9/21 Have you dumped a girl in this way before? (Sep 18-19 entries)
\_ To be fair to the guy, he didn't dump her for cable. He
           dumped her for satellite.
\_ It might have been Hi-Def for all we know.
\_ It sounds like he wanted to dump her any way and was relieved
when she finally got the hint.
\_ No, I once refused to talk anymore to an ex who was verbally
abusive and harrassing me with hourly phone calls all night,
           but nothing like that
\_ I had a friend who took his gf to the movies - but she wanted
to watch a Disney movie, he vehemently did not want to - they
basically parted ways, and it was over.
\_ So he gave up access to sex in favor of avoiding a Disney
movie. The guy is a fricking genius.
\_ Only in Seinfeld do people break up for stupid reasons
like that. It's more like the episode made the guy
realize he didn't want to deal with her anymore.
\_ actually, they just became friends with benefits.

9/20 I'm reading the csua politburo minutes. Since when did CSUA become
more HKN/UPE like? I don't ever remember the mentoring thing.
CSUA was primarily a casual social club. We used to hang out
for foodp, lunchp, SF trips, party at nweaver's place, vollyball,
and such. We didn't attempt to mentor anyone or make CSUA
serious and boring. That's what HKN and UPE's mentoring programs
are for. What the hell happened?
\_ Current politburo, with minor exception, is a bunch of n00bs who
have only been at Berkeley a year and see that HKN/UPE have
participation and immediately assume that the way to get us out
of our little participation slump is to become HKN/UPE. We need
politburo members with clue and experience rather than "ooh, that's
shiney" syndrome. - jvarga, bitter alumni
\_ This makes me feel ancient. -dans
\_ The original charter of CSUA 3 decades ago, was NOT to be
technically helpful. It was meant to be the OPPOSITE. You know,
the protest, the fun, casual non-conformist club. You guys
totally fucked up the original vision of CSUA. Please dismantle
anything helpful and educational like the mentoring crap ASAP.
\_ Why are you bitter? And alumni is plural. -anal English major
\_ Anal English major should remember that bitter this bitter
alumnUS likes to sorry accounts at random (it comes with
being bitter... go figure). Who are you to say that I
did not develop severe multiple personality disorder during
my torture^H^H^H^H^H^H^Htime at Berkeley? - jvarga
\_ Don't you have to graduate in order to be called an
\_ The Alumni Association defines "alumnus", for the
purpose of getting more money, as anyone who has
taken 12 units or more at Berkeley. I think mconst
once pointed out that nothing says that you have to
have passed those 12 units. I have the alumni
association piece of junk card to prove that I have
taken 12 units. All it costs is $40 or so to be a
                       Berkeley alumni! - jvarga
\_ What are you talking about? The mentoring program is in,
what, it's 3rd year? I don't think anyone currently in
politburo was even there. Hey! mrauser and awall aren't first
              years, I've been trolled! -jrleek
\_ We realized that nerd-culture is dying and people are becoming
way more introverted. It also seemed silly to get $3-4k per year
from ASUC and EECS and to just use it to eat food. I didn't
think adding mentoring-director to politburo, but its a great
position that helps a lot of younger students. It also
helps our club to become more relevant to the dept.
\_ The "useful" stuff is cool, but do you guys still do the "fun"

9/21 The company I work at has a pretty decent additional price drop on
        this phone:
Any general thoughts? I am currently a Verzion customer and was
wondering if anyone had any relevent thoughts on Sprint. I currently
have the option of extending my current contract with Verizon and
getting another cheapo free phone or go to Sprint. So my general
        questions are the following:
        1. Sprint... customer service?
        2. General nastiness and stupid clauseness of their plans?
        3. I'm not an active follower of the cell phone market. How reasonable
           are their rates and plans?
        4. I know the phone is new, but any thoughts on that general type of
device? Will I end up just getting screwed by a plan that makes
me pay to use the features of the phone?
        5. Anything else?

