10/3 Hey tom, can you tell us why Canon is better than Nikon? I'm shopping and can't decide. \_ I think Canon and Nikon are comparable. -tom \_ #f spec for spec, price-value-wise, lense selection, Canon beats Nikon hands down. \- if you dont have an investment in nikon, buy canon. if price truly is not object, then there might be some debatable issues depending on what you want. but actually what you should do is fix you budget, which will determine a small range of bodies and you should them compare specific models not brands. especially if you are in the $1k - $1.5k range ... if you are never going to be looking at +$1k lenses, who cares about those. --nikon owner \_ You can rent lenses easily at pro shops. Even pros do it all the time. \_ Another reason might be that you have very specific needs on lenses. I imagine you can use the 1972 Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 fisheye (angle of view = 220 degrees -- seeing behind itself!) or the 1990 Nikkor 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8 (not a reflex) on a Nikon D body in manual mode. But other than that, I heard that Canon usually gives a better bang for the buck. -- owner of Nikon FM2n, N70, D80. \- yes, that is why i wrote "if you dont have an investment in nikon". and renting is not a reasonable option if you are travelling for a month ... and those are the pix i really care about. i still like the "feel" of nikons more than canon, but it comes at a high price and isnt directly contributing to the quality of the results. when you get down to comparing specific models, sometimes user inerface matters more than trivial diffs in quantitiative stats. e.g. it is really annoying when some setting you change a lot is on a two deep menu rather than on a dedicated dial ... i would gladly trade some megapixels for that interface change. --http://home.lbl.gov:8080/~psb/PSB_MISC/PSB_N1-fb.jpg \_ UI is very subjective. Hey what kind of lenses have you invested in? Do you have a bunch of EF-S/DX lenses that'll get obsolete in 5 years? \_ wedding photographers rent equipments all the time \- the economics of photography change dramatically if you can justify it as a business expence. |

People are weird. \_ 1) didnt know we had a motd printer guy. 2) what is weird about abusing the office printer? it's commonplace. \_ I think this is more about someone dumb enough to leave their herpes info on a public printer at work. \_ Why? Did you know the majority of adult Americans have oral herpes? A lot have genital herpes but no symptoms. It is dirt common. \_ It's still idiotic to print out private health information on the office printer. -dans \_ Having oral herpes isn't private. You probably have it. 11/02 A one megapixel picture on screen looks pretty good. Yet if you print the same picture on a sheet of paper that's the same size as the screen image, it looks bad regardless of what inkjet/laser printer you use. Why is there a difference? \_ That's a good question. Assuming a proper photo print out (real developed photo or dye-sublimation printing), I can think of a couple of possibilities. One is that a monitor is an active display device (it glows at you) whereas a printed media is a passive medium (it only reflects light). That probably gives the monitor a perceived advantage. Another is that printed medium usually has higher resolution. Since the dots are smaller, we may look closer, expecting more. If the printed medium's pixels are made the same size as that of a monitor output, it may reduce the perceived difference. It's kind of like displaying DVD-resolution video using HDTV-resolution display device. Unless the scaling algorithm is very good, it gives worse perceived crispness to the image than when the same image is displayed using matching resolution display device. \_ Because we're used to seeing crappy-looking images on screen. -tom \_ I'm not sure about 1mp, but photo paper always made shit nice. \_ Two factors. 1. surface of paper is not smooth. 2. the resolution of printer is very limited. \_ Look, if you don't know the answer, just keep your mouth shut, OK? Printer resolution is *much higher* than screen resolution. Your screen runs at maybe 100dpi; cheap printers print at 600dpi, good ones higher than that. -tom \_ yeah, how may color can a printer produce per pixel again? we are talking about EFFECTIVE pixel here. If all you have is a 16-color EGA screen, you will need a quite a bit DPI to make the picture look half-way decent. *FURTHER* many of the printer has a much lower mechanical resolution than optical resolution. And the mechanical resolution is typicaly max out at 300 dpis. \_ which is still three times better than your screen. And while your video card may produce 16 million colors, that's almost certainly more than your monitor can display, especially most LCD panels. Cheap inkjet printers can produce fine-looking prints from files of sufficient resolution; 1 megapixel is simply not enough resolution. You could sent one to a pro developer and it still would look fairly crappy. Again, it looks good on screen because we are willing to accept extremely low-resolution images on screen (TV is only 320x240). -tom \_ Actually many (most?) LCD are 8-bit now (16M colors). They may only produce like 73% of the color space but some get to high 90s. Either way it is much better than a cheap inkjet printer which may have like 16 colors. \_ whoa there tom. _n_ ______ _/o \/ \@ _________ O_ pig )=( tom__I_ \______ \___/\______/ \ \ \_____ I II II II II \_ On your monitor, each pixel is RGB 888 or 16M possible colors per pixel. Printers have far less color precision. They can only produce those colors by dithering etc. with more dots. produce those colors by dithering etc. with more dots. There should be some scale to print at that would look around the same though. Dye-sublimation printers can do the full color range. \_ Is this a home print job or you used one of the various online services? \_ Actually, I tried both an Epson Stylus Photo 1200 inkjet at home, and various 600dpi mid-range color laser printers at work. -- OP |

