9/23 Hey vthanh, kill your damn job!
\_ Poll (yes I realize 1 vote of politburo weighs more than 99 votes)
sqish: ..
\_ After viewing vthanh resume, I switch from no squish
\_ doesn't squishing depend on twink points or something
that tom used to keep track of? This seems like a
an offense that should recieve a *strong* warning not
a squish.
\_ After viewing vthanhs' resume, I switch from no squish
to squish: he's not nor ever has been a student at cal.
no squish: (99).
\_ mr. vthanh. the fucking pc you use to log on to soda probably
has more cpu power than soda. use IT for your stupid prime
numberiser.
\_ so i see, this machine should primarily be used for writing
to a world writeable file. Why again do we need a 800 Mhz
athlon for that?
\_ his bc job is using up most of the cpu and makes
interactive stuff on soda very slow. soda does plenty
of other things besides letting people edit the motd,
you fuck.
\_ soda is also the mail server. it handles lots of mail.
i guess it takes 800 Mhz to handle it all.
\_ don't forget its also the web server. it also takes
some amount of cpu power to support 100+ concurrent
logins of people running all sorts of interactive
programs.
\_ what sort of interactive programs are those?
\_ mostly tcsh, there are a lot of mudders on soda
who telnet elsewhere too. oh, and wall takes a lot
of cpu.
\_ yeah, it's really annoying how people try to
do math or do something that makes this machine
compute. Damn it, i like an idle machine! - alum
\_ emacs, pine, screen, irc, w3, w3m, lynx, etc
\_ I think the point is, if it's for school-work, he should use
a campus-machine; if it's for industry work, he should use a
work machine, etc.
\_ There is (and hopefully will be) no policy against using
CSUA resources for schoolwork. If you have forgotten
that the CSUA is a student organization meant to serve
a university campus, you're hereby reminded of
that. It is a different and orthogonal issue that
Mr. Nguyen may not have chosen the best venue for
running his job (even if it should turn out that it
was being done for academic purposes), and should have
consulted rootstaff beforehand to get pointed at a more
appropriate CSUA resource to use for this task. -alexf
\_ check out vthanh's resume, he's not a student at berkeley:
M.S. Applied Mathematics, CSU Hayward, March 2002
B.S. Computer Science & B.S. Mathematics, CSU Hayward, June 1998
\_ ok fine this is a gray area, maybe he is hosing soda
for classwork for grad school in hayward. he still
shouldn't hose soda for his giant bc is my driver's
license prime? jobs, he should use a different machine,
one other than the one 99.9999 percent of the CSUA uses,
it's rude and inconsiderate.
\_exscuse me ignorance but doesn't the ticketing
system only alot mr nguyen only a certain amount of
processing cycles per second to prevent any one
user from hogging the CPU?
\_ that's a previous version of soda, this is no
longer the case
\_ can we make it the case again?
\_ The lottery scheduling system wouldn't
make a difference for someone running only
one process. If he was running 5 jobs in
parallel it would make a difference. -tom
\_ what's he doing in a Berkeley student organization if he was
never a Berkeley student?
\_ Yeah, how did he get an account. I remember need my CAL
student id to get an account. - yet another alum
\_ From /csua/adm/doc/policies/processes:
As a courtesy to others, do not run programs that take
up too much CPU power for too long. Background processes
belonging to users who are not logged on will be killed
if they are taking inordinate amounts of processor time.
Am I the only one who remembers any of the CSUA's policies?
-geordan
\_ I'm guessing that the vast majority of csua'ers know the
policies and try not to break them.
\_ Why would his process eating up all the leftover CPU cycles
be a problem to others when he's running it with nice 20? I
think the real problem is that his process has a big working
set. Last I checked, RSS=24M and VSZ=73M. (BTW, I don't think
non-Cal-students/alumni should be given soda accounts. Maybe he
was once a student and then got kicked out and ended up in CSUH.
-- yuen

