The Americans who did that should be caned, at a minimum. \_ I mean in addition to individual disciplining. Just the "sorry about the bad apples in the US Military basket" doesnt seem like enough. It's not reasonable to claim "this was part of military interrogation" considering the "souvenir pictures" that were taken. 9/27 Say I want to kill processes older than x hours. If I make a list of PIDs, check the start time, and kill on that basis, there is a small possibility that that process will terminate after I've done the check but before I do the kill, and that another (possibly important) process will take on that PID, and I would thus end up killing this important process. Is there any way to avoid this race condition without going down to kernel level? Thanks. \- sure, lots of ways. check ppid, argv string, start time of process, etc. the rightway.easiest way probably depends on some details of how you are trying to do this but certainly you can with ps | awk/grep | (xargs|) kill. --psb \_ well, that mitigates it somewhat further, but does not remove the essential race condition. \- yes it does, if you do it correctly. or do you think something like PAWS isnt good enough either. --psb \_ no, it doesn't. it's still a race condition. pipes are not atomic. you should know better. there's still a slim chance that between the ps and the kill, the proc exits and another starts. -!op \_ If you check the start time like the first reply suggests, it should eliminate the problem. \_ yes, but what if time wraps around too? :9 \_ No, it's not atomic. It really would be nice to find out who has been selling my contact info to them.. \_ use a different middle initial each time you give out your name, or a different suffix or prefix, like jr. or sr., and keep track of who has what name. then all you have to do is ask them what your full name is in their database, and you have the culprit. \_ I think you mean "is there a law which forces telemarketers to disclose the party...". \_ A lot of times, they don't have access to that. They get all sorts of lists and compile them. I bet the data is encoded in the dB, but the lackeys who do the calls don't get that info on their screen. \_ ask for their manager \_ A friend of mine used to manager a telemarketer bank. She claims that the whole thing about "do not call lists" and such is bullshit because they're often just using the phone book. |

6/11 I highly recommend Amy Chua's book "World on Fire". She writes about how market-dominant minorities (chinese in SE asia, indians in east africa, jews in post-communist russia, whites in zimbabwe, etc) disproportionally benefit from free market economy. Blindly promoting democracy and free market leads to disaster in most third world countries. \_ OMG the jews are dominating the economy in Russia? Let's drag 'em all out and gas 'em. While we're at it, let's nail the chinks, the ragheads, and the honkies too. \_ Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer, baby. \_ Mugabe is solving the problem in Zimbabwe by allowing roaming thugs to murder white farmers and take their land. The result is that the already-bad food shortage is getting worse because the farmers who were actually farming have been killed. Oh, and the poaching of endangered species there is going through the roof due to the disorder. Yay. \_ He isn't "allowing". It is government sponsored and the thugs getting the best land are his own relatives and army generals. \_ Sorry about that. I didn't have any good references that made that claim. Thanks for clearing it up. \_ I've posted it to the motd before. I might be able to find it again if anyone cared. \_ What you miss is that economies can not transform third world cesspools into first world liberal democracies overnight. A complex set of institutions, such as the rule of law and property rights, must develop incrementally. This can be a painful experience (although less so than Marxism) - as evidenced in Western economic development. Also, her thesis, like most liberals, implicitly assumes some in vogue 'mascot' group has been victimized by another ethnicity, implying the group is unable to govern themselves. This is thinly veiled racism, and only perpetuates the problem by deflecting responsibility for their actions and the governments they support. With the libs its always Im a victim and its someone else's fault. \_ And free markets are the best way to establish the rule of law... \_ responsibility? for one's own actions? are you a Republican?! \_ Name one country that has followed the free market prescription to success in the 60 years since the end of WWII. All the countries that have tried: Russia, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, El Salvador, etc, are impoverished. The few countries that have risen from general poverty have all protected their markets, imposed tariffs on imports to help grow local industry, and avoided IMF and World Bank meddling: Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea. The Free Market ideologues have a good line of rhetoric, but a very poor track record. \_ For what purpose was the IMF was created? - hint post WWII reconstruction. Irony is all the states you mentioned have socialist / marxist tendencies. Chile, incidentally, under the nationalist anti-communist Pinochet has done quite well compared to its neigbors. Further, 'Free trade' and economic liberialism are not equivalent, and if you read my statement, nowhere did I imply as much. [indent corrected] \_ just curious on the motd opinions, where does israel fit into these discussions? aren't they a free market and how was it all established to work so much better than other nations? \_ If I order this book through Amazon, do I get put on the FBI potential terrorist list? |

