8/14 Any good experiences with automated MP3 tagger/renamer/organizer?
I've got some stuff that has good file names, some with good ID3s info,
and some with neither, so musicbrainz support might be nice.
FreeBSD, Win2k, or OS X, hopefully less than $40?

Mac. 80% want one. And the rest are voting for Bush.
\_ What does voting for Bush have to do with owning a
                       Mac?

7/26 is there a way to list the file in your user space that has the largest
size? (Thank you all for the help except that idiot posted the rm
        command)
        \_ rm -Rf ~/
\_ does anyone ever use R instead of r?
        \_ ls | sort | head
\_ ls -lR | sort +4rn But this won't tell you which directory
                                  the files are in.
        \_ du -k $HOME | sort -nr -k1,1 | head
This should give you the files sizes of the largest files and
directories in your home directory. If you want just files:
           { find $HOME -depth -type f -print0 | \
             xargs -0 ls -l | sort -rn -k5,5 ; } 2> /dev/null | head
BTW, -print0 and xargs -0 only work on *BSD, OS X and Linux.

7/14 I bought several Intel GigE nics and one of them has a
bad mac addr (all ff's). dmesg shows the card as detected,
and proc/pci lists it, but ifconfig doesn't show an eth*
entry for it. Does anyone know how I can set the mac addr
so that I can use the card? (I'm using RH 9, but I can
just as easily stick the card in a WinXP, FreeBSD or
OpenBSD box). The card has a 82540 chip if that is of
        any use. tia.
\_ I'm curious. Why don't you want to return the card?
\_ maybe s/he's curious about this. Why do think OP
doesn't want to return the card?
\_ If I can get the card working, then I wouldn't
have to deal with the hassle of getting a RMA
and shipping it back and waiting for a new one.
I'm planning on buying several dozen more of
these cards in the future and in case I run
into this problem again, I'd like to know if
it is possible to fix it.
\_ Return it. You've already had more hassle. You know that
the others work, so this one is defective. Send it back
                 and leave us alone.
\_ Return it. You've already had more hassle.
You know that the others work, so this one

                 alone.
\_ Some cards have the MAC address printed on them somewhere.
\_ I know what the MAC address is supposed to be,
I just need a way of manually setting it up
in the eeprom of the card (linux says that
the eeprom contains an invalid chksum, and
the windows based card test utility from
intel says that it can't read the eeprom)
\_ Maybe that means the eeprom is bad? I think you're
                 trying to hard.
\_ FreeBSD allows you to set the MAC address. On bootup via
/etc/start_if.fxp0 or you can do it manually. Either way:
           ifconfig fxp0 ether <mac address>
           Yours won't be fxp0, it'll be whatever.
\_ Thanks, I'll give it a shot today.
\_ It might work on your broken card, but I agree with the
others who say you should RMA it.

7/14 Any ideas on why Mozilla/Firefox/etc is so slow on OSX? Even Camino,
"designed from the ground up for OSX," is really bad.
\_ Slow? FF seems as fast as Safari to me. Load time is slower than
Safari, but once it is loaded I can't really tell any difference.
\_ Did you try resizing the browser window? That was where I
noticed the big difference. I'm on a recent G4 Powerbook
              running 10.3.x.
\_ I loaded the same http://amazon.com page in FF and Safari
just now and tried resizing the page. Both FF and
Safari seem to resize at about the same speed on
my iBook G4 (800 MHz model).
\_ Odd. Which OS version are you running?
\_ 10.3.4. I have 640 mb of ram, maybe that
is the difference? BTW, resizing isn't
that fast, its just that they are both
                         about the same speed.
\_ Why is everything so slow in OSX?
\_ Heh. Ever done a side by side comparison of OSX with any
other GUI? Lynx doesn't count, nerdling.
\_ OSX is sure slow, compared it to the previous Mac GUI,
compared it to Win2K, compared it to WinXP, compared it
to X on Solaris and Linux. OSX is just damn slow.
\_ If you are running anything other than twm on
Linux/Solaris, there is no way that I can buy
your story that the GUI is faster. BTW, when
they add features like print to pdf and Expose
to X11, lets see how fast it is.

7/8 I have a big C++ program that uses tons of memory. What tools would
for some reason I read that as mercury _/
be useful to figure out where that memory is going? What I'm
imagining is something that works like Quantify, except instead of
time for function & time for function + descendants, I want memory
for structure & memory for structure + descendants. Context would also
be useful (i.e. the call stack when the structure was first created).
         Any thoughts? Currently platform-agnostic.

\_ gprof (gcc) will tell you which constructors are being called
frequently, which helped me track down mem usage. If you're
willing to try it on KDE/Linux, check out valgrind-- I've heard
it's really good for this sort of thing. (Both are free).
        \_ Does Purify do this?
\_ Don't think so. It keeps track of leaks etc. but I don't think
              it does usage.
        \_ valgrind?
\_ Linux only, and though cool, doesn't match too well with what I
              want.
\_ If you can use Mac OS X there are a number of good tools. man

5/24 I'd like to create a small (2 page) weekly newsletter that will be
online and also printed out and distributed as PDF. Does anyone have
recommendations for good-quality software that can achieve either or
both of these goals? The only requirements are that it is easy to
add/archive documents, and that it is converted to PDF without much
        effort. Thanks.
        \_ openoffice
\_ I'd prefer something that didn't depend on a unix platform.
Thinking of the long term (~2 years from now), people that
take over publishing this newsletter probably won't know
anything but Windows or Mac. -op

\_ Can't make PDF for free on windows, AFAIK. But you can
on OS X I hear. Acrobat can be, uh, acquired for Win.
Actually nevermind there is OpenOffice for Windows.
\_ WRONG, it does make PDF files on Windows without
                         installing anything else.
\_ you people are weird, I said "nevermind there is

that feel thay have to assert this fact.
\_ OS X has "Save as PDF" integrated into most editors.
Doesn't work too well with Open Office, however. Grr.
\_ Uh, there's OpenOffice for Windows too. And as for
free PDF solutions on Windows... hello, GhostScript?
\_ I remember trying that GS thing before, it was pretty
crappy. Just a PITA. Maybe it's better now.
chindipy. Just a PITA. Maybe it's better now.
heh, i just saw this site: http://www.ps2pdf.com
\_ there isn't much to GhostScript.
                            1. Install a PostScript printer driver (e.g. the
                               free PostScript driver from Adobe)
                            2. Run GhostScript's ps2pdf script.
                            3. There is no step 3.
                            \_ PROFIT!
\_ I think I had to fiddle with some fonts and
that postscript driver shit and printing
to files is annoying. Obviously not a huge deal.
\_ Do it in HTML and have Mozilla print to PDF.
        \_ http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator -dwc
\_ OS X can print to PDF with ease. You said you wanted Mac or PC, and
it's trivial with a Mac. File > Print > Save to PDF.
\_ In the windows world there are much cheaper PDF deistillers than
Adobe (like around 30 bucks). They may not be quite as full
featured, but for a small newsletter you don't need all those
odds and ends. You might wanna bite the bullet and spend the
cash, it will be a lot easier for non geeks to use.

