Technorati Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 Updated: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 6:21 PM EDT Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin brought her version of the "Straight Talk Express" to Northeast Pennsylvania today, wowing thousands of supporters during a rally in Scranton. The Alaska governor, accompanied by her husband, Todd, and country music performer Lee Greenwood, spent almost 40 minutes at the Riverfront Sports Complex talking up GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain and contrasting his positions with those of Democratic rival Sen. Photo gallery The boisterous crowd, estimated at around 4,500, interrupted her speech several times with chants of, "Sarah! In discussing Mr McCain's plans to get American back on the road to energy independence, Mrs Palin called it a national security issue. The governor said there is more coal in the United States than there is oil in Saudi Arabia and promised Pennsylvania, with its coal reserves, will have a key role to play. "Drill, baby, drill, and mine, baby, mine," Mrs Palin said as the crowd roared its approval. She accused the Democrat of voting to raise taxes 94 times and said Americans will face higher taxes if he is elected. "America just can't afford another big spender in the White House," she said. There were no incendiary outbursts from the crowd about Mr Obama during Mrs Palin's speech, as there have been during other recent McCain-Palin rallies. during Republican congressional candidate Chris Hackett's remarks before Mrs Palin took the stage. The outburst came during a round of booing from the crowd after Mr Hackett said Mr Obama should come to Pennsylvania and learn what the state's values are. After her speech she spent just over 30 minutes signing autographs. "Just once it would sure would be nice if he would, just once, say he wants America to win. As the mother of one of those troops over in Iraq, John McCain is the kind of man I want as commander in Chief." "We believe that America is not the problem, we believe that America is the solution. We still believe that America is still that shining city on the hill." She then concluded her speech and began greeting supporters. "Joe Biden has said that there's no such thing as clean coal. He said, as a matter of fact, even if there were clean coal, in an Obama administration it would be fine if say, China used it, but it wouldn't be used here at home. That's nonsense" "We will drill here, and we will drill now," she exclaimed. Palin continued her talk about the McCain economic plan and struggling home owners. "We want to give them a hand-up, not a hand-out - to help them keep their homes." What do you do when you're in a hole and you don't want to be there? She said that John McCain would eliminate the federal deficit and help jump-start the economy. "America is deep in debt an he (Barack Obama) will get us in deeper. America can not afford another big spender in the White House." loudly as she thanked American military personnel for their service. "Our country is facing tough times, and we need a leader who's ready to lead on day one. A man who's ready to take this country in a new direction," she said of her running-mate John McCain. Palin, accompanied by her husband, Todd, walked onstage to a rousing reception by the Riverfront Sports crowd as the theme from "Rocky" played. After acknowledging "Hockey moms, soccer moms, baseball moms," Gov. He then asked everyone to put their hands on their hearts and help him sing the National Anthem. The sound crew then cued up the song the crowd expected Greenwood to perform, and he burst into his hit "God Bless the USA" 1:40 pm The press pool has arrived at Riverfront Sports. Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly. Supporters have been noted shouting "kill him," "terrorist," "off with his head" and other equally incendiary terms about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Others have directly suggested Mr Obama is a Muslim, which he is not, or a traitor. Some comments even drew rebuke from Republican presidential nominee John McCain. Other than the lone man, there were no other such outbursts. Country band The Farmer's Daughter is performing for the standing-room-only crowd. They played a version of the Lynyrd Skynyrd anthem "Sweet Home Alabama" but substituted "Pennsylvania" in the lyrics. Reporters at the scene said it appears that everyone who wants to attend the Palin rally will be able to get in. One man walked the length of the line shouting out "reminders" to those waiting that " loaded firearms are not allowed inside." Gregory's Academy in Elmhurst were juggling and performing as they waited to go through security. Gregory's, said he had two reasonS for bringing the students to the rally. "To show support for Sarah Palin with regards to her pro-life stance. When asked about some of the anti-Obama outbursts from people at previous Palin/McCain rallies, Mr Matthews said " It's not what a gentleman or a Christian should do." Also on hand was a crew from "The Daily Show," and correspondent John Oliver who was interviewing people on their way in. Ed Conrad, 46, of Scranton, a Republican who is still undecided whom he'll be voting for in November, said campaign buttons are a hot selling item. At least half of the crowd is wearing red, as suggested by a local group called Democrats for McCain. Cindy Castellani, 33, of Lakeville, was wearing a red sweater and pushing her 9-month-old daughter Lilian, also wearing red, in a stroller. She said, "I want to hear Sarah speak in person about how she's going to change Washington. I was not convinced about John (McCain), but it has everything to do with Sarah now." The event is scheduled to start at 1 pm, but by 9 am several hundred people already were waiting in line to get in. By the time doors opened at 11 am, the line stretched several hundred yards along the levee behind the complex and continued to West Olive Street. