8/4 I'm heading to St. Louis for a couple of days later this month.
If you have any non-arch-based ideas for stuff to do, pls advise,
although evenings more likely to be free than daytimes.
Food recs welcome too, particularly near Washington University.
BTW, are there any TSEliot-related interesting things at WU?
ok tnx. --psb
\_ My mom relocated to Springfield, Missouri but we went to Saint Louis
to see it while we were out there visiting. Not much to do or
see. The area near WUSTL is definitely the nicest part of town.
The Saint Louis Art Museum is pretty good and worth a visit if
you like art. I never went, but my mom said the Budweiser tour
was surprisingly good. (And she doesn't even drink beer.)
was surprisingly good. (And she doesn't even drink beer.) If

7/28 I have a few relatives who are always on me to do/go see "this, that
and the other thing" every time i'm on vacation. I finally figured
out this was because they can't ever take vacations, and never have
the time to do the things on that list themselves, and most likely
want to live vicariously through me. Issue being is that I really
don't want to spend my time off rushing about like a madman(1) and
just to fulfill someone else's checklist(2). What's a nice iconic
statement to tell them to fuck off? (Preferably short, sweet,
repeatable, --i plan to get a bumpter sticker with this, or a tshirt).

6/25 Does anyone actually have a direct proof as to why the Irrational
Numbers are countable, (one that doesn't start with "assume they
are countable.." Thx.
\_ No, it's not possible. "Uncountable" means "can't be put into
one-to-one correspondence with the natural numbers"; the only way
to prove an impossibility like that is to assume the opposite and
derive a contradiction. Mathematicians who reject the idea of
proof by contradiction also reject the idea of uncountable sets.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructivism_(mathematics
\_ Interesting- i are these folk discredited? I ask because there
are an awful lot of proofs (including the halting problem,
not the version that is directly from cantor's diagonal tho)
that always start out with "assume this is true..."
\_ I really don't think you'll find a proof that irrational
numbers are countable.

It takes an architecure firm to come up with this "brilliant, simple
solution"??? Geez, a high school kid familiar with the HOMFLY
polynolmial can come up with that. In fact a high school kid can come
up with a less elegant yet cheaper and simpler solution which also
allows higher-flow overall, where the lanes of only one direction is
elevated and curved with lower speed while the lanes of the other
direction stays level and straight with higher speed. (I have thought
of this "design" (if such a trivial thing can be called as such) many
times whenever I think of that border crossing, althought I admit I'm

5/3 BP shares. Buy? They are down 20% because of the spill, but is that
the market overreacting or will there be major long-term
adjustments to their business models that will curtail profits?
\_ I am buying GS, but not BP. BP's potential liability is
pretty amazingly huge.
\_ Agreed. Note that BP has been trying to pay ppl $5k to
forfeit right-to-sue; that's backlash waiting to
happen.
\_ What do you project will be their liability? Oil will be
back to $150/barrel eventually. I think it would take maybe
a $50 billion liability to make me worry. Do you think it
could get that high? Exxon paid out $3.5 billion for the
Exxon Valdez. BP can take a $50 billion hit one year and
still make a profit.
\_ I think oil will go through the roof too, so I own XOM,
CVX and USO, but not BP. BP's liability could easily top
$100B if they don't get this capped. Remember Valdez
$10000B if they don't get this capped. Remember Valdez
was in an almost unpopulated area.
\_ Though I guess there are limits on how much they can
be sued for. This is kind of an untested area of the law,
I bought TM when they were in the news and it has worked
out well so far for me, BP is probably not a bad bet
either. -PP |
