9/6 Probably old news to some of you, but what do you all think of the
"Street Performer Protocol"?
http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue4_6/kelsey
\_ I'd probably never go for it.
\_ I think the ideas sounds interesting in parts, but I don't
see how it could work as the primary mechanism for funding of
copyrighted works. An author who wishes to publish his first
novel will not be able to get donations, so he needs someone
else (i.e., a publishing house) to decide he is worth it,
market the book and put it in stores. That publishing house
needs to have control of the copyright to at least some extent,
because they publish and promote a lot of books by first-time
authors and most of them don't make money, so to fund their
operations they need to make their money from the few successful
books.
The idea might work for Stephen King. -tom
\_ Stephen King tried it and it failed him if I recall.
\_ King tried putting his books up for download by serial,
with small payments, but without any escrow. So very
few people actually paid for them because they were all
available on the the file-swapping services for free.
If he said "OK I want to make $100K off this book" and
waited until there was $100K in escrow, the file-swapping
problem would be mitigated. -tom
\_ It's overly optomistic about a performer's skill. One of the
greatest resource of a publishing house is it's editors. First
novels are hardly ever insta-classics without the vicious advice
of an editor. Plotholes, meandering writing, lack of character,
inaccurate facts, etc. sinks books even before they are finished.
A good editor will fix that. Plus, a partially written book does
nobody any good. Authors should create a finished product or they
will find themselves lost like a potter trying to glaze a wet
piece of clay. |

4/18 I'm thinking about getting a TV Tuner/Video input card for my Mac,
specifically this one (AlchemyDVR ~ $120):
http://miglia.com/products/video/alchemytvdvr/index.html
Does anyone have experience w/ this card (or alternatives)? I'm mostly
looking to convert VHS/8mm tapes into DVDs.
\_ If you want to make DVDs, then you eventually have to encode
to mpeg-2. The original instructions, as I recall, recommended
that you either capture in mpeg-4 or MJPEG. MJPEG takes huge
amounts of disk space. I have the alchemy, but I also have the
eyetv200. The eyetv has better software, encodes using mpeg-2,
and the built-in editor is pretty good. EyeTV also works well
with toast and popcorn since the founder of roxio also founded
the eyetv company. The alchemytv is pretty decent for the bucks,
but if you have the bucks, the eyetv is way better.
\_ So my plan was to play the tape and then use iMovie to
capture and edit the video and then use iDVD to burn a
DVD. Is the software that comes w/ EyeTV better/easier
than this solution?
\_ I haven't used those programs to do what you are trying to
do. However, I was under the impression that Apple's tools
work with DV. If that's correct, then DV takes up a lot of
space which is one thing to consider. I did hear that the
iMovie editor is kinda nice. It may be better than the eyetv
editor, especially if you can cut to an individual frame,
and do final cut pro style edits. The nice thing about
importing directly into eyetv is that the file is in mpeg-2
(smaller file sizes), and the quality presets are pretty
good (highest quality is about 3GB per hour, standard
about 2GB per hour, etc.). You will probably have nicer
DVDs using iDVD (nice themes, compared to toasting them).
I've been using eyetv to import videos, cut with FCP, and
then using DVDSP3 to build a DVD on the hard drive. Then
use popcorn to burn the disk if I go over 4.39GB.
\_ I think you are right re Apple's tools and DV however
I'm not that worried about disk space b/c I have a 250
gb drive w/ 100 gb free and I'm going to pick up another
one when fry's has them on sale. I'll think about the
eyeTV but for what I'm trying to do I'm not sure the
extra $100 or more is really worth it. Thanks. |

\_ i log fstat and diff on motd.public. it's usually not hard to

strictly text changes, no graphics/format alterations, so I'd
prefer something not too expensive but effective. Cad-Kas's

\_ Well, Acrobat (not Reader) is obviously the best choice. Fair

\_ agree with above. Acrobat version 6 is a blowed beast, though,
so you are being warned. Moreover, not all PDF files are editable
even if you have all the tools you needed. No, I am not talking
about digital signature what not. I am talking about when PDF

3/7 Note to self: Debian cleans out /var/run on reboot. This is a bad
thing if you place Cyrus imapd's config directory under /var/run.
\_ linux = sux0rz!
\_ heh, it also cleans out /tmp -- which sucks when you work on
some stuff on there, and then you kill your system =[
\_ you should never work on anything important in /tmp as
many systems use a memory fs for /tmp which will always
be cleared on reboot.
\_ yea... I know, bad habit... but speaking of tmp...
screwdriver: /var/tmp -> /tmp
Don't important things like editor recovery files end up
in /var/tmp?
\_ noone ever said screwdriver was run well.
\_ Seeing as I was bit on the ass on /var/run, it would
be unfair of me to think you foolish for making the
same mistake with /tmp, but I kind of took /tmp not
being preserved across reboots for granted. And to
whoever asked if editor recovery files end up in
/var/tmp, you shouldn't need editor recovery files
after a clean reboot. Do you think it is reasonable
\_ Um.. Multiuser system, anyone?
\_ Um, if you leave your *unsaved* edits to your PhD