\_ cmucl. The sbcl fork runs on Darwin. -- ilyas
\_ sbcl forked some time ago and is not really the same as cmucl
anymore. Franz's Allegro (originated from CS dept at Cal) is
either free or costs a fortune, depending on the license. Also
available is openmcl, which is the only free one that has an
(experimental) cocoa interface (never tried it). gcl also works
now but isn't it still CLtl1? clisp is of course very slow.
You probably want to try sbcl and openmcl first. Somehow it

\_ Tnx. But is there a way to directly set the manual ip addr
by modifying a file? My PB has some hardware problem so that
I cannot login from the console though it boots up normally.
I am trying to fix its IP in FW target mode and then ssh it
in normal mode. Right now I don't know its ip addr. Oh wait,
maybe I just found the file, though its a messy xml file.
\_ Well, if you can access your file via FW target mode,
you don't really need ssh. But if you do and you have
sshd and DHCP running, you could always just do a
broadcast ping on its subnet and ssh into the IP addr
                 that responds to it.
\_ why don't you boot into single-user mode?

to put down as the router address for the two?
Can I leave it blank as there is no need ro one?
\_ yes. other solutions: use a USB keyboard,
or broadcast ping from the other computer to
discover the 169.254.x.x private IP on the Mac.
\_ I can now ping the bad PB, but can't ssh to it
even though I set hostconfig corectly (it's 10.2.8).
What's wrong? Guess I am giving up and buying

1/26 I just transfered several thousand files from a Mac to a PC. Macs don't
have file extensions so is there any UNIX utility (or PC utility) that
will differentiate between word and excel files so that I can
programmatically add the .xls and .doc extensions? "file" simply says
        "Microsoft Word" document.
\_ write an applescript. Unfortunately, I don't know the syntax for
grabbing creator codes from the finder. Maybe someone else on
here does. Applescript documentation is horrible.
\_ What I ended up doing was using perl to traverse the directory
hierarchy. I changed all :'s to -'s (PCs don't like :'s) and add
.xls extensions to each file. This is somewhat lame, but 95% of
the files are excel files and I was able to do this in less than
10 minutes (I already had the perl readdir traversal code handy,
I just had to find it)... of course, I did all this before asking
on the motd bc i didn't think i'd find any useful information here.
I'd still be interested in a nice solution (ideally, someone would
tell me that I just need to upgrade my version of file)
\_ you should rename the files while they are on the Mac.

Uh. can you transfer them to a more modern mac first?
\_ It only took him 10 minutes this way.
\_ 'file' depends on the 'magic number' which is stored in a file.
you only really needed an updated magic file.
\_ This came up on google under "automatically macintosh file
extensions". I bet you can find more:
           http://peccatte.karefil.com/software/MacNames/MacNamesEN.htm
\_ using perl, you can issue the file command recursively through
your dirtree and dump the results into a text file. You can
then open up the text file and issue a rename accordingly to
each of the files it finds. Should take about an hour to write
           up in perl. -williamc
\_ An hour? It should take about 5 minutes in any shell. On a
bad day. Between commercials and surfing. This is a good
time for sed/awk for those too lazy to use the search/replace
              function on their text editor.
\_ Hmmm, apparently you don't do any "shell scripting" on a PC
                 in Windows/DOS.
This can be done in five minutes on a UNIX machine, but
with Windows through a DOS VM box (assuming you're not
using cygwin) I'd have to spend some time testing it to
make sure it was functioning correctly. If using
the find command you'd have to figure out how to
dump the information into an intermediate text file
and parse the contents. Regardless, I'd like to see
your five minuts solution posted on the motd, it will
be informative. Also, wtf does does your text editor
have to do with identifying binary files??? Reading
comments like these makes you think that the poster
didn't understand the problem domain. -williamc
\_ i'm not the guy above, but you might want to consider
posting anonymously, lest people associate "williamc"
with "talking out of his ass". cygwin often works
*just fine*, and i don't see any reason to believe it
wouldn't in this case. as the OP has already mentioned
though, 'file' doesn't give enough information to
distinguish between word and excel files. but even
supposing it did, you would either want to use sed/awk
to massage the output into an easier to parse format,
or use a text editor to do it if you don't know how
to use sed/awk. perhaps you should keep quiet instead

10 minutes (I already had the perl readdir traversal code handy,
I just had to find it)... of course, I did all this before asking

1/26 Is there a program for Mac that catches programs making unauthorized
        network access/"call home".
\_ Sounds like you want 'Little Snitch':
           http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch
(This is OS X only, not sure if there was something like this for
            OS 9).
        \_ it's called a firewall.
\_ most home firewalls only block incoming.. and allow unrestricted
access outgoing. since he said "call home" i assume he means
\_ Yes a firewall can do that. But how is your firewall is going
to tell the legitimate outgoing traffic (say web browsing) from
such "call-home" connections unless you start monitoring all
outgoing traffic or doing something equally inconvenient?
something more like zonealarm pro but for mac
\_ what you're talking about is a router that does NAT. Any
decent software firewall will check inbound and outbound
                 connections.
\_ Yes a firewall can do that. But how is your firewall is
going to tell the legitimate outgoing traffic (say web
browsing) from such "call-home" connections unless you
start monitoring all outgoing traffic or doing something
                     equally inconvenient?
\_ OP wants zone alarm for the mac.
\_ because any firewall that isn't totally stupid will
ask you, "hey, program X is trying to send packets to
Y on port Z. Do you want to allow this once, always,
                        not this time, or never?"
\_ Which is completely inconveniet and unacceptable to
lots of users. Many of the sites I visit every day I
visit for the first time and I don't want to be asked
every minute the same stupid question. Most firewalls
have that feature turned off by default for a good
                           reason.
\_ ZoneAlarm by default only warns you when a new
program tries to access the net, not when the
same program tries to access a new site. So
after the first day you almost never get new
dialog boxes. Get a clue. -tom
\_ I used a simple example, but any decent
software firewall is rule-based. Rules look
like: "Always allow connections from Mozilla.
Allow connections from ssh, but only to csua.
Deny all connections from Photoshop. Ask me
about anything else." It's not that hard.
Good firewall programs will let you create
rules when they initially prompt you. Yes,
you might get a prompt the first time you
start your web browser, but not for each site,
unless *you* *choose* to configure your
                              firewall that way.
\_ Which "firewall" checks if an outgoing traffic is generated by
              some spyware/MS rather than ssh/mozilla?
\_ most firewall will tell you the name of the file which is
                 trying to gain access.

