6/5 I live in Berkeley and need to get rid of an old obsolete PC and
a monitor (from previous century). Is there an electronics recycling
        facility nearby?
\_ http://accrc.org. They'll even come pick it up for free. --mconst

        \_ Berkeley Marina Pier
\_ Pig! You could accidentally splash an alternative housing
              person that way.
\_ I prefer to call them "Urban Campers"
\_ How about Used Computers on Shattuck?
\_ pft. Don't do business with them.
\_ Berkeley Neighborhood Computers (BNC), they give these
machines to needy families. If you're still around campus
talk to any of the Tau Beta Pi or HKN officers, as they
           often volunteer with them.
\_ I never heard of them, so decided to google them. Looks like
they might have combined with ACCRC. This is the most recent
news I can find of them:

2/21 I just checked out CSUA's homepage for the first time since I
graduated many years ago. It's got a lot of stuff that overlap with
activities from other clubs like like mentoring (UPN/HKN), help
sessions (OCF), debugging session (XCF), etc. Since when did CSUA start
getting so serious? It used to be a hub for volleyball, netrek, foodp,
ice-cream, etc. Now it's stepping on other clubs. That's fucked up.
\_ Uh, CSUA has been involved with help sessions for a long time,
in conjunction (when they gave a damn) with the OCF and XCF.
As for mentoring, I'll let the mentoring program shadow dictator
           speak to that.
\_ The XCF doesn't do anything, and the OCF has never been involved
in help sessions in any meaningful sense. Certainly the CSUA is
a social organization first and foremost, but it also needs to do
things to justify its existence to the department. -tom
\_ search for foodp and netrek in the archiver. both traditions are
dead. fuck the kids running csua, they are fucking up traditions
\_ OK, now you're just trolling. Carry on. -tom
\_ The CSUA is still comparably sociable to what I know of its
culture from most of the '90s, but thanks to the hard work of
several recent presidents (most notably, IMHO, darin, ajaffe, and
karen) and their politburos, it's _also_ making itself useful on
campus. I can't see how this is anything but a great thing for
both the CSUA and the rest of the department. My loyalties are
split with HKN, and let me assure you, the CSUA has yet to do
anything to seriously "step on" what anybody else is doing --
thus far its recent expansions have covered completely new niches
or those abandoned by comatose groups like the XCF of the past 5+
years. (And yes, what happenned to the XCF as of late is very
much a shame). As per above, XCF has done nothing whatsoever
lately to be "stepped on" and helpsessions haven't been OCF turf
on my memory. As for mentoring, that's orthogonal and
complementary to what HKN (and sometimes UPE) do which is
_tutoring_. Oh and, fwiw, volleyball seems to be more HKN's turf
at the moment, but that's just an artifact of me being into it
more than most pro-volleyball CSUA people and hosting the
listserv on HKN. Anyway, come by the CSUA office some time if
you haven't lately and check out the new and improved CSUA. Trust
me, it's nothing to be ashamed of. -alexf (sodan 1999-?)

10/23 Have you guys heard about what's happening with the HKN course
surveys? I'd like to get a message to current ucb gsi's, but
the only ones I know are associated with hkn. Do you know any
non-hkn affiliated ucb gsi's that would be willing to send a
message to their distribution list? Please respond, thanks.
\_ The short version: due to privacy concerns relating to FERPA
           (http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html the
University (OAR, I think) has determined that GSI evaluations may
not be displayed online. HKN is looking into ways to find a
compromise between privacy concerns and free access. I think there
was a discussion on the subject on the EECS grad student mailing
list, but I'm not on the list, so I don't know the details. Mail me
if you want (a little) more information. -gm (!hkn)

1/16 How do you view grades? (your perspective on them)
        \_ Like this:
A: opportunity to work in the industry or research.
More likely to go to grad school or get an MBA
                B: coding monkey
                C: sys admin
                D: QA
F: flunk out, work in the industry and get rich. Hire a bunch
of people who got As, Bs, Cs, and Ds (Bill Gates).
\_ What drugs are you on? I want some! QA is QA because they
never went to school. Sysadmins get Bs because they take
classes they like but don't show up that much. Code monkeys
get Cs because they take classes they hate thinking they'll
be the next dotcom/netscape millionaire. Cal doesn't make
any MBAs. They all went to Stanford where _everyone_ gets
an A. And those who flunked out went to some JC and now
are assistant manager at some shoe store in the mall.
\_ gee, the Haas School of Business (one of the top 10
business schools in the country) would be surprised to
hear it doesn't make any MBA's. -tom
        \_ Like this:
A: hard worker and big time ass kisser
B: hard worker -or- big time ass kisser
C: hard worker but Prof/TA/grader never sees student in class
D: hard worker but in wrong class, kissing ass to avoid F
                F: just fucked
During my time in school I never noticed *any* correlation between
intellect and grades. The rest of life tends to reflect this also.
\_ If there were no such grades as A's and B's, then my report cards
           would look pretty damn good.
\_ If you're not planning to go to grad school, focus on passing
\_ they give idiots a false sense of security when they get A's
(see hkn), and they give smart people a undeserved insecurities
           (see nweaver, maybe).
\_ nweaver is a smart person?
\_ As a source of random bits slightly correlated with course
performance, and even more slightly correlated with
intelligence/clue. --HKN member and proud (and not because of

\_ what would you estimate to be the correlation coefficient?
\_ From what I've seen in the EECS Dept, they're probably around
0.7 and 0.3, respectively. Of course, these are rough and
based on rather limited observations. Order of magnitude
seems about right though. -above poster

\_ where can one find statistics about grades for uc berkeley?
\_ who cares. Most of the rich & infamous don't have good
grades-- Bill Gates, Ellison, W Bush, McNealy... the list
                   goes on and on.