9/21 Why is the Chinese black egg black? Is it safe to eat? What chemical
compound made it black? It looks like lead, but it's yummy.
\_ You mean thousand year old egg? I think that's duck egg preserved
           in tea.
\_ It's funny that the thousand year old egg was featured in Fear
Factor. When I saw that episode, I'm like "I'll eat it without
              a prize."
\_ Koreans sometimes soak hard boiled eggs in watered down soy
sause. They turn brown. Those are pretty tasty too.
\_ The Japanese do something similar for oden. Cf. the egg in
vinegar science trick. (The egg in oden is not as rubbery...)
\_ Let me tell you something *REALLY* scary... *TRADITIONALLY* those
'thousand year old egg' was made by marinating the egg in
*HORSE PISS*. No, I am not kidding. We don't do it in horse
piss anymore, if you are really interested in this, I can find out.
It bothers me that how my ancestors one day came up with this idea
"let me soak egg in this and see how's taste..."
\_ Well it's not as bad as the famous Shit Eating German porn.
\_ I have a guess as to why urine was pissed. A disgruntled
chef in the Dynasty thought it'd be funny to serve the
emperor egg that is dipped in urine. It turns out the
emperor liked it so much that it's an official dish.
Uh, seriously though, that's just an urban legend. Black
eggs are black because of charcoal, tea, and other things.
     <-- see?
\_ Like how we grow mushrooms on cold horse shit?
\_ No way, you're shitting me!!!

\_ Nothing beats your Shit Eating German porn. How the hell
did you guys come up with that stuff. It is just sick.
\_ I hate to sound like a freak, but piss in general has a lot of
really useful properties (all that ammonia, etc.). Pre-Industrial
really useful properties (all that urea, etc.). Pre-Industrial
folks had a lot of uses for it, including medicine and laundry.

9/21 Anyone have T-Mobile? How's their coverage? They look like a much
        better deal than, say, Verizon.
        \_ I have sprint, T-mobile, and AT&T/Cingular (don't ask), and
T-mobile seems to be be the best of the 3, coverage wise. However
T-mobile's internet/GPRS coverage appears to be the suck ; I can
get online *maybe* 10% of the time time.
\_ T-Mobile coverage is fine outdoors, but some areas, like
inside buildings on Berkeley campus and parts of Daly City are
non-existant. T-mobile's GPRS does suck more than other Sprint
              or Cingular.
\_ I had Verizon, then AT&T, then T-Mobile. I found Verizon the best
in terms of coverage. AT&T is better at my workplace in Foster
City, but T-Mobile is better at my home in Fremont.

\_ I am amazed by your sense of scale... for a Cal graduate.
\_ Aside from adding energy to the whole storm system and giving
any debris carried by the water heavy radioactive contamination,
no. Hurricanes are pretty large and energetic; I suspect a nuke
large enough to dsirupt a hurricane would likely be so large, that
large enough to disrupt a hurricane would likely be so large, that
the nuke presented a greater threat than the hurricane.
the nuke would present a greater threat than the hurricane.
\_ The hurricane would spread the fallout over a larger area than

9/21 What's the benefit of ECC RAM?
\_ When the RAM has a bit error it alerts you about it and
attempts to correct it. There is an extra 'parity bit' that
works like such bits do in RAIDs. Without ECC RAM you have no
idea if your data is corrupt or not. Always buy ECC RAM for
data you care about. I recommend always buying it if your
           motherboard supports it.
\_ Is there EC RAM which you still have an idea if your data is
corrupt or not, although not being able to correct it?
\_ That would be called parity.
\_ There is. It's just called 'parity RAM' but I never see
it (or support for it). It seems ECC has rendered plain
                 old parity RAM obsolete.
\_ See, it works like this: if you have only 8 bits
in your RAM line, (RAM stored by bytes), you can
add a chip and get 9 bits: 8 data, and parity.
If you have 32 bits in your RAM line, you can add 4
bits and do ECC on those 32 bits. So ECC RAM is
party RAM, it's just stupid not to do ECC since you
have 4 bits per 32 instead of just 1 per 8. All RAM
these days is at least 32 bits "wide", so everyone
                    just does ECC.... --PM
\_ Yes, but you can still just 'check' the data and
not correct it, but why do it when ECC is so much more
useful and can check 2 bits (and correct 1) instead of
                       just checking 1?
\_ the idea is that the more parity bits you have,
the higher you probability of catching the error.
with only 1 bit, you'll not catch anything. with
4 bits, you catch more. but with 4 bits, you
might as well correct as well.
                          \_ Why can't I catch 1-bit errors with 1-bit parity?

