Do all drives have these kind of issues and I only see the ones from HP because they are diligent about reporting/fixing these issues? Or do they suck? (It's not actually their drives so...) Also, do I really need to bring down my production infrastructure and fix all this or is "rare" sufficiently rare (or sufficiently harmless) that I can ignore it? -advice needed. tnx. \_ no raid? can't update 1 at a time? |

on lenses. I imagine you can use the 1972 Nikkor 6mm f/2.8

itself!) or the 1990 Nikkor 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8 (not a
reflex) on a Nikon D body in manual mode. But other than
that, I heard that Canon usually gives a better bang for

in quantitiative stats. e.g. it is really annoying
when some setting you change a lot is on a two deep
menu rather than on a dedicated dial ... i would gladly
trade some megapixels for that interface change.

11/02 A one megapixel picture on screen looks pretty good. Yet if you print
the same picture on a sheet of paper that's the same size as the screen
image, it looks bad regardless of what inkjet/laser printer you use.
Why is there a difference?
\_ That's a good question. Assuming a proper photo print out
(real developed photo or dye-sublimation printing), I can
think of a couple of possibilities. One is that a monitor
is an active display device (it glows at you) whereas a
printed media is a passive medium (it only reflects
light). That probably gives the monitor a perceived
advantage. Another is that printed medium usually has
higher resolution. Since the dots are smaller, we may look
closer, expecting more. If the printed medium's pixels are
made the same size as that of a monitor output, it may
reduce the perceived difference. It's kind of like
displaying DVD-resolution video using HDTV-resolution
display device. Unless the scaling algorithm is very good,
it gives worse perceived crispness to the image than when
the same image is displayed using matching resolution
display device.

typicaly max out at 300 dpis.

And while your video card may produce 16 million colors,
that's almost certainly more than your monitor can
display, especially most LCD panels. Cheap inkjet
printers can produce fine-looking prints from files
of sufficient resolution; 1 megapixel is simply not
enough resolution. You could sent one to a pro developer
and it still would look fairly crappy. Again, it looks
good on screen because we are willing to accept extremely
low-resolution images on screen (TV is only 320x240). -tom

to 6000 pgs if you use the toner saver mode). The printer has

PCL emulation. It is also very fast and quiet when sleeping.

processor, which is much slower and consumes more
power. It also doesn't have the near-instant
startup time of the later cameras. Between 350D
and 400D, 400D loses dedicated LCD display and
each pixel on the sensor is smaller (2 more

300D to 350D was a big jump, but 350D to 400D isn't
as obvious.

must be some way to turn it on from linux, how?

you can install the OpenIPMI driver and use ipmitool to turn on
the indicator light in Linux. If you set up ipmi properly you

\_ I just upgraded from an iPaq 3835 to an Axim x51v. The wireless is
pretty nice with the x51v, but there are tons of problems with the
ROM for the Axim. The site http://Aximsite.com has a bunch of posts in the
forums about it. The x51v has a full VGA screen (480x640) and it's
beautiful. The problems I've had with the ROM mostly boil down to
bluetooth at this point (which I've not seriously tried yet). If
you are looking for deals, follow http://slickdeals.net (I got the axim for
$300 direct from Dell). I was disappointed with the iPaq in that
updates for the unit dropped off pretty quickly. Even with the
problems, I'd recommend the Axim over the iPaq. -emarkp

8/22 I have a Canon S500 and I love it. My friend just bought a Canon
SD550 and I love it even more, except for the fact that the GUI
changed a lot. For example, I can't find the menu where it allows
you to do panoramic stitch. Also, I can't seem to get it to do
long exposures (more than 1 sec). Has anyone noticed the drastic
decrease of options in the new SD550?

6/22 Anyone have experience with the HP 2550L color laser printer? It's on
sale @ CostCo for $360, and I'm considering it. The criticisms I've
seen are that: 1) it's loud, and 2) it has no proper paper tray. I can
live with both of those problems.
\_ What are you intending to do with your color? Color laser
printers don't print true color, they dither, so if you're looking
to print photographs or other detailed images, the quality will
be better on a good inkjet. If you're just printing bar graphs
the color laser is OK. -tom

but they're still dithering. Dye sublimation are the only
ones that don't.

