It doesn't take courage to stop being dispicable after you've discovered that's being dispicable is a losing tactic. It doesn't take courage to stop being despicable after you've discovered that's being despicable is a losing tactic. \_ Life isn't always scripted you know. It is possible that McCain did not realize that palling around with Rove's team would lead to such a lynch mob mentality. I certainly was expecting an ugly campaign, but nothing like the near- riot levels of hysteria from the Right. Pulling the country back from that kind of political violence speaks well of McCain's character. \_ So you are saying it's not poor John McCain's fault run of the sleaziest, deceitful campaigns ever? Gee, I guess he really is senile then, because that's the only reason I could see you giving him a pass for how he ran his campaign. \_ You are almost as dumb as George W. Bush. It is rare that anyone does something like this, in my experience, and especially rare for the fragile egomaniacs that end up in politics. 10/11 Hilarious Acorn slimey lawyer. What a dirtbag. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goTICiFQoeE \_ Josh Marshall has the clearest explanation for all this, but I'm sure it won't penetrate your tinfoil hat: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/223436.php \_ What it comes down to is the whole Acorn story is another dangerous mistruth being spread by the McCain campaign. McCain has proven over and over again he has no problem with telling massive lies if he thinks it will help him. \_ The gist is that Acorn pays unemployed and sometimes even homeless people to collect signatures. This is a dubious tactic, because the collectors have a huge incentive to produce fake registration documents in return for cold cash. This is is why the Democratic party doesn't associate with Acorn. However, it's not a sign of a nefarious plot of any kind, and in fact there has never been a documented instance of anyone trying to *use* these fake registrations. If you register as a member of the Dallas Cowboys or Mickey Mouse, you're not going to be able to vote. Vote fraud occurs only if you *try* to make an illegal *vote*. Acorn in fact reported a lot of the fake registrations *themselves*. The fact is that the right is trying to make a huge deal out of this because they know they're going to lose and they want to deligitamize the results. A coordinated vote fraud effort of the sort suggested by the right is a tinfoil hat fantasy that would be next to impossible to pull off, and years of investigations by Bush justice department officials have never turned up anything. \_ We need to find a way to turn right wing nutjob paniced desperation into energy. It could get us off foreign oil in days. How do you fall for this premptive THEY STOLE THE ELECTION bullshit? Are you that stupid? Here's a hint. Every voter registration drive gets bullshit registrations. That's why they are looked over by the state. Acron does flag some as pretty obvious fakes but STILL HAVE TO SUBMIT THEM. You are not allowed to collect voter registrations and then throw some of them out. Otherwise you would have sleazy registration drives where people who "register" people and then decide "hey all these registrations for the party I don't like, I think they are 'invalid'". (Although that's more of a Republican tactic, consdidering the Republican party seems to think legal disenfrancisment of legitimate minorty voters an acceptable tactic.) \_ What made me laugh about this guy is how he'd complain about anyone interrupting, but constantly interrupted Fund. And whenever he was factually called on issues (by the Dem official in NV for instance) he's just spin and divert. Slimey lawyer. Acorn is in trouble, seeing as it's being investigated in 12 states, and this guy isn't helping. -op \_ Investigated by an administration that has turned the justice department into a political tool. Investigated by an adminstration the illegally fired federal prosecutors who told them they weren't going to proscecute bogus voter fraud cases. Investigated by an adminstration whose party has tried time and time to illegally disenfrancise minority voters purely because they tend to vote for the other party. People who worry about a vast brown person voter fraud army are one step below Ron Paul supporters. Then again, you do watch Fox and Friends and think it is legit news. \_ Actually, no I don't. But nice conspiracy theory there, speaking of tinfoil hats. -op \_ Then why did you post a Fox and Friends clip as if was legit? \_ Uh, the conversation took place, no? \_ When did you stop beating your wife? |

Can you say Moral Hazard? \_ Moral Hazard. \- mccains mortgage repo idea is from martin feldstein ... who may or may not be an evil fucker -- i am not sure --- but he certainly knows more about economics than you do, so trivial complaints like "moral hazard, moral hazard!" are silly, espcially when you dont know the full extent of the plan, which has to do with piggy- back/bridge loans which are not non-recourse loans. --psb \_ ok smart guy tell me why McCain's plan is not full of holes. though at the end of the day, we're both voting for Obama \- if you are interested in *martin feldstein* and glenn hubbard's [?] plan, use google. in case you are interested, MF is "clearly" in the first rank of economists. as for GH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u2qRXb4xCU \_ You know what, this plan is actually the smartest thing I have heard from McCain yet. Will you finally admit your ideology a Marxist and the most liberal member of the Senate wins the Presidency in a landslide? Will you finally realize your ideology is destined for the junk bin of history? \_ Funny words from a guy who has to keep pulling his ideology out of the dustbin. \_ That was non-responsive, but I can answer the question for you, if you like, because I have spent the time and effort to figure out what makes Conservatives tick. \_ How old were you when Ayers co-authored an Annenberg grant that netted nearly $50m over five years for the ailing Chicago school system? How old were you when he became a Distinguished Prof at UI Chicago? \_ So murder is okay in your eyes if you get some grant money? \_ Murder is always OK so long as you're one of the wealthy elite. OJ Simpson and the Bush Administration are proof. \_ No one was killed or even hurt by Ayers. \_ So attempted murder is okay? \_ Tell that to Diana Oughton \_ "Oughton died in an explosion on March 6, 1970, in the Greenwich Village townhouse explosion in New York City, when a bomb she was constructing with Terry Robbins accidentally detonated, destroying the building and killing her, Robbins, and Ted Gold." Waiting for explanation of Ayers' guilt here. \- Nice of Hillary Clinton [the extreme liar] to lay the groundwork for MCCAIN INC on this one ... rewatch the PA Debate [sic] ... "Barak, people died". \_ The $50M went to typical radical causes. And even CNN has called Obama a liar on this. There's a recommendation! \_ Dude, he raised the money; if it was squandered, look to the Administrators. \_ You mean Obama? \_ You mean you think Obama was the Superintendent of the Chicago Unified School District? \_ No, he was the chairman of the Chicago Anneberg challenge. He decided when the money went. Sorry, we've been over this before, and I don't have time right now. Go look up where Obama spent the $100 million. It's very interesting. \_ Yeah it is interesting and it looks like it was a good experiment. How many billions get wasted every week on Bush's little "experiment" in Iraq? I would rather spend the money here, trying to improve Chicago schools, but this is an area where we obviously differ. \_ Nice red herring. In any case, those who are stupid in small things, are also stupid in large things. \_ You mean like the Bush/McCain/Palin ticket? \_ No, like you apparently. Sheesh. Bush/ McCain/Palin ticket. 10/5 Guess which VP candidate has read the Constitution? PALIN: Of course, we know what a vice president does. And that’s not only to preside over the Senate and will take that position very seriously also. I’m thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president if that vice president so chose to exert it in working with the Senate and making sure that we are supportive of the president’s policies and making sure too that our president understands what our strengths are. BIDEN: The only authority the vice president has from the legislative standpoint is the vote, only when there is a tie vote. He has no authority relative to the Congress. \_ He said "He". SEXIST. \_ Of couse he won't say "she" at this point of the campaign. Just like he'd say he already knows that the next president will be black, even though deep in his mind he's not sure. \_ But Palin has read the Russian Constitution! \_ She can see it from her house! \_ Palin is not entirely wrong. A Republican VP is more powerful than a plain VP. Just look at how powerful Chaney is (seriously). a plain VP. Just look at how powerful Cheney is (seriously). \_ Research Cheney and the VP position. Constitutionally, VP has no more power/responsibility than Biden says. Cheney has _created_ new power for the VP position because "the goddamn constitution is just a piece of paper." |

10/5 We witness here a great political lesson. When you are president, it matters -- it really matters -- that a majority of the people support and respect you. When you squander that affection, you lose more than mere popularity. You lose the ability to lead when your country is in crisis. This is a terrible loss, and a dangerous one, for the whole world is watching. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122300786229301597.html \_ Which is why I think McCain is a better pick than Obama. McCain has friends that are Congressional Democracts while Obama has made enemies out of at least one. 10/4 You know what I hate more than a politician focused on truthiness? A politician like Biden who just flat out lies. http://tinyurl.com/474d2r \_ dude, new york post, seriously? \_ Dude, New York Post, seriously? \_ Oh, I'm sorry that you're such a sorry sack that you ignore lies because you don't like the source. I know you are desperate to make people forgot what a mendacious campaign McCain is running, but this is weak at best. His lie that Obama never said he'd meet with the president of Iran without preconditions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1dSPrb5w_k \_ What is the 'with preconditions' crap? I don't get it. It's not a very good sounding soundbite. Presidents meet with whoever the hell they want. Full transcript of the debate: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/02/debate.transcript \_ I know at least some of those New York Post "facts" are disingenuous at best. For instance the leading general in Afghanistan specifally said that, while he needs more troops in Afghanistan a surge like in Iraq would not be effective because the two contries different (ignoring the question did the surge really work considering the higher troop levels were still there and the whole point of the surge was supposed to be a short term tactical surge that would alleviate the need for a long term force buildup.) Meanwhile Palin claims troop levels in Iraq are lower than pre surge which is a flat out lie and when called on it she insists that it is true. What the hell is that? \_ You know what I hate more than calling the NYPost a newspaper? When supposed newspapers rely on paraphrases rather than quotes, and then attack those paraphrases with opinion and further paraphrases of poorly named sources rather than facts and quotes. How hard would it be to line up a Biden quote with a source showing an actual lie? \_ They lost me at "For all the focus on Srah Palin's graceful performance..." \_ What is the Dittohead desperation level now? I guess it was too much to expect you guys to lose gracefully. \_ Can you take a video of your head exploding after America elects the most liberal member of the Senate and a renowned Marxist, to the most liberal member of the Senate and a reknowned Marxist, to the highest office in the land? \_ Marxist doesn't mean what you think it means. \_ http://csua.com/Politics/Domestic/President/Reagan/?page=1#50284 I don't really think he is the most liberal member of the Senate either. -pp \_ Why aren't you concerned about Palin's lies? http://tinyurl.com/4fpela \_ I didn't say I wasn't. -op |