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Paul Benitez, 46, of Archbald, when asked why he was there so early. Several tents were set up outside of the venue, selling McCain/Palin buttons, stickers, T-shirts and other memorabilia. Times-Tribune staff writers Laura Legere, Charles Schillinger, Denis O'Malley, Gretchen Wintermantel, and Borys Krawczeniuk contributed to this report. " gwpriester wrote on Oct 14, 2008 2:33 PM: " I can only hope that residents of Scranton are intelligent enough to see how wrong Mrs Palin is. and that she and John McCain have been running a despicable campaign of lies, smears and distortions. Mrs Palin and Mr McCain have nothing to offer and so they try to question the character and patriotism of Mr Obama. In contrast, Mr Obama and Mr Biden have been campaigning on the issues and offering solutions to the problems that threaten all of us. There should be no place in this country for the kind of hateful racist campaign Mr McCain and Mrs Palin are waging. " Maddie wrote on Oct 14, 2008 2:36 PM: " I hope that racist idiot was handcuffed and taken away by the Secret Service. I guess it is too much to ask the politicians to admonish such hate. They stirred the pot with their hateful messaging, innuendos and lies. Then these bottom feeders in their audience go after the carrot McPailn dangled in front of them. Say the word "Obama" at a McCain/Palin rally and you will get hateful, racist, destructive and dangerous responses. If something violent happens to anyone it will be on Palin and McCain and those that stood by and did nothing. " Barbara Ledermann wr...

this blood-curdling moment at a Sarah Palin rally in Pennsylvania today, courtesy of the Times-Tribune: Chris Hackett addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the arrival of Gov. Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly. No word on whether Hackett, who was -- ahem -- warming up the crowd for Palin, suggested that this isn't really considered acceptable political rhetoric. user-pic I remember the 90s all too well to think that there was anything "tongue in cheek" about that statement. We can only hope that the Secret Service is going to investigate and prosecute this jackass. And we can also hope that the media will bring as much scrutiny to bear on Palin and her coterie of inciters. user-pic The point isn't the people in the crowd, or what they say, even though the McCain campaign has done an outstanding job of confusing the media about this. The point is that no prominent Republican has responded negatively when the outrageous response occur. Contrast their sleazy behavior with Obama's behavior from yesterday "no, no, we don't need that" in response to booing at the mention of Mccain's name. user-pic Are we at the point where the secret service will start stepping in when stuff like this happens? McCain's campaign has repeatedly shown they're willing to let statements like this stand with no action, so somebody is going to have to do something. These hateful people were there all along, but they've now been given a voice and some encouragement to spew their bile. It only takes a few of them to incite more on-the-fence folks to grab their own pitchforks. user-pic The Secret Service has already intervened - that's the only conceivable explanation for McCain backing down at rallies last week. There's no confirmation because the Secret Service never, EVER, discusses protection matters. As someone on this board said last week, Obama is the Secret Service's Super Bowl. They are pulling out all the stops and will not hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect him. shout from week before last and I'm sure they're already on this one. And just because Palin's detail is tasked with protecting her doesn't mean they're not going to report threats to Obama or any other protectee. user-pic Do you think telling the squad of machine gun brandishing commandos at the airport that "the bomb" you were referring to was the in-flight movie would keep you from being indicted? user-pic The SS detail with Palin is looking out for threats to Palin, they aren't looking to hush up lunatics at a Palin rally who are hollering about Obama. Now, if the righwing lunatics start hollering at Barack at one of his rallies, you will see decisive SS action in a New York second. user-pic They need to re-examine their job description then. If there are threats being made in their presence, it's their job to take action. They