Most Win apps are not like that. In addition, the selling point
of Tablet PC is not the original PC itself, but rather, the
ability to draw freehand (take notes, highlight EXISTING
documents, read eBooks), and character recognition. The latter
is especially useful for East Asian languages. I use it to
write Chinese all the time. I still find it slow and hard to
type Chinese, and the char recognition program is amazingly
accurate to use. Is the Tablet PC for everyone? Absolutely NOT.
It tailers to a niche market, and will most likely never be
main stream. But I think it's cool -happy Tablet PC user

4/5 For those laser printers with multiple interfaces (ethernet, usb,
parallel), can you connect different computers to different
interfaces at the same time? I am interested in one of those
multifunction printers. I want the printer on ethernet for
multiple computers, but also want to use scan and fax functions
(which only works over usb) on one of the computers.
\_ It probably depends on the printer. I have a Dell 3100cn
and this works fine. I also tried it on my Lexmark Inkjet
which had both USB and Parallel, and the manual said NOT
to connect to both, and it worked. You would sometimes have
to power cycle the printer. -ax

server? That way you'll also have tidier print queues, etc. If

server", and sort by "Best Rating". The problem with generic
USB->Ethernet print server hardware is that you can't do any custom
stuff over Ethernet (e.g., monitor ink levels, most manual duplex).

anything else, and they're cheaper to configure. All PC vendors
use commodity hardware and re-use RMA parts, so there isn't much

\_ Dell uses nonstandard power supplies. If your psu fries and
you want to replace it you're out of luck unless you hunt down
a $20 conversion cable or spend a lot on a "real" dell PSU.
The most standard "PC" out of the bunch is probably emachines,
although the PSU is a micro they are still relatively easily
obtained. Everything else (including the MB if you are so
inclined) can easily be swapped out of these el cheapo machines.
If you want to replace parts yourself consider
getting a white box system from Fry's. -wiliamc
\_ "cheaper to configure": this is not always true. There are also
a couple other factors one might consider. One being that Dell
has some proprietary differences for no good reason so e.g. you
can't just go buy a power supply if the Dell one dies, you have
to get a Dell-specific one. Another factor is others may have
a design (case etc.) you like more. Another factor could be that
Dell is Intel-only and this entails a price markup for the same
performance.
\_ Typically, Dell charges about half what the other major
vendors do for changing RAM, disk, video cards, etc, from
the base models. I've never seen an example of things
going the other way. Worrying about Intel vs. AMD is
strictly for the slashdot crowd, to 99% of users there's

\_ HP was class actioned for this awhile ago; I've heard that for some
models they'll send you new rollers for free. There's also
http://fixyourownprinter.com which charge ~$30 for the rollers and
a fairly helpful .avi on a CD that shows you how to do the
replacement. I ponied up to fix my 5L and I'm pretty happy.

on the first page that has some graphics and stops printing the
entire file. What could cause this to happen? Does postscript levels

printing the PS file directly and the same thing happens.

10/25 Hello how do we print to a win98 se box from a linux redhat 6.1
box?
\_ The 98 box needs an lpd. Last time I looked they exist but all
suck. A better way is to put the printer on the net directly
rather than use a 'printer host'. The 98 printer host idea is
silly because it's not doing anything but spooling files which
any *nix or windows machine can do just fine. You lose out on
some queue control this way, but it's easier for a small office.
If you're in a larger office, what are you using a 98 box for a
printer host anyway?

as a network win98/nt printer.

a couple, and they run great.

1/29 Anybody know if there are "ultra-slim" notebooks with a large 15"
display? I've looked at ultra lights from Sony and Dell but they all
have like 11" displays. I want an ultra-slim with a large display.
\_ if you consider 1.4 inches thick "ultra-slim" then the HP Omnibook
4100 is for you. The display is 14.1 inches. There is nothing
that slim with a 15" screen as far as I know. |

3/16 I'm looking to buy a new printer. While it will be used for mostly
black-and-white text, it needs to have color capability. I'd like
to spend no more than about $500. Looking at HP 890Ce, Epson
Stylus 800, Canon BJC-4300, and Lexmark 5700. Any other
suggestions or recommendations? --dim
\_ I bought an HP560c a few years ago. Works fine for text and
does color on normal paper. Normal paper color looks washed
out in photos and images, but colored text and charts are fine
with normal paper. I never put the more expensive paper in it.
If you get this used or a later model in the same family, it
should do the trick. Pretty cheap too.

Generally color reaches a plateau in quality unless you want
to spend > $1000. I've personally used an Epson Stylus 600
