3/14 Some new report say that the damage to ports in Santa Cruz by the tsunami waves amount to $20M. It might be a lot of wood logs, but $20M sounds way too much. \_ so Santa Cruz wants a bailout. 9/4 Help! Tar spilled all over, what's the best way to clean up? \_ http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/utilityroom/stain%20removal%20tw.htm \_ http://www.wisegeek.com/how-do-i-remove-stains-from-clothing.htm http://www.ehow.com/tips_877.html \_ Turpentine. Careful, it'll strip paint too. -John \_ Can I buy this at Home Depot? I looked on their web site and they don't have it. However, they do have paint thinners. Are they the same? \_ Paint thinner is general a cheaper substitute for turpentine (which is organic -- turpentine is just the generic name of the substance.) I don't know what you're trying to do, but I'd ask to see if they have something that won't harm whatever you're trying to remove the tar from. If it's real tar, you just want something that is a solvent for mineral oil. -John \_ I took apart my door panel to fix the rattle and had to take out the plastic covering with sticky black tar and it got all over the upholstery and I can't get it out. I'm sure it's tar. I'll give paint thinner a try, thanks so much! \_ Might want to consider getting it cleaned. $$, but you'll have someone to yell at... -John \_ This might help: http://csua.org/u/gu1 |

2/6 I love wood work, I love building my own things. In HS I was the best student in wood shop. When I was in college I got a nice 18V Makita drill/screw driver set... best investment ever. Later in my life I bought a jig saw to speed up cutting, and I bought a nice variable speed Ryobi. Later on when I needed to cut straight edges precisely and quickly, I bought a circular saw. I also bought a nice Makita hand sander, which is heavily utilized. Now I'm at a point where I need a router but I'm not sure if it's actually worth the investment. The reason is that routers are actually quite expensive and I only need it occasionally to round off edges of wood pieces but beyond that it'll not be heavily utilized the way drills/sanders/saws are utilized. Any advice? Ideally I'd like to have an easy/any-time access to a wood shop, with a nice stationary drill, table saw, and other goodies. Either that, or I can start building one in my garage which will cost a lot, and take up too much space. So... router? or wood shop? \_ You can do a lot with a good router. See the show "the router workshop" where they make pretty much everything with just routers. \_ My advice is: stop saying "utilized" instead of "used". It doesn't make you sound smart. \_ And stop saying "investment" when you're buying the tools for your toys projects. \_ If you're in the south bay, there's one place that was mentioned in the sjmerc of a warehouse that some guy had converted into a walk-in woodshop. If you only need certain expensive things occasionally, it might be more cost efficient to go there. I think Home Depot also rents tools like these. \_ Both Berkeley and Oakland have tool lending libraries. -tom \_ In the long run, if you want to take the time to really learn how to use the router, it will be worth it. You probably won't use it as much as, say, your drills or circular saw, but it'll save you a lot of time when you do need to use it. Like having a drill press versus handhelds. In the short term, tool lending libraries. |

2/5 Has anyone resurfaced their furnitures using wood veneer? I'm trying to match the color of my old desk with my new book shelves and I'm wondering how easy it is to use those self adhesive wood veneers. I'm also wondering if it's flexible enough to go around the edges of the desk. At $80 for a sheet of 2'x8' veneer sheet, it's quite an investment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. \_ If you want it to look good, hire a professional. Also, you may be better off sanding and restaining depending on your situation. |

Almost certainly sheetrock. Don't hang a light fixture from sheet rock, find a stud. \_ God, the term is DRY WALL. "Sheetrock" is an irritating brand name made into a neologism, like "Xerox." \_ Hey, could you Xerox this for me? 1/13 I just bought an piece of unfinished wood furniture (night stand). It's plywood-like, and I'd like to finish it myself by having it painted flat black like the rest of my furniture. I haven't done this stuff in awhile, so what should I do to finish it properly? I know it'll involve sanding (multiple times?) and then painting it. Should I use a primer too? If anyone can give me details on any of these steps, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. \_ Sand it lightly just to set up the surface, then clean off any sawdust. You shouldn't need primer. You probably want 3 coats of paint, with a light sanding between each if you want to get pedantic about it. -tom \_ plywood has too many holes, use a primer then paint \_ The paint you're going to use should have instructions for different types of wood. You're ruining a good piece of wood. \_ What kind of wood should I use if I want a white melanine look? I'm looking for something as solid as red oaks. \_ particleboard \_ Not sure what they used (not particle board) on the new yankee workshop, but it was stable and doesn't sag like particle board and takes paint well. you should check with your local home depot type store. \_ whitewashed cinderblock doesn't sag either. \_ Maybe try a pine.
