7/31 My parents have an important anniversary coming up. Is it usually
expected for kids to do anything for their parents anniversary?
I never did a thing for any previous one.
\_ Whether it's expected or not, if you appreciate what they did for
you and have the resources to do so, it's a wonderful gesture to
           help celebrate their anniversary.
\_ The above advice is excellent, and need not only apply to your
parents' anniversary. Which anniversary are they celebrating?
\_ Yeah that did put things in nice perspective... although I'm
just pretty bad with gifts etc. in general. It's hard enough
for me to shop for myself. I think it is their 40th.
\_ Is it this year? The 40th anniversary is Ruby; my bros.
and I pitched in to buy my parents a bottle of 1966 Port
from K&L (about $100 with shipping). Even if your parents
                    don't drink, it's a ruby-colored present of some value
with the year 1966 displayed prominently on it. --erikred
\- i've got to disagree ... if i gave this to my parents
they would think it was stupid ... worse even than
a kermit lynch gift certificate. a narrow gift like
when you know they will have some appreciation of it.
\_ No. An anniversary is for the couple only. You wouldn't want
to walk in on your parents humping, would you? -proud American
a kermit lynch gift certificate :-).
to say something constructive: 1. do you have siblings?
if so, seems clear you should coordinate. 2. i think
you also may want to decide whether to have an event
or give them an object. event = small party, dinner
with the extended family and friends etc. i suppose
different people are sentimental in different ways
and you're in the best position to know what your
folks would appreciate ... some parents would love
a subsidized weekend B&B trip to the wine country ...
others would rather spend and evening with their
kids who live around the country etc.
\_ Dude, don't break tradition. Do nothing. -proud American

7/8 What's the best way (as in least messy, least effort) to remove rust

a few things that I'm trying to recover to sell on eBay but I'd like

\_ Acid, the stronger, the quicker it works. Lemon juice will work if
you can let it sit for a day or two. If you want to seal the metal
there are products that will turn the rust into a black paint like

\_ Accounting is actually one of the safer professions, I

requires them to be on-site. I'm also not sure how many
American companies want to open their books to foreigners.
CPAs are also regulated by the State. I can imagine the legal
problems with trying to go after a foreign accounting firm
              engaged in, say, fraud.

5/11 Hi guys. Is JIRA all that? We have Bugzilla too, but JIRA looks nice,
and we can afford it. Thanks.
\_ It was the leading candidate in our attempt to replace Bugzilla,
but there were enough problems with it that we decided not to use
it. (The status of the replacement project is undetermined.) My
biggest complaint was that the search interface sucks, both in
terms of UI and power. I also didn't much care for the fact that
email preferences are per-project and not per-user, so I can't
adjust when I get email. The lack of Bugzilla's "watch user"
feature is a problem too; although some aspects of notification
schemas are better than user watching, they don't cover the same
set of features. I also just didn't like the UI -- every action
requires opening a new page, it's clunky, important information
isn't presented very well, and it keeps rather more state than
I would like (so clicking on one link, clicking a second link,
and clicking the first link again doesn't bring me back to the
same page). It seems like it's not well built for the way we work.
There are features we like, just not enough to overcome the things
           we didn't like. -gm
\_ We switched to JIRA. All the things that gm doesn't like, except
for the back page stuff, you can control by setting up custom
work flows. This takes time though. -ausman

5/10 A flashlight I've owned for over 20 years finally burned out its
bulb which gives me an excuse to buy a new LED flash light. Anyone
        have recommendations?
\_ The Gerber Inifinity is pretty cool.
        \_ preferred form factor?
\_ the Inova ones are pretty sweet and sturdy: http://www.inovalight.com
           \_ I second that. I have three Surefire (P6, M2 with LED
conversion, and G2). Every single one of them had
assembly flaw. Chinese workers getting paid pennies an
hour would have assembled them better, but no, it's made
in the U.S. It's WAY overpriced, too. Also, if you use
it a lot, you'll want rechargeable. There are CR123A-sized
rechargeable Li-Ion (slightly higher voltage, about half the
capacity of non-rechargeable type), but I've never tried it.
I also have Inova light and it's much cheaper and just as
good, if not better. Well, Surefire does use high quality
              materials.
\_ If it's a quality flashlight (e.g. Mag) you can buy another bulb.
           \_ maglights are shit.