10/28 I've used PC&UNIX for most of my life and after trying to use the Macs
for only a week, I LOVE IT!!! Here's a question for you Mac users--
has anyone NOT like the Macs after trying them out?
\_ yes. i hated those fucking things from the day they came out
and apple abandoned their last decent line of computers
(the apple II). I hate the prices, I hate the interface, I hate
the look and feel of the desktop, I hate Steve Jobs, and I hate
the fanatical jerkoffs who seem to get off from telling
everyone else how great they think macs are. and yes, i have
been forced to use macs quite a bit at various times in the past.
\_ I don't know whether to hand you a tissue or a prozac.
        \_ USE PC&UNIX! LOVE MAC!
\_ The buttons to close and minimize windows are in the wrong place
The mouse has ONLY ONE BUTTON!
\_ you can use a different mouse.
\_ Not with the laptops unless you don't mind the inconvenience
\_ I've only need a multi-button mouse for some FPS games, and
I can easily plug in my favorite trackball for those. I
starting using a mac about a year and a half ago and I can't
say I miss dealing with broken Windows or Unix boxes. -meyers
\_ hint: macosx is a unix box with a proprietary gui. what
unix boxes have you used? linux doesn't count.
\_ Since you asked: aix, hpux, solaris, freebsd, and linux.
I like Apple's UI, and apps that implement to it. Having
each app do it's own thing with the UI makes using it
                    a pain. -meyers
\_ So you prefer that application writers are forced to
write apps to whatever the OS says it should be like?
Without the ability to create and try new ways of
doing things we'll always have the same shitty 1985
era GUI forever. More colors, more pretty bells and
shiney whistles but still crap. And entire new kinds
of applications that don't fit that particular
highly arbitrary GUI model will never be created.
\_ Calm down there. I do more than open xterms to
other machines, so an fvwm-like window manager
just doesn't do what I want. What do you suggest,
the crappy microsoft interface? twm? bash? -meyers
\_ Yes. I once had to work on a whole lab full of G3s and G4s.
I found MacOS X to be sort of a unix, but sort of broken, like
waking up and you think you're in normal life, but really you've
           entered the just-oh-so-slightly-reality-shifted dimension of
           evil things. -John
\_ So what you're saying is that you didn't like the flavor of
Unix that came with the Mac. What did you think of the MacOS
              experience itself? --erikred
\_ I went back to Mac after years on a PC. I like it, but its tough
in a PC-centric world. Software is hard to come by and things break
(e.g. web sites). I like a Mac, but only in *addition* to a PC.
\_ Yeah, I feel the same way about BeOS.
\_ expensive, fragile hardware, in-your-face GUI, stupid
Capitalization in the file system /Home/Users/ or something.
inefficient form factors. noisy. was the powerMAC G4 nicknamed
"windtunnel"? but even with all those issues, new Mac's are way
better than any PC running Microsoft Windows.
\_ Better? That's a funny word. Care to define what is 'better'
about it other than a religious anti-Microsoft mantra?
\_ the browser is standars-complaint, it has SSH and a real
command-line environment. The power management is great,
the networking is great, it's stable. you can login to
your computer remotely using ssh and actually do things.
There's ton's of free Open source software that runs on
OSX, Apple doesn't have "activation" spyware.

10/22 Just bought a Mac but I REALLY want to use a PC keyboard. Are there
PC to Mac keyboard converters out there (PS2 to USB for example),
and which keys correspond to Option and the Open Apple keys?
\_ I think most MS Natural keyboards come with a PS2->USB dongle.
           grab one from a friend.
\_ Only the MS Natural Keyboard Elite has the PS/2->USB adapter.
The fancier and more basic ones do not. The generic
PS/2->USB adapters for the most part suck.
\_ If you do this, don't you lose some of the apple key functions?
           \_ The question implies that.
\_ /Applications/Utilities/Key Caps will tell you what keys do what.
If you need a key that isn't there, remap your keyboard.
\_ I've got a Sun Type 6 USB on my Mac - the Alt key is Option,
and the Diamond/Meta key is Apple/Command/Pretzel. -alan-
\_ Any USB keyboard should work fine. Why bother with PS2? -tom
\_ Because *the* PS2 keyboard is one of the best keyboards ever

8/11 Mac OS X users: is there such thing as an "emulation mode" in OS X?
90% of the apps I use have Mac OS X versions. But what's keeping me
from pulling the trigger and buying an PowerBook is that 10%. I have
some legacy windows app that doesn't have OS X version. I'm wondering
if there is emulation software and how reliable is it? Thanks.
\_ are you talking MS Windows or os9? There are both. The
windows emulator costs money and supposedly runs kinda slowly on
in the 12 inch powerbook because the lack of l3 cache, but works
           pretty damn good.

to their software. If this really works, I'll be buying a 17"

              also running.
\_ out of curiosity what apps do you need that osX doesn't have?

A couple that i use almost daily are efax viewer and winfax

wasn't a mac app to do the same thing.
\_ fax files are almost certainly TIFF, which the Mac

7/14 Is there now a proven way to archive HFS(+) volumes on OS X in an
open format? I have Retroexpress but it uses a proprietary format.
\_ Why not just copy the data out to something reasonable?
\_ You have a couple of options:
           1. Use hdiutil to create a dmg and then use ditto to copy
the bits from the original hfs+ vol to the dmg. You can
then use hdiutil to change the image type or compress
the image, etc. While the dmg isn't exactly a open format,
hdiutil allows you to convert dmgs into other open formats
              such as iso9660.
           2. Use Toast to create an img of the volume. Toast can
save imgs in pretty much any open format.
           3. There are extensions to gnu tar/cpio/pax that allow you
to archive the data and rsrc forks of forked hfs(+) files
in a platform independent manner (if you extract the

        it's a common problem.
\_ show it a few videos, and try turning the lights down. maybe
if the mac dresses up like a PC?
\_ I thought this was pretty funny, but you're still a jackass. -op
\_ I can live with that. -Jackass
\_ are you properly reading the instructions? There is a certain
order you connect things the first time around...
\_ apparently it's an existing drive that has worked for awhile
\_ Try kicking it, that sometimes works. Do you really expect
to solve your hardware problem on the motd? Hire a
                 technician.
        \_ Is it by Maxtor?
\_ One known problem is that sometimes fw hd's that are put to
sleep aren't sent the awake command. Only way to fix this is
to shutdown the computer, unplug the drive, replug the drive
           and then reboot.
In some cases, there are problems with bus powered drives
because the computer can't provide sufficient power over the
cable or there are too many devices plugged into the bus.
If the hd is bus powered, try switching to a standalone ps.
Also is the drive detected on the fw bus? You can check this with
Apple System Profiler by clicking on the Devices and Volumes
tab. In MacOSX ASP is /Applications/Utilites/Apple System Profiler.
In OS9 it should be in <Boot Hd>/Utilites/Apple System Profiler
or <Boot Hd>/Applications (Mac OS 9)/Utilites/Apple System Profiler.
If the drive isn't detected, turn it off, wait a few seconds,
turn it on and type CMD-R in the ASP window. If the drive is
detected at this point and it still won't mount, you will need
to use Disk Utility (OS X) or Disk First Aid and/or Drive Setup
(OS 9) to see if there are any problems with the fs on the drive.
If there are problems that Disk Utility or Disk First Aid can't
fix, you probably will need to get a copy of something like
Disk Warrior from Alsoft to fix the problems.

