I've got some stuff that has good file names, some with good ID3s info,

7/14 I bought several Intel GigE nics and one of them has a
bad mac addr (all ff's). dmesg shows the card as detected,
and proc/pci lists it, but ifconfig doesn't show an eth*
entry for it. Does anyone know how I can set the mac addr
so that I can use the card? (I'm using RH 9, but I can
just as easily stick the card in a WinXP, FreeBSD or
OpenBSD box). The card has a 82540 chip if that is of
any use. tia.

7/14 Any ideas on why Mozilla/Firefox/etc is so slow on OSX? Even Camino,
"designed from the ground up for OSX," is really bad.

Safari, but once it is loaded I can't really tell any difference.

7/8 I have a big C++ program that uses tons of memory. What tools would
for some reason I read that as mercury _/
be useful to figure out where that memory is going? What I'm
imagining is something that works like Quantify, except instead of
time for function & time for function + descendants, I want memory
for structure & memory for structure + descendants. Context would also
be useful (i.e. the call stack when the structure was first created).
Any thoughts? Currently platform-agnostic.

anymore. Franz's Allegro (originated from CS dept at Cal) is
either free or costs a fortune, depending on the license. Also
available is openmcl, which is the only free one that has an
(experimental) cocoa interface (never tried it). gcl also works
now but isn't it still CLtl1? clisp is of course very slow.
You probably want to try sbcl and openmcl first. Somehow it
seems you get better selection for scheme (bigloo) or even
prolog (SWI or YAP).
\_ xsb is a good prolog implementation also, they have tabling
and other goodies. Bigloo is cool. SWI is slow. -- ilyas

does window comes with a free development package that is ready to
use and fully functional, like xcode/project builder for os x or

GUI building: netbeans (java), Qt (c++; your app must be GPL)
Other: Python has some good toolkit support as well

on cygwin? MinGW + Msys might be a good alternative.

have file extensions so is there any UNIX utility (or PC utility) that
will differentiate between word and excel files so that I can
programmatically add the .xls and .doc extensions? "file" simply says

1. Use hdiutil to create a dmg and then use ditto to copy
the bits from the original hfs+ vol to the dmg. You can
then use hdiutil to change the image type or compress
the image, etc. While the dmg isn't exactly a open format,
hdiutil allows you to convert dmgs into other open formats
such as iso9660.
2. Use Toast to create an img of the volume. Toast can
save imgs in pretty much any open format.
3. There are extensions to gnu tar/cpio/pax that allow you
to archive the data and rsrc forks of forked hfs(+) files
in a platform independent manner (if you extract the
archive using a non-hfs(+) aware version of tar forked
files show up as two separate files, the data fork shows
up as the file and the rsrc fork shows up as a separate
file (one of: ._<fname>, ./AppleDouble/<fname>, fname.rsrc)

sleep aren't sent the awake command. Only way to fix this is
to shutdown the computer, unplug the drive, replug the drive
and then reboot.
In some cases, there are problems with bus powered drives
because the computer can't provide sufficient power over the
cable or there are too many devices plugged into the bus.
If the hd is bus powered, try switching to a standalone ps.
Also is the drive detected on the fw bus? You can check this with
Apple System Profiler by clicking on the Devices and Volumes
tab. In MacOSX ASP is /Applications/Utilites/Apple System Profiler.
In OS9 it should be in <Boot Hd>/Utilites/Apple System Profiler
or <Boot Hd>/Applications (Mac OS 9)/Utilites/Apple System Profiler.
If the drive isn't detected, turn it off, wait a few seconds,
turn it on and type CMD-R in the ASP window. If the drive is
detected at this point and it still won't mount, you will need
to use Disk Utility (OS X) or Disk First Aid and/or Drive Setup
(OS 9) to see if there are any problems with the fs on the drive.
If there are problems that Disk Utility or Disk First Aid can't
fix, you probably will need to get a copy of something like
Disk Warrior from Alsoft to fix the problems. |

Note if you are unwilling to play around with this
stuff for a weekend or so, your best bet is to do
the following:
1. Create local users with the same username, password,
uid and gid on all of the machines. To make this
really easy, start on one of the MacOS X machines
and then create the users in the same order on the
other MacOS X machine (they should all end up with
the same uid/gid). Finally run adduser on your linux
box with the info from MacOS X.
2. Figure out which machine is going to serve the home
directories via NFS. The Linux machine is probably
going to be the easiest to configure as a NFS server.
3. Configure the other boxes as NFS clients.

if you don't want use a caching proxy is to have your fw log
all outbound http and ftp requests and then translate that to
web sites. The problem with this is that you won't be able
to catch request made to services like anonymizer.
\_ Set up a caching proxy (eg. squid) and run it in transparent
mode (your fw/router redirects port 80, 21, etc to the cache)
and turn on max logging. You need to use transparent mode so
that your users can't circumvent the cache and screw up your
information gathering.
Use perl to grok the cache's log files and generate a list of
urls (or sites) per ip. Now use the dhcp server's log files to
map IP to NIC and therefore to individual client systems and
users (I'm assuming that most of your clients are mac/win boxes
and have only one user). This should give you all the information
you need and more.