My people over complicates and over-interprets everything as if most people actually care about issues. It's never 100% issues!!! Combine it with the way you look. The confidence you have. The way you talk and relate to average blue collar workers. I mean just observe Reagan who can relate well to everyone. If my people want to appeal to the other 1/2 of the brain, they need to start picking candidates who are smart enough to look good and use carefully chosen dumbed down languages. My people are excellent at numbers and issues and if they can emulate the other 1/2 with good looks and carefully chosen, dumbed down languages, we'd have a recipe for success. Unfortunately, the Barak Obama campaign architect isn't getting it, using the same 'ol ineffective methods as John Kerry that only appeal to New Englanders and latte sipping yuppies. \_ I see you didn't watch the clip. \_ How is Obama up by five in the polls then? \_ Five is hardly statistical victory. Besides Dems have had a history of better poll results but worst actual outcomes. Dems are young and love to participate in polls but don't vote because they have to work. Reps are older and hate to participate in polls but they actually have more time to vote. \_ Oh, it is going down to the wire again, no doubt about that. I think the superior Obama ground game will give them the election this time, but it still could go either way. \_ How is it "superior"? It's superior in the eyes of D's and a total farce in the eyes of R's. \_ There are something like 10X as many Democratic volunteers than Republican volunteers this time around. Even right wing sites like newsmax are noticing: http://preview.tinyurl.com/4qw9cu You'll see. \_ Oh man, I hope you're right, because I've lost all hopes after 2000 and 2008 seeing how lame our candidates have been and how blind voters were. I hope you're right. -pp, Dem \_ http://donate.barackobama.com I already gave $4600, so I am tapped out, but I am going to Las Vegas to campaign for the week before the election. \_ Wow I donated $50. You're probably 100x richer than 90% of the Dem voters and only 1/10000 as wealthy as elite R voters \_ Hahaha. How many hours of work does that 4600 represent? Where do you think it went? Actually I find this sad. There are a lot of charity type things you could have spent that on. \_ How much did you give to charity this year? I think getting the crooks out of the White House is the best gift I could give my community. community. It was more than a week's pay but less than two week's. \_ and if he wins you're gonna pay more! LOL \_ So in other words, you don't give any money to charity and only look out for yourself. But you have to problem giving the rest no problem giving the rest of us "advice" on how to spend our money and time. I think America has had enough of that kind of selfish cynicism, no thanks. \_ Hello liberal! Wanna hold hands and sing kumbaya & smoke weed? \_ Hello, GOP stooge! 9/18 Obama's lies. How can you trust anything Obama says? http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/from-the-fact-1.html \_ Sorry, this isn't even the same as the crap McCain/Palin are pulling. It is an ugly attack ad. And ugly attack ads are sad. But it isn't anywhere nearly as mendacious as McCain has been. Oh and I'm sorry, the Republican party can't try to run away from the fact that it's media presence is extremely xenophobic and anti-Mexican. Nor does it help that McCain reverses himself on these issues regularly. \_ Sorry, but you'll have to try harder to justify this one. Do you really think this is the sort of thing we need in the White House? Misleading distortions and pandering to the fears of immigrants but representing himself completely differently depending on what group of people he addresses? \_ So you don't think the Republican party has been aggessivly anti-Mexican when it helps their cause? Really? From that same blog post: "McCain has changed his rhetoric and his emphasis when discussing immigration after almost losing the GOP presidential nomination because of it." A nice way of saying that McCain will say anything that sounds good. \_ Do you think McCain has been? He's been the most aggressive supporter of amnesty in the Senate. \_ And yet he is now pandering to the Republican base because his old views aren't popular. That's what "changed his rhetoric" means. Just like the old McCain was anti religious fundementalism but the new McCain is happy to jump into bed with creeps like Hagee. Pandering to the base does make you responsible for what that base says. \_ McCain has said since the public outcry that we have to secure the border before immigration reform can be readdressed. How is this pandering to "the base"? 80% of the country agrees with this. \_ Where did you pull that number from? |

9/18 I'd like to quote out of context from last night's Palin/Hannity interview: "I think that’s significant, but even more significant is the role that the lobbyists play in an issue like this also. And in that cronyism  it’s symptomatic of the grade of problem that we see right now in Washington and that is just that acceptance of the status quo, the politics as usual, the cronyism that has been allowed to be accepted and then it leads us to a position like we are today with so much collapse on Wall Street." NO CONTENT AT ALL. I have not read any economist or Treasury figure blame 'cronyism' or 'politics as usual' for our economic meltdown. 9/16 Hey look at that, more blatant lies from team McCain. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/16/AR2008091603406.html How can you trust anything McCain says? \_ 1) It's blatant, btw 2) The article says that in 2005, AK accounted for 18 percent of domestic production in 2005. \_ The article says 7.4 percent or 13 percent depending on if you want to give Palin credit for forgetting that "oil and gas" includes natural gas. And if you the percentage declines from 18 to 13 percent WHILE YOU ARE IN CHARGE you should know that. Not to mention that the first time she made up these numbers she was claiming 20 percent of ALL DOMESTIC ENERGY when the actual number was 3.5%. Good thing she "knows more about energy than probably anyone." \_ My point is that calling this a "blatent [sic] lie" is a bit much. Yes it's an exaggeration, and should be corrected. But "how can you trust anything" is ridiculous. The fact that WaPo is essentially part of the Obama campaign should add further skepticism. \_ McCain's campaign cavalier attitude with the truth is McCain's fault, not Obama's. Frankly the last 8 years of being governed by an administration that thinks they can make their own reality was enough for me. \_ Oh you poor poor Republicans, with the media plotting against you and all. 9/16 (Brought up with update) Interesting old NYTimes article. It seems Bush tried to overhaul Fannie and Freddie regulation 5 years ago, but was blocked by Dems. http://csua.org/u/mdc \_ Thanks, this renewed my faith in McCain \_ How was it blocked by Dems if the GOP had a majority of both houses of Congress? \_ Newer NYTimes article. The house DID pass a reform bill 3 years ago (with bipartisan support) but it died in the Senate after Greenspan and the Bush administration opposed it, according to the former Republican congressman who had pushed for it. http://csua.org/u/mdd \_ McCain apparently sponsored the this Bill in the Senate, but it never made it out of committee. http://csua.org/u/me8 \_ Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) said: "I'm always for less regulation" and referred to himself as "fundamentally, a deregulator." \_ So what? So am I, but Freddie and Fannie were a terrible implementation of priviatization and deregulation. What kind of idiot says to businessmen "Ok, I'll take all the risk, and you can have all the profits. We'll have congress watch you." That's just flat out retarded. \_ So far, I have never seen a politician come out and say "I am in favor of bad government" but it is amazing to watch the GOP go from "government is bad" to "nationalize everything" in two weeks. \_ As a free market person I am disappointed in the actions of the GOP. I don't much care for the GOP, but WTF are they thinking? My take: 1) Preserve stock equity for their cronies 2) Pander to the public ahead of the election No honest Republican or fiscal conservative wants any part of this crap plan they are wasting taxpayer money on. In fact, who *does* want it other than Wall Street? Why should the gov't bail out Wall Street? The gov't is broke. Wall Street has been raking in massive profits. The US banking system will be just fine. Reprice the debt, declare a loss, and move on. Good ideas will still find capital. There's a lot of money flowing in the markets around the world. \_ The entire world is a free market. If the US government is incompetent, good people with good ideas will simply move their ideas to countries where it is profitable for them. If the US government is unfit to compete, then it deserves to die. -free market person \_ The problem is that so much of our economy is based on nothing -- just moving numbers around computer systems. This statement does not require that kindergarteners be taught sex ed, and I highly doubt that was Obama's intent. Requiring that little kids be told that "you can get bad diseases from adults touching you inappropriately" seems a much more credible interpretation. This was a total nothing, and if it didn't make for an interesting horserace story the press would have ignored it like it should have been. Stop pretending there's any story here beyond McCain trying to outdo Bush in sleazy campaigning. \_ I already confront Obama supporters with that question. I think Palin may be a nice enough person but she's not ready to be president. Her interview from last night demonstrates this. She has no clue. The last couple of McCain bits where he infers that Obama was teaching sex ed to kindergartners make me a little sad. \_ I have yet to see any evidence that Obama has even the tiniest of clues. Everything he says is pre-scripted to the audience he is talking to. Which makes him the equivelent of a modivational speaker. \_ Yes but I love moDivational speakers, and so do a bunch of people. "Most Democrats don't understand that politics is more like religion than it is like shopping." \_ BRAWNDO! IT'S WHAT PLANTS NEED! \_ http://yourmorals.org I thought I was a liberal but it turns out that I'm a moderate. On the 5 foundations (harm, fairness, loyalty, authority, purity), I am consistently in between. \_ This is an interesting test. I line up very strongly with liberals on fairness, purity and authority scores, but I have high loyalty and less concern for harm (like a conservative). I always have prefered the moniker "armed liberal" to describe myself, though, so this fits. \_ "Whether or not someone violated standards of purity and decency." How the hell do you answer a question like that without knowing what the standards of purity and decency are? \_ How *do* you answer it? Don't you think there is a standard? If not, you are probably a liberal. \_ Right, because only conservatives are decent. \_ A conservative certainly wouldn't have to ask what the standards of purity and decency are, would they? \_ Yep, they'd believe in the wrong answer already. c.f. torture. \_ If this is somehow part of your definition of conservative v. liberal, your definition needs some serious re-evaluation. \_ No, it is you who needs to do some serious self- examination. Conservatives have a legitimate reason to bash liberals for "moral relativism" and the sooner you understand why, the more you will understand about the debate. And I am a liberal, by the way, but at least I have bothered to take the time to understand what Conservative positions are grounded in. \_ So there's no moral relativism to being gung-ho about torture? There's no moral relavtivism to to treating terrorists differently if they are white and christian? You are confusing recationary xenophobia with something else. \_ Are these serious questions or are you just being rhetorical here, it is hard to tell. I see nothing in The Bible that prohibits torture, in fact there are parts that seem to indicate it is permissible. Your claim that conservatism is xenophobic precisely misses the point. \_ What does The Bible have to do with it? Torture being ok for brown and/or poor people but not for good decent folks is a fine example of having relative morals. Or do you think the republican party is going to start putting people in "stress positions" until they start talking about insider trading? \_ Don't confuse "the republican party" with conservatism. I know more than one evangelical in my family would have no