12/10 Let me ask again: How do I post on ValleyWag? -got juicy stuff to tell
\_ Go to the valleywag website. Note the IM address
of the editor, Owen. I think its 'imthevalleywag'.
Introduce yourself. Start IM'ing him stupid shit. The end.
\_ Ok I just wanted to confirm the protocol before I make a
complete fool of myself. I'd like to rant on how a
company that people used to die to work for has now become
an unwieldy dinasaur filled with layers and layers of
management and processes, is now very consensus driven, and
is afraid to innovate from within. Does this sound familiar
to anyone who has been in a SV company too long? -op
              \_ hello dans!
\_ Um, hello. I'm not the pp. Slide is in SF, not SV, and
                    we're still kicking ass. -dans
\_ This sounds like the natural evolution of many
                 organizations, not just in SV.
\_ Or you could just sign up for an account and start posting to
           the "comments" section.

2/23 Pnews - get error
"/bin/cat: /etc/news/organization: No such file or directory"
        any ideas?
\_ I've created that file, and Pnews seems to be working now. --mconst
        other error:
          \_ /usr/bin/Pnews: line 448: /usr/local/bin/jove: No such file or
              directory
              \_ Ok, I added a symlink /usr/local/bin/jove. Could you
please let me know if that works for you? --mconst
                 \_ works.. thanks :)
\_ Why would that be necessary? Is that path hardcoded
somewhere or did he have that as his EDITOR or VISUAL?
(if he did it's stupid not to get it from PATH)
\_ It's not hardcoded; I assume the original poster just
had it as their $EDITOR. But there's no harm in having
                       /usr/local/bin/jove as a symlink, and it'll probably
fix similar problems for other people. --mconst

11/6 Poll: How are you avoiding kchang's identifier on
        http://csua.com/24/?incr=1 ? I'll start:
        scp: .
        cp, vi, cp: .
it's wrong most of the time (at least for my posts), so why care?: ..
Didn't know kchange was back: .

"WARNING: Random aliases shown are solely for the purpose of
entertainment. Real logins, as well as randomized names really
           didn't post these messages."
\_ I always launch my editor (Vim) when I login to soda and load the
motd into the buffer. When I write to the motd, I load my comment
into a buffer, reload the motd and then write the change. Since I'm
always running the editor, kchang nearly always flags me as a a
possibility. Thus my actual comments are lost in the noise. -emarkp

9/6 Probably old news to some of you, but what do you all think of the
        "Street Performer Protocol"?
        http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue4_6/kelsey
\_ I'd probably never go for it.
\_ I think the ideas sounds interesting in parts, but I don't
see how it could work as the primary mechanism for funding of
copyrighted works. An author who wishes to publish his first
novel will not be able to get donations, so he needs someone
else (i.e., a publishing house) to decide he is worth it,
market the book and put it in stores. That publishing house
needs to have control of the copyright to at least some extent,
because they publish and promote a lot of books by first-time
authors and most of them don't make money, so to fund their
operations they need to make their money from the few successful
           books.
The idea might work for Stephen King. -tom
\_ Stephen King tried it and it failed him if I recall.
\_ King tried putting his books up for download by serial,
with small payments, but without any escrow. So very
few people actually paid for them because they were all
available on the the file-swapping services for free.
If he said "OK I want to make $100K off this book" and
waited until there was $100K in escrow, the file-swapping
                 problem would be mitigated. -tom
\_ It's overly optomistic about a performer's skill. One of the
greatest resource of a publishing house is it's editors. First
novels are hardly ever insta-classics without the vicious advice
of an editor. Plotholes, meandering writing, lack of character,
inaccurate facts, etc. sinks books even before they are finished.
A good editor will fix that. Plus, a partially written book does
nobody any good. Authors should create a finished product or they
will find themselves lost like a potter trying to glaze a wet
           piece of clay.