For the last time,

Will the individuals screwing with my account please stop, now. This has
been going on for 3
years, and what have I done to deserve it? Perhaps a more appropriate question
is:

Why are hatred and jealousy a way of life in the state of California?

Perhaps no question is appropriate and I should refer you to my resume. To get
it, you will
have to purchase the The University of California's Mu Chapter Resume Book of

\_ Based on my trip to Greece last month... No. They're just Greek
           alphabets.
\_ How many alphabets do the Greeks have?
              \_ 24
\_ Really? Do each of the 24 have 24 letters too?

\_ In fraternities/sororities in general: Yes, i.e. Kappa Kappa
Gamma == Keys to the Kingdom of God. I'd bet HKN/TBP are the
same way, but I sure can't remember.

\_ Same with TBP. The Best Pussy
           Anyone know it for HKN?

           eta-lambda-epsilon-kappa-tau-rho-omicron-nu
"Eta Kappa Nu" are the first, middle(sorta), and last letters.
(HKN was originally an EE society only).
        \_ the answer is: http://www.sportbikes.dhs.org/Pictures/AngTub.jpg

1/29 Free cs164 manual/reader from Fall 2000. mail mjm
\_ Charge $0.50 and the demand will go up.
\_ I'll bring it to the csua office for a can of coke.
\_ I've got a lot of shit like this that I'd be willing to give away.
(164, 186, 61a, etc)... Is there any "reader repository" anywhere?
\_ ASUC does something like this, but they don't organize it at any
helpful level. If the csua could set up a box in the loung, it
              might save some paper.
\_ There is currently talk of organizing a reader recycling
program in HKN. If you _have_ to offload it, drop it off
at 345 Soda (HKN office); if HKN doesn't come up with,

11/22 Hello how does 26K shares + 60K salary sound for
HKN grad with 3+ years prog. (esp. on the web)?
I am paranoid a coworker@ my startup, MCSE + degree from
the 'fraud may actually be getting a better deal than me.
        How do I find out???
\_ Lesson number 1, HKN means nothing.
\_ Oh, I don't know about that. It means that a person cares
more about meaningless stats than about ability and clue.
\_ 26k shares? You planning on staying that long? 60k? Is your
3+ years work time or school time? No one cares about school time.
60k is nothing special. Wouldn't be surprised if the MCSE was
getting a better deal. Is this their initial offer or is this
what you got after negotiations? Might consider asking for more
cash and fewer shares and then bailing after 6-9 months to a better
           place.
\_ No, here's the real lesson one. NUMBER OF SHARES IS MEANINGLESS
except when coupled with the number of outstanding shares. If you
are comparing equity offers, use percentage-of-company. Your use
of shares shows you don't understand how to value them. --aaron
                \_ AARON likes Asian Chic.
\_ and Asian Chics like AARON.
                \_ I like asian chic
\_ I would personally adjust # of shares vs the likelihood of going
public, and what you think the eventual market cap would be --oj
\_ I'd take zero shares and higher pay and leave in 6 months.
\_ I agree here. % equity doesn't mean squat unless you know
or can guess the estimated potential value of the company.
Is the market $100 million or $1 billion? That said, % equity
is still a lot more useful than # shares.
\_ Yup. My company went public couple months ago and we did
                a reverse-split of 2 for 3. Other instances I know have done
reverse of 1 for 6. Once again, provides proof that number of
                shares means NADA!
\_ Taos will give 60k to a dropout with a 1.0 GPA. Obviously you are
getting the full value of your HKN membership now.
\_ 60k??? I'm like a GPA loser, and after 1.5 years am making
80k+. Goes to show ya' GPA don't mean squat in the 'real world'.
Numbnuts. Most of these guys are right though -- just plunking
down the number of shares isn't nearly enough info....
\_ And how many hours per week do you work?
              \_ avg 50hrs/week
\_ At work for 30/week. Working for 1 to 2 per week. 80k+.

7/29 When do the HKN survey results come out? I want to see how bad
        Fall did in EE122.
\_ Bad evaluations are known to disappear. Everyone in 169 ripped
on Brewer a couple semesters ago (he was too busy at Inktomi
to be bothered with the class - cancelled over 1/3 of lectures
and said little useful in the rest) and the evaluations
published were only the 4 or 5 good ones.
\_ Has anyone asked the HKN'ers about this?
           \_ HKN = Big Brother
\_ People with negative feelings tend to keep it to themselves,
either by not attending lecture or by not filling out the
surveys. So yes, the surveys are biased towards positive
responses, but not due to any insidious HKN plot. Insidious
plots are reserved for more important things such as the
              "CSUA Whiteboard Don't Take"
\_ Not for EE122. If you took the class last spring you
would have seen about 1/4 of the students show up and
even those people slept in lecture. The HKN survey day,
however, had the highest turnout. It seemed that everyone
came to the lecture with the intent of bagging that chubby
                  green Polo shirt loser professor.
\_ HKN is full of shit. They tell their candidates that
they need to submit a one page commentary on the
state of the dept, complaining or lauding something
about it. They tell their candidates that they will
give these letters to the dept or the chair of the
dept - no such thing happens. Some officers might
read it for amusement, and then throw them away.
\_ Last spring the officers passed on the survey
feedback to the department at the annual retreat.
                       YMMV