problem with giving the FNM execs a serious beating. And other Wall Street types. I don't think their point of view is unusual. \_ The new testament is pretty seriously against torture. Matthew 5, and 5:39 in particular, Matthew 25:31-46, John 9:7 to take a few obvious verses. -tom \_ http://preview.tinyurl.com/3kteeh \_ http://preview.tinyurl.com/3n63ux \_ Almost all of that is in the Old Testament. And the New Testament references don't imply that it's OK for people to torture other people. -tom \_ This asinine insistence that "conservatives" have some sort of monopoly on moral certitude has no basis in reality. Some liberals have similarly inflexible morals ("All corporations are evil." "Profits are immoral." "Israel's actions in the occupied territories are war crimes." "The military should be abolished.") "Moral relativism" is a bullshit charge leveled against people who don't share your particularly restrictive morality while deliberately ignoring whatever moral code they might actually have. (Cf. Rick Santorum's assertion that legalizing homosexual marriage will lead to legalization of bestiality and pederasty.) If the question is "whether or not someone violated" MY "standards of purity and decency," then yes, that would be particularly important to me. If the question is "whether or not someone violated" Fred Phelps' "standards of purity and decency," I really couldn't give a fuck. \_ I have all the right to sodomize you as long as I have the power to do so. Yes! \_ See now, if that had been the question, there would have been no ambiguity. \_ Let's see what is the dictionary defintion of the word "liberal": # Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. # Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded. It is not my fault that you have decided that the word "liberal" means something different than what it means to the rest of the English speaking population. The fact that "some (self-identified) liberals" do not fit the definition doesn't mean you get to twist it to suit your own personal agenda. Good luck on your newspeak efforts though. agenda. Good luck on your Newspeak efforts though. Do I really need to pull up the dictionary definition of conservative to make my point? \_ Nothing in those definitions implies moral relativism. It just implies having an open mind. Having strong ethics and morals does not mean someone is closeminded or a bigot. I don't think newspeak means what you think it does. \_ Yes, please. And while you're at it, discuss why the Right Wing Conspiracy continues to belittle people with fixed but opposing views as "liberal." *I* didn't decide on this definition or culture-war distinction; I prefer the word "progressive." |

9/10 McCain is morally unfit to be president http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09/mccains-integri.html \_ From the guy saying we should interview Palin's OB to find out if Trig is really her baby? \_ So you've got nothing to respond to his charges. \_ No, just that everything that comes out of Sullivan's face should be viewed with healthy skepticism. I'll look into it when I have time. \_ Translation: Sullivan is 100% right but I'm going to stick my fingers in my ears and say LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU. \_ Obama fan desperation level red! \_ Don't your ears hurt when you jam those fingers in so deep. \_ No, I hadn't read it. Now I have. Wow, what a loon. He says that McCain lacks integrity because: 1) He didn't endorse Kerry in 2004 2) He didn't vote to outlaw tortore "as bad and worse than the torture inflicted on him in Vietnam" (which is a joke) 3) "MTV-style attacks on Obama's virtues" 4) He "thre caution to the wind and with no vetting" picked Palin This is a joke. Seriously \_ Sullivan's a Republican who supported the war at first and then later concluded that it was a bad idea; he endorsed Kerry in 2004. McCain's failure to take a stand against torture is viewed by many sane people as a political capitulation. Your reading comprehension is suspect on the third point. Palin opposed everything that McCain has stood for until he adopted the part line. What, of any of the things above, does not point to a lack of integrity? Also, which of these is crazy? Your disagreement is not a valid psych diagnosis. \_ My third point is a direct quote. Sullivan may have been a conservative at some point, but he's gone wildly off the rails. \_ Your "direct quote" leaves out the charge of slime that relates directly to the charge of lack of integrity. \_ This is retarded. Most of his critisisms, aside from the torture one, are stronger against Obama than McCain. \_ Huh? Is up down? What the hell are you talking about? \_ He seems to think Obama also thinks "lipstick on a pig" is calling Palin a piggy pig. \_ No, McCain's being silly there, but Obama has also done similar things. So, it's a wash. \_ I see a stunning lack of examples. \_ The "equality" argument is such horeshit. This is like equating the entirety of the Iraq WMD travesty with a stupid comment of Michael Moore's. \_ You're right, Obama hinting that all of his opponents are racists was much worse. I shouldn't have tried to equate them. \_ You're right, Obama's repeated hinting that all of his opponents are racists was much worse. I shouldn't have tried to equate them. \_ Can you give ANY examples? Or are you just making shit up? \_ Obama keeps playing the race card, saying his opponents will say "his name is funny" or "he's black". The most recent example was in the last week or so. \_ So no, you can't. \_ Oh for heaven's sakes, are you living in a cave? Have you forgotten how to use google? Here's an old one. (Easiest to find.) http://csua.org/u/mbc \_ Fuck you whomever deleted my response to this. \_ But of course it is okay that McCain says that opponents of Palin are sexist. \_ I guess you've missed out on the rather unsubtly racist ads McCain is now running. \_ In the 2000 primary, Bush supporters push-polled that McCain had a secret black baby out of wed- lock; these people weren't racists, they were politically savvy-- and morally bankrupt. For Obama to say that he expects his opponents to make fun of his name and try to stir up fear by reminding people that he's black is not an accusation of racism; it's pulling a proven tactic out into the open before it gets used covertly. Getting back to the original point, there is no grand total score of Good/Evil for you to use to "balance" the two candidates on. Take each case as it comes and evaluate it given its importance to you. Various Voting Poll sites have worked this out, and so can you. \_ I do not understand why McCain is not world's biggest opponent of torture. |