10/10 Any reccomendations for a cheap monochrome laser printer? Network not needed. A decent-size starter toner cartridge would be nice. \_ I got a used HP 2200D off craigslist for $250 or so. It's great, it does postscript and prints on both sides of the paper, which is nice. Speed is not too bad. -phr \_ I recently bought a Samsung 3051n from Newegg for $200 ($250 - $50 mir). It comes w/ a 4000 pg cartridge (which can last up to 6000 pgs if you use the toner saver mode). The printer has has ethernet, parallel and USB 2.0. It also features PS3 and PCL emulation. It is also very fast and quiet when sleeping. \_ I bought a cheap samsung laser printer about 4 years ago. The paper feeding mechanism died after about a year. It sure was cheap though. \_ While I accept that at the $200 price point this printer will not be nearly as reliable as a HP 8000 series (or similar), OP asked for a "cheap monochrome laser printer." I think that the 3051n easily satisfies his criteria. Personally, I think the printer will last at least 3 years b/c 3 years is the warranty period. \_ The newegg page says less then 39 dBA at idle. 39dBa is fairly loud, IMHO. I remember my dad's old HP 4L was truly silent at idle. \_ That's probably not sleeping but idle. If you don't use it for a minute or so it goes into sleep mode where it has to warm up for a few seconds if you want to print. Sleep mode is truely silent. \_ That is correct. It is somewhat loud in idle (warmed up but not printing). But, it is completely silent when it goes to sleep. It takes a few seconds to wake from sleep and start printing. \_ OK, I know what PostScript is, but why should I care if a printer is a PS printer? Doesn't just about everything support PCL anyway? -OP \_ Some PDFs won't print properly on a PCL only printer. I'm not sure why. If you mostly print from Word rather than Acrobat, I wouldn't worry about it too much. |

Don't get me wrong, I really like the 300D. I've had since the first day it was available and have enjoyed shooting w/ it. I just wanted to upgrade to something w/ a bit less noise, usb 2.0 and a pentamirror; the XTi/400D seems like it will be a very nice upgrade for me. \_ Another one is, 300D uses the outdated Digic1 processor, which is much slower and consumes more power. It also doesn't have the near-instant startup time of the later cameras. Between 350D and 400D, 400D loses dedicated LCD display and each pixel on the sensor is smaller (2 more million pixels on the same size sensor). 4/15 Son of Newton: http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news_9485.html \_ seriously lame \_ What's the point of running TabletPC OS if the screen is not touch- sensitive? \_ or even if it is? \_ touch sensitive is good for limited applications, like GUIs that give you big buttons (for UPS men, census poller, voting, etc). Most Win apps are not like that. In addition, the selling point of Tablet PC is not the original PC itself, but rather, the ability to draw freehand (take notes, highlight EXISTING documents, read eBooks), and character recognition. The latter is especially useful for East Asian languages. I use it to write Chinese all the time. I still find it slow and hard to type Chinese, and the char recognition program is amazingly accurate to use. Is the Tablet PC for everyone? Absolutely NOT. It tailers to a niche market, and will most likely never be main stream. But I think it's cool -happy Tablet PC user \_ Most Tablet PCs don't have touch-sensitive screens. They all require a special stylus (and as a consequence, they're usually more accurate and offer other features like pressure sensitivity, which is good for drawing apps). Even with a touch-sensitive screen, it's not like you want to smudge it up with your fingers anyway. |