9/20 Berkeley, as seen from New York:
http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/2610.htm
\_ Very intellectual, balanced, and thoughtful. Have a look at this
week's Economist for some surprisingly reasonable articles. -John
\_ wow, this is SO much like watchmen. I mean, was the
NY Post what they based the "New Frontiersman" on? Anyone
else draw parallels to the recent events to the end of watchmen?
\_ what-evah. there are idiots everywhere. if some of berkeley's idiots
fall on the extreme opposite end of the political spectrum from the
idiots in most other areas, then so be it.
\_ I believe idiots in Cornell or Yale has banned students from
hanging flags from their dorm rooms. <insert ivory towers
comment here> Sometimes I feel ASHAMED of graduating from
Berkeley. I read the article and feel DISGUSTED about the
crap that goes on in that silly place. Where are the
patriots in Berkeley? Rise up and be heard!
\_ I'm in New Haven now, and there are flags all over all the
official Yale stuff, including the residential colleges
where the undergrads all live. If there is a specific
dorm room window ban, I'm sure it's some stupid fire
hazard thing, not political.
\_ All of it is accurate and correct.
\_ [contentless ad hominem blather purged]
\_ the whole thing was blown out of proportion. the nypost
sucks ass anyway, did you read their little tirade blaming
the bombing on the united nations?
\_ What was blown out of proportion exactly? It's all true,
accurate, correct, and precise.
\_ Barbara Lee is not a Communist. Neither is Ron Dellums.
Ron Dellums was chair of the House Armed Forces committe.
-ausman
\_ the world is collapsing, manhattan is about to generate
a giant sinkhole and all of lower manhattan could fall
into the hudson river, and they're concerned about
bfd not putting flags on their trucks? I'm looking
at the site and I see a column by John Gotti's daughter.
Here's a great factual 100 percent correct column
for you: http://www.nypost.com/commentary/32767.htm
\_ I hate to break it to you, but the New York Post is the paper that
New Yorkers who are too poor to subscribe to the New York Times
read. It's a pretty sensationalistic, entertainment-first, news
second kind of paper.
\_ It has nothing to do with wealth. The Post is _the_ paper for
New Yorkers. It's the local paper in the same way The San
Francisco Comical is the bay area paper. Anyway, yes the paper
is trash but the article is still 100% correct regarding
Berkeley. Go ahead, correct something in the article and let
us know where they went wrong.
\_ The NY Post is like a real newspaper in the same way Hard
Copy is like real news.
\_ No, it's exactly like the SF Chron. Anyway, no one has
yet said exactly what is inaccurate in the article.
\_ "They would be rotting in jail for their political heresies,
tortured with cattle prods. Or buried up to their necks in sand
and stoned to death." - THis is the concluding thought,
which to me, seems almost to say he wishes this is what happened
to us "Berkeleyites".. We should demand an apology....
im not even sure though if the paper is worth asking an apology
from...
\_ "...which to me, seems almost to say he wishes this is what
happened to us..." is a matter of your opinion and feeling.
The fact remains that what he said is true. You'd be killed
or permanently in jail in many countries for the same behavior.
You live in the freest nation on the planet. Enjoy it, but
don't piss on it. You've got no where better to go.
\_ If this article is correct, then I think people in Berkeley are
being idiots. However, I suspect that the writer is biased and
more interested in insulting Berkeley and liberals in general
than providing a reasonable opinion. For example, the writer
refers to Rep. Lee voting against the resolution supporting the
use of force. I saw a clip of Lee's speech on TV, and she
wasn't arguing that we shouldn't use force. Instead, she was
saying that we shouldn't act hastily in the heat of the moment
and do something we might later regret (e.g. kill lots of
innocent people).
\_ Opinions are just that: opinion. There's no such thing as a
reasonable or unreasonable opinion. Why is it so hard for
some people to separate fact from opinion? I read Lee's
comments about her vote right after her vote and "not act too
hasty" was not her agenda. "Not act" was her agenda. |

9/14 I'd like to make the following points:
(1) If you haven't read wall.log yet (or don't know how to), at least
one CSUA member had indicated to the Politburo that they felt
threatened and scared by the racist comments in the MOTD.
(2) The Politburo did not make this fact clear to the membership,
that it was a basis for the closing of the MOTD. Instead, it is
described as "anti-arab sentiment offending many members" in
/csua/pub/minutes/F2001/0913.politburo.
(no offense intended to the CSUA Secretary)
You're all human beings. I'll let you figure out who was right

