12/21 I was laid off and started filing for EDD for my weekly pay. I just got a job. Is there a form I need to file, or do I just stop filing out EDD to get my weekly pay? As a side note, how do they actually know I am working or not? \_ You just stop filing and they stop paying; you don't need to do anything else. I don't know the internals of how they do things, but it seems pretty obvious that if you started having state income taxes withheld from your paychecks while continuing to draw EDD benefits, they should be able to notice that pretty easily. |

However, they are only guaranteed their $100K. \_ Is FDIC guarantee per account or per "entity" \_ Per account \_ Per depositor, although accounts held by different entities may count separately. For example, if you have a single account and a revocable trust then you may be eligible for more insurance (in this case $100K per beneficiary of the trust in addition to $100K for the single account). If you have, say, four checking accounts in your own name at a bank then you are insured for only $100K total. \_ More example: if you and you wife have a single joint account, by default you and your wife are covered for $100K each. It gets complicated if you and your wife own the account at some ratio other than 50%-50%. account, you and your wife are covered for $100K each. Say there was $200K in the account. If there isn't a well defined standard I leave it alone. Making huge diffs in your source control system really sucks. \_ Agreed. Generally this means lining up my modifications with whatever the indent is and putting my pointer *'s left or right. \_ Seconded. When I add code to existing code, I try to conform to the existing code' formatting as long as one exists, even if it's lousy. When I create new code, I conform to my own formatting standard. I refrain from re-formatting existing code unless I'm making big changes to it. --- yuen \_ From our coding guidelines doc at work: "A single file should have a single formatting style (i.e., when in Rome...). 8/3 dear motd LGPL expert: I'm using an open source LGPL library at work. I need to make some minor changes to the source code of the library to get something working, and am not sure exactly what I need to do to legally use the modified library in a commercial application. My vague understanding says that I need to make the source code changes "available" (even though the change I made is really simple), but what does this mean? (what exactly do I do to make them available?) \_ Why don't you just submit your bug fix/enhancement to the project team? \_ You are going to distribute the modified library with your commercial product, yes? You can: a. Distribute the source code to the library too. b. Wait for someone to ask you for the source code to the modified library. c. Submit your changes back to the library maintainers, and then it's not an issue. \_ I've been in this spot before and we shipped the src to the library along with the patch containing our changes. We also send the changes to the maintainers, but it took some time for the changes to be incorporated and for us to pick up the new version so shipping the src and the patch covered us until that time. |

7/29 Has anybody deployed a "checksumming/file integrity infrastructure" across say ~100 *nix machines? Any recommendations for particular tools? Tripwire is garbage, and for various reasons I am thinking about moving away from veracity, which I am been using for a while. Considering looking at osiris and samhain. Would prefer something lean and old-school unixish (like one binary and one config file) rather than one of these "entrprise software system" type things with a large footprint and a lot of chrome. Tnx. \_ Not on 100 machines, but we ran fcheck for a while. It was really resource intensive. I moved to some one-or-two binaries C one ..i think the name started w/ an "a" It worked pretty well. --dbushong \- re: resouce intensiveness ... if the resources are 1. human time 2. cpu 3. disk io, i think you can decrease #2 by using fletcher checksum instead of an expensive one like md5. not much you can do about disk io ... so a lot of it comes down to #1 ... it's key to have a config system flexible enough to not go crazy if somebody say nfs mounts a 300gig parition without factoring that into the configruation. as with intrusion detection systems in general, resourse and ability to minimize false alarms is what dictates success or failure in a practical sense. for me, chekcing the OS on a sun takes about 6-10 min. \_ The a____ program I switched to used less compute resources because it: a) used a weaker checksum b) had internal optimized checksumming code (rather than forking "md5sum" each time) Both fcheck and it specified certain directories to scan and didn't traverse mount points. --dbushong \_ There was a discussion of this on one of my security lists a while ago--I have forwarded your question, and will forward what comes up if you tell me who you are. 2/25 Hello video experts, I've been using DVD2AVI to convert VOBs to AVI and WAV and then combining them using TMPGEnc, which I thought was free. Today, it says "MPEG-2 expires after 30 days due to licensing issues, please buy this product." What the hell? What are other alternatives out there? \_ mpeg2 is not free. \_ TMPGEnc provides free MPEG1 encoding, but MPEG2 is not free. You need to pay for TMPGEnc Plus. Both TMPGEnc Plus and CCE Basic are around $50. Incidentally, using DVD2AVI to generate AVI files isn't a great idea. Also, if your goal is to go DVD->DVD, then why not use DVDShrink? \_ Actually my goal is simply DVD(mpeg2) to VCD(mpeg1), I got mixed up so it's cool. By the way it's quite tedious to split the DVD into AVI/WAV then combining them, is there an easier way? \_ You're not actually supposed to create an AVI with dvd2avi (despite its name; they've now renamed it to get people to to stop using that misfeature), since that's just going to be a collosal waste of HDD space. The usual way is to save the project file (.d2v) and then open that (usually using AviSynth, but I think the current version of TMPGEnc can open it directly). --jameslin |