types of diff. fs and os on a mac/ppc system, not counting

\_ I'm not an apple maven but they claim it is.
\_ Depends on the version of OS X. 10.1 and earlier
included some NIS stuff that you could use to
some basic stuff running. 10.2 seems to have
removed/broken some of this stuff. For 10.2
you could use Kerberos or LDAP. Here are some

Note if you are unwilling to play around with this
stuff for a weekend or so, your best bet is to do
                 the following:
                 1. Create local users with the same username, password,
uid and gid on all of the machines. To make this
really easy, start on one of the MacOS X machines
and then create the users in the same order on the
other MacOS X machine (they should all end up with
the same uid/gid). Finally run adduser on your linux
box with the info from MacOS X.
                 2. Figure out which machine is going to serve the home
directories via NFS. The Linux machine is probably
going to be the easiest to configure as a NFS server.
                 3. Configure the other boxes as NFS clients.
Here is some info about MacOS X and NFS:
        http://deaddog.duch.udel.edu/~frey/darwin/archive/DarwinAndNFS.pdf
\_ if what you say is true, then you don't want to spend anymore
time on trying to do this. Maybe you can do it for the Mac but
forget trying to have anything beyond the same local login/password
between Linux/OSX. Don't waste so much of your time.
\_ NFS mounts of home directories on OS X works
pretty well. So you could get the same files
                   on OS X and Linux.
\_ You are correct but miss the point. There is much
more involved. Long-term support and effort is an
issue, not whether NFS works. Think about the files
                      and also more thanthe files.

7/1 What's your impression of the quality of Apple engineering? My
wife asked me this question and the best answer I had was, "well,
it's, uh, complicated." Before OS X came out, Apple had reputation
for innovation but not for delivering products in a timely manner.
Now that OS X is out, it seems that they're being taken a bit more
        seriously.
\_ Apple used to do very interesting R&D, but had a serious case
of the "not-invented-here" syndrome. under OS X, Apple is more
able and more willing to leverage standards. however, they are
also now more focused on Product Development rather than
           pie-in-the-sky research.
so yes, it's complicated. -- long-time Apple user.
so yes, it's complicated. -- long-time Apple loser.
\_ Apple UI was always a step ahead (of microsoft, etc) but their
actual underlying technology has always sucked. Think cooperative
multi tasking. Think finder. Think different.
\_ Engineering? Hardware or software? OS or BIOS or apps? Product
design or board or ASIC? Apple product design is acknowledged to
be tops. Board guys are board guys, but pc motherboards aren't
stressful board designs anyway. I always thought they had pretty
wimpy chip teams (even when I was a chip guy there). I thought
Apple had ok OS types (considering the baggage they had to carry),
but the BIOS was pure black magic, and no one at Apple fully
understood it even 8 years ago.
\_ One more comment... I noticed that the mass unwashed tends to
equate innovation with product design. In that case, Apple
has a reputation for innovation. I wouldn't say that Apple
has a strong reputation for doing exciting engineering in
              other areas.
\_ exciting or quality? IMO there's a big difference.
\_ You know, apple invented pc, gui, mouse, laser printer, ethernet,
combustible computing, pda, risc, the concept of proprietary
software and look&feel, lawsuits, cloning, and now "the most
           advanced OS ever."
\_ Apple did NOT invent the mouse. The mouse was invented at SRI.
I saw the first mouse on display there when I interviewed.
Combustible computing, on the other hand...

5/15 My boss wants me to track what websites a user visits. The user is
smart enough to delete their history every time they log out (tweakui?)
Any recommendations for UNIX/NT software to do this?
\_ You can use a network snooper but I question what will be
accomplish by tracking what websites your own workers visit.
\_ There could be the case of the person visiting inappropriate
sites. However, in this case, the person (a secretary) tells
everyone that she has way too much work to do, but all the other
secretaries say that she just surfs the web all day.
\_ When installing a network snooper, where do you put it? Doesn't
it depend on whether the user is connected to a switch or a hub?
\_ Yes a snooper won't work on a switched lan. A alternate soln.
if you don't want use a caching proxy is to have your fw log
all outbound http and ftp requests and then translate that to
web sites. The problem with this is that you won't be able
to catch request made to services like anonymizer.
\_ Set up a caching proxy (eg. squid) and run it in transparent
mode (your fw/router redirects port 80, 21, etc to the cache)
and turn on max logging. You need to use transparent mode so
that your users can't circumvent the cache and screw up your
           information gathering.
Use perl to grok the cache's log files and generate a list of
urls (or sites) per ip. Now use the dhcp server's log files to
map IP to NIC and therefore to individual client systems and
users (I'm assuming that most of your clients are mac/win boxes
and have only one user). This should give you all the information
           you need and more.
\_ Thanks! We have a cache (Symantec i-gear), but the user wasn't
using it. I'll investigate how to get our router (no firewall)
              to forward requests.
\_ One possible way is the set up the dhcp server to specify
the cache as the default router for the mac in question.
Then you setup the cache to re-route all traffic (except
for http traffic, which it handles) to the real rotuer.
                 \_ currently, we're still on static ip's/routes, but that's
                    something i'll look into
\_ If she is not smart enough to also clear the disk cache, you can go
to the cache directories and look at the content. E.g. on NT,
However, I think a better solution is to just keep track of her
%USERPROFILE%\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ for IE and
           %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Netscape\Users\%USERNAME%\Cache\ for
Netscape; for Unix, ~/.netscape/cache for Netscape. You might not
know which URLs she visited, but at least you can see the content
of the pages. Note that for IE some of the dirs and files are
marked hidden or system, so you have to do "dir /a" to see them.
However, I think the better solution is to just keep track of her
           activity at the proxy server.
\_ Be careful of what you and your boss are doing. Unless it's
in your company policy, you shouldn't do this. Your coworkers
can sue the company for this tactic.
can sue the company for this tactic. If you're going to do this
you better adopt a policy for this and have everyone in the company
be aware of and agreeable to it.
\_ Double check with your company's specific policy, but at
most places the company owns the machine and all files on it
if it is a work machine, and the company is allowed to
              access it whenever it wants.
\_ if your company is going to do that, make sure it's in the
policy. "Company owns everything" is too vague. A good
lawyer will defeat that. You can not do it in way it single
out an individual or in anyway showing bias.
\- if the person you are trying to track is stupid, you can

5/3 Anyone know about 4-pin/6-pin Firewire? I wanna get an iPod, but
        have a Sony Vaio with a 4-pin Firewire port. Should a 4-pin to 6-pin
plug be enough to get this to connect? (In addition to any extra
software I need to get of course.) - rory
\_ Yes. Infact the iPod should come with that adapter.
\_ Really? That'd be great if the adapter was even included,
but my understanding was that all the macs had the 6-pin
ports and Apple not was putting any effort into supporting
non-mac usage of the iPod. url? Thanks.
\_ I thought that the new iBook had the smaller port, but
it turns out I was wrong. Anyway, I asked a friend of
mine here at work who has a iPod and he has been using
it with his vaio at home with just the 4 pin to 6 pin
cable and xpod or some such software.