4/5 For those laser printers with multiple interfaces (ethernet, usb, parallel), can you connect different computers to different interfaces at the same time? I am interested in one of those multifunction printers. I want the printer on ethernet for multiple computers, but also want to use scan and fax functions (which only works over usb) on one of the computers. \_ It probably depends on the printer. I have a Dell 3100cn and this works fine. I also tried it on my Lexmark Inkjet which had both USB and Parallel, and the manual said NOT to connect to both, and it worked. You would sometimes have to power cycle the printer. -ax \_ Why not just hook it up via USB to one box and make that a print server? That way you'll also have tidier print queues, etc. If it's a unix box, CUPS + Samba will do nicely. -John \_ not a laser, but I've used the print and scan of an HP officejet 71xx via jetdirect ethernet from a linux PC. I know windows PCs could use the same printer over the LAN. I never tried to have dualing scans to see how it resolved contention. |

3/23 Any recommendations for an Ethernet print server for a USB printer. Ideally would like it to work with XP and OS X. \_ Just use your PC as the server and let other PCs print to it. \_ If OP wanted to do that, they wouldn't be asking about standalone print servers, would they? \_ Correct. OP is working with a single laptop setup. -op \_ Just curious. Why do you need a server? \_ My friend uses his laptop in his family room on the ottoman, and his printer/WiFi/Cable modem is all in his office. He wants to be able to print from his family room to his USB printer. A wireless print server is not necessary, but a ethernet->USB print server would perfect. \_ Also, a PC running 24x7 as a printer server prolly sucks up a ton of pcu-cycles and energy. \_ Good point. \_ Buy a real network printer. That's the real answer. I recommend a Brother DCP-8045D with the Brother NC9100H Ethernet interface, not the overpriced HP stuff. Laser, duplex, flatbed scanning, photocopy, fax. I have the HL-5170DN (no fax, no photocopy, no scanning); now I wish I just splurged. To answer your question, go to http://newegg.com and search for "print server", and sort by "Best Rating". The problem with generic USB->Ethernet print server hardware is that you can't do any custom stuff over Ethernet (e.g., monitor ink levels, most manual duplex). \_ Yes, that is what I have personally. a LaserJet 4MP/PS with a built-in JetDirect Ethernet card print server. Got it at northbaynetworks in emeryville. I think it was $100. \_ If you want wireless w/ your print server, get an airport express. \_ Great idea! Can it share any USB printer? \_ I think so. I don't know which exact models it supports but I've seen people hook up all sorts of cheap ass usb printers and have them work. |

2/18 So I heard the real reason Carla got fired is she fired the whole \_ It's "Carly" which is short for "Carlton" department responsible for failing the revenue numbers, and as soon as the board heard about, they fired her instead. Any truth to this? \_Which department would be responsible for failing the revenue numbers? The finance department? Carly was on the fence for a while. People were just chomping at the bits to get rid of her. She made a lot of enemies during the whole stupid Compaq merger. \_ I would think marketing or sales department. the sales numbers highly dependent of sales/marketing functions as opposed to the the products. \_ Doesn't Sarbanes-Oxley title VIII hold executive staff criminally liable for fucking up this sort of thing? I can't quite figure out from the text if the board also hangs if the numbers are crap. -John \_ Well, there was a big fuckup in the sales dept in I believe Q3FY04. But really, Carly's been not well-liked here since she announced the Compaq merger. Not many are all that sorry to see her go. \_ Do you mean 'filing'? \_ I think "not meeting"...expectations. \_ I used to associate HP products with good quality. after the compaq merger, when I think of HP, I think of crappy home computers you see in bestbuy. \_ Ironic that two innovative companies in DEC and HP were reduced to Dell also-rans by idiotic management. I read that HP is thinking of dropping the printer business in favor of consulting because even though it is most of their revenue it is 'low margin'. Once HP gives up printing I think they will have nothing left. \_ Oh yes, and those other companies with business based on proprietary Unix operating systems are doing so well. -tom \_ If they stop making calculators I will personally riot. |

