3/20 Anyone remember that old comic from Dragon, Yamara? "More weird than funny" indeed. http://yamara.com/yamara/index.php \_ "Wormy" was a lot weirder. \_ Eh, Wormy wasn't that weird -- it was pretty straightforward semi-narrative fantasy. What made it quirky was the use of traditional badguys as the protagonists. Now, Roman Dirge's stuff, or perhaps Jhonen Vazquez's JTHM *that* is weird. -mice \_ Maybe so, but Yamara was trying to be funny. \_ Yeahhh...the art style on the first page of the Yamara link kind of squicked me out, so I'll take your word for it. Wormy was generally pretty pleasing to the eye (comparatively, at least). -mice \_ Yeah, Yamara's art got more and more busy as time went on. It started out ok, but was pretty much unreadable near the end. They were just trying to stuff way too much into a few panels. \_ I've been told that Sluggy Freelance is kind of moving in that direction. I stopped reading it regularly after I was laid off in '01, but people have been telling me that it's gotten progressively busier and takes more work to read. Oh well. -mice \_ Ah, but the payoff is richer. The "That Which Redeems" story-arc won awards for the payoff. Cf. Achewood. --erikred \_ Is it? I mean, I'd be willing to put up with more text etc if the payoff is there, but I've heard for current Sluggy, it's not. I never quite forgave sluggy for giving the DoP to that Bruno the Bandit guy and his endless stream of scatological humor. -mice \_ I repeat, the "That Which Redeems" arc was worth it. The "Timeless Seas" arc, well, not so sure about that one. And yeah, the DoP guy was definitely Not Funny. They have a Saturday guy now who's actually funny and very obviously a fan of the comic. --e-red \_ Hmm, okay. I guess I'll give it a try and see how the 'Elevator to Hell' arc reads. Hopefully is doesn't suck. Thanks for the info! -mice \_ Wormy archive: http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/haroog/archive/Archive.htm |

yamara.com/yamara/index.php By June of 1995, when this strip fell due, TSR had already agreed to let us to go to a full-page format. But first, following the 15-month-long run of "Hard Fun", the new editorship, itself unfamiliar with our story, wanted us to recap who everybody was. This seems to have confused everyone at Dragon, so we didn't mind the do-over, with only a nominal reference to Ralph's dimensional challenges. After all, having been given a whole new format, we figured we owed them their request for a refresher. Four months later, Yamara would be gone from the magazine for good. There's a tall, muscular Howdy Doody vampire in the background of panel five... I think Chris just started drawing a vampire there, he looked a little like Howdy, so he added freckles and a scarf to make him look more like Howdy. Back at panel three, there are two female vampires bearing a striking resemblance to Eddy and Patsy, the characters played by Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous. This is spun out from an in-joke in the authors own private stash, about what would happen if the AbFab banshees discovered vampirism. life and make claim to the fashion world that they had been the ones to "discover undeath"- through Forever Knight's LaCroix, sweetie. We had entire plots sketched out about Saffy trying in vain to stop her mother's idiotic course; the typical discordant screaming match while Eddy levitated drunkenly around, knocking over the garlic and exorcists that happened to be there. We felt an Eddy vampire wearing a big "LaCroix" necklace was enough of a joke to include it. Yamara(TM) and all characters and likenesses are trademarks of Manui & Adams. |
www.angelfire.com/wa2/haroog/archive/Archive.htm leaderboard ad The Wormy Archive Here is my Wormy archive. I do have to appologize for some of the images, with limited web space and so many files, sacrifices had to be made. The demon creates havoc, the trolls escape and Catfish takes the demon out. Ace tells Wormy about running into the Storm Giant who was asking about him. The spectacular entrance to Toad Town as only Tramp could have done it. Irv and Fred make it to Skeeter's Grove and Barney doesn't like hitlist games. Irving and Fred putting up "for hire" posters and Jed overhears them talking. Talking to Charly at the Stump and suckin' back a few Trolls Choke beers. Frank and Larry meet up with Amos and find out what is in store for them. |