2/5 Capitalism these days really sucks- I am a firm believer in capitalism but.... the ideas of capitalism assumes low barriers to entry. currently the barriers to enter industry have never been higher. I never understood why there are only 2 airplane producers, 8 car producers, 4 tire producers, 1 os producer, 5 hd producers, 2 chip producers, etc. we live the age of monopoly disquised as capitalism and competition. the taste of competition and the capitalist market are beyond the senses. We need to look no further than the dot com explosion. Finally an industry formed where the barriers to entry were low and the ideals of our creators were realized. However, what happened, the new industry had to transform itself to fit into our disquised capitalist system. we can also observe the market for communications services. The availability of massive amounts of financing allowed gradiouse network buildouts to attempt to compete against the like of ATT, Sprint, WorldCom and the Regional Bell (RBOC's). However in the end the forces of our economy pushed us into the direction of continued monopoly. To see this more explicitly one need only to open the business section of the paper. Our monopolistic firms are firing countless numbers of employees and at the same time announcing earnings in the BILLIONS of $$$. ExxonMobile announced 3B in PROFIT in what could the be harshest business environment in history. Citigroup anounced 3.3B in PROFIT in parhaps the harshest banking environment in HISTORY. If things are so bad and if we are operating in a recssion how can it be that our leading corporations are generating billions in profits. Simple, we do not operate or live in a capitalist system. Thus any attack on capitalism is not an attack on today's economy. We must derive new terms and new descriptions to attack the travesities of todays economic order which falsly disquises itself as capitalism. |

Since we have not had thousands dead in the war against Afghanistan, you cannot compare these two statistics. \_ It's not from 1 in 6 down to 3 out of thousands. It's from 1 in 6 in WWII up to 1 in 3 in Vietnam up to 3 in 4 in Afghanistan. Duh! \_ While I respect our soldiers, I don't understand why they automatically become heroes, or why we should feel like we owe them our life or something. I mean, these are professional soldiers, not draftees, and fighting is the sole purpose and goal of their job. I mean, if they did something above and beyond their call of duty, then I would call them heroes. \_ I was of the same opinion ten years ago so I understand you but I think you will find a different take on this as you get older and see more about where our security comes from. -- condescending old liberal fart \_ A lot of people contribute to our security. Not just soldiers. In fact, what our enemies fear most are our technology which our scientists and engineers contributed. \_ Absolutely! We laud and reward the scientists and engineers for their achievements. And recent events have shown that we mourn their passing in violence, as well. \_ Just for starters, 400,000 WWII, 50,000 Korean, and 50,000 Vietnam US soldiers gave their lives to protect your freedom. Have you no shame? \_ How did the Vietnam and Korean soldiers protect my freedom? \_ Like I said, most of those are draftees, so it is different. Also, soldiers at that time have a much higher risk of death or injury than soldiers in the Gulf War or War in Afghanistan. If we fight a high-casualty war today, we will be drafting people again. \_ What is the definition of friendly fire anyway? I've heard conflicting things... like shots during practice attacts, cross-fire in actual fighting, etc. \_ in response to no particular part of this thread, be grateful for the sacrafices that those in the US armed forces make to try and make this world a little safer for all of us. \_ I am as grateful to them as I am to our policemen, firemen, doctors, teachers, scientists and engineers. I do think that our armed forces personnel are underpaid though. They deserve to be paid well. |

9/21 What is the formal definition of a recession and depression? >dict depression 2: a long-term economic state characterized by unemployment and low prices and low levels of trade and investment >dict recession n 1: the state of the economy declines; a widespread decline in the GDP and employment and trade lasting from six months to a year >conclusion: depression = long term, recession = short term \_ A recession, at one time, was just that--a shrinking economy (not just decreasing economic growth) which often went hand in hand with a panic. Herbert Hoover coined the term "depression" to try and reassure people during the prolonged effects of the 1929 crash (it's just a little depression is all, or something to that nature)--it was probably taken ironically, and worked its way into common usage. -John |