I don't think censor means what you think it means. \_ censor: 1.A person authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or supress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable. 2.An official, as in the armed forces, who examines personal mail and official dispatches to remove remove information considered secret or a risk to security. 3.One that condemns or censures. 4.One of two officials in ancient Rome responsible for taking the public census and supervising public behavior and morals. 5.Psychology. The agent in the unconscious that is responsible for censorship. The only definition that makes any sense at all with your problem is number 5, and I don't think you are either clever or self-aware enough to be referring to it. Please speak English, not NewSpeak. -ausman \_ hey dude, you looked up the wrong entry. you want the definition of censor the VERB. the other guy had it right. \_ It's only ausman. And this is not the first time in the last several weeks that there has been a lengthy discussion about an article from a conservative news source. \_ Yes. Some sneak by. Most get deleted within a few minutes. The more solid the info in the URL, the more likely it is to get chopped. But you knew that. \_ A lot of students go to Cal for the Liberal/Radical rep, get bummed out when they meet actual radicals and reactionaries, and leave as NIMBY moderates. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. \_ I came to Cal at 17 as a blank slate. Never thought anything about politics of any sort before college. I was inundated with PC-ism and left Cal as a conservative because what they said made more sense than the book burners and hypocrites on the left. \_ Now see here, this is a pity: if you'd gone to BYU, you'd be batting for the other side! \_ The truth is the truth. I didn't come away from Cal as a bible thumping social conservative. I came away from Cal thinking the entire PC agenda was a crock of shit. Had I attended BYU, the illogic of the left would remain the same. \_ Liberals *know* that they are correct, from thier point of view, censoring a non-liberal statement is the act of making sure that incorrect information is not spread around. (This is just one of many possibilities.) troll \_ First of all, both /etc and /etc/passwd already exist and troll they're both owned by root on that machine. You can't troll overwrite them. Second of all, if there were to be such troll thing as user-controlled NFS you shouldn't have any more troll permissions than you normally would. In other words, if I troll don't have permission to create a new file or directory in troll / I shouldn't have the permission to mount a drive at that troll location. troll \_ But I could remotely mount your home directory on my troll machine where I have root and su to the same uid/gid you troll have on the remote host and then fuck with your files troll over nfs as "you". Depending on how the mount points troll are exported, I could do the same to root owned files troll as well, such as /usr, /var, and others. Got the picture? troll \_ We're talking about user controlled NFS clients, not troll servers. As an NFS server, I, as root, would never troll let you mount my disk so that you can fuck around troll with it unless you had a legit reason in which case troll I would have created a little restricted sandbox troll directory for you to muck around with. But I think troll it would be a useful idea (and relatively safe) to troll have a SMB-like user-controlled mounting of remote troll filesystems. I have yet to see why this is unsafe. troll I have an account on CSUA called jondoe. On my troll Unix box at home I want to mount everything in troll ~jondoe at CSUA by supplying my jondoe username/ troll password pair and everything in ~jondoe is mounted troll on my home computer. CSUA will only let me access troll files in ~jondoe with the same permissions that troll jondoe himself would normally be able to access. troll \_ Yes. That's all well and good. Now explain what troll prevents me from setting up a jondoe account on _my_ troll home machine with _your_ uid/gui and mounting _your_ troll jondoe account. NFS has what sort of security to troll prevent this? None. Please explain why I couldn't troll do this. troll \_ First of all, even stock NFS controls what troll machines you export to. Obviously it would be troll silly to export csua home directories to the troll world with no restrictions, but if you trust troll a particular machine, this isn't a problem. troll And second, NFS does have the facility to troll use public-key authentication, though it's not troll often used around here. -tom troll \_ Because you have to have jondoe's password to do troll this. Think of it this way. jondoe logs into troll csua, and types some magical command called troll "nfsexport home-machine-ip" which exports HIS troll home directory to that IP. Or, he can run troll "nfsexport jondoe@csua", type in his CSUA troll password, and get access to his files. Yes, troll NFS has minimalistic security, but it doesn't troll have to be NFS, maybe another similar system. troll Now explain to me why this won't work, and why troll this system, which would seem very useful, troll isn't in place. troll \_ Yes! This is exactly what I mean. Why isn't this troll done? -original poster troll \_ Can you think about the potential problems? troll \_ jondoe is exporting. Different from mounting. troll What was your question again? troll \_ Switch to plan9. |