should remove the offender from the crowd and take them to see Obama's secret service protection. I mean, basically you're saying that Secret Service protective detail should be required to uncover their protectee anytime they hear a threat to another protectee. Let's say I and two of my methed out Nazi tattoo wearing buddies want to do harm to a Secret Service protectee. We smuggle our Desert Eagles into a crowd where he's shaking hands, but we can't get a clear shot because of his Secret Service detail. If we try to distract them by having one of us shout out a threat to our target, the Secret Service will just shove his head down, swarm him and hustle him over to the bullet proof SUV and bodily toss him in. However, let's say some well intentioned person forced Secret Service protective details to deal with threats made to other Secret Service protectees that are made in their presence. Now all I have to do is have one of my accomplices shout out a threat to the protectee's opponent. Do you really want Obama's detail to have to uncover him and go bust someone who shouted out a threat to Palin at his rally? user-pic If the secret service is really as inept as you seem to be implying, then I should be a lot more frightened for Barack than I already am. I hope the secret service can manage two things at the same time. user-pic It's a federal crime to threaten the life of a president. Is it a crime to threaten the life of a presidential candidate? If not, the Secret Service should be laying down the law to all the speakers at McShame-Failin rallies not to foment this kind of response. user-pic As I was saying above, though, saying "kill 'em" also is a figure of speech. Could someone tell me how the USSS handles things like this? It's not like someone is actually giving a specific threat, no matter how distasteful this is. user-pic Selling your soul for political gain: Priceless Actually, McCain has demonstrated amply well that doing so is pretty cheap. Look how easily he jettisoned his "straight-talk" brand for a few lousy mouth-breather votes. user-pic This morning I heard NPR's "talk of the nation" open with an explanation that the nasty tone of the campaign is the fault of both candidates; that McCain's desperate attempts to depict Obama as part of a 60s terrorist organization are equivalent to Obama's responses concerning the Keating Five scandal which McCain actually participated in; and that if some of the things shouted at McCain rallies are "shocking", well, "so are some of the comments obama supporters are making about McCain's age", or something like that. More of this false equivalency BS so the wingnuts won't be mean to them. A smear and a reminder of McSame's action are not now, nor will they ever be similar. And the MSM are truly astonished when people say they are part of the problem. But I expect them to get the facts straight and present them without prejudice, instead of this stupid "Oh, I said something mean about McCain; user-pic MCC, I'm listening to Talk of the Nation right now here in NH. Did you hear the woman who claimed Obama donated "millions" to ACORN? And that ACORN indoctrinates young children to be liberals? And that Obama is not a US citizen but the Democrats are covering it up? user-pic It's laughable to think of indoctrinating someone to be a liberal. But since these right-wingers don't think for themselves, it's hard for them to conceive of children actually being brought up that way. What is WRONG with this country, when all too many try to say that bringing up a known, documented, investigated financial scandal is akin to egging on a crowd to the point of shouting death threats? user-pic The press keeps doing that and it's really starting to tick me off. He was trying to equate the often sarcastic tone on her show to these violent outbursts by obvious nutjobs. There should be ZERO tolerance of this sort of thing from the media, theMcCain campaign, their surrogates, and the right-wing pundits. You combine this sort of rhetoric with economic insecurity, racism, and xenophobia and something terrible is going to happen. "Fair and balanced" just means veering sharply away from reality. There are actual differences in philosophies and political positions that create imbalances. To portray this society in a "fair and balanced" manner is to automatically portray it falsely. At various times in our history, various political philosophies have dominated. Typically, the dominate party and/or philosophy is guilty of more corruption, more lying, and more destruction. But in our history, both parties have never, ever been equal in their doings and dealings at the same point in time. There is no equivalence or balance or symmetry in reality. That you believe with all your heart and soul that the sun appears to rise in the west and set in the east doesn't make it true. Rejection of that objective truth should be cause for canceling one's voting rights. user-pic "so are some of the comments obama supporters are making about McCain's age", McCain himself made that point to Dana Bash yesterday, and despite the fact that there is no evidence to support his claim, Bash just let it pass. user-pic I would put forth that the duo on the GOP ...