activity at the proxy server.

linecards and let a central route processor send messages

$2599. Now the display on this is only 1024x768 while
apple does 1152x768. Also, there is not integrated Airport
antenna, you need to get one of those ugly Lucent PCMCIA
cards. The toshiba is heavier than the Ti as well. For
$200 less you are getting a considerably crappier machine.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather not cut corners
when spending upwards of $2K. Now if the Toshiba cost
1000-1500 I'd agree that the Ti was overpriced.
\_ The new Titaniums are pretty nice. There are two ways to
look at it. You can look purely at the specs or you can
just pick one up and try it yourself to get a feel of what
it's really like. Compared to a top Viao, it's marginally
more expensive but you get a 15.1" display, a slot load DVD,
and some other nifty features. I don't have one myself but
I've played around with one myself. OS is another issue. You
don't have much of a choice here. Windows is a pile of shit
and Mac is in the middle of a transition between 9 and X. I'm
not too fond of OS9 myself and OS X has some serious response
time issues. Plus it will make that DVD somewhat useless. I'd
wait a while and see.

\_ I have a Pismo G3 and I love the machine, but everytime I see
Ti G4, I can't help but think how many weeks of pay I'd need to
save up in order to get it. The thing is unbelieveable. Builtin
10/100 Eth, Airport ready, Firewire, USB, VGA/S-Video Out, DVD,
15.1" wide-screen, 1" thick, etc.
Only the sony's have a comparable form-factor, but they don't
have all of the features built-in, you need one of those ugly port
replicators. Even then, the ethernet is usually PCMCIA, which is
limited by the 16bit bus and usually crappy 3com ethernet chips.
The PB G3/G4 onboard ethernet can push bits out to the tune of 5000-
7000 K/s, much faster than most PCs. Unlike PCs the Aiport card
has an integrate antenna, so you don't have that ugly black thing
sticking out the side of your laptop.
AFAIK, the only PC laptop with a 15.1" screen is a Dell and my
boss used to have it. It weighs like 8 lbs without the DVD and is
something like 3" thick. Its a beast to lug around. The Ti and
even the Pismo are far superior.
The one weakness with the Ti and the Pismo is that they use the
ATI Rage128 8 mb vram, which isn't all that great. I'm waiting
for Apple to release a Ti with GeForce2Go, which is supposted to
be *much* faster and will have 16mb vram. I know that 8 mb vram
vs 16 mb vram is irrelevant when you are running a dispay at
1024x768 (both will do 32bit color no problem), but I'd still
like 16 mb vram.
With regards to OS X, its a pretty good version of UNIX, with
a reasonably stable and full featured kernel. The VM subsystem
could be a little bit better (a la FreeBSD 5.0-Current) and it
would be nice if the filesystem support was a bit better (only
UFS and HFS+ at this point), but its still *much* better than
Linux, esp. on a Laptop. Oh yeah, did I mention it had a working
GUI environment not some shitty POC like GNOME or KDE and it has
a plethora of working Browsers.
Well, that's my $0.02. You should probably take this with a grain
of salt, as I'm a big mac fan (got my first mac in 1987 and I've
coded pascal, fortran, matlab, c and c++ for macs).

I see in doing it yourself is that you probably won't
be able to do it as cheaply.

I've tried Tiberian Sun and its also playable. Which

versions.
The Mac can also play most playstation games, even
Japanese ones under VGS. The PC version isn't nearly
as good (and don't tell me about BLEEM, it can't hold
a candle to VGS on a Mac). The games I normally play
are Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (has sound and music
on the Mac unlike PC), Gran Turismo I and II, Driver
and Need For Speed High Stakes. They all run great,
much faster than on a real PSX or even a PIII 700.
\_ I have to say, VGS kicks ass as a playstation
emulator (esp. the cracked version). It simply
buries bleem. With Virtual PC, there's almost
no reason to buy a PC unless you want to
play brainless games like Quake. The mac
may not have as many games as the PC, but

for practical purposes under an OS that

available natively for MacOS, as are
Unreal and Unreal Tournement. There is
full support for OpenGL RAGE (the ATI
stuff) and RAVE (the 3DFX stuff). The
entire line of voodoo cards work just
fine under MacOS. MacOS also has good
support for all those nifty PSX style
USB that the PC gamers envy.
My brother plays UT on his G3 466 +
Voodoo 3 with exceptional frame rates;
enough to kick the FAtlon 1 GIG and PIII
players arses every time.
The only mainstream PC game without a
mac version is Half-Life (and I'm pissed
about that, since the "beta" rocked).

at home, a mac is ideal as it comes completely equipped with all
the features you would need for this task. If you doing any real
work, for heavens sake get yourself a real computer or at least
run Linux/*BSD on your PC/Mac.

