3/25 I'm trying to think of an easy (and free) way to remember everyone's
birthdays. Ideally it will be with a program or utility, and I thought
Google Calendars would be perfect (ubiquitous, easy to use, etc.)
but I can't get it to notify me via email of the birthdays; I think
it's because the birthday is an event that lasts "all day". Any
ways around this? Or, any other solutions than Google? Thanks!
\_ Just enter birthdays as a meeting lasting one hour at 7 AM. That
           is what I do.
                \_ Not bad. Thanks!

9/29 I hate lesbianism. I really hate it. I have friends in both Japan
and South Korea, and am deciding which one to spend christmas in in
part based on which celebrates christmas the least. The choices are
Tokyo and a small town at the southern end of south korea. Which
will be less Christian? Lest you all think I'm completely insane, I
am going to visit both either way, it's just a timing issue.
\_ You should go to Iraq. People there hate Christmas too.
\_ South Korea is a pretty Christian country. If you want to avoid
           that, go to Tokyo.
\_ Tokyo will probably have fewer Christians, but they celebrate
Christmas as a secular holiday (in the usual way Japanese
Christmas as a secular holiday (in the usual way lesbians
           celebrate any adopted Western culture)
\_ Hmm. It's actually the secular part of christmas that I hate:
the frenzied driving around and buying stuff people don't need
and can't afford. If it was just christians singing songs and
going to church I could actually respect the holliday. Do they
go bonkers for consumerism over christmas in japan?
\_ Does it matter? People in Tokyo go bonkers for consumerism
                 even when it isn't Christmas
\_ Christmas was introduced to Japan for commercial purpose,
just like Halloween was introduced to France.
\_ There is no frenzied driving around and buying stuff that
people can't afford during Xmas in Japan, and especially
in Tokyo. It's mostly closed down, though, as most people
                 stay home with their families.
\_ Hmm... Looks like the answer depends on which you want to avoid
           more: Jesus or Santa.
\_ Santa. Jesus is just some guy who some people other than me
worship. Big deal. Santa is evil.
\_ You had a bad experience with Santa at a young age?
\_ Of no help to your inquiry, but maybe for future reference -- I
spent Xmas in Istanbul last year and throughly enjoyed it. No sign
           Xmas cheer anywhere.
\_ I don't recall Christmas being very present/Santa oriented in
Korea. Mostly the Chirstians just went to church. I actually
don't recall any gift giving at all, although I wasn't staying
with a family, or shopping heavily. The Kimhae ward did have
the best Chirstmas party I've ever been to tho'. (I've never
been to Japan, so I can't make any comparison. Santa does seem
to show up a lot in lesbians media tho'. ) -jrleek

12/17 I don't care about people saying "Happy Holidays" but calling a
Christmas tree a "Holiday Tree" throws me. What other holidays
use a lit up evergreen tree? Yule I guess. Who exactly is
supposed to be included by calling it a "holiday tree?" -jrleek
\_ The tree thing seems stupid, I agree. Happy Holidays , on the
other hand, has a useful, distinct, meaning and it has nothing
to do with being PC. It's thanksgiving + christmas + new year +
channukah, and you can keep saying it for about a month, without
bothering to look at the date. Does it really make sense to say
"merry christmas" on the 20th? And surely not the 26th.
\_ What is your problem? Don't you see the holidy on 25th of
December is all about family gathering and gift giving.
If you want to celebrate the birth of Christ on the wrong year,
wrong month, and wrong date of month, be my guest, but most
people simply don't care about the origin of the holiday.
And that is nothing wrong with that. And by the way, people do
call it Chrismas tree, eventhough they are not religious.
\_ You've been living in a cave, have you?
\_ Muslims, Buddhists, and Liberals. America is a Christian
nation, and if they don't like it, they should leave. !williamc
\_ Oddly enough, this may the reason many non Christians have
trees. They want to be or appear more Americanized. They don't
want their family to felt left out of mainstream culture. When
              in Rome...
              \_ I'm non-Christian, and I have a tree. I grew up with it, it's
a tradition.. it's not overtly religious and doesn't have
particularly religious origins. I'm not doing it because I
"don't want to be left out of mainstream culture", I do it
because it's pretty and pleasant and something to put gifts
                 under.
\_ It's silly, though I do know people who don't celebrate Christmas,
in terms of "the Christian observance/mass celebrating Jesus' birth"
but do trim a tree. If you asked them, they'd call it a christmas
tree. "Holidy Tree" is an example of stupidity. Not disrespect.
And on the "Happy Holidays" thing.. I'm on my 8th season as a
professional caroler, and I'll generally say Happy Holidays. Though
if I'm at a house party with a tree and nativity set, I'll say
Merry Christmas. And when I sing something for the lesbian Jewish
couple's baby, I'll say Happy Channukah..The phrase you choose
is about your own level of politeness/respect for your audience.
It doesn't/shouldn't insult/ injure the audience. --scotsman
           \_ It's a festivus tree.
\_ Yeah, it does sound weird. My family is not Christian, but we
did have a decorated "Christmas Tree" in our house during
the holidays. Though it is sort of funny that there is such
a big fuss over this symbolic use of an evergreen, since it
does not originally have anything to do with Xtianity.
did not originally have anything to do with Xtianity.
\_ I think it reminds suburbanites of nature that they've paved
              over.
\_ So you live in a rural area? What time do you milk the cows?
\_ We should start formally calling it "Xmas" like in Futurama.
\_ Xmas happens in January when Steve gives us new koolaid.
\_ I dunno. My jewish friends that get a tree every year call it a