4/18 I'm thinking about getting a TV Tuner/Video input card for my Mac,
specifically this one (AlchemyDVR ~ $120):
        http://miglia.com/products/video/alchemytvdvr/index.html
Does anyone have experience w/ this card (or alternatives)? I'm mostly
looking to convert VHS/8mm tapes into DVDs.
\_ If you want to make DVDs, then you eventually have to encode
to mpeg-2. The original instructions, as I recall, recommended
that you either capture in mpeg-4 or MJPEG. MJPEG takes huge
amounts of disk space. I have the alchemy, but I also have the
eyetv200. The eyetv has better software, encodes using mpeg-2,
and the built-in editor is pretty good. EyeTV also works well
with toast and popcorn since the founder of roxio also founded
the eyetv company. The alchemytv is pretty decent for the bucks,
but if you have the bucks, the eyetv is way better.
\_ So my plan was to play the tape and then use iMovie to
capture and edit the video and then use iDVD to burn a
DVD. Is the software that comes w/ EyeTV better/easier
              than this solution?
\_ I haven't used those programs to do what you are trying to
do. However, I was under the impression that Apple's tools
work with DV. If that's correct, then DV takes up a lot of
space which is one thing to consider. I did hear that the
iMovie editor is kinda nice. It may be better than the eyetv
editor, especially if you can cut to an individual frame,
and do final cut pro style edits. The nice thing about
importing directly into eyetv is that the file is in mpeg-2
(smaller file sizes), and the quality presets are pretty
good (highest quality is about 3GB per hour, standard
about 2GB per hour, etc.). You will probably have nicer
DVDs using iDVD (nice themes, compared to toasting them).
I've been using eyetv to import videos, cut with FCP, and
then using DVDSP3 to build a DVD on the hard drive. Then
use popcorn to burn the disk if I go over 4.39GB.
\_ I think you are right re Apple's tools and DV however
                    I'm not that worried about disk space b/c I have a 250
gb drive w/ 100 gb free and I'm going to pick up another
one when fry's has them on sale. I'll think about the
eyeTV but for what I'm trying to do I'm not sure the
extra $100 or more is really worth it. Thanks.

7/29 Someone is using a motd-editor that replaces tabs with spaces. While
I think spaceing is better than tabbing, you're munging up motd
        comparing and archiving scripts.
\_ comparing scripts should ignore whitespace
\_ they should but it wasn't that hard for me to convert to
retaining tabs. there are tabs in the file and the editor
              should retain them.

           \_ I propose waner's account be suspended.
\_ second that. tell us how did you figure this out. by
knowing who did the last motd destruction/censoring, may be
we could stop motd censoring altogether.
\_ If you squish tom you'll end most motd censorship.
\_ Maybe keep one window tracking changes, and another tracking
people's idle or last login. This would only work for hosings
in the middle of the night.
\_ there is no middle of the night. people post from all
                     time zones.
\_ Some time zones are more active than others. There is
a middle of the night for a machine where most of the
                        users are in California.
\_ I'm going to measure activity as a function of time
over a few 24 hour periods and see if you're right.
i'll get back to you on this.
                           \_ I haven't measured it scientifically but I know
motd activity is primarily M-F/8-6. I'd like to
see what you measure and what the numbers look
                              like when you're done.
\_ i log fstat and diff on motd.public. it's usually not hard to
figure out who's modifying the file with what, particularly if
              the person does it repeatedly.
\_ except that some (many?) editors don't keep a file open while
they're editing. so the window during which they have the
file open (i.e., reading or writing) is rather small.
        \_ he's a stalker too? do tell.
\_ There was a world-readable text file in his home directory which
in obsessive detail chronicled his every interaction with this
particular girl over the past year or two. Someone posted the
filename to the motd. Then everyone was creeped out, then waner
              made the file non-readable.
\_ It was a great file. I've never had such a deep look into the
mind of a psychotic/stalker before. Did anyone figure out who
the girl is and warn her?

