3/21 Browser Plug-In you must get: Ghostery. It gets rid of a bunch of ad trackers on a web site, resulting in really fast load times. For example, a typical media site will require 10-15 trackers (you know, those URLs that track your activities so they can target you better). Ghostery kills them. \_ This has been working well for me, and breaks fewer things than NoScript etc. |

5/18 On my Win7 machine, I've been using a PuTTY ssh session to soda as a proxy for my FireFox to bypass my company's OpenDNS when I visit http://tv.yahoo.com and so on. It has been working fine for a long while. However, in the past couple weeks or so, my FireFox would either take several minutes to load the page, or failes to load it after several minutes. I haven't changed any settings on my Win7 machine. Rebooting didn't help either. Is there any change on soda recently that could cause this? Thanks. |

Are they planning to turn off some security feature in my version of Firefox? \_ Not as such, no, but they're no longer developing this version, so if a 3.6.x-targeted hack shows up, you're not going to get any official patch or release to fix it. Can I do the same with PuTTY in XP? 2. How do I tell FireFox to use this? Thanks. -- another idiot, !OP \_ Yes, Putty can do it too. Dynamic proxy on port 8080. Firefox natively supports SOCKS proxies. \_ When my FireFox uses the "No proxy" setting, every time I go to a site it goes through the DNS on the company network which blocks some sites. How do I force FireFox to go through the "proxy" or "tunnel" that PuTTY has just set up on the local machine? -- PP \_ set it to use socks proxy on whatever port \_ Specifically, use "Manual proxy configuration". Enter "localhost" for the SOCKS proxy, and whatever port number you picked for the dynamic port forwarding in PuTTY as the port number. If you want DNS to go through the proxy too, go to about:config, type "dns", and set "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" to true. \_ It works! 9/4 Someone asked yesterday about the Obama/Ayers link. It took me a while to find a link I was happy with, this one is ok. This guy goes into excruciating detail about the Annenberg Challenge and CAC over a number of blog posts. The full Annenberg documents were only recently released, and this post predates the release. The documents are still being digested, so this is far from the final word. Anyway, it is pretty obvious that Obama and Ayers had a close working relationship for at least 6 years (the real relationship almost cetainly predates this), in which they funneled millions to Ayers' causes and students. It's also quite obvious that Obama has been highly disingenous about this relationship, and many of his statements about it have been blatant falsehoods. ("Our kids went to school together", etc) http://csua.org/u/m9b \_ Yes, Obama supports terrorism and wants to KILL WHITEY. \_ It looks like Obama has really been trying to improve the schools, which is great. I think I am going to give him another $2300. \_ Might want to look into what he was spending that money on first. The challenge itself was deemed an utter flop. $100mil down the hole. \_ Deemed an utter flop by who? This guy is not a reliable source. http://preview.tinyurl.com/554pov The Annenberg Challange is hardly the radical far-left proposal this guy makes it out to be. \_ Sorry, it was a flop _in Chicago_. That is, it had no effect on student performance in Chicago. Your link is an overall evaluation, so not really interesting for this discussion. Also, it was deemed a flop by the Consortium of Chicago School Research (CCSR) in 2003. \_ Yes, that is interesting. I will have to do some more research. But I think it is amusing that an effort to try and weaken the hold of the teacher's union is called a communist tactic by this guy. \_ I with you agree there. -op \_ I agree with you there. -op here are some new numbers (VM Size in MB reported by Task Manager): 2.0.0.16 3.0.1 - Startup, empty the cache. 13 23 - Go to http://www.yahoo.com 17 40 - Open 6 news pages in 43 69 6 new tabs. - Close the 6 tabs above. 35 54 - Open the same 6 news pages 44 71 in 6 new tabs again. - Close the 6 tags again. 38 53 So, after opening and closing the same tabs a second time, Firefox 3 still uses more memory than Firefox 2. Any idea? Thanks. \_ The delta between 2 "close the 6 tabs" lines is 3 megs for FF2 and -1 megs for FF3. The general problem with FF2 was it tended to leak memory over time. For a desktop app, an extra 10 megs is minimal, but since people like to have long lived browser sessions, FF2's habit of slowing growing up to 2 gigs of memory is a real problem. \_ Dunno, I notice better memory usage with lots of tabs open. Firefox 2 used to go into the 500 MB range after a while, Firefox 3 typically doesn't go above 400 MB. \_ I used to have to restart my browser every day. I don't have to with FF3. \_ FF3 does seem more crashy though. \_ Anyway, you made your point. He has extensive political connections to an ex-WU guy. 6/19 Any comments on Firefox 3? Does it live up the promise? \_ I want to like it but safari ui still looks so much nicer \_ No it's too stupid. It's got features no one would use. Just look at the multi-tab feature. Why would anyone ever want to use multiple tabs? I don't use it, and no one should either. Stupid! \_ It does seem to be better at not leaking memory / over-caching stuff so far. Other than that, I'm not noticing any really significant usability differences. 6/16 Firefox 3 coming out tomorrow. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20080612/bs_nf/60269 Memory usage - Firefox 3 Beta vs. Firefox 2 vs. IE 7: http://blog.pavlov.net/2008/03/11/firefox-3-memory-usage \_ There's a rule that says NEVER BE THE FIRST TO TRY IT. I'm going to let Firefox3 version 1 hammer out bugs first. \_ Um, I've been running the beta and RCs for several weeks now, and it's vastly better than v2. \_ Why are they reinventing garbage collection? \_ Because Firefox is written in a non garbage collected language. Because Firefox includes an interpeter for a garbage collected language with some complicated object lifespan issues. Because there is more to reducing memory footprint than garbage collection. Because implementing is not the same as reinventing. But most importantly: Because there is much more to reducing memory footprint than garbage collection. language with some complicated object lifespan issues. Because implementing is not the same as reinventing. But most importantly: Because there is much more to reducing memory footprint than garbage collection. \_ Uh yes, but they're worried about cycles? Who reference counts anymore? \_ The lifespan of a javascript object is a complicated beast. \_ In the past javascript was used sparingly and reference counting was easy and fast. Yes there were leaks, but once you closed a page the browser could just dump dump everything associated with that page and move on. It worked. Doing a good mark and sweep gc is hard, especially with how firefox handled javascript execution. Getting that right takes significant programing. (For instance until ie7, ie was even worse about javascript leaks, and they have a much larger team, although at least ie doesn't run javascript in the ui thread, does firefox 3 still do that?) |

