The SaltwaterPizza Blog Google Search Friday, September 03, 2004 Star Wars - The Not-So-Special Edition Okay, I've got this friend. He grew up a Star Wars fan, had all the action figures, read all the comics, etc, etc, etc. He loves to go the speed limit and cross streets at crosswalks. But sometimes his desires to obey the law and relive his childhood conflict with one another. Recently, my friend told me how unhappy he was with the Special Edition of Star Wars. I tried to calm him down, but my friend proceeded to tell me he never wanted to own a Special Edition copy of Star Wars. I told him George Lucas was prepping the original Star Wars trilogy for DVD release on September 21st, and tried to convince him that the benefit of having Star Wars on DVD should surely offset his disappointment with the Special Edition.
download a perfect copy of Star Wars ripped from a pre-Special Edition Laserdisc. It took the movie five days to download, but my friend said that once it finished, he was able to watch the movie in all its old 1977 glory. It even had an optional commentary track you could listen to throughout the movie.
A New New Hope from Savior Machine Scott Niven bring up a good point with the new Star Wars Special Edition even though it is in DVD it is really crap. I've seen some screenshots of the edits and they look horrible.
Tracked on September 4, 2004 08:26 AM Comments Just buy the DVD set and then replace the crapped-up film with the original. And no, I don't have nay qualms about downloading the original movie if a director decides to destroy a film and then force us to buy it.
Ray | September 4, 2004 08:03 PM You should spend more time listening to your friend. Star Wars isnt what it is because of uber l33t effects, its got story and character and something everyone can identify with. The SE version is a bunch of unnecessary crap that GL want to see if he could pull off, so that way he could go forth and create the prequil crapology. I have no intentions of getting the movie on DVD, unless there is a "Play Movie Without SE Crap" feature. Posted by: Tevanos | September 6, 2004 05:36 AM I bought my Star Wars DVDs in China last March. There's no commentary, but the subtitles make up for it, they're so funny, ie.
i went out and bought a laserdisc player and a SW:ANH laserdisc off ebay. We had a showing and then popped in a VHS of the special edition and cued it up to the "greedo shooting first" scene. It is horrid, but I had to admit that the colors of the special edition were much more vibrant and modern (which I liked). I wonder if the "definitive collection" laserdisc or the other late 80's early 90's reprint was done cleaner than the early 80's one I have. There's always the Phantom Edit approach =) rampy Posted by: | September 7, 2004 11:04 AM I've held onto my laserdisc player for the last few years just because I couldn't get Star Wars on DVD, but the special edition release is reason enough to keep the thing and keep my memories intact. Sure I'll get the SE DVDs because I have a 6 year old nephew who won't know the difference and as he grows up he'll look at my laserdisc version as edited or maybe even a rough cut from his point of view. If George was so bent on livening up that scene why didn't he keep the bit with Solo makin out with Jenny?