10/26 Ugh, got a closed book closed notes exam, but I can bring ONE
sheet of double side notes. Does that mean I can bring any sheet,
like a 20"X16" double sided sheet? I'm not trolling.
\_ bring this: http://www.casting-couch.com/tour/0036-11/images/010.jpg
\_ Actually, it means that you should go to crate and barrel and
purchase a large roll of butcher paper and xerox the entire
book onto it and then bring it with you. DUH!
\_ Microfiche.
\_ hand-written? Or can you type it up and use abbreviations and
then use a Xerox machine to reduce it? That's what I did for
my poli-sci class. They gave the 8 essay questions beforehand
and said 5 of these will be on the exam and you get to choose
any 3 of them to answer. But can bring one 8.5x11" piece of paper.
I prepared all my answers before the exam and spent the entire
exam just copying text into my bluebook. Filled up the entire
bluebook plus the back inside cover.
\_ but in reality, how many of you used those sheets? Maybe
all you needed was the comfort in having that sheet, and the
trouble not having to memorize a few number of formulas.
\_ there's only one occasion when bringing that piece of
crap actually helped me. on my two physics 7b midterms,
it just so happened that the exact example of a refraction
problem copied out of a schaum's outline was on the test,
(except for the numbers of course), and on another, the
I had the equation for some Hydrogen quantum bs equation
on my cheat. it was awesome b/c I way above mean on both,
beating out the nerds who usually kicked my ass on exams.
unfortunately, i got totally fucked on my final, but
the glory was fun while it lasted. nothing like a good ego
boost during the dark physics 7 series days. you should
always go for closed book since the effort to
memorize stuff is minimal, prevents from getting totally
trashed on an open-book which is supposed to be "easy."
\_ Open book can be easier depending on the prof. Olander,
in NE and Komvopolus (sp?), Pruitt in ME, Gronsky,
tested, make it close book. This one or two pages only stuff
Weber in MSE gave open book exams that were pretty
easy. Their exams would have been next to impossible
had they been closed book since there was always too
much to memorize. ----ranga
\_ I usually found that creating the "cheat" sheet helped me
more than the actual cheat sheet. Though in some ME classes
the formulas came in handy. ----ranga
\_ These are my favorite exam rules. No having to book-flip to
search for stuff, and no memorizing of stupid formulae. Just
put down the key stuff in the class which let you figure anything
else out and don't worry. --PeterM
\_ The other one (which I personally like) is having created
or extracted a good 1-2 page appendix (EG, the back inside
cover of P&H for 61c), which is included with the exam.
A little more work in some respects, but very useful for
the students without the chaos of an open book test. -nweaver
\_ This is my absolute LEAST favorite exam rules. Look, if you want
to make a hard exam testing concepts, gimme open book/open notes
and I'll bookmark pages, mark-up lecture notes, whatever. If you
want to give an easier exam where some memorization is being
tested, make it closed book. This one or two pages only stuff
just turns the whole thing into some game where people try and
cram as much onto one sheet as possible... and the prof thinks
he can ask open-book-type questions because "you should have
written that important fact down." Grrr... I hate them.
\_ the other option which i liked better were the classes
that gave everyone the same cheat sheet attached to the
exam. why make people memorize a ton of equations and
why be unfair about cheat sheets? everybody knows ahead
of time what they'll be provided with and everybody has
access to all the same info during the exam...
\_ I agree. I refused to play the game and brought in 2 pages
of notes with huge handwriting. When the TA gave me trouble,
I told him to compare the number of bits on my two sheets with
the number of bits on the cram sheet of the person in front of
me with microscopic handwritting. The TA gave up eventually.
\_ Actually I'd have walked up to you and said, "Which page
do you want? You can only keep one." And if you kept
going on your two page thing I'd just fail you. Seriously.
Unless you seemed to have a genuine, non-renegade,
non-protest reason for bringing in two pages. But anyways,
this was just to balance your remarks.
\_ Because I have a vision problem and you're discriminating
against me and everyone like me. -!not the two sheet person
\_ Anyone who *needs* to bring in a sheet with teeny-tiny little
writing on it is screwed anyway. I handwrote all my cheatsheets
in normal writing and usually had about half a side left.
\_ i don't think most people really need them. it's
just an OK but rather time-consuming way to study for
an exam as you are writing the notes. keep in mind
that cal professors in engineering are mostly looking
for understanding, and not the amount of crap that
you blindly memorized.
\_ Depends on the department. Some profs. in MSE
really were interesed in whether or not your could
memorize stuff from the book. |