7/17 Which of the current issues do you think will be UC's biggest reason for their downfall? 1) Creating UC Merced, 2) Abolishing the SAT, 3) Allowing them to consider race in admissions, or 4) Automatically accepting the top 4% of high school students? \_ Blatantly loaded question. First present a definition of "downfall" and hard evidence that the UC is undergoing "downfall" \_ 3 and 4. \_ True, it's loaded, and true there's no hard evidence I can give to prove it. But a hand-wavey explanation would be that the prestige of the UC system is going down, especially Cal's. Especially wrt Cal, they are riding on the high laurels that they used to have. Next, looking at Cal graduates (from ugrad and grad), they aren't as successfull/productive as those from other schools. Next, look at the intelligence (or whatever you wanna call it) of incoming students. Half are getting smarter (due to a more selective admissions process) and the other half are even dumber than before (due to automatic admissions, and most of all, our favorite: affirmative action). That latter half will help bring UC down even more. \_ gee, Cal managed to get along with affirmative action for 30 years...was it "riding on high laurels" then? (Whatever that means). -tom \_ lameness. why don't you realize this. Cal sucks for different things. if you like people to hire for a cube farm who will work hard and never complain until they get strokes from overwork, then cal's great. But if you want leaders and people who will inovate and come up with new ways of thinking, then look elsewhere. I'm not even sure cal grad school has it. \_ That's when it was making an effort providing high-quality professors (i.e. people who could do research AND teach; you don't find the teaching component part of the criteria anymore, unfortunately), recruiting high-quality students, and not let the bullshit politics and political correctness interfere with its mission. So, despite the affirmative action, it was successfull enough in the other areas. \_ really, what evidence do you have that teaching isn't part of recruitment criteria? I'm sure that the L&S Deans would be very surprised to hear that, seeing as how they're the ones actually doing the faculty searches. Oh wait, you're just an anonymous cowardly troll with no real point. Sorry I said anything. -tom \_ a friend of mine applied for a fulltime faculty position on the math department. he was working as soft-money part time faculty, and he told me all the department wanted was a list of publications and research qualifications, and did not even ask about teaching. perhaps the math department is worse than most cal departments, though. \_ Tom's right (throughout this thread), here are some URLs to support him; you come up with some evidence that contradicts below, THEN we'll have a argument. http://www.berkeley.edu/about/honors http://uga.berkeley.edu/sled/dta.html \_ Anonymity is irrelevant here. So...how do I know teaching isn't part of the recruitment criteria? Tell me you aren't that oblivious. Haven't you taken a course at Cal? Don't you see firsthand the quality of the "teaching"? So tell your L&S deans to do a better job, if you wanna keep playing that card. And...no need to apologize for saying anything. \_ Translation: "Cal was DAMN GOOD right up until I graduated. (Just like *me*!) Then it all started going to hell. Kids these days . . . " \_ Nah, it was already on the downhill while I was there. But now it's gonna plummet now, due to reasons 1-4 from above, though. That stuff DID happen after I graduated. \_ Cal engineering will be fine. There are a lot of poor bright people like me who prefer going to public school because its cheaper which allows us to graduate without being saddled with debt. \_ It has nothing to do with race. When I was in L&S CS, most of the students were oppurtunists who cheated on tests and did the minimum to get by. And most of these people were Asians. I'd say it has more to do with people who are unable to enjoy learning. And BTW, I'm also Asian who made it out with a 3.5 so it's not a jealously thing. \_ You graduated from L&S with only a 3.5? Damn you must have been slacking off. There is no excuse for graduating from L&S with under 3.8 since there is no real course work (except if you were math or physics, which you weren't). \_ I did REALLY bad freshman year. \_ The issue is that these people, myself included, didn't go to college "to learn." They go because you need it to get the big bucks. But really they just want to have fun and don't particularly give a shit about Scheme or n-channel mosfets or the OSI reference model. I liked learning about history. There's an inherent problem with my knowing history though: it's not particularly useful to ANYONE ELSE WHO WILL PAY ME. \_ I'll bet alot of history majors are making double your salary. |

3/30 "Whether or not AA is good is independant of the fact that Equal Opportunity statements are contradictory to AA. Does anyone have a response to this abuse of language issue?". First, let's take a specific, known institution: UC. See http://cois.chance.berkeley.edu/compliance/employ.html and http://www.ucop.edu/humres/policies/sp-2.html Current UC AA is much different than older AA. Older AA set quotas, less older AA used race/gender as a factor in addition to merit, more recent AA had race-limited outreach, and current AA lacks quotas, the race factor, and race-limited outreach, but does two things: Promote an atmosphere of "equal opportunity", and maintain non-race-based outreach programs. The atmosphere is created by things like: (1) Appending a phrase, like "[All] Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply[, including women and minorities]", (2) Making sure the job has been publicized through women and minority channels in addition to the traditional ones (which may be accessible mainly to non-minority groups), (3) Having literature that says there is no discrimination (the non-discrimination clause in the 1st paragraph of the first URL). The outreach programs used to be race-based, but because of Prop 209 should have been opened to all ethnic groups. This is AA as UC currently implements it. UC has no contradiction in its non-discrimination and AA statements. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the nationwide breakdown is on AA implementation; quotas are definitely out, factors are discouraged to some extent, and I think race-based outreach is what most institutions do these days. http://www.dol.gov/dol/esa/public/regs/compliance/ofccp/how2/ofcpch4.h! shows what the federal government thinks current AA for the construction industry should be like; notice how similar it is to UC AA. |