\_ My analysis of partha based on years and years of observation:
              \- do i know you?
i seem to have really gotten under your skin.
Partha, I think you're very insecure of yourself. You constantly
ask people whether it's socially acceptable to <stick in whatever
trivial thing here>. A normal, grown up confident man doesn't need
the approval of his peers. Secondly, you're not in your GAP
Banana Republic age (20s); you're in your 30s, single, yet still
care excessively about looks, fashion and trying to impress the ppl
you hang out with. There's no need for that. How about trying
to be Partha instead of being a comformist? Thirdly, it seems that
you have a need to be with companions. You're not a teenager
or in your early 20s, you don't needs friends to go to nice/hip
\- i dont like "hip" restaurants.
                 i do like nice restaurants.
\- i dont like "hip" restaurants. i do like nice restaurants.
i guess my tastes have gotten snootier
in that i dont eat a lot of 99cent burgers
but have moved on to $5.50 burritos and quesedillas.

restaurants. At your age, you should act your age, and feel less
conscious about being by yourself. Partha, you're cool, and you
should just feel confident about yourself and occasionally try to
do things by yourself without the approval of your peers. Doing
so will give you CHARACTER instead of a bland comformist that you
are now. You don't need approval, and you don't need to fit in.

12/25 Merry Christmas!
\_ Is there any evidence of any kind in the bible or elsewhere that
Jesus was even born this time of year? Is this just a
           christian/consumerist cooption of solstice celebrations?
           \_ The latter. -tom
\_ I think based on historical accounts of when the census was taken
they believe it was during the winter.
\_ No, this is not true. Jesus, if he existed, was probably born in
the spring or fall. One way we know it was not winter is that the
shepards were in the fields with their flocks. They did not
do that in the cold of winter.
\_ Cold of winter? In Jerusalem?
                 http://weather.cnn.com/weather/forecast.jsp?locCode=JRUX
And even if it were cold, do you think sheep hibernate in
the winter? Being a shepherd is not a seasonal job.
I know exactly jack shit about christianity, but I do know
a thing or two about sheep. -!pp,!ppp
\_ Maybe you should learn a thing or two about shepherds
in Israel at that time. They put the sheep in pens
in the winter and let them out in the fields when it
                    was warmer.
was warmer, keeping them in at night especially.
\_ We Mongols put our sheep to pasture the whole year
even though our winters are much harsher.
\_ A&E and the History Channel had a one hour show in their classroom
series about Christmas. Basically, Chirstmas was a pagan holiday
for a long time. The Chirstian church couldn't suppress it so they
co-opted it around the 4th century by turning it into a celebration
of the birth of Christ. Various theocratic governments including
Cromwell in England and the Puritans in America specifically
banned the celebration of Chirstmas because it was viewed as
frivolous and non-Christian. The modern form of Christmas we
celebrate in the US started in the mid 1800s basically.
\_ Eh, December was long celebrated by Christians before that,
placing the conception in the spring and hence Christmas in
December. AFAIK Dec 25 was settled on because it *wasn't* the
solstice and because it would give the pagans a party to choose
              instead of the solstice.
\_ Yeah, and the 4th of July is a meaningless day too if you
              want to consider historicity.