However, considering how much mud has been thrown, I'm not going to accept it unless it's rock-solid. Also, the Alaskan Dems credited her with killing it, though they've since scrubbed their site of that. Here's the google cache: http://tinyurl.com/5cqdw9 \_ Once it became obvious that the Bridge was a national disgrace AND CONGRESS WASN'T WILLING TO FUND THE ENTIRE THING, Palin killed the project because she didn't want to spend state money on it, but happilly kept all the money the federal government had given her already for the project. Read that WSJ article, I'm pretty sure WSJ is ideologically pure enough for you. \_ "However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities." This hardly sounds like "killing it." Also, there is a charge that although they stopped the project, AK kept the money. \- also WSJ: ...today, Sen. McCain again asserted that Sen. Obama has requested nearly a billion in earmarks. In fact, the Illinois senator requested $311 million last year, according to the Associated Press, and none this year. In comparison, Gov. 9/9 Liberals keep talking about how Palin is loud, annoying, obnoxious. Liberals hate candidates with big egos & obnoxious personality. You know what? That's exactly what conservatives vote for. Palin is playing the Ronald Reagan card... fuck all issues and just look nice on TV and be bright and be seen. The Ronald Reagan card is wins 48% of the votes, and is exactly what will get candidates into office. Sorry liberals, you just don't get it. \_ What sort of troll are you? \_ Right. If the Dems "got it," they'd remind people that: --McCain divorced his first wife, a former swim-wear model, after she was horribly disfigured in a car accident. \_ Dude are you serious? URL? \_ actually this is true. while McCain was in POW camp, his wife was in a terrible car accident that required 25+ surgeries that left her 4 inches shorter. she didn't tell him this while he was in POW camp, figuring he was suffering enough. when he got back to the states, he divorced her, and soon married the rich Arizona heiress. \_ Who was young enough to be his daughter. \_ The Daily Mail is a horrible rag, and yet I think they managed to capture the outrage pretty accurately on this: http://preview.tinyurl.com/6gbzhw (Daily Mail) \_ According to the article, he got back to the US in 1973, and divorced her in 1980. So it's a pretty big stretch to say he divorced her because of the accident. -tom \_ Good point. It's more accurate to say that he was running around on her, chasing other women, and that he divorced her to marry a rich and pretty younger trophy wife. --McCain called his second wife a cunt. How dare they take the high road! \_ The cunt story is dumb. If you've ever been in a relationship you'll know that there are sometimes ugly fights. The divorce stuff does, however, say something about McCain. \_ Frankly, what the guy says in privacy (or at least in hushed tones) doesn't particularly matter to me. 9/9 I am a democrat but my prediction is Obama will lose. He's a better speech giver, but what exactly has he done? He can talk the talk but there's no proof that he has what it takes do to the job. He had a golden opportunity to pick Hillary as the VP to form the dream ticket. It would've shown to the outside world that he will unite force with competitors for the common good, and he can put aside criticisms in the past. The combined ticket will also benefit from advice and help from Bill Clinton, who bought us 8 great years before the current bush fuckup, and whom I and a lot of people highly respect. But no, his current pick shows his arrogance (who needs the Clintons), immaturity (pick a white dude with more experience but less well known), insecurity (Clintons will have different view from him so his job will be easier without the Clintons), and over estimating himself. He is a black person after all. While I have nothing against black people, wining the election as a black person will be quite a challenge in itself. He's not Collin Powell, he's just a young black dude with good speaking skill at a good opportunity, but has yet to prove himself. Will there be enough people that trust him? It was a very smart move for McCain to pick a female VP. You have a war hero with a woman VP to win those voters that supports woman in politics. Unfortunately this will be a much bigger percentage than the die hard Clinton supporters that will vote for Obama because they've got no choice. Personally I probably won't even vote. The only way Obama is going to win is if the country really got sick and tired of the Republican Party after 8 years and wants something different. If this is the only thing he's banking on then it's very risky. Let's just hope that the war trained McCain got more common senses than Bush does so it won't be that bad if McCain wins. \_ You know what? You might be right that O could lose. However, you're still an idiot. \_ I'm a decline-to-state who voted for Hilary in the primary and McCain in the 2000 primary. I've always (so far) voted Democrat in Presidential elections. I am not wild about Obama, but I don't think he will lose. I think the choice of Biden was a good one (Biden was my pick for President above Hilary, but dropped out before I voted). The Clintons are very polarizing, which is what I told my Democrat friends back when Hilary was running for the Senate. A lot of people love them, but a lot of people really hate them. I think their association hurt Al Gore and Bill didn't do Hilary any favors in this election. Obama was wise to avoid them. McCain isn't really loved by anyone, even Republicans, because he is a loose cannon and Palin's strength is in appealing to voters who weren't going to vote for Obama anyway. I guess it draws out Republicans who might have stayed home otherwise if that was an issue. I think a Biden/Obama ticket makes more sense than an Obama/Biden ticket. My