4/17 What's a troll? - curious in Cali
\_ Cool. It never occured to me to start a trollfest over the
definition of the word 'troll'. Fellow troll, I salute you!
\_ if you knew what you were doing, the thing above this is a troll.
A message simply to get people to respond and argue, etc.
just for the sake of it.
\_ a stupid quesiton isn't REALLY a troll. A troll is
somthing that pushes people's buttons that has been posted
purely for the joy of watching people makes fools out of
themselves by being full of justifed anger. A troll
is NOT someone posting sometihng they legitimatly
care about, nor is a troll someone making some stupid
in-joke.
\ Where is a good place to meet asian chicks is a troll
\_ flamebait a subcategory, different category, or synonym?
\_ a troll can also mean a certain type of creature found in
Dungeons and Dragon games. I think trolls are also creatures
guarding bridges, right? (yes, this isn't probably what the
original poster was looking for).
\_ troll is also a fishing term, I believe, where you try to
get the fish to bite.
\_ Anytime you're using a pole and hook you're trying to get the fish
to bite. Trolling is when the boat is in motion, making the lure
jump around like a living organism instead of a piece of plastic.
\_ That should be trawling.
\_ trolling is when you trawl with bits of computer geek guts
as bait
\_ no intelligent fish would take a bite on that...

3/14 Leave it alone, dans. Stifling the racist and the stupid is not the
correct way to deal with them.
\_ What would you suggest? -curious
\_ Why should anything be done?
\_ Censoring them is wrong. They must be confronted, their views
aired and addressed and put in their place in a public forum if
it is a public forum where they spew. Anything less and you
lend credibility. Why censor that which is easily debated and
shown to be false? Only the truth gets censored and by doing
so you falsely make it appear that their hatred has a basis in
fact.
\_ I'm not "curious", and I agree with you on this. If I thought
it was an actual hate diatribe, then I would have left it to
be skewered by public discourse. Thing is, it looked more
like a troll than anything else. It was a direct quote from
The Blues Brothers, I alluded to this in the message I put

nazis, another Blues Brothers allusion. -dans

3/14 March Madness is here! Join the "CSUA" group on http://espn.com! \_ Fuck March Madness. \_ college hoops suck big dick, i agree. \_ March Madness?!!! Is there a Macy's at Hilltop or should I go to SF? \_ There's a Macy's at Hilltop. \_ Is it better to be NIT champion, or invited to the NCAA tourney and lose in one of the earlier rounds? \_ Better in what sense? In terms of respectability and prestige, I would say getting into the NCAA tournament, but in terms of preparing the team for the future, probably winning the NIT. \_ Better to make Sweet 16 in NCAA than win NIT. Better to win NIT than bow out of NCAA before Sweet 16. \_ Actually, depends on the team. Some are lucky just to make it to NIT and would call themselves successful just for making it that far. But some teams like Vanderbilt feel jilted for missing NCAA and feel NIT is "loser's bracket." \_ Not to be the spoil sport, but why does anyone care? \_ (Trying not to be flippant here), but there are those of us who enjoy watching sports. Does it make a difference in our lives? Most likely not. Are there things better to do? Probably yes. You could make the argument why should anyone care about anything, but that's a pointless path to take. Just accept that some people enjoy the NCAA tourney. \_ 'dont ask, dont tell' -- keep your closet habits in the closet. We dont want to hear about them. \_ By closet, I assume you mean habits we prefer not to display or are too embarrassed to reveal. Who says that's the case? \_ You're missing the point. I think the fellow is saying, "Stuff your whiny-ass, self-important opinions up your ass, sit-the-fuck-down, and save your specious justifications for someone that gives a damn." But that's just a guess on my part. \_ And my point is, who's to judge what's a topic that people around here give a damn? Does it have to be *nix related or geek-related? Does it have to involve trying to get laid? There's no answer. If you don't like a topic, ignore it. \_ Petulant whine deleted. \_ I censor all topics of no direct and immediate interest to me. \_ Just that the results of other people's sporting activities are about the least important thing I can imagine. Unless you're monetarily involved in some way they're completely meaningless to the workings of the world. Is that the point? The ultimate in vegging out? |