11/12 How many people actually like Firefox 2.0 new tabs where there's a close button on every tab, and that you have to scroll left/right when you have too many tabs? \_ Fix it in about:config http://csua.com/?entry=45520 \_ I like the tabs in Fx, but I usually use Ctrl-W to close and Ctrl-TAB to switch. \_ There's a dropdown tab selector thing. I hate the close button on tab deal, but that's easy to fix in about:config. What I really wish FF had was if you drag a tab off the window it becomes a new window with that tab. I think Safari and Opera do that now. FF creates a shortcut if you do that, how stupid. \_ The about:config for FF allows you to modify that behavior. I've fixed it. \- i dont think the failure-to-read is the lack of quality fiction. also, i dont think reading pulp fiction [at least for adults] is any different from watching tv. reading the da vinci code is really mentally the same as watching desperate hwives. \_ I guess I disagree re the failure-to-read. I used to try to find new fiction to read whenever I went to the library, but it was almost all universally bad (except for the occasional mystery novel), so I've sort of given up. I agree re things like da vinci code. That sort of crap is really fit only as kindling. \_ So what, you already read all the old fiction? Books require more patience, reading comprehension, imagination. They are not saturated with commercial marketing. It seems most people can't even read the pulp. \- this might apply to children ... which is why i restricted my comments to adults. my old housemate has an mba from mit/sloan and is more or less retired before 50, and reasonably informed about the world ... so reasonably successful and not a dumbass. the "can" read pulp ... he just doesnt. he reads 0 fiction, and maybe 0-2 nonfic per year (usually a practical/howto book). judging him differently because he read a james patterson mystery instead of watching dvds/tv would be silly. he'd be the same person. on the other hand, somebody who goes though 20 books a year including 5 "challenging" books would be a different person if they replaced that time with tv. \_ So what, you already read all the old fiction? 4/6 I got a url that looks like http://www.whatever.com/祢.mp3 How should I encode this link so that every browser (including lynx) can understand it? \_ If your file really is named 祢, you should encode it as http://www.whatever.com/%26%2331074%3B.mp3 (replace each weird character with a percent sign and the character's ASCII value in hex). If your file is actually named with a Chinese character, it's more complicated. With a modern server and browser, you can just put a Chinese character right into the URL. If you have a modern server but you want to support old or non-Chinese browsers, convert the characters to UTF-8, break them into bytes, and percent-encode each byte -- for your example, that would become http://www.whatever.com/%E7%A5%A2.mp3 If you have an old server, do the same thing, but instead of UTF-8, use whatever encoding the server uses for filenames (probably Big5 or GB). --mconst \_ Yes, that's what I am looking for. \_ Yes, that's what I am looking for. 11/8 Firefox 1.5.0.8 is out. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html \_ Why do you keep posting FF releases? Anyone running 1.5.x is going to get the popup alert, anyone not doesn't care. \_ You only get the popup alert if you run an official build, I think. I build from source (because FF doesn't have an official build for my platform), and I don't get a popup. -!op \_ What platform? \_ FreeBSD \_ Run the linux version. \_ Which, last I checked, required that you have compat_linux enabled on most BSDs; pp may not not want to do. \_ Is 1.5.0.8 or 2 less memory hungry? |