main beef with Obama is that I still know almost nothing about him or his record. He's a very charismatic speaker which makes me nervous, because people like that can be convincing. That *can* be a plus, but I don't like that attribute when mixed with his status as a relative unknown. I like leaders with a track record. \_ That is basically the same thing The Economist said about him, that he needs to define himself better if he wants to win. \- the fact that sarah palin appeals to anyone is a deep condemnation of america. and why are you paraoid about barak's unknowns rather than palin's knowns and things mccain has said he would do [like further plutocratization]. between experience and somebody treating me with contempt ["alaska is on the border \- the fact that sarah palin appeals to anyone is a deep condemnation of america. and why are you paraoid about barak's unknowns rather than palin's knowns and things mccain has said he would do [like further plutocratization]. between experience and somebody treating me with contempt ["alaska is on the border with russia, thus ..."] and additionally there some some evidence obama is refelctive, unlike BUSHCO ... and may studies show often the incompetent are overly confident. \_ What does this say? 9/8 here's a chance for your ranting to be useful to someone: assume McCain wins the election. Then what happens in the next 4 years? The economy? Wars? What? \_ We invade Iran. US credibility continues to crater. Dollar weakens further, both in terms of domestic inflation and relative to other currencies. Dollar-denominated oil prices skyrocket, driving up prices for everything. McCain's solution is to drill off-shore and in ANWAR; public pressure forces it to happen, but it has no effect on the economic situation. -tom \_ Really, you think we are going to invade IRAN under McCain? You willing to bet even money on that if he wins? Cause I'm happy to take the other side of that bet. Also you think the Dollar is going to behave differently under Obama? Why?? \_ McCain loves American military action, and has already expressed interest in attacking Iran more than once. It seems a foolish thing to bet on. The dollar will tank if we don't improve our fiscal situation by reducing the military and raising taxes. McCain will do neither. -tom \_ I don't know, McCain opposed Bush's tax cuts. I'd say we have a better shot at fiscal solvency with McCain+Dem congress than Obama+Dem congress. \_ But he supports them now. \_ Anything said during a campaign has zero credebility. 9/4 http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/Conventions/story?id=5715542&page=3 Now even McCain is spouting the party line about how Palin knows foreign relations because Alaska is close to Russia. Wow, that's some serious straight talk going on. \_ And Alaska is closer to Canada than to the 48 state! \_ Kind of stupid but not totally without merit. I think governors in California, Arizona, and Texas have a better handle on international relations than governors in Kansas, Arkansas, and West Virginia for instance. \_ I didn't know there America was building a giant fence on the Russian/Alaska border. \_ If you can't provide content or entertainment on motd, don't post anything. Fucker. \_ Take your own advice. Fucker. |

9/4 Someone asked yesterday about the Obama/Ayers link. It took me a while to find a link I was happy with, this one is ok. This guy goes into excruciating detail about the Annenberg Challenge and CAC over a number of blog posts. The full Annenberg documents were only recently released, and this post predates the release. The documents are still being digested, so this is far from the final word. Anyway, it is pretty obvious that Obama and Ayers had a close working relationship for at least 6 years (the real relationship almost cetainly predates this), in which they funneled millions to Ayers' causes and students. It's also quite obvious that Obama has been highly disingenous about this relationship, and many of his statements about it have been blatant falsehoods. ("Our kids went to school together", etc) http://csua.org/u/m9b \_ Yes, Obama supports terrorism and wants to KILL WHITEY. \_ It looks like Obama has really been trying to improve the schools, which is great. I think I am going to give him another $2300. \_ Might want to look into what he was spending that money on first. The challenge itself was deemed an utter flop. $100mil down the hole. \_ Deemed an utter flop by who? This guy is not a reliable source. http://preview.tinyurl.com/554pov The Annenberg Challange is hardly the radical far-left proposal this guy makes it out to be. \_ Sorry, it was a flop _in Chicago_. That is, it had no effect on student performance in Chicago. Your link is an overall evaluation, so not really interesting for this discussion. Also, it was deemed a flop by the Consortium of Chicago School Research (CCSR) in 2003. \_ Yes, that is interesting. I will have to do some more research. But I think it is amusing that an effort to try and weaken the hold of the teacher's union is called a communist tactic by this guy. \_ I with you agree there. -op \_ I agree with you there. -op here are some new numbers (VM Size in MB reported by Task Manager): 2.0.0.16 3.0.1 - Startup, empty the cache. 13 23 - Go to http://www.yahoo.com 17 40 - Open 6 news pages in 43 69 6 new tabs. - Close the 6 tabs above. 35 54 - Open the same 6 news pages 44 71 in 6 new tabs again. - Close the 6 tags again. 38 53 So, after opening and closing the same tabs a second time, Firefox 3 still uses more memory than Firefox 2. Any idea? Thanks. \_ The delta between 2 "close the 6 tabs" lines is 3 megs for FF2 and -1 megs for FF3. The general problem with FF2 was it tended to leak memory over time. For a desktop app, an extra 10 megs is minimal, but since people like to have long lived browser sessions, FF2's habit of slowing growing up to 2 gigs of memory is a real problem. \_ Dunno, I notice better memory usage with lots of tabs open. Firefox 2 used to go into the 500 MB range after a while, Firefox 3 typically doesn't go above 400 MB. \_ I used to have to restart my browser every day. I don't have to with FF3. \_ FF3 does seem more crashy though. \_ Anyway, you made your point. He has extensive political connections to an ex-WU guy. A big yawner to me, but perhaps middle America cares. I kind of doubt it. |