3/17 I need to edit a PDF file, what's the best program to use? It's
strictly text changes, no graphics/format alterations, so I'd
prefer something not too expensive but effective. Cad-Kas's
PDF editor didn't work too well, and a few others can't handle
text when it's flipped 90 degrees.
\_ Well, Acrobat (not Reader) is obviously the best choice. Fair
warning, though, pdf isn't really made for editing.
\_ agree with above. Acrobat version 6 is a blowed beast, though,
so you are being warned. Moreover, not all PDF files are editable
even if you have all the tools you needed. No, I am not talking
about digital signature what not. I am talking about when PDF
files are being made, there are number of things author can do
which make PDF file editing difficult. First, he/she can convert
everything into bitmap, in that case, you are out of luck.
\_ Acrobat OCR is pretty darn good, actually.
Secondly, if he/she embedded certain fonts inside the document,
and if you don't have that font, I am not sure how would that turn
           out. -kngharv

3/7 Note to self: Debian cleans out /var/run on reboot. This is a bad
thing if you place Cyrus imapd's config directory under /var/run.
        \_ linux = sux0rz!
\_ heh, it also cleans out /tmp -- which sucks when you work on
some stuff on there, and then you kill your system =[
\_ you should never work on anything important in /tmp as
many systems use a memory fs for /tmp which will always
              be cleared on reboot.
\_ yea... I know, bad habit... but speaking of tmp...
                 screwdriver: /var/tmp -> /tmp
Don't important things like editor recovery files end up
                 in /var/tmp?
\_ noone ever said screwdriver was run well.
\_ Seeing as I was bit on the ass on /var/run, it would
be unfair of me to think you foolish for making the
same mistake with /tmp, but I kind of took /tmp not
being preserved across reboots for granted. And to
whoever asked if editor recovery files end up in
/var/tmp, you shouldn't need editor recovery files
after a clean reboot. Do you think it is reasonable
                    \_ Um.. Multiuser system, anyone?
\_ Um, if you leave your *unsaved* edits to your PhD
thesis open for hours at a time on a system that
someone else may remotely reboot, you get what you
                          deserve. -op
to expect editor recovery files to *reliably* survive
a catastrophic system crash? If you think it is
reasonable, could you kindly explain how it is
possible, and cite an example of an OS that does
                    this? -op
\_ Yeah, put the editor recovery files in each user's
home directory. It's not rocket science.
\_ This will not preserve the files in the event of a
                          catastrophic system crash. Modern filesystems
buffer writes in memory for performance. -dans
\_ If you're going to play *that* game then no
                             modern OS is 'safe'.
\_ Yes it is reasonable and most OSes do this. Examples
                       are Linux, HP-UX, and Solaris.
\_ the whole *point* of editor recovery files is to
recover work lost in a catastrophic system crash. -tom
\_ Someone take root away from the OP immediately!
\_ no, learning by screwing up is the best way. im
certain op will never make that or similar
                             mistakes on any OS again.
\_ Actually, no tom. The whole point of editor
recovery files is to recover work lost in a
catastrophic *editor* crash. In a catastrophic
system crash, you cannot *reliably* reconstruct the
state before the crash so you cannot *reliably*
recover. In order for an editor to be able to
reliably recover from a catastrophic system crash,
it would need to write its recovery log to an
ACID-compliant store. I am not aware of any editor
that does this, nor am I aware of any widely

9/3 What editor can be controlled by another program? What I want is to
have my program launch, say ED, and the user edit a given file. Only
a subset of ED's command is avaialbe to the user. The rest of the
functionality is controlled by the parent program, so that ED is
        acting like an embedded editor.

some stage, and I don't want to write an embedded editor just
for that. The user is not allowed to edit any other file or
change buffer (as in emacs). And the parent program can change
the file/buffer without relaunching the editor. I guess the

1/4 What brand/model of UPS comes with driver/software for Linux? Which
one is affordable and reliable? Thanks.

1/4 bpatch (binary editor) installed in /usr/local/bin. Man page
is in /usr/local/man. Use at your own risk - fetched from
comp.sources.unix. If someone has a updated Curses package
for dynix then a better binary editor can be installed --jules.

1/31 Where is the file that has the 'more /etc/motd'? I can't seem to
find that line in the .login or .cshrc. Also, could someone repost
the line to show only the changes in the motd since last read? Thx
        \_ You MUST be joking!
\_ You add the line 'more /etc/motd' to your .login file. Here's
how: type "pico .login" (or any other editor you like) and then
           add that line on.
\- That's "teco .login", to you son.
              \_ Don't you mean "femto .login" ?