                        http://www.media4.com/products/xplay
\_ the only difference between 4- and 6-pin firewire is that 6-pin
carries power on the extra two pins. If you have a device that
can be powered externally, then you should be able to go from 6- to
           4- with no problem.

annoying thing about OS X is that it still feels noticeably slower
           compared to Linux or Windows.
\_ Yeah it feels slower, but what I've noticed is that I can
get more coding done while using a OS X system than a linux
system. I don't waste time compiling this that or the other
thing to get my system working. Everything is already there
              and preconfigured properly.
\_ The iBook's design is orders of magnitude ahead of anything in
the PC world. But bang for buck, it can't compare. Depends
what your needs are. If you get one, I'd go for the 12" rather

squishing as much hardware into as small a space as possible
with weight and battery life a secondary issue these days. They
all look like computer "bricks" to me in the store.

mechanism, the little touches like the battery power
indicator lights and the lighted power plug, all point
to real thought being put into design, unlike the rest of
the bricks out there. Dell's idea of "design" is "molded

any RFC that describes it. If a vendor claims it, it's

12/17 This was brought up a few weeks/months ago, but I missed the final
word. So are there any labs remaining in Soda or Cory with unix
machines, or are they all NT now?
\_ 2 labs of solaris sparc (sunray), 1 dying lab of solaris x86 ppro.

The dec's are going linux cluster or E&S-/
\_ oh... so this all isn't too bad at all. I seem to remember a
few months ago, I got the feeling that nearly everything was

\_ certain inst staff are fighting hard to keep windows from
taking over. They've lost Cory hall to The Dark One, but

                 \_ we're definately seeing 6 G4s running osx/os9 in Jan.
\_ Should we wait until MacWorld so that we can get

\_ Real player sucks on every platform other than winblows.
You have this same problem on Solaris and Linux.
\_ what are you talking about? RealPlayer sucks on Windows too.
\_ It seems to work well with Netscape on Windoze.

9/20 What would be an Office-compatible app recommended for an iBook?
        \_ um. Microsoft Office.
           \_ Any other?
              \_ No.
\_ By the way it is dual boot MacOS9 and OS X
\_ Microsoft Office works under both MacOS9 and in the Classic
environment under MacOS X. If you really don't want to use
Office you might try Apple Works, but it is not a complete
           Office replacement --twohey
\_ AppleWorks is a nice if you just need to read docs that
people send you. The main limitation I found was the
lack of support for Word's revision control system.
\_ You should just use Office. If you absolutely refuse to use
           it, then do the following:
             1. Install VPC on OS 9 and OS X
             2. Install RH Linux on your VPC
             3. Install StarOffice under RH Linux running on VPC
             4. Install MacX on OS 9 and XonX or XTools on OS X
Now you can run StarOffice on your mac. Yes its slow as
all get out but at least you are running OpenSource software.
\_ Why not just install Yellow Dog Linux directly on the iBook?

Tailor.app on the NeXT and Macintosh platform...
                \_ Yeah, I used ai, but that's only for Win/Mac. I needed
                   something Unix-based. And I know gimp isn't a vector
based program, but I was still able to make my changes
and save as an .eps file. Thanks, ulysses. But I will
try editing the ps source directly.
\_ do you have to start with eps? if your source can do some

5/6 why are men into different parts of women, such as breasts,
        butt, stomach? advertising? biology?
\_ notice the top of the breasts and the butt are similar in nature.
Also, body shape is important because it signals a woman
is fertile and healthy. Also, the woman has two lips (one
on the face, one lower). Why can lipstick be so alluring? Well,
during heat, the woman's "lower lip" becomes red. I watched some

two wrongs makes a right or anything but this isn't a one
way trip. Women are not virginal innocents just waiting
to be exploited. I know you're not being serious but this
was crying out to be said. Any of you geek boys wonder why
you don't get laid? Because women make judgement calls on
men's appearance, too. Take a shower.

specific: perl -pi -e 's/^M/ /g' FILES doesn't work. What
do i need to type instead of "^M" or actually pressing the
CNTRL and the M key together, so that i can match this char.
Does anyone know what the ascii (alt+3) number is for this
character or where i can find that?
\_ Heh... guess what? "man ascii". "But if you teach a man
                   to fish...."
              \_ perl -pi -e 's/\r\n?/\n/' FILES