9/3 What's so bad about community organizers? From the speeches tonight you'd think that was a euphenism for smoking reefer 24/7 \_ Since the GOP has nothing to run on, they're just running a Hate convention. \_ Since when has either part had anything to run on? For the last 6 years the Dems have been running on "Bush sucks" and and now they're running on a combination of "Bush sucks" and HOPE! and CHANGE! \_ Change is all you'll have if you vote for Dems! GH Bush \_ I don't know about you, but after 8 years of Bush and the GOP, I'm about ready for HOPE and CHANGE. \_ There are a whole lot more ways to change something for the bad than the good. Obama is basically running on Mcain = Bush! Scary! Which is obvious BS. \_ I don't think that's BS. McCain will continue the policies of Bush/Cheney. \_ In what way are McCain's policies different than Bush's? \_ Federal stem cell research funding. Being able to speak coherently. \_ So how exactly are you worse off? \_ Like I said, you've got nothing. \_ Does your life suck and you're blaming it on Bush? Dem party running against GOP: of course they're going to claim that this is the MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION EVAR and that therefore due to ???? they should be elected. The most significant changes we're talking about is stuff is almost completely dependent on the legislators in Congress, and not the president. i.e. the tax plan and healthcare plan. All the other stuff is just posturing. Do you think Russia is going to give a shit about having a guy who wants to talk to them more? Obama's going to use his magic inspirational charisma to bring about the Age of Aquarius. \_ Except Bush (or McCain) would veto the tax and healthcare changes we need. Not to mention the energy plan, which is a disaster under the GOP. \_ Haha, "changes we need". Care to go into specifics about energy? \_ That's right, changes we need. The Bush/McCain economic policies have been a disaster for all but the very richest: link:tinyurl.com/69jh74 Go read Obama's policy papers on energy, I don't have the time or inclination to recap them here. But they focus on conservation, not lying to the American people about how much oil we can get out of ANWR or some BS about "clean" coal. \_ I don't need those changes. Hence "we" is laughable. Obama can't shit oil. Conservation is not a long term plan. \_ "Conservation is not a long term plan"? What does that even mean? Conservation is an choice. The alternative is destruction. Conservation alone won't save the society, but without conservation you lose before you even start. -tom \_ Whatever... McCain focuses on conservation too, and Obama's energy plan ALSO talks about your "clean" coal. You guys are so stupid and full of shit. \_ McCain focuses on conservation? Is that why he's voted against improving fuel economy and pretty much every other conservation initiative, pretty much every time he's been given the opportunity? -tom \_ Please stop parroting left wing blogs. I'm obviously referring to the published "energy plans". Though McCain has in fact supported CAFE increases in certain forms (they quibble about timescales). But of course it's easy for Obama to say he is better because after all he has no track record to scrutinize. By the way, stuff like CAFE is BS. if energy self-sufficiency is a matter of national security and protection from foreign volatility (and it is), then we should have a fairly high tariff on all imported energy (e.g. oil). We should always have had this, and we should have kept pushing nuclear. \_ So you're saying that you put more faith in a campaign promise than you do in someone's actual voting record? Interesting. -tom \_ Obama voted for the '05 energy bill. He voted for more ethanol boondoggle, clean coal, oil and gas subsidies. Obama voted for the porky farm bill. That's not a voting record I'm happy with. \_ "We" means America here, obviously. Not what some selfish prick in the top 1% of income needs. We are all going into the tank if we don't control our energy usage and our health care expenses. Even you, I bet. \_ I think the OP understands that GOP is bashing Obama by labeling him as community organizer. But the questions is why community organizer specifically. What's bad about being a community organizer? (I wonder about the same questions.) \_ Community and Communist differ by one letter, 'nuff said. \_ 2 letters, actually. Go beah! \_ That's just tit-for-tat. The Obama campaign keeps refering to Palin as the mayor of Wasilla, so McCain calls him a community organizer. \_ You have your tats and your tits backwards. McCain has been calling him that long before Palin entered the scene. \_ Link? I hadn't noticed anyway. \_ I see. Thx. -- PP |

9/3 Caught a minute of the GOP convention, and I swear I heard Obama's name mentioned more often than McCain's. (Granted, in negative contexts, but still more often.) This seems... counter-productive. \_ It's been like this all year. The GOP literally has nothing positive to run on. \_ Vote for Our Guy! He's not... that guy! \_ Pretty much. \_ HOPE! CHANGE! \_ McCain's name was mentioned more in the Dem Convention than Obama's name was at the RNC. I guess the Dems have even less to run on? The R's appear to have a more uniform distribution whereas the Dems are completely focused on McCain and CHANGE! http://tinyurl.com/6yhfym [nytimes.com] |

I take back what I said about her being a light weight. \_ really. she sounded dumb as rocks, IMO, and the GOP women looked skeptical throughout most of the speech. but according to http://cnn.com,nytimes.com,washingtonpost.com,yahoo.com she turned in a 'star-turning performance' \_ Sorry, I meant Sarah not Bristol (obviously). |

Oh boo who she said an obscenity on air and apologizes. Well good thing that's over. Actually I didn't clue in on the fact she said "it's over". And I don't believe her, not one little bit. When she said "it's over", she meant it. She also refrains in her column discussing what she said her about the Palin pick: Todd: Is she really the most qualified woman? Noonan: The most qualified no. I think they went for this excuse me political bullshit about narratives.. So like I said earlier, please keep Palin! |
