The conclusions of the 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues was renounced by 10 of its 13 authors and later retracted by the medical journal Lancet, where it was published. Still, the suggestion the MMR shot was connected to autism spooked parents worldwide and immunization rates for measles, mumps and rubella have never fully recovered. A new examination found, by comparing the reported diagnoses in the paper to hospital records, that Wakefield and colleagues altered facts about patients in their study. The analysis, by British journalist Brian Deer, found that despite the claim in Wakefield's paper that the 12 children studied were normal until they had the MMR shot, five had previously documented developmental problems. Deer also found that all the cases were somehow misrepresented when he compared data from medical records and the children's parents.
Vaccine for rare cancer approved Wakefield could not be reached for comment despite repeated calls and requests to the publisher of his recent book, which claims there is a connection between vaccines and autism that has been ignored by the medical establishment. Wakefield now lives in the US where he enjoys a vocal following including celebrity supporters like Jenny McCarthy. Deer's article was paid for by the Sunday Times of London and Britain's Channel 4 television network. It was published online Thursday in the medical journal, BMJ In an accompanying editorial, BMJ editor Fiona Godlee and colleagues called Wakefield's study "an elaborate fraud." They said Wakefield's work in other journals should be examined to see if it should be retracted. Last May, Wakefield was stripped of his right to practice medicine in Britain. Many other published studies have shown no connection between the MMR vaccination and autism. But measles has surged since Wakefield's paper was published and there are sporadic outbreaks in Europe and the US In 2008, measles was deemed endemic in England and Wales.
There MAY have been studies on the effects of one or two vaccinations, but I sincerely doubt there has been careful follow up on a reasonable representation of vaccinated children from birth to maturity, neurological changes, serum mercury and aluminium changes etc etc etc, with a comparison group of non vaccinated children during the trial period.. Most vaccinations depress the immune system - some make it hyper-reactive. It is inevitable that this continuous onslaught against the developing body, brain and immune system of a child WILL have consequences. And is not always the preservatives or the vaccines themselves which cause the problems - sometimes it is the adjuncts (chemicals that increase the effect so less vaccine is required), sometimes there is an allergic reaction to the mediums in which the vaccines are bred. eg - chickenpox is rarely deadly, and most of the itching during chickenpox can be skipped if concentrated sugars are omitted from the child's diet. Of course, there will always be parents who complete a full schedule for their children in the expectation that this will mean minimal disruption to the parental career and social life through sickness in their children. Unless they have ensured that their child is raised with good clean minimally processed foods, clean air and water, and adequate exercise and UVb exposure they are likely to obtain the opposite result. What many people fail to appreciate is that Edward Jenner did not use smallpox to vaccinate against smallpox. He used COWpox, which shared many characteristics with smallpox, but which was far less devastating - and he put the liquid from an actual cowpox sore into cuts on the skin of a healthy child. No preservatives, no adjuncts, no mercury, no aluminium.
Report Abuse And it is also past due for there to be a study which tracks the development of a large group of vaccinated children from birth with an equal number of non vaccinated children - say Amish and Quakers and possibly even Jehovah's witnesses. Said study should include both objective and subjective comments from medical professionals and parents, and provide as full a medical history as possible.
Report Abuse We have seen in many occasions how healthy babies became autistic after Triple Vaccination was given in the third world countries like ours. The authorities should consider single vaccination at a time with spacing, without heeding to these type of bogus reports, financed by drug companies.
Report Abuse Also, symptoms of autism show up around the same time that babies are due to be vaccinated, so I don't think that makes sense. I would rather have an autistic child than one dead with disease.
Report Abuse Those of you who think we parents are 'NUTS" for not vaccinating our newborn babies and children, understand most of us have done a ton of research on vaccines and children with Autism and some of us have personal experience with children with Autism. All we ask of you who are in favor of vaccinations, PLEASE do the same.