11/01 Firefox Session Saver, the best extension I've ever used. \_ Firefox 2.XX has this "built in", kind of non intuitive to find but it's there. you'll notice Session Saver doesn't install in Firefox 2.XX \_ Just FYI, that's Opera's default behavior, and has been for years. \_ I know Opera is supposed to be fast as lightning, but when I try to use it there's just too much crazy crap going on and I go back to Firefox. \_ I tried Opera when they released for free last year(?). No tabbing feature that I could see. Deleted. \_ The MDI interface has been there for years. Maybe you missed the subtle distinction? \_ Honestly, I have no idea. I looked through the whole interface for something that looked like tabbing. It may have been there in some form but if it requires above my miniscule computer abilities to find it might as well not. \_ It's not necessary anymore with Firefox 2.0. |

10/24 So why is Firefox at 2.0 now? Granted this revision is a bit bigger than most minor revisions, but neither the program architecture or plugin interface changed much. \_ Marketing? I get an error that some script is taking too long to run and I should abort it. This didn't happen on FF1.5.x. \_ Works for me with FF2.0 200+ movies in queue. \_ Hmm, maybe it is b/c I have 400+ movies in my queue. \_ They might have just tweaked the max time value; you can change it yourself via about:config, look for dom.max_script_run_time --dbushong |

10/22 Using Windows XP Pro. I got an Iomega external hard drive to use to backup my internal hard drive over a year ago. I then installed the software. Since then, whenever I start up my computer, the software would start up and then go to the background. No problem. Today, for some reason, it starts up and then freezes up and doesn't respond. I can manually end the process, but I can't actually get into the program, because it just freezes up when I start it up. So, I'll have to manually end the process every time I turn on the computer and I can't actually use the program. How can I stop it from starting up automatically (it doesn't seem to be there in the Startup folder)? And how can I somehow get it to not freeze up so I can use it again some day to backup my computer? \_ http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html \_ No idea about your freezing but it sounds like either something else you installed is incompatible with your iomega ware or maybe there's a hardware/cable problem which is causing the ware to wig out. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the ware and see what happens. |

7/14 Has all mail been delivered? \_ In the words of Ted Stevens ("internet expert"): The internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand that those tubes can be filled, and if they're filled when you put your message in it, it gets in line, it's gonna be delayed by anyone who puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. Ten movies streaming across that that, internet, and what happens to your own personal internet? I...just the other day, got internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday. Why? \_ So, I think your answer is, no, it's not all been delivered, never has been, never will be. Let me rephrase my question. Has mail been delivered to the extent that it normally would be, or is there still a significant percentage of the mail from when sendmail was down that hasn't been delivered yet? It seems that some of my mail is missing. Not sure if it's just 1 message, or a significant percentage. -op \_ I think the intelligent way to interpret this question, is for someone in the know to tell us if mail was queued on another machine during extended periods of downtime, and if not, approximately how long that non-queueing-of-mail went on for. |
