "do no harm." As for resources,
The majority of famines in this day and age can be linked to
political causes as opposed to natural scarcity. -phuqm (!top)

And a better way to ask this question is can you
determine if a number is a power of two in O(1) time.
\_ None of your operations are truly O(1).
A naive solution like doing a bunch of & operations
is just as O(1) by your criteria.
\_ In modern processors all 3 operations
                          ( &, &&, and -) are constant time.
That makes it O(1). The naive solution on the
other hand is O(n) where n is the number of bits
in an integer. If you double the width of the
integer the time to check doubles. That's not
O(1) in any way shape or form.
\_ That's my point. Those operations are only
constant time up to a certain number of bits.
After that it's going to cost you, e.g. with
                             bigints.
\_ By the same reasoning, lg(n)<64 so it's constant
                             time as well.
\_ I think it is pretty obvious you don't
                                understand bigO notation.
                    \_ So you're assuming unsigned and twos-complement?

guessing that a nuclear sub would have something way way
better imaging in all directions, not just along the axis
of travel of the boat. Something or someone fucked up, and
I'm guessing the real story will not be reported in the news.
\_ How funny. I thought the same thing when I read the same news article.
\_ Active sonar maps fairly well. Subs are often trying to run
silent, and active sonar defeats that. They rely on charing
                 done by surface ships.
\_ In sufficiently deep waters there's a certain depth at
which sound speed stops decreasing with depth (because of
colder water) and starts increasing (because of increasing
pressure). If you put your sub on the bottom side of this
depth it impedes the ability of surface ships to detect you
because the change in sound speeds reflects some of your
sounds back down. If you have a ship running silent (with
their depth-on-keel gague off) and trying to keep under
this fixed depth, you could have a problem if the water is
not too deep and there's a charting error. So... what you
                    said.
\_ This is a lot of congecture based largely on Clancy novels
and watching Hunt for Red October, but I think the difference
between fishing boat sonar and nuclear sub sonar is that
fishing boats use active sonar and subs try to stay hidden
and use passive sonar. With passive sonar, you would rely
mostly on accurate sea floor maps for navigation. If mis-
calculate speed, heading, or time then you could be off course
enough to hit things you are trying to avoid in tight spaces.
I'm not sure they still use innertial navigation. It definitely
              seems plausible. -saarp
\_ I believe they use high freq sonar for getting through
icy regions without giving themselves away. Perhaps
there's something similar they use for keel depth?
\_ How funny. I thought the same thing when I read the same news
           article.

them if they don't carry any form of identification? How many
        of the 80000 is identified?
\_ They don't. A huge number of bodies are being buried in
mass graves, in many cases being shoved in by a
catterpillar truck, because they pose a serious disease
threat. This is happening by the thousands.
\_ May they rest in peace....
\_ Part of the plea for help is for forensic experts and large

\-i think dealing with the dead bodies is for human/psych/relig
reasons, not as a source of disease. --psb
\_ it's for all of those reasons. with tens of thousands
of dead bodies, infections are bound to be abundant.
\-this is not the primary source of infection. it is
fecal matter in water supply. this is not a case
of getting rid of the bodies of people who died of
an infectious disease [like in the black death or
                     ebola etc].
\_ It's also just common sense. If there's 500 dead
dead bodies where you live, are you going to let them
sit in the equatorial sun for a week while you dig
individual graves? No, you say a prayer and dump them
in a mass grave before the smell gets too horrid.
\_ So in other words, it's impossible to tell
who had actually died, because just counting
the bodies is even sometimes impossible. So I
guess if someone is missing, they will be

unorganized and when you're out in the field you're

\_ These are very different ideas. Belief in an
impersonal force which refrains from direct
interaction with the universe admits for the
           possible existence of other metaphysical
constructs, such as an afterlife. If you deny
the existence of anything metaphysical, you are
           stuck with just the physical.
\_ So you're just kind of hoping for an afterlife. No real
reasoning behind it. I guess my point is: what's the meaning
of this possible afterlife? It seems like people just project
the existential questions of this mortal life into this
afterlife, and that settles that. But what do you do in that
afterlife? And if you believe that the universe is running
purely on physics then your life is tied to the physical
processes of your body anyway (a soul is not physical).
Of course, evidence tells this anyway (physical changes
to the brain and brain chemistry directly affect people's
minds). Personally I think the human race has the theoretical
capacity to create "heaven" right here on Earth, and elsewhere.
We just aren't quite advanced enough, don't focus all our
energies toward it, and most of us complacently accept the
standard religious placebos that avoid the question. I like
to think that we ourselves collectively hold, in some measure,
the power of our own salvation.