SD300 does, and is still pretty compact. \_ Nikon Coolpix 3200. Runs on 2 AA batteries. -- yuen \_ How much larger is a Canon S60/S70 than an S500? I haven't seen any in person. They are a new line and start at $100000 I think. \_ Costco or Walmart. \_ How do the printers at Costco work? The printout looks and feels like traditional photos. Are their printers inkjet or laser? Or do the printers actually shine light on real photo paper? The printout from my Epson Stylus Photo 1200 looks good, but it looks pretty obvious that it's not traditional photo even though I'm using some so-called photo paper. \_ They are using standard photo printers that cost thousands of \_ They are using standard photo printers that cost billions of dollars. Same process as traditional photos. So you can either invest in a printer, or pay $0.20 per print at Costco. \_ Don't standard photo printers print from negatives (shine light thru negatives on unexposed photo paper)? How do they print from digital files? \_ Just a guess--they use a thin lcd panel and project light through that. Frankly I don't know, but the process is great for my digital photos. \_ Dye-sublimation? The Canon CP series are dye-sub with a clear coating. Very similar to "real" photo prints. \_ These days many photo labs print all digitally. All films get scanned by their professional printers. Oh, and the Epson R series with 8 inks are supposed to be really good. I'm waiting for the wide format version of the R series to come out this year. 11/29 I haven't bought a PC in years. How does the quality of Dell, Compaq and Gateway PCs compare? That is, how long does a brandnew machine last until something breaks. Any other major brands I missed? I'm buying a low-end desktop. Thanks for any info. \_ Other brands: Sony, HP, Micron (now "MPC"), eMachines. Try CNET. \_ HP == Compaq, eMachines == Gateway. \_ They are still different "brands". i.e. at the least, the cases are somewhat different at least for HP <-> Compaq. Also I know the "HP" brand ones offer AMD but not sure about Compaq. I have no idea what their marketing strategy is though, if any. Having two brands competing in the same exact market segments seems idiotic. Oh and apparently IBM still produces desktop (business oriented) PCs. \_ You should just get a Dell if it's a desktop. They are as good as anything else, and they're cheaper to configure. All PC vendors use commodity hardware and re-use RMA parts, so there isn't much difference in reliability. -tom \_ Dell uses nonstandard power supplies. If your psu fries and you want to replace it you're out of luck unless you hunt down a $20 conversion cable or spend a lot on a "real" dell PSU. The most standard "PC" out of the bunch is probably emachines, although the PSU is a micro they are still relatively easily obtained. Everything else (including the MB if you are so inclined) can easily be swapped out of these el cheapo machines. If you want to replace parts yourself consider getting a white box system from Fry's. -wiliamc \_ "cheaper to configure": this is not always true. There are also a couple other factors one might consider. One being that Dell has some proprietary differences for no good reason so e.g. you can't just go buy a power supply if the Dell one dies, you have to get a Dell-specific one. Another factor is others may have a design (case etc.) you like more. Another factor could be that Dell is Intel-only and this entails a price markup for the same performance. \_ Typically, Dell charges about half what the other major vendors do for changing RAM, disk, video cards, etc, from the base models. I've never seen an example of things going the other way. Worrying about Intel vs. AMD is strictly for the slashdot crowd, to 99% of users there's no difference. -tom \_ I'm saying Intel generally costs more for the same performance. Do you dispute that? Worrying about changing a bunch of stuff is more a Slashdot thing IMO. HP appears to offer a sufficient selection of ready-to-ship versions. \_ I should point out there was never a "Dude, you're getting an IBM!" ad. \_ But there was a "no one got fired for getting IBM" which is almost as bad, in a spineless corporate sort of way. \_ Appealing to business cowardice is kinda funny. "Buy our stuff or you might get fired!" \_ Thanks for all the tip so far. I just saw the Gateway 3200S that has an Intel Celeron 2.66GHz. Does anyone know roughly what clock rate of a Pentium 4 processor is a Celeron 2.66GHz equivalent to, performance-wise? --- OP \_ The obvious response is "At what tasks?". For general internet use it's plenty. Probably pretty good for 3D games, but crappy for stuff that needs a big cache. \_ How about editing a huge Excel spreadsheet? That's what my wife does with my current PC. Let's say there's a lot of RAM and swapping is not a factor. --- OP \_ Just editing, you'll be fine. Trying to do big operations or computation is asking for pain. That's just what cache is best for. |