Yes. I'm assuming you know what the difference is, but if you don't,

\_ Maybe not. I thought only US version is 128 bit strong

\_ dans, you are truly the van gogh of our generation.
\_ Can I have his spare ear?
\_ Wow, dans, you sure showed me with that ancient ascii 'art'
rip off. Your lame rip off doesn't make you any less stupid
or ignorant. If you spent more time on issues like the
problem with the treasurer or the mail spools rather than
posting crap to the motd and proving your manhood by signing
your garbage then maybe someone would have some respect for
you instead of pissing down your throat on the motd
everyday. You reap what you sow. By signing you show not
that you're a real studboy but that you take the motd too
seriously and are just a twit and an incompetent imbecile
incapable of performing the most basic duties of the office
you voluntarily ran for. Do your job. No one gives a shit
if you sign your filth.
\_ Fuck you, you twink. Problem with treasurer: he doesn't
read his soda mail, and I solve this how? Force him to
read his e-mail with the evil e-mail water cure torture?
I don't think so. Impeach him? Who's going to replace
him? You? Are you even eligible for the politburo?
Even if you are, you won't even claim responsibility for
your posts on the motd, so why the hell should anyone
expect you to be any better as treasurer? In light of
the situation, mikeh and I did the best thing possible:
we routed around it. Note our repeated admonitions to
send inquiries regarding donations to one of us, not
twohey.
Problem with the mail spools:
Short term answer:
a) I don't have root. b) machines have been the VP's
domain for a long time. mikeh and the other root staff
do a damn good job of managing things. I'm not going to
step on their toes by madly gzipping offender's
mailspools and dropping them in their home directories.
If that's the right thing to do in this situation, then
the root staff will do it. It's their decision. a) if
there is a different solution (i.e. reducing mail
quotas), they'll pursue it, but, regardless, it remains
their decision.
Long term answer:
Get more disk. Duh. I'll repeat what I've said before:
There's talk of a soda upgrade. Because we don't know
the exact kind of disk (SCSI, duh, but what kind of
SCSI?) we'll be using, we're not going to rush out and
buy a disk to solve today's mail spool problem if we
can't use it in new soda a month from now. Until either
soda gets upgraded or we decide it's not going to
happen, buying a disk is out of the question. If
someone has a spare disk they can donate, that might
help, but most of the offers we've seen have been
to buy or supply funds for the purchase of a disk.
As important to the CSUA as soda is, soda != CSUA, and
my job is not to baby sit it. If you want to criticize
the job I've done as prez, try actually reading the
job description first (it's in the CSUA constitution).
I don't sign my posts because I believe in owning my
words. I do it independent of the medium. I suppose
you must have difficulty owning your words, seeing as
they're all shit. -dans
P.S. No rip-off, it's straight out of the CSUA
Encyclopedia. Frankly I think the subsequent
discussion is damned funny.
\_ Have some balls. Impeach him, give someone else the
opportunity to do it. An empty office is better
than a do-nothing office. As far as the CSUA
Constitution goes, I wrote parts of it. I think I
know what it says. Don't use a piece of paper to
hide your ineffective cowardess. Stand up and do
the right thing. "It's not my job!" is the lamest
weakest cop-out ever given. Make it your job! Those
who came before and will be coming after will
appreciate it. Don't be another worthless resume
stuffing figurehead. |

of intellect rarely exhibited on the soda motd.