Oh wait, now it's semester break. Been out of school for too long. \_ I am guessing. an intruction cache stores previous instructions, whereas a target branch buffer fetches the instruction which the branch prediciton logic anticipate. (thus the target branch) \_ An instruction cache also stores next instructions if, say, the cache only reads from memory 16 bytes at a time and the instructions are less than 16 bytes each. \_ a branch target buffer is a place to store metadata about recently used branches, e.g. profiling statistics to inform branch prediction logic. it's analogus to a TLB in that it holds the scratch state for hardware logic meant to accelerate the typical case execution beyond the worst case one. |

12/4 It was the damn humans who ruined Cal's Rose Bowl. Machines were right! \_ We got screwed by some of the computers too. For instance, ASU's loss to Arizona lowered our scores on some of the computers. \_ What makes you believe that? \_ The humans have us ranker higher than Texas. \_ Some of the computer rankings take into account the records of your opponents. ASU was the best team we beat. \_ Yes, but we also played Arizona, so them beating ASU made their record better. I think the effect on our Strength of Schedule rating is a wash. \_ Althouth the Arizona win probably didn't hurt us much directly, it did boost Utah a considerable bit in many of the computer polls. That is because Utah played Arizona (as one of their few non-conference opponents). And in many of the polls, Utah was between Cal and Texas, thus lowering our ranking by one slot, and thus making our computer score about .04 less, which cost us the Rose Bowl. -phale \_ The humans have us ranked higher than Texas. \_ Overall, we are ranked ahead of Texas in the human vote. However, our #4 human ranking became weaker on Sunday - weak enough for the computer vote to move Texas into #4 overall. The human/computer rankings are not purely discrete. \_ Yeah, that was true last week, too, when we were still #4 overall. What happened was that our #4 human ranking became a little weaker on Sunday. \_ That guy on the motd banking on Cal vs. Wisconsin sure came out well! \_ yea, wisconsin was exposed as a fake, and I didn't quite understood the BCS rules. I thought Cal would go as long as USC goes to championshp game and Cal is second in the conference. I still think Cal should go to the Rosebowl. IIRC, Cal has won all the bowl games it went to since the early 90s (copper, aloha, citrus, insight, etc.?) \_ We lost the Aloha Bowl. -tom (I was there) \_ For the last two weeks all 6 BCS computer rankings have ranked Texas ahead of Cal. \_ BCS or electoral college system, which should go first? \_ if electoral college goes, so do the southern states \_ I was watching it on ESPN I think. The announcers were really excited about Cal, talking up about how great they were. Cal did it's usual "slow-start" first-half, and the announcers stopped talking about how great Cal was. Suddenly, Southern Miss was the team that was completing all its passes and scored on the flea- flicker. There went our Rose Bowl right there. \_ The ESPN broadcast pissed me off. They showed the _TEXAS_ fans more often than they did the Cal fans. WTF?! \_ When Texas has the momentum, they show Texas fans. Anyways, c'mon, people are like: UC Berkeley? Football?? |

10/1 So I downloaded the gdi scan tool from: http://isc.sans.org/gdiscan.php and it detected a problematic gdiplus.dll for a 3rd party app. How do I fix it? \_ Bug the 3rd-party developer to fix it, or be very careful about viewing untrusted content with that App. If *any* program can view a 'questionable' JPEG, then the JPEG is not infected. All infected JPEGS are corrupt. \_ Well FYI it's Paint Shop Pro 9. Buyer beware. \_ To give an example of programs where you would least likely expect GDI+ to be used, I know that QuickBooks actually uses it, and they haven't replaced the GDIPLUS.DLL yet. In fact, they knew absolutely NOTHING about this security issue, and I had to IM a former co-worker there to tell him to get that shit patched ASAP. I'm glad I got the hell out of there. -phale \_ I was never too much of a l33t QuickBooks user, but where would you be opening some arbitrary jpegs with it? Designing a form layout? \_ Yah, designing a form layout for an invoice or something. But you can also download a form layout that somebody else has created, which will cause QB to open up any JPEGs that have been embedded inside of that form layout datafile. Granted, it isn't too likely this would happen, but I've found out the hard way never to underestimate the stupid things people do with their computers. -phale \_ But if the JPEGS are viruses, no benign user could embed them in the layout file (because it would crash). You'd need someone to construct a Quickbooks layout file virus. \_ Actually, no, you could create the file without QB opening up the JPEG during creation. It just does a simple copy into another datafile. But when the new file is opened by another user, the JPEG gets opened up. Short answer is that is possible, and I actually tried it already on one of my windoze 2000 boxes. I think I will leave it at that, as I've probably said way too much already. -phale \_ What the hell is Microsoft Ink, and why does it have an unpatched .dll on my machine? \_ Who is general failure, and why is he reading my disk!? \_ It's all the fault of General Protection. |