to expect editor recovery files to *reliably* survive
a catastrophic system crash? If you think it is
reasonable, could you kindly explain how it is
possible, and cite an example of an OS that does
this? -op
\_ Yeah, put the editor recovery files in each user's
home directory. It's not rocket science.
\_ This will not preserve the files in the event of a
catastrophic system crash. Modern filesystems
buffer writes in memory for performance. -dans
\_ If you're going to play *that* game then no
modern OS is 'safe'.
\_ Yes it is reasonable and most OSes do this. Examples
are Linux, HP-UX, and Solaris.
\_ the whole *point* of editor recovery files is to
recover work lost in a catastrophic system crash. -tom
\_ Someone take root away from the OP immediately!
\_ no, learning by screwing up is the best way. im
certain op will never make that or similar
mistakes on any OS again.
\_ Actually, no tom. The whole point of editor
recovery files is to recover work lost in a
catastrophic *editor* crash. In a catastrophic
system crash, you cannot *reliably* reconstruct the
state before the crash so you cannot *reliably*
recover. In order for an editor to be able to
reliably recover from a catastrophic system crash,
it would need to write its recovery log to an
ACID-compliant store. I am not aware of any editor
that does this, nor am I aware of any widely
available OS that features an ACID compliant
filesystem. Perhaps veritas makes something like
this, but such a filesystem would be of limited use
since its performance would be awful. -op
\_ are you a complete moron? /var/tmp has been
around for longer than ACID or Veritas have been.
It's not meant to be some kind of bank transaction
rollback log, it's meant to be "oh shit, I was
working on something important, can I recover
any of it?" -tom

\_ I should have said that I want a VISUAL editor that can be embedded.
\_ list the restrictions you want... if you just want to, e.g., limit

\_ Suppose my program asks the user to type/edit some documents at

9/18 Tab=4 or Tab=8 in coding standard -- which is more popular?
\_ I use tab=2, tolerate tab=4, and hate pricks who use tab=8 (for
high level languages. assembly is different)
\_ I use tab=8, but I mostly code assembly. -- yuen
\_ Tab width correlates strongly with line ending, if that helps.
Unix=8; PC/Mac=4
\_ Tab = 8, and I want to throttle and maim every single human
being that has contributed to four-space tabs in code editors.
\_ problem with tab = 8, is if you stick with the no more
\_ That's why your code should have spaces inserted when you
hit tab.
than 80 character lines, then the code can start looking
quite constricted.
\_ tab 8 is too spread apart, you can't scan the lines well
\_ When you hit tab in code, the editor should insert 4
spaces. When you hit tab in text, then insert 8 spaces
or an actual tab that's as wide as 8 spaces.
\_ I typically use 4, but only because that's standard for Windoze.
What I really hate are the fuck ups that use a tab size of 3. -phale

8/23 What format are man pages stored in and is there some front-end
editor for creating one? also, is there some kind of man page to
Tex or postscript converter?
\_ format: troff on most Unixes, sgml on Solaris (though troff is
\_ roff. that's why it's roff mode and not troff mode.
still supported/used for third-party man pages)
editor: emacs roff mode
conversion to ps: yes, just use normal *roff tools
(troff/psroff/groff/etc.)
\_ Also, something like "cat foo.man.1 | nroff -man | more" will
work. This doesn't answer your question in any way, but I
wanted to stick that in there. :-)
\_ YAUUOC: USE 'nroff -name <file> | more' instead of abusing
your poor cat. |

6/19 perhaps we should all sign posts by what editor we use, and everyone
can see what kind of editor users post the most useful stuff.

3/20 grr! we need a check out procedure for the motd.public.
\_ Current one works fine for me.
\_ What current one? (though i just wrote my own script to
do what i need, testing now)
\_ motdedit is for fags. real men just know when it's safe to
write the motd.
\_ "which motdedit"
\_ thanks, but that doesn't keep someone who has opened
up a version before me but saves after me from un-
intentionaly deleting my changes. Does it?
\_ Your editor doesn't tell you that the file has changed?
\_ the file doesn't change until afterwards.
\_ no, thickhead, the issue is that while
YOU are editing it, someone else changes it.
Then your braindead editor saves over with
YOUR changes, obliterating other peoples.
Real editors warn about this. |

1/4 bpatch (binary editor) installed in /usr/local/bin. Man page
is in /usr/local/man. Use at your own risk - fetched from
comp.sources.unix. If someone has a updated Curses package
for dynix then a better binary editor can be installed --jules.

1/31 Where is the file that has the 'more /etc/motd'? I can't seem to
find that line in the .login or .cshrc. Also, could someone repost
the line to show only the changes in the motd since last read? Thx
\_ You MUST be joking!
\_ You add the line 'more /etc/motd' to your .login file. Here's
how: type "pico .login" (or any other editor you like) and then
add that line on.
\- That's "teco .login", to you son.
\_ Don't you mean "femto .login" ? |