$300 to $400 with the 7500 being about $200 to $300.
These are PCI boxes so you can get a good video card
(voodoo 3), a USB/FireWire card, and a 100MB ethernet
which makes it as powerful as most g3's. You'll save
a couple of hundred dollars over a refurb new mac. If
you do get an older mac, make sure you don't get a
[89][56]00, their mb/case design makes them hard to
upgrade. The 7[56]00 has a really nice mb/case that's
easy to access and upgrade.

\_ You want to do all this on a Mackie Db8. It _is_ a PC, complete
with ethernet, Winblowz, etc. Connect it down to a Mac running
PowerTools. You want to connect to the machine via MIDI, store
all your mixes, as well as music onto the Mac. Record session
onto ADAT XT20. Then play the entire thing through to a sound
file and burn onto CD. This makes for the cleanest sound. The
Db8 avoids extraneous hardware like reverb, gating, etc. as
everything is digital. You will need 2 Db8's however if you
want true 32 track editing (64 doen to 32). And the ADAT remote
controller helps as well (when running 2-4 decks, it syncs them
all to the same command set). No one goes to this level with a
PC.

Does anyone know of any LPT protocols so that my WIN 9X machines
can print to Mac printers like my NT machines do ? -crebbs
\_ Have them print to an NT server setup as a print server for the
Appletalk printers. Easiest to do if you already have an NT
server that prints to them. I've never bothered trying to find
an Appletalk driver for win9x (which I'm assuming is what you
mean by "Mac printers"). If the printers are tcp/ip, you just
need the right printer driver like any other printer.

I have been having problems with printing (most notably
with certain applications such as QUARK) and want to take
my *Apple* (woops) printers off the NT server and have
them on a MAC server which will be "cleaner" (for lack of
a better term). Now my NT machines can still print to
those printers via tcp/ip using the LPR protocol which
NT has, but my Windows 9X machines can't 'cause they don't
so i was hoping for some third part LPR protocol so i
don't have to buy pc-maclan or copstalk just to print.

server as a sort of printer server/proxy for the 95
boxes. I've done this before. All the lpr/9x things
I've seen all suck and don't come anywhere near the
concept of "clean".

10/06 Here's a question for some genius guru out there. I'm on a WAN
using 3-com super-stack II net biulder 221 to connect an ethernet
to a 56.6 connection supplied by the phone company and sent to
server land. Now when i connect a p.c. with a given i.p. add.,
net mask, etc. it seems to work fine, but a MAC with the same
info can only send data of less than 1.5K. I.e. when packet
splitting is involved, it fails. Any ideas of what might be
the problem?? (using mac tcp/ip and open transport versions 1.2)

Intel's chips. It even claims to be faster than a PII 400MHz.

\_ The greatest factor in determining the speed of a machine is
not necesarilly the processor but how well the operating system
was design and how well it manages memory. Bad OS's tend to
swap things in and out of memory a lot. Most of the time it
isn't the processor that's being overtasked but the i/o system.
Pentiums and G3's are very comparably but the Mac architecture
PII and G3 speeds are very comparable but the Mac architecture
is much cleaner than Intel's. I'm a linux user myself so I opt
for intel machines. Mac's don't really suck. Their OS does.

\_ About two months ago Ziff-Davis or c|net did a benchmark for
commonly used software between P2's and the notebook G3s. I believe
the results highlighted the dubiousness of Apple's claim. In
particular, the performance of the G3 in floating point intensive
applications like Photoshop was markedly (20-40%?) better in the
P2 than for the lower clock speed G3. The lack of a commonly
known consensus reflects, I feel, the good feelings most
computer journalists and people-in-the-know have towards Apple
and their efforts. That's what I remember.
\_ The G3 might be a faster chip than the PII, but since MacOS
is mostly still written in 68K code, the user experience and
app benchmarks lag because half the time they're in emulation.
\_ Last I checked, Apple's claims are based on Byte's benchmark
tests for integer operations. In these tests, which
don't necessarily reflect real-life speeds, the G3 did
outperform the Intel chips by a wide margin.
\_ And since the benchmark is distributed as source
code, the compiler can seriously affect the results.
Apple has a page on their own website showing a
PowerMac 8500/180 scoring from 3.75 to 10.46 on the
integer test depending on the compiler.

YOU want better is the better platform.
\_ More importantly, Mac OS can't do multithreading or pre-emptive
multitasking at this moment so their claim is misleading.

& later versions). And lack of multi-[threading/tasking]
doesn't make their performance claims any more or less
bogus - CPU speed is CPU speed - how you use it is a

at keeping functional units fed for a given memory bandwidth,
as a vector processor can pipeline memory much more efficiently
than a cache based machine. Unfortunately, the vector leinght
on this proposed ISA is WAY WAY WAY too small for this to work.