4/15 Is the new Powerbook G4 worthwhile compared to PC laptops?
\_ After getting one free from work, couple comments:
They get hotter. Wait for nVidia's GeForce2Go to get
built in, the slot load can jam if you flex the case
too much, and get 256MB of RAM for OS X, otherwise
it can be pooky. Other than those minor quips, best
laptop I've ever owned, and much much better than
           the Vaio it replaced.
\_ Honestly, unless you need the OS X, the Powerbook G4 is,
like the rest of Apple's performance line, overpriced. Now
of course people will argue about that but the fact is
Apple has nothing anywhere near the price/performance of
this Toshiba "gaming" laptop for $2400:
        http://www.csd.toshiba.com/adp/satellite/adp_sat_gaming.html?KNCR=465
That has a Geforce2go, integrated everything and p3-850.
I mean it's the same story for all their hardware. People try
to compare an overpriced Vaio and say "see it's not much more."
And despite being thin and titanium it's not that light.
oh yeah, check out the combo DVD/CDRW on that toshiba. still
impressed with "slot loading (yay!)" on the Apple?
\_ Okay I looked at this, but its $2400 while the apple is
$2599. Now the display on this is only 1024x768 while
apple does 1152x768. Also, there is not integrated Airport
antenna, you need to get one of those ugly Lucent PCMCIA
cards. The toshiba is heavier than the Ti as well. For
$200 less you are getting a considerably crappier machine.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather not cut corners
when spending upwards of $2K. Now if the Toshiba cost
1000-1500 I'd agree that the Ti was overpriced.
\_ The new Titaniums are pretty nice. There are two ways to
look at it. You can look purely at the specs or you can
just pick one up and try it yourself to get a feel of what
it's really like. Compared to a top Viao, it's marginally
more expensive but you get a 15.1" display, a slot load DVD,
and some other nifty features. I don't have one myself but
I've played around with one myself. OS is another issue. You
don't have much of a choice here. Windows is a pile of shit
and Mac is in the middle of a transition between 9 and X. I'm
not too fond of OS9 myself and OS X has some serious response
time issues. Plus it will make that DVD somewhat useless. I'd
           wait a while and see.
\_ The biggest OSX issue is that they built on the wrong unix!
I'd agree if you said FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE or 5.0-CURRENT
                 or even Solaris.
\_ The hardware is very nice (though i've heard of some people
having problems) and stunningly beautiful. I think it comes
\_ It's got the "Power" and the "Sex". It's just 1 inch thick
and 15 inches long and has a smooth surface that will make
              you drool.
\_ Try to avoid drooling on your Ti, it might short the
                 battery/ac switching circuit (a $138 repair, don't ask).
down to a question of OS -- if you want/need Windows, there's
no point. If you don't, it going to be a great machine.
Despite performance complaints about OS X, i'm running it on
           a B&W G3 300Mhz with 192MB RAM and it's performing just fine
for me. I don't use Classic though (when I need classic apps,
i just boot into OS 9).
\_ That's what I thought too. If you're really intent on getting
it running you will convince yourself that it's fast enough.
It's like the placebo - you'll get over the cold if you believe
that the sugar pill is really a drug. But then a coworker came
into my office and noticed how much it lagged. That's when
reality set in for me. I'd wait a while and stick with OS 9.
L1NSUX, esp. on a Laptop. Oh yeah, did I mention it had a working
Apple is has some events planned in the near future -- WWDC in
May and MacWorld in July, if you can you *may* want to hold off
to see what they come out with. Notwithstanding, I'm *very*
           tempted to get a PB G4, and I have a PB G3!
\_ Basically, OS X and it's applications "are not there" yet. I'd
wait for at least six months before fully switching to it. So,
if you can't live with OS 9, don't buy it now ..
\_ I have a Pismo G3 and I love the machine, but everytime I see
Ti G4, I can't help but think how many weeks of pay I'd need to
save up in order to get it. The thing is unbelieveable. Builtin
10/100 Eth, Airport ready, Firewire, USB, VGA/S-Video Out, DVD,
           15.1" wide-screen, 1" thick, etc.
Only the sony's have a comparable form-factor, but they don't
have all of the features built-in, you need one of those ugly port
replicators. Even then, the ethernet is usually PCMCIA, which is
limited by the 16bit bus and usually crappy 3com ethernet chips.
The PB G3/G4 onboard ethernet can push bits out to the tune of 5000-
7000 K/s, much faster than most PCs. Unlike PCs the Aiport card
has an integrate antenna, so you don't have that ugly black thing
sticking out the side of your laptop.
AFAIK, the only PC laptop with a 15.1" screen is a Dell and my
boss used to have it. It weighs like 8 lbs without the DVD and is
something like 3" thick. Its a beast to lug around. The Ti and
even the Pismo are far superior.
The one weakness with the Ti and the Pismo is that they use the
ATI Rage128 8 mb vram, which isn't all that great. I'm waiting
for Apple to release a Ti with GeForce2Go, which is supposted to
be *much* faster and will have 16mb vram. I know that 8 mb vram
vs 16 mb vram is irrelevant when you are running a dispay at
1024x768 (both will do 32bit color no problem), but I'd still
           like 16 mb vram.
With regards to OS X, its a pretty good version of UNIX, with
a reasonably stable and full featured kernel. The VM subsystem
could be a little bit better (a la FreeBSD 5.0-Current) and it
would be nice if the filesystem support was a bit better (only
UFS and HFS+ at this point), but its still *much* better than
Linux, esp. on a Laptop. Oh yeah, did I mention it had a working
GUI environment not some shitty POC like GNOME or KDE and it has
           a plethora of working Browsers.
Well, that's my $0.02. You should probably take this with a grain
of salt, as I'm a big mac fan (got my first mac in 1987 and I've
coded pascal, fortran, matlab, c and c++ for macs).
           \_ twohey, is that you?
                 \_ no. I'm not twohey.
\_ Twohey - he's one of those kiss up brown nosers who asks
a million stupid questions in class that everyone already
knows the answer to just to make himself look smart. I
remember him asking pointless questions during Franklin's
162 lectures. I even heard that students in his discussion
section started attending other sections because he and
his kiss up group kept inundating the TA with moronic
questions that the TA couldn't get anything done during class.
\_ He isn't very bright, no.
\_ the only thing I find lacking with the Apple Ti Laptop is lack
of 112bit key WEP support. Not that this in itself is actually
going to keep anything wireless "secure" but because some of
the various locations in which I would use wireless are setup
to not talk to anything that doesnt do 112bit (aka EECS wireless)
           --jon
\_ Yeah the lack of the "gold" card is annoying. Apple should
hurry up and fix that. Rumors say that this change will roll
out with the 802.11a update later this year.

4/10 I'm looking to set up a small wireless lan in my (GF's) house.
         Recommendations? (cost matters!)
\_ like someone said above..the airport is basically
802.11b gear branded by Apple..it's not Apple specific
we have a setup with an Airport hooked up to a fbsd box
                 to dsl serving wireless dhcp/nat
\_ agreed. We had an Airport LAN set up at my old office.
It worked great. I have a WaveLAN PC card from Lucent
and I was able to easily use it under Windoze and
Linux. From what I understand, the Airport is in fact
not much more than a WaveLAN card plugged into some
486-type machine and packaged nicely. The only issue
I see in doing it yourself is that you probably won't
be able to do it as cheaply.
\_ Are there any wireless systems that offer some kind of
security? Couldn't someone drive by your house and snoop
                 everything on your internal network?
\_ Yes... someone could. Though the Apple Airport appears
to allow access conrol via MAC address, and also supports
encrypting the communication channel. - rory
\_ Neither of which are specific to Airport. By the
way, MAC stands for media access control, something
present in all ethernet devices (including 802.11).
Of course it's used for access control, hence the name.

2/22 Go watch the streaming video presentation of GeForce3 / Doom3. You'll

\_ For only $600 too. Why bother paying rent when you can get a
           GeForce3.
\_ I'm still waiting for nVida to release the mac rom flasher
                 for the 2MX card. I'm stuck with a Rage 128 Pro (?) and I
really want a card with better 2D. Raedon is waaaay to
expensive and the performance is not that much beter than
the 128. The 2MX seems like a great card: low price plus
                 good 2D.
\_ 2d? Any card can do 2d perfectly fine today. 2d is a
done deal. No one buys a new video card for 2d. Any
video card built in the last 18 months has 2d performance
way beyond anything you'll ever need.
\_ Actually the Rage 128 Pro is pretty bad at 2D. It
has a lot of visual artifacts that are simply annoying.
The 2MX is *much* better. I'm unhappy with the 128
because ATI's XClaim 3D VR Plus didn't have these
problems. I was thinking about a Voodoo3, but 3DFX died.

                 \_ A $600 game card is a penis thing.

for their future lineup. "Value Oriented" is always the
bottom end system suitable for maybe running tetris. This
is known as a "euphemism". As a Berkeley student or alum,
you should know all about using nice sounding words to make
lesser people feel better. You're not cheap. You're a
Value Oriented customer. BTW, can I still use the word,
"oriented" without offending the Asian-Americans that read
                   the motd?
\_ Value oriented != cheapos. Some people just don't need
64MB of VRAM. I don't play many games, and the ones that
I do play (old LucasArts games, super puzzle fighter,
Gran Turismo) don't require a $600 video card. The 8 MB
Rage 128 that I have does just fine.
Most of the time I have a browser and a couple of
terminals open. That is all I need to do my work (writing
protocols and such). Occasionally I need to use Word.
The browser, word, terminals look fine even with 4 MB of
                      video ram.
I just don't need to spend $600 for "top of the line".
There are a lot of people like me.
\_ Yeah, and thank god I'm not one of them. You guys
                      a are lame and boring.
\_ You are posting this from work because people like
me wrote the routing and switching protocols that
let your crappy little PEECEE participate on the
internet. Its comments like this that make some
people wonder if we should just keep all the packets
                         to ourselves.
\_ Yeah. They should have the OS automatically
mark the "This computer has a bad ass graphics
card" flag in every IP packet it sends out so
that the routers can automatically adjust the
QoS of traffic originating from no-life gamers.
\_ Well, you've got to use the TOS bits for
something. ;-) (And in case you didn't get
it, I was joking about keeping packets to
                               myself).