both -- motdd (yes, there are exceptions, I

\_ damaged goods, huh? So are you a virgin?
\_ Damaged doesn't mean "non-virgin". It
means "psychotic and emotional mess".
\_ What about those chicks who crave attention they
can't get anywhere else?
\_ At Berkeley the competition is so minimal that
all a chick has to do to get attention is breathe.

and look at your spool usage--you're actually
being responsible with it. I'd bet that that
majority of hte names there haven't given squat to
soda. (surprised to see blojo up there)
\_ an 18GB disk for mail would allow an
average spool size of 7MB (2600 passwd

even actively irresponsible usage could
fill it. -tom

\_ Space consumption always has a skewed distribution.
\_ Can't we just have a quota system with slightly smaller mail-spool
limits? Most people would be fine with it...
\_ I propose we adjust all mail user agents and delivery agents to
put the users' mail spools in their home directories, so that we
dont have this double mail spool/disk usage problem. -ERic

\_ soda's home directories arent remote-mounted.
\_ I think mail-in-home-dir is a reasonable setup but it
doesn't really help the problem of inadequate disk space.
In fact it's worse because people filling up their home
directories with coding projects will hoze mail. -tom |

11/31 Right. So basically I went to the ASUC meeting. I'm suppoesd to
inform any active csua members that if they are suspicsious of
any cult activity of this student group, then there is a Cult
Awerness Officer which the CAL/SAS has that will investigate any
Cult Activity. There. I've told you. - paolo
\_ Dude, my cousin's wedding was in a Clam building.
\_ does anyone else see the irony of Sodans talking about cults?
\_ No. Please explain.
\_ I am a Sodan of the Third Wheel. Are you in need of a Squishing?
\_ What is the definition of a cult? Aren't pretty much all
religions cults? For example, what would you call a group
of people who get together and pretend to drink their ex-leaders
blood and eat his body? The same group also think that their
current leader talks directly to their God. Would you call
this group a Cult or would you call them Catholics? Are the
ASUC going to investigate all the religious groups on campus?
\_ I would call them orthodox catholic and therefore not a cult.
\_ If it's big then it must be true. If it's small it must be a
Satan spawned cult until it grows big at which point it must be
true.
\_ There's one on the corner of Dana and Haste. They call themselves
a religious co-op. Co-op my ass. I got invited to dinner by
them. They were preaching to me to join their fucked up little
world. Damn fools need a beating. They keep following me around
on campus.
\_ Why would you go to a free dinner at a bible meeting? What the
fuck did you think was going to happen? Free sex and drugs? I
have zero sympathy for your dumb ass.
\_ who said i accepted the dinner you dumbshit?
\_ maybe you should with that curse'd tongue of yours-Ma Teresa
\_ i used to have a couple freinds there. if you ignore their
crazy religious crap, it is actually a very functional co-op.
after living in the USCA, i would have to say that except
for the religion, the usca could learn alot from them about
how to run good student housing at reasonable prices and
have everyone actually do their share. this pattern can
be seen throughout history: the only people who can make
crazy experiments in communal living actually work are religious
nuts. eg amana, oneida, the shakers etc.
\_ also no hazing. I don't know if a requirement of a knowledge
of unix can be classified as hazing (I mean they had some pretty
broad definitions in the packet (yes there's a 15 pg packet)
all of which are completely subjective (with words like
"personal" "degredation" "humiliation"). I suppose then it's
good that most people turn off the motd and don't wall because
i think that may be classified as hazing. So people, don't haze!
\_ I want to be the first to go on record that I tihnk the csua has
definate cult activity. Hell, I'll even go so far as to call it
Cult Activity. IS the Cult Awareness Officer required to justify
his or her capital letters and investigate now? -aspo
\_ Arrgghh. Look, I'm _required_ to report to the CAO if
any current member suspects cult activity. I don't want to
do that.
\_ all those capitals! Think of it! What exactly happens if
they investigate? -aspo
\_ They execute obnoxious assholes like you I think. It was
somewhere in the back of the 15 pages.
\_ even better -aspo
\_ alas no, remember this is berkeley, home of the PC
and the "convenience free" zone. So if anything, they'll just make
life hard for the csua, alums and undergrads alike, something i don't
think anyone here wants. - paolo
\_ Nov 31? Nov 30? Are we getting ahead of ourselves? (its Nov 29)
\_ When they say, "The plane is on fire, the engine is dead, we're
all going to die!" Do you say, "What color is my luggage?"
- alum
\_ Yes. I like to know that I'm going out in style.
\_ Not to mention there is no Nov 31.
\_ CalLUG is definitely a cult. I insist you report them immediately
Paolo. Maybe that will keep your moronic ass out of our hair.