At least one of her black compatriots attempted to defend her, telling them that she was a friend. Four people were convicted and sentenced to 18 years. In July of this year, these four men were released from prison, granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (as required by the amnesty provision, they had fully confessed to the attack, including the individual who committed the fatal stab wound). Peter and Linda Biehl of Newport Beach, CA, released a public statement supporting the commission's decision, and have since regularly travelled to S. Africa to confirm to passersby that they have truly forgiven their daughter's killers, and towards fostering understanding between those who would be blood enemies. Whether each part of this story is right or wrong I don't say -- that you know that each part happened and think about it is what's important. When this disappears, ~jctwu/pub/biehl. |

4/14 I heard this on the song on the radio: "James Brown is dead". Is he really dead? If not, what is he doing lately? \_ No James Brown is not dead. In fact, he got of prision not too long ago. I will tell you, however, and with no doubt whatsoever, that James Brown is quite queer. Last I heard he performed at the \_ huh? second to the last superbowl. \_ This is a song by L.A.Style i believe. It has nothing to do with reality. |

03/12 I like Monkeys The pet store was selling them for five cents a pieace. I thought this was odd since they were normally a couple thousand. I decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth so I bought 200 of them. I like monkeys. I took my 200 monkeys home. I have a big car. I let one of drive. His name was Sigmund. He was retarded. In fact, none of them were really bright. They kept punching themselves in the genitals. I laughed. They punched me in the genitals. I stopped laughing. I herded them into my room. They didn't adapt very well to their new environment. They would screech and hurl themselves off the couch at high speeds and slam into the wall. Although humorous at first, the spectacle lost its novelty halfway into it's third hour. Two hours later I found out why all the monkeys were so inexpensive; they all died. No apparent reason. They all just sort of dropped dead. Kinda like when you buy a goldfish and it dies five hours later. God damn cheap monkeys. I didn't know what to do. There were 200 dead monkeys lying all over my room; on the bed, in the dresser, hanging from my bookcase. It looked like I had 200 throw rugs. I tried to flush one down the toilet. It didn't work. It got stuck. Then I had one dead, wet monkey and one hundred ninety-nine dead, dry monkeys. I tried to pretend that they were just stuffed animals. That worked for awhile, that is until they began to decompose. It started to smell real bad. I had to pee but there was a dead monkey in my toilet and I didn't want to call a plumber. I was embarrassed. I tried to slow down the decomposition by freezing them. Unfortuantely there was only enough room for two at a time, so I had to change them every 30 seconds. I also had to eat all the food in the freezer so it didn't go bad. I tried to burn them, but little did I know that my bed was flammable. I had to extinguish the fire. Then I had one dead, wet monkey in my toilet, two dead, frozen monkeys in my freezer, and one hundred ninety-seven dead, charred monkeys in a pile on my bed, The odor wasn't improving. I became agitated at my inability to dispose of the dead monkeys and I really had to use the bathroom. So I went and severely beat one of the monkeys. I felt better. I tried throwing them away but the garbage man said the city was not allowed to dispose of charred primates. I told him I had a wet one. He couldn't take it either. I didn't bother asking about the frozen ones. I finally arrived at a solution. I gave them out as Christmas gifts. My friends didn't quite know what to say. They pretended to like them, but I could tell they were lying. Ingrates. So I punched them in the genitals. I like monkeys. |

4/25 I need a way for a child thread to know that a parent has died. SIGCLD does the opposite, and I can't find the signal that does what I want. I ultimately would like my thread to die when my terminal is dead (ttyXX is unwrittable). \_ Use the uncle thread to inform the child thread. Break the news gently, though. |

4/9 Massive campus power failure from 7:15 to about 11:30 hoses lots of things. Soda didn't come up properly; one disk didn't power up and scrambled all the mount entries for the rest of the partitions. This made entire users directories appear gone. This has been rectified. Everything seems to have survived this ordeal relatively intact... -ERic |