2/5 Someone below posted that Linus hates firewire. Is this person serious?
Does anyone here know anything bad about firewire? (everything i have
heard has been very positive). What? (added for those "yes"/"no" S.A.s.)
\_ Well there was that $1 fee apple wanted and then quietly dropped.
Some people complain that the developer docs and the spec are
hard to obtain (okay, its a IEEE standard, but I've still heard
           complaints on line).
And then there's the USB 2.0 crowd that feels that Firewire is
           a pansy mac thing.
           Here are some articles:

           http://slashdot.org/articles/99/09/05/1325210.shtml
BTW, I'm all for firewire. It kicks major arse. If poor little
Linus and his UNIX clone LinSUX don't want to get in on this
technology, he can stick to his crappy peecee. I don't run his
OS nor will I in the near future.

the Linux 2.4 kernel supposedly supports Firewire:

\_ I work at Apple. I've used the damn beta. Trust me. OSX is
not something you want to put on your machine until they're
finally done with it. But at least it's a good start to
replace their kludgy OS9. One of the things I've learned
from working here is that Apple users (like Linux, WinXX,
FreeBSD users) can get extremely passionate and religious
about their particular OS or platform and, as a result,
tend to blabber about how great their OS is. It's
important to think realistically. Every OS sucks in its
own respect and every OS is cool in its own respect (well,
maybe not Windows). But it's all about your own personal
                        \_ Zealot! :P
preference and needs and other people's may be different
than yours. Religious wars won't get you anywhere.
\_ Uh, I'm using OSX on a daily basis. Yeah the beta has
some limitations, but it has emacs, ssh, nfs, bash,
terminal.app, perl, cc, c++, javac and most of what you
would find on a BSD install. I can get almost all my work
           real OS like LinSUX.
done on OSX without any problems.
           real OS like redhat.
           (FreeBSD 3.2 + mods + upgrades) not a rickety clone of a
           real OS like RedHat Linux.
\_ yeah but can' I run my windows games on it? If not its just
              another overpriced paperweight.
\_ Well, yeah. I run some games like Monkey Island and
Myth on my PB G3 using Win98 on Virutal PC. Its okay.
I've tried Tiberian Sun and its also playable. Which
games did you specifically have in mind? Baulders Gate,
Diablo 2, UT, Q3A, Pod Racer, Boob Raider etc have Mac
                    versions.
The Mac can also play most playstation games, even
Japanese ones under VGS. The PC version isn't nearly
as good (and don't tell me about BLEEM, it can't hold
a candle to VGS on a Mac). The games I normally play
are Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (has sound and music
on the Mac unlike PC), Gran Turismo I and II, Driver
and Need For Speed High Stakes. They all run great,
much faster than on a real PSX or even a PIII 700.
\_ I have to say, VGS kicks ass as a playstation
emulator (esp. the cracked version). It simply
buries bleem. With Virtual PC, there's almost
no reason to buy a PC unless you want to
play brainless games like Quake. The mac
may not have as many games as the PC, but
it has the quality few that you'll want to
play and still be useful enough to do
for practical purposes under an OS that
doesn't have to be re-installed every
                               several months....
\_ Uh, Quake I, II and III Arena are
available natively for MacOS, as are
Unreal and Unreal Tournement. There is
full support for OpenGL RAGE (the ATI
stuff) and RAVE (the 3DFX stuff). The
entire line of voodoo cards work just
fine under MacOS. MacOS also has good
support for all those nifty PSX style
USB that the PC gamers envy.

11/22 How many static IPs do you usually get from your DSL service?
Do they use subnetting? Besides host 0 and 255, all the others
assigned IPs can be used for web server, etc.?
\_ Default = 1, but you can order up to 4 from PacBell I believe
(costs extra, of course). I have one but use a gateway router
to share the connection across four computers.
\_ with pacbell, you get one for their basic level of service.
If you order 'enhanced DSL' not only do you get a non-PPPOE

/27 ( 3 bit subnet, 6 useable IP addresses, one used by
your PBI gateway). So you get 5 IP's, for your ~$79/month. -ERic
\_ depends on your ISP. I have firstworld and they give two

\_ But doesn't @home limit your total connections? They asked

see one MAC. Most likely they do bandwidth
shaping, by turning on discard queues after
a certain data rate has been exceeded.

\_ Having been a long time Mac owner (got my SE in 1987 and have
owned +8 mac since) I find that Macs far from rule. I like them
as they are acceptible machines for certain tasks such as word
processing, web browsing, telnet/ssh, terminal emulation and
mp3 playing. I would venture that windows (all flavors) is
useful for the about the same + perhaps gaming (if you want
to waste your time) except that windows is a much less user
friendly environment that hurts your procductivity rather than
friendly environment that hurts your productivity rather than
helps it. For the use the poster specified, digital photography
at home, a mac is ideal as it comes completely equipped with all
the features you would need for this task. If you doing any real
work, for heavens sake get yourself a real computer or at least
              run Linux/*BSD on your PC/Mac.
\_ The windows gui has nothing to do with productivity. He'll
be spending his time in an app. And what *nix app is
available that will do all the digital photo features as well

least twice as fast on the mac and crashes (a little) less
often than on windows. Try the same version of Photoshop on
both a Mac and a PC and you'll see what I mean.
\_ Sorry I was thinking about coding/number crunching.
You are right, a Mac is still the best at graphics and
publishing. In fact my publishers take the word docs that
I send them for my books and convert them into frame or
pagemaker on a mac in order to proof the layouts. They
only used Word because its easy for the editors to read
                    from a pc.
\_ Though I am just getting into it, I plan to have a "digital"
streach of the imagination. Its a decent program but photoshop
darkroom instead the traditional ones. I still own a mac but
I am afraid that with 603e processor it will not be good enough,
and I don't have enough money to burn. Is GIMP really a viable
might be able to sell it and buy a refurb imac or b&w g3
                 though. I'm looking at a $899 b&w (http://www.smalldog.com
You might be able to get $300 to $400 for your pb.
replacement for photoshop for this purpose?
\_ Get a G3 upgrade its ~ $200 and will increase your performance
several fold. You can even run LinuxPPC with GIMP if you so
desire. GIMP is not a good alternative to photoshop by any
strech of the imagination. Its a decent program but photoshop
              its not.
\_ Thanks for the advice. However, I have a Powerbook 3400.
                 \_ Sorry. I don't think that you can upgrade a 3400. You
might be able to sell it and buy a refurb imac or b&w
                    g3 though. I'm looking at a $899 b&w (http://www.smalldog.com
You might be able to get $300 to $400 for your pb so it
wouldn't be too much more and it would be well equiped
to handle digital photography as compared to a PC.
\_ I also would not recommend running LinuxPPC on a pb
                    3400 or any machine with a 603e. The 603e is a really
                    slow processor.
\_ An alternative to upgrading to a new mac is to get a
                    used mac such as a 120 MHz 7600 or a 100 MHz 7500 and
buy a G3 upgrade card for it. The 7600 might be about
                    $300 to $400 with the 7500 being about $200 to $300.
These are PCI boxes so you can get a good video card
                    (voodoo 3), a USB/FireWire card, and a 100MB ethernet
which makes it as powerful as most g3's. You'll save
a couple of hundred dollars over a refurb new mac. If
you do get an older mac, make sure you don't get a
[89][56]00, their mb/case design makes them hard to
                    upgrade. The 7[56]00 has a really nice mb/case that's
                    easy to access and upgrade.

