2/19    I program a lot by sshing to a Linux cluster.  So I'm used to using
        Xemacs to code.  This works fine from a Linux or Windows workstation,
        but sometimes I have to use a Mac.  On Mac, the meta is usually
        bound to option, but that often doesn't work over ssh for some reason.
        This makes using emacs a real pain.  Any suggestions on how to fix it?
        (Other than "use vi")
        \_ Are you using Terminal.app?  If so, go to the Terminal menu, click
           the Preferences... menu item, click the Settings button on the top
           of the window that pops up and then click the Keyboard button/tab
           in the right hand pane of that window.  There should be a checkbox
           at the bottom of that pane that says "Use option as meta key".
           Checking that box fixed this problem for me.

5/4     Any thoughts about apple switching to ARM for all machines?
        \_ Could only have happened if the Mac App Store had been a wild, wild
           success, and they were willing to give up Steam. Games/dual-booting
           is strategically valuable to not driving people away from macs.
           A new ARM iOS based device, or opening the Apple TV to iOS apps
           (same thing, really) would be much more likely than sabotaging their

           OSX ui then your ui code will be pretty much useless elsewhere,
           but that's why concepts like MVC are so important.  Otherwise
           OSX is pretty much standard unix (with case insensitive files,
           grr) and most of your work will be easilly portable.

              pretty easy to work around it by doing you development on
              a UFS or HFS+ case sensitive disk image.
              Re original question - I used to do perl, java, & c development
              for Solaris & Linux on OS X.  As a side effect, my application
              for Solaris & Linux on OS X.  As a side effect, our application
              worked on OSX (but we didn't ship an OS X version) and I was
              worked on OS X (but we didn't ship an OS X version) and I was
              able to find lots of OS dependencies in our code and abstract
              them away, making future porting to other OSes much easier.

           In summary: Picasa should be available on the Mac now and
           you can upload easily. It'll downsize for you (if you wish)
           before uploading it to Picasaweb.

        a VM, too. I think students will get more bang for their buck
        trying to run services on MacOS than with "Just Another Linux Box".

              compile X11 from source and learned a lot about it that way.
              Now it ships with the OS. Can you run your favorite window
              manager on MacOS under X11? TWM would be awesome. Enquiring

11/3    Anyone point me to a solution for OSX  mac printing to a windows domain\
based computer that requires authorising. All the syntax that I have seen in var\
ious posts does not work (e.g. smb://username:password@machine/queue ). I was wo\
ndering if I should just accept it and wait until smbpool is fixed? Connecting\

10/6    A question for the Mac geeks out there. I bought a new SDHC Card for my\
        camera and find that my card reader will not read it. Its identical in
        size and shape to smaller cards (.e.g. 1G) which are read just fine.
        I checked the Belkin web site to no avail. I am guessing that this

9/21    So I did it and got myself a Macbook Pro. Any suggestions for the best
        PC->Mac transition?  After finding out that Outlook is not supported
        under Mac; I bought parallels and am installing XP to grab my outlook
        mail archive (~1GB) from the original PC disk (the pc itself is
        basically dead). Any suggestions on a relatively painless import to
        entourage? The Mac Genius guy also reccomended an upgrade to 4GB and
        said that you needed to buy an upgrade kit and ; unlike PC; all RAM
        is not created equal pgrade kit and ; unlike PC; all RAM
        is not created equal. Can Ibuy this from frys or do I need to order it

        \_ Hi.  "CCC" is a free mac program known as "Carbon Copy Cloner".
           If you use a Mac, and have some sort of external usb or firewire
           drive, I recommend you spend 15 minutes downloading it and
           setting it up.  You can easily make a backup set up your data,
           set up incremental backups, and even make a nice bootable image
           of your drive onto your external usb drive, so when the disk
           on your Mac finally fails (all drives fail eventually), it's
           just a few minutes work getting up again (after you replace the
           drive obviously).  I'm not trolling, I'm just describing
           my experience, my Mac is not running a terabyte SAN NAS fiber
           highly available hot swapping RAID, calm the fuck down.