11/16 Trevor Buckingham strikes again! ucb.class.cs61c titled "WHAT?".
How do we kick him out of the major? He's got to have violated
some university policies with those postings.
\_ Better to let him stay in the major. He'll be a minor PITA to
the professors as he moves through the system, but he'd be a
better example on the inside than litigant if thrown out.
\_ I read his post which is filled with explitives and insults.
Clearly this kind of post is unprofessional and unproductive.
However, some of his arguments make sense. Also, when I was
taking the the 61 series I thought the tests were poorly written.
I find it easy to believe that someone who knows computer science
very well could fail to do well on a 61[abc] test. -alum
\_ I didn't read his post but anyone babbling expletives on a public
university newsgroup reserved for class use should be shot and
forgotten. They're doing more harm than good by making others with
similar complaint get dismissed out of hand and rightly so. The
world isn't fair. Berkeley isn't fair. Shit isn't fair. Tough
shit. Deal with it. That's the lesson Berkeley teaches you. It
isn't about classes and midterms. -other alum
\_ Maybe you learned to be passive and weak at Berkeley, but that
doesn't make it Berkeley's "lesson".
\_ YA VOL! SIEG HEIL! HEIL! SIEG HEIL! Yes my brother
we can begin Das Final Solution! Kill the weak and
the jews!
\_ No, I learned to pick my battles and how to fight them.
Going off like a babbling moron on a class newsgroup isn't
being strong and non-passive. It's just plain stupid.
There's no other word for it except synonyms for "stupid".
Call yourself the mighty slayer of bad tests and a force
for change all you like but ranting like a whiney moron
child will not change anything and might make it worse.
The Berkeley lesson, in part, is how to deal with life.
Dealing with life successfully *never* includes childish
ranting. Maybe on your planet or in your mind but not on
the planet most of us hail from. Nice ad hominen sans
backing, btw. What would *you* say the lesson is? That
one should make a complete jackass of one's self anytime
things don't go entirely one's way? Anyway, 61abc aren't
about "knows computer science very well". Until you've
gotten into some of the higher level Ugrad and Grad courses,
you're not doing computer science; you're just hitting
buttons and trying not to get weeded out.
\_ For many majors at Berkeley, you're not here to learn.
You're just another cow with a number. More often than
not, it's just a survival contest. I can fairly say
this after grad. school when you tend to really find out
the kind of jerks your profesors are. They could
care less about your difficulties in class. - bitter alum
\_ Bingo. I was staff, not a grad student and all the
profs made it pretty clear the undergrads meant
nothing and the grad students were just slave labor.
Staff was just a tool. At least I had a nice stable
low paying job until I woke up. Anyone who thinks
Berkeley is about "learning" anything except basic
survival is a complete fool. Maybe it's different
in some tiny worthless major without any students,
but there's a reason they don't have any.
\_ I'm curious: how did the profs make it clear?
\_ After 3 semesters here, I fail to see what all this
flaming is based on. Yes, profs are busy; often too
busy to spend countless hours on students -- but where
on earth did you get the idea that you're entitled to this?
University education never was, and never will be, one on
one tutoring. I, for one, can testify to the fact that
I'm learning, and learning at the highest rate that _my_
physical limitations allow. That, to me, is a necessary
AND sufficient litmus test for what I would call an
education. Now PLEASE explain to