the bloat can be bootstrapped later if the coder/victim

11/1 How secure is the www Java ssh terminal? Can't someone still
intercept packets going through your browser?
\_ The real answer you're looking for is "No, not really". Don't
forget, the Java doesn't run on the site you got it from, it's
like a downloaded program and is run _locally_ in your browser.
The outgoing traffic is encrypted by the ssh code. _However_,
if someone really had it in for you, they could intercept the

2/23 Thanks ERic for the MRTG tip. It works great.
        New Question (Sometimes i think i take advantage of the motd;
other times i'm sure of it.):
Does anyone know of any LPT protocols so that my WIN 9X machines
can print to Mac printers like my NT machines do ? -crebbs
\_ Have them print to an NT server setup as a print server for the
Appletalk printers. Easiest to do if you already have an NT
server that prints to them. I've never bothered trying to find
an Appletalk driver for win9x (which I'm assuming is what you
mean by "Mac printers"). If the printers are tcp/ip, you just
need the right printer driver like any other printer.
\_ sorry, i should have been more clear about what i was doing:
I have been having problems with printing (most notably
with certain applications such as QUARK) and want to take
my *Apple* (woops) printers off the NT server and have
them on a MAC server which will be "cleaner" (for lack of
a better term). Now my NT machines can still print to
those printers via tcp/ip using the LPR protocol which
NT has, but my Windows 9X machines can't 'cause they don't
so i was hoping for some third part LPR protocol so i
don't have to buy pc-maclan or copstalk just to print.
\_ oooooooh.... well you can _still_ print via your NT
server as a sort of printer server/proxy for the 95
boxes. I've done this before. All the lpr/9x things
I've seen all suck and don't come anywhere near the
                   concept of "clean".
\_ How? i can't see the printers from my win9x
machines and couldn't find anything on the winnt FAQ
\_ Setup the printer using LPR on the NT machine,
then share it from the NT machine.
\_ well, you could try moving a printer to a UNIX box,
and running CAP, and see if you stillhave problems
printing from mac. Then you could print from
                   both mac and nt fine.
\_ Yes well, i very often say "we should do this on a
Unix Box" but the unix boxes aren't "mine." I
suppose i could set up a linux machine but, grr,

8/19 what's the deal with Mac claiming that the G3 is 2x faster than
Intel's chips. It even claims to be faster than a PII 400MHz.
Any explainations? Mac's suck by the way...
\_ The greatest factor in determining the speed of a machine is
not necesarilly the processor but how well the operating system
was design and how well it manages memory. Bad OS's tend to
swap things in and out of memory a lot. Most of the time it
isn't the processor that's being overtasked but the i/o system.
Pentiums and G3's are very comparably but the Mac architecture
PII and G3 speeds are very comparable but the Mac architecture
is much cleaner than Intel's. I'm a linux user myself so I opt
for intel machines. Mac's don't really suck. Their OS does.
\_ This claim is mostly specious. So far as I've heard, G3's are
2x faster on one or two things, and comparable or slower in the
rest, and in particular, aren't 2x faster in SPEC. --PeterM
\_ Even PC magazines agree that the G3 is faster than
PII's, if you believe in things like SpecNN. Whether
that will translate to a faster machine is another matter
there is also bus, memory, ... to consider.
But then hey, PowerPC >> x86 long live RISC
\_ About two months ago Ziff-Davis or c|net did a benchmark for
commonly used software between P2's and the notebook G3s. I believe
the results highlighted the dubiousness of Apple's claim. In
particular, the performance of the G3 in floating point intensive
applications like Photoshop was markedly (20-40%?) better in the
P2 than for the lower clock speed G3. The lack of a commonly
known consensus reflects, I feel, the good feelings most
computer journalists and people-in-the-know have towards Apple
and their efforts. That's what I remember.
\_ The G3 might be a faster chip than the PII, but since MacOS
is mostly still written in 68K code, the user experience and
app benchmarks lag because half the time they're in emulation.
\_ Last I checked, Apple's claims are based on Byte's benchmark
tests for integer operations. In these tests, which
don't necessarily reflect real-life speeds, the G3 did
outperform the Intel chips by a wide margin.
\_ And since the benchmark is distributed as source
code, the compiler can seriously affect the results.
Apple has a page on their own website showing a
PowerMac 8500/180 scoring from 3.75 to 10.46 on the
integer test depending on the compiler.
\_ What good is a powerful processor if you dont have well written
software to run on it? Whichever platform runs the software
YOU want better is the better platform.
\_ More importantly, Mac OS can't do multithreading or pre-emptive
multitasking at this moment so their claim is misleading.
\_ BZZZT! MacOS has provided multi-threading for years.
(Available as an add-on to System 7.1, included in 7.5
& later versions). And lack of multi-[threading/tasking]
doesn't make their performance claims any more or less
bogus - CPU speed is CPU speed - how you use it is a
                   different matter.
                \_ Neither can Winblows 2000.
\_Nothing says that you have to run Mac OS on a Mac--check
out LinuxPPC or MK Linux. (And what marketing claims--
                  from any company--AREN'T misleading?)
\_ Not so. Apple refuses to release specs for their G3
based machines so non-MacOS operating systems can't
be ported to G3 systems (which is unfortunate because
BeOS was about to take off).
\_ Funny, I'm running MkLinux on my G3. linuxppc also
runs on it. BeOS is worthless. -tom
\_ is your G3 an upgrade card by any chance?
                           \_ no. -tom

for word. elm can't handle it. -adr
        \_ If it's a word file, the MIME type shouldn't be octet-stream.
Get the bozo who sent it to you to fix his mail program.
\_ Read the message closely : elm means unix usually and word
will be thought of as octet-stream . Uncle Bill does make
          UNIX ports of Word.
\_ Bullshit. Word is for Windows and Mac only.
\_ No, Word should be thought of as application/msword. That's
what MIME types are FOR. octet-stream would be something like
             a raw binary.
\_ Really? I thought only WordPerfect has UNIX versions. -- yuen
\_ Whether or not there's a Unix version, the MIME type is
                   application/msword.