Are text and postscript the only data streams that can get piped to a printer w/o/ filtering? \_ No. PCL or (to plotters) HPGL. \_ Maybe, but it depends on the specific printer model. In any case, when printing from Unix, even if printer doesn't speak postscript, postscript is usually still used as a sort of intermediate language between your data format and the native printer language. \- well this is perhaps not appropriate for your homebase but for an institutional pritinting setup, you can certainly create filters so that you can do lpr foo.(dvi|tex|pdf) and the right thing happens ... this is what i do at my lab. 12/17 I have a PDF file that I can see perfectly fine with acroread. But when I try to print it to a big HP printer here at work it chokes on the first page that has some graphics and stops printing the entire file. What could cause this to happen? Does postscript levels have anything to do with this? I tried converting the PDF to PS and printing the PS file directly and the same thing happens. \_ the printer usually sends back an error message but the printing software might or might not show it to the user. 11/6 Laser printer? Or ink-jet? \_ I think for low-cost color printers, ink-jet is better. \_ Depends what you're needs /preferences are. if you want full-color , hi resolution photo printing == Get inkjet but remember inkjet ink is expensive and black quality isn't as good. if you want high quality text and halftone PS outout you can make great xerox copies of and you want high speed and cheap per page costs == get Laser. I got a HP4Mplus PS for $100 at "northbay networks" a used business equipment seller in emeryville. \_ Got my mom one of each so she can choose which to print on based on what she's printing. \_ Laser printers print faster. Do you have multi-page-printouts? You'll waste your life waiting for inkjet copies and wasting time replacing carts. Is startup time important for you (TTFP)? Laser is getting cheaper and cheaper ($300 for b/w and still the size of a typical home printer). Forget color laser unless you're willing to wait for warmup, you print a lot of color and/or youre willing to pay extra $$$ for a real-color-laser. \_ color laser dithers, anyway. \_ thanks for the tips. so my assumption that laser is cheaper for b/w printing is correct then. \_ Yeah, and get a laser printer with an ethernet port so you can share it regardless which computer is on. \_ That can cost another $200. Printing is expensive. No one can assure you your photos won't fade out in 12 months. OTOH, I've been watching this market advance very quickly and have serious doubts as to the 3-5 years-out viability of anyone doing digital prints online *or* off and making money off it (except HP and other printer, ink, and paper makers). --online photo employee |