9/21 Hurricanes? Cut taxes on the rich! (
\_ You could cut/raise taxes on the poor, but what would it
matter? Any meaningful change in tax rates/revenues comes at
the expense of/for the benefit of the rich. It's redundant to
           mention it.
\_ Nobody would mention it when it's at the exepnse of the rich.
\_ and nobody would mention it when it's banckrolled by China.
\_ People seem to think that the Republicans are cutting taxes to
do X Y and Z when it's just because they like cutting taxes.
War in Iraq? Cut taxes. Record deficit? Cut taxes. Hurricanes?
cut taxes. Energy crisis? Cut taxes!
\_ Republicans are cutting taxes because they get most of their
campaign contribution via the riches and corporations.
\_ Maybe you youngins don't remember this but Reaganomics was the
reason why the US economy boomed and kicked ass. The money from
the rich are funneled down to the poor and everyone benefits.
You guys want to go back to the fiscal irresponsible
European, Clinton, Democrat, and whatever socialist programs
that prove to be inefficient? Be my guest.
\_ are you serious about this? How about FDR's New Deal?
\_ Yeah SS worked out real well.
\_ Do you like your little dream world?
\_ SS is working so well now is because your
"reaganomics" used the SS surplus on starwars, my friend
\_ 70 years and counting of no more retirees in the
poor house or forced to eat cat food. I think it has
been the best anti-poverty program ever.
\_ are you talking about the fiscally irresponsible clinton
programs that resulted in a budget surplus? fuckwit.
\_ The surplus was due to George H Bush's tax raise but for some
odd reason you Democrats keep taking credit for it. I can't

                 Chinese commiegate, Lewinskygate, Willeygate, Pardongate,
and what not. Clinton has been nothing but a great
                 embarrasement to our nation.
\_ That's cock suckee, not cock sucker. Get it right!
\_ I can't tell if this is a troll or is coming out
from a real believer. What do you guys think?
\_ It's distractingate thatgate you usegate 'gate' on
every othergate wordgate. It kind of undergatemines any

\_ Funny. His approval rating was never as low as Bush's..
Also funny, the rest of the world liked us under Clinton.
And, really, pardongate? Do you know who Bush I pardoned?
Your side persecuted Clinton for inconsequential mini-
scandals, mostly of your own making. Bush is running us
into the fucking ground and all you do is wonder to your
navel how clinton made him do it.
p.s. Since you always seem to need the reminder, Clinton
                    ain't presnit no more.
p.p.s Are you so threatened in your philosophy that you
feel you must nuke other people's statements?
\_ I can see it now. It's 2014, and Jeb Bush is in his
second term. The U.S. has just defaulted on it's
loans, the dollar is worth less than the paper it's
printed on, people are walking down ruined highways
in mass exodous from unsustainable suburban
developements, a couple major cities have been taken out
by nukes Bush didn't want to help the Russians secure,
and jblack will be posting to the motd about how it's
                       STILL Clinton's fault.
\_ Stop the denial. It IS Clinton's fault. !jblack
                 \_ Not to mention jblackgate.
\_ Thanks a lot for making me pine for the days when scandals
were just silly little embarassments unlike Bush's which
result in the deaths of thousands ... Vince Fostergate?
Someone commits suicide and it's a scandal? Or do you
believe like Rush Limbaugh if anyone dies within a radius
of 100 miles of either Clinton it's automatically their
                    fault unless proven otherwise?
\_ Yes, our standing in the world community was greatly
raised when we exchanged Clinton for Bush. We used to
                    \_ BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahaha hehheh heh. *ahem*
                       Thanks, man, I needed that.
                    get no respect at all.
\_ Standing in the world community? Who cares what
a bunch of 2 bit cheese eating surrender monkeys
think? If we weren't around bombing the heathens
and keeping the peace the "world community" would
be praying to allah to keep their pansy asses from
                       getting burned at the stake.
\_ Troopergate? Didn't those guys admit they made the
whole thing up for $30k each from Scaife? It is pretty
funny and kind of sad that all you have left to keep
you going is hate for a guy who has been retired and
out of office for 5 years now. Let it go, man.
\_ Most of the Clinton scandals were either lies or
small potatoes dressed up by rightwing haters who
couldn't stand that Clinton was taking a lot of
conservative ideas (the good ones) and implementing
                           them properly.