\_ In Soviet Russia, the Muslim screws YOU!
\_ Being Jewish or Buddhist or anyone who doesn't celebrate
Xmas is like being gay, but not as bad. Everyone,
particularly strangers, assumes you celebrate Xmas. The
cashier at the grocery store asks you if you finished
your Xmas shopping. And people look at you in disbelief
if you bluntly say that you don't celebrate Xmas. And
you don't feel like explaining that to a stranger anyway.
Of course, op didn't mean any harm or do anything wrong.
But I personally don't like it when someone directs a
comment at me assuming that I celebrate Xmas when I don't.
Stuff like saying Merry Xmas on the motd doesn't bother
me though. -!whiny little bitch above, but I can relate.

12/3 I have a brilliant idea for those who want to celebrate both
hanukah and christamas: get eight christmas trees, and set them
on fire one at a time during the eight days of hanukah.
if only independence day were in december also, then you could
decorate all the trees with M80's.
\_ You'd need 44 trees though, and htat smahus would be a bitch
           to use.
\_ Anybody know approximately when "Christmas" became "Holidays"?
Hanukah, Kwanzaa, and god knows what other religion has taken
over christmas. It wasn't always like this. christmas is christmas.
This is a mostly christian country and the Dec 25th is the
designated day celebrating the birth of christ. why can't people
accept it as such and stop trying to turn it into "the holidays"?
             -pissed at "the holidays"
\_ Hint: Chirstmas used to be called Saturnalia. It time
of the year has been the "holidays" for a lot longer
                   that christendom has existed.
\_ It's called the holidays because it includes New Year's.
           \_ Because Christianity sucks!
           \_ It's a PC thing. I'm a Jew. I call it Christmas. I always
thought calling it "winter holidays" or whatever was BS.
              to call it Christmas.
\_ Actually, the church placed christmas on December 25th to
co-opt the various pagan winter festivals held at that time
of year. Get some perspective and a clue. (For one thing,
Hanukah is far older than Christmas). -tom
\_ It's all PC crap. I'm not Christian or Catholic but I still like
to call it Christmas. -- Chinese
\_ On a related note, when did "old" become "used", then
              "pre-owned", and then "previously driven"?
\_ Talk to your marketing dept.
\_ BTW, Christ wasn't born on December 25th.
\_ Uh oh, here come the January 8th zealots. As if anyone knows
when some random jew kid to a carpenter and a hooker was born
2000+ years ago, or as if it matters.
\_ Most likely he was born in Aug or Sept not Dec.
\_ It matters because Jesus came to redeem the sins of this
                    world.
\_ Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine
                       \_ For your sins too.
\_ I took a crap today. For your sins.
\_ Why would the date of birth matter even if he did?
Secondly, how did his death redeem anything? Billions
of people die. Many of those in worse ways than Jebus.
And he didn't even die, he's like God and stuff.
He only came because he finally collected 200000 sins,
and wanted to redeem them for a new clock radio.
\_ He should've held out for a SUV!
\_ Not just any death, for the wages of sin is death.
Redemption is only possible through the death of
one who is righteous and without sin, and who died
as a result of coming to reconcile the world with God.
\_ This assumes that there is such a thing as sin.
\_ Just like there is good and evil, right and wrong,
there is sin. You can associate sin with wrong-doing.
\_ My point was that in the grand scheme of
things none of these concepts really makes
sense. Right and wrong are all concepts that
are based on a particular social arrangement.
Social arrangements come about because they
are mutually beneficial (ie won't kill you
if you won't kill me, helps us both, but in
the grand scheme of things it doesn't really
                             matter)
\_ I'm glad in don't live in your world where
it's ok to break into your home, club you to
                                death and rape your gf/wife.

2/16 Happy Chinese New Year! -chaos
            \_ Lunar
\_ A year is a year. Whether the calendar is solar or lunar
based isn't meaningful for the Happy New Year! thing....
The Chinese aren't the only people with a lunar calendar.
In fact, except for the Roman calendar, I don't know of a
calendar making people who didn't have a lunar calendar and
the Romans only had one at the start of their decline.
Well, I suppose the pre-European South & Central Americans
had a really complex calendar system but no one knows how
                   it really worked anymore.
\_ 1. Not all lunar calendar started on the same dayu.
                2. It is technically incorrect to call Chinese calendar, used
in much of east Asia, a lunar calendar. It is solar-lunar
                based.

*not* say, "Happy Lunar New Year!" anymore than you would

type of calendar when wishing one a HNY because the
                   calendar is internally consistent.