3/20 Congradulations, Ms. Fiorina! \_ Nonsense. It's too close to call. Kudos indeed for killing two companies with one stone. \_ exactly. hope the remaining hewlett's and packard's kick her the hell out of hp. \_ Regardless of whether is the right move or not, Fiorina made the big mistake of alienating the hewletts and packards. when she should have included them in the decision making process. She made her own life difficult, merger or no merger. \_ She's a marketing bimbo. What'd you expect? Compaq swallowed and destroyed DEC. If they merge, all this means is HP will struggle that much more, we'll have 1 less choice in the market and what little was left of DEC and their tech will be 100% gone instead of 99% gone. \_ And don't forget DEC swallowed Tandem before that. \_ Nope. Compaq swallowed up Tandem when it couldn't get DEC. Two years later, it ate up DEC. \_ I'm not seeing how all this consolidation is advancing the field, improving shareholder value over the long term or making the consumers(home/business/enterprise) any happier or better served. I think it's only helping the chief execs stuff hundreds of millions of dollars in their pockets like we're seeing in the HP/Compaq deal. \_ Hewlett didn't show up at the board meetings--that's certainly not her fault. It's amazing how many pathetic geeks suddenly become experts on huge mergers when there's a female CEO involved. -tom \_ Bullshit. If he wasn't there how could he have voted on it? Anyway, http://www.uniontrib.com/news/business/20020115-9999_1b15hp.html. "Walter Hewlett missed three board meetings in July, including one at which HP's bankers from Goldman Sachs presented an analysis of the deal. " http://news.com.com/2100-1001-275678.html?legacy=cnet "But to insiders, Hewlett's move was no surprise--he skipped a key meeting four months ago to discuss the largest merger in the technology industry. Contacted in July about the added importance of a previously scheduled board meeting, Hewlett responded that he had plans to perform in an orchestra at the exclusive Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, Calif., according to a source familiar with the board's actions. "Everyone was told it was important and that the board would be making a decision to go forward or not to go forward" with the Compaq deal at the regularly scheduled meeting, the source said." -tom \_ The article I read is actually pro-merger, but it says that Hewlett was left out of the loop until a very late stage. |

Good stuff. \_ why did Gaddis have to forego chpater breaks, or breaks \_ why did Gaddis have to forego chapter breaks, or breaks \_ READ HARRY POTTER YOU MUGGLE! \_ tmonroe is that you? \_ Read The Moor's Last Sigh, if you have not already done so, I suggest. of any sort, for that matter? it makes reading his book so much more difficult \_ I said literature, not bedtime stories for 6 year old children. \_ and he gave you a decent reading suggestion, not a bedtime story for 6 year old children. read it before you knock it; if you've read it, say why you didn't like it \_ Okay I've read HP, and its like a Scooby Doo eps. The characters are way to sterotypical and there is little in the way of plot or character development or even social interaction. HP is like Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. Its okay if you are under the age of 10. \_ come on. it's for elementary school children. i read some of it. how is it literature? it reminds me of Roald Dahl. it's popular probably because elementary school is the level of these adults' reading. if you want a good fantasy, Song of Ice and Fire by Martin has moments of pure excellence. \- I've read the first two HP books and i think they are popular rather than good ... i can see why people like them, but they dont have complex character or plot or great dialog. I suppose you get cuaght up in what will happen to various characters and how the "mystery will be solved" ... i'd compare HP to a popular TV show rather than to literature. --psb \_ Read The Moor's Last Sigh, if you have not already done so, I suggest. \_ I couldn't finish it. But then again, I've never liked Rushides' work. \- I think "White Teeth" is pretty good. But some people are likely to get more out if it than others ... such as if you are familar with ehtnic issues in London. I dont understand why you say "new fiction" and then mention Hemingway. I liked David Lodge too: Changing Places has a lot of berkeley refs. This is literate fiction not "literature" BTW. --psb \_ I should have said new "literature". Basically I'm looking for something written in the last 10 years that has the depth of description and character development that was found in some of the better novels in the early to mid 1900s. \- what's the deal with "written in the last 10 yrs" ... you want a contemporary setting? you could try saul bellow's ravelstein. --psb \_ I gather that the 70-90 was a bad time period for literature, ie commie/liberal/feminist propoganda masquerading as literature. My take is that the situation has improved, and the writing is much more honest in the last 10 years. Contemporary setting is not that important for me as compared with good honest writing. BTW, I just finished "True at first light" and didn't like it much. That's why I'm asking about some newer authors. \_ My list of 20th century literature I think measures up well... ~cody/bookrec.html \- everyone i recommended "A Fine Balance" to liked it. fo rsomething more cheery, Changing Places, Small World, Therapy (last three are more good stories than serious lit. although you have to knpw a bit of litcrit to get SW).--psb |

I've personally used an Epson Stylus 600 which is supposed to do very good color for $250. -jctwu |