Thanks. \_ While I haven't seen SC-103, a ficticious business name declaration is generally for when you are starting a business. \_ After 6 month of filing and Holiday Inn applying for appeals, the week before the final court day, a representative from Holiday Inn called me and issued a company apology, the full credit back, as well as 1 free Holiday Inn night good for 1 year. I sued because I requested for non-smoking room only and when I got there, they still gave me the only room they had-- smoking room. The small claims sues because I have severe asthma and due to medical conditions I could not get a smoking room. The Holiday Inn person said he was very sorry, understands the medical condition, and persuaded me to drop the lawsuit. I dropped it, but I still think they're dickheads. I bet that had it not been for the ADA disability act or something, the lawsuit would have proceeded. |

7/2 When I redirect to person B an email person A sent to me, and there is some delivery error, will the notification be sent to A instead of me? In general, is there any scenario in which person A get notified that his mail has been redirected? \_ yea, when person B tells person A... if you mean by machine... if you forward the message, no. not sure if you bounce. don't think so though. \_ It might happen if you put A in the "reply-to" field. \_ person B is actually another account of mine. I just want to shield my other account from person A. And yes I do mean bounce (redirect) instead of forward. bounce (redirect) instead of forward. When I looked at the header at account B, I cannot discern anything about my 1st account. So how would the mail agent inform me instead of person A of any trouble with the redirection? \_ if you redirect it, the bounce goes back to person A. -tom |

6/21 I've never had a cell phone. My parents have Verizon Wireless and they live in another state. Is it possible for me to add myself as another line to their account and get a number with a local area code and just pay them $20 a month? Is this a bad idea? \_ Do area codes even matter anymore now? Most people I know just call me with their cell phones (or company phone) and which area code you're in doesn't make much of a difference to them. \_ I might be possible now. I had a similar situation last year. AT&T said that they were working on multi-area code family plans but that they didn't have one available yet. I had to buy a separate plan ~ $30/mo. \_ How about this: Get on their plan with a number in their area code then tell the cell phone company you're moving and want a new phone number. Only wrinkle is if your company uses different frequencies in different regions and your phone only covers one band. |

6/16 To those of you more familar with the software world than international trade in theory and practice, some of the arguments made by the anti-aumping people are self-serving comments analogous to these ... "people are being raped by paying less ... when will they realize they would be better off with out more expensive product" ... McBride calls these arguments tantamount to a death sentence for a multibillion-dollar software industry that has helped propel the United States to economic and technological leadership in the digital era. In March, he sent a letter to every member of Congress warning that Linux threatens the country's economic well-being and even its national security. "Each Open Source installation displaces or pre-empts a sale of proprietary, licensable and copyright-protected software," he said in his letter. "This means fewer jobs, less software revenue and reduced incentives for software companies to innovate." [http://csua.org/u/7s9] Also to the fellow who raised the example of memory chips, find me a case. I am not saying there has never been such a case [I dont know] but I would bet nobody has ever won a dumping case. --psb |

6/8 Need recommendation for web hosting that provides large disk space at reasonable prices. I'm currently with verio and they offer 200 megs of web/mail space for $24.95. I just signed up and cancelled http://speakeasy.net when I found out that their 1 gig quota is really for web storage and not for email or general purpose. speakeasy's mail quota is 15 megs. Are there other reliable medium/large companies? Thanks. \_ You do mean 24.95/month, right? I got in on a free offer from http://1and1.com, they have seemed decent, although they still have separation between mail and web space (50MB for the pop mail accounts) \_ Word of warning on 1and1. A friend and I are using them for hosting several sites, and they are really good as far as that goes. However, they seem to have developed a reputation for harboring spammers, and mail from 1and1 accounts is bounced by a LOT of mail daemons. |

5/10 I hope responses don't go too much out of control, but I'll risk it. How much do you think Bill Gates himself had to do with the way MS currently runs as a business (practices like unfair strategies, software bundling, buggy code, non-original ideas, etc.)? \_ I think the policies are set 100% from the top. 5/1 mehlhaff, why did you stop your motd archive? \_ Why don't you just run your own? It isn't magic. \_ I think that binary flood was designed to break motd archive. \_ Checking the file type and length before archiving wouldn't be a difficult addition for those who care. |

4/14 Do the order of records in /etc/passwd correspond to the order accounts were added? This would make sense given that lwall is the first user account listed. \- you used to be able to go by uid number until the moron/fascist revolution --psb revolutio --psb \_ So that makes psb the 37th extant user account added? And I'm afraid I don't know what the moron/fascist revolution was. |

2/20 What's the deal with this "optimized" or "accelerated" dial-ups? Do they just cache stuff behind your back? Compress things? Just a bunch of crap? What's the deal? \_ They compress parts of the download that are easily compressible, such as HTML and email text. I think some of them may also give a lower QoS to images, so the 'meat' of webpages loads faster. \_ Some also compress (or re-compress) images. E.g., really low-quality JPEG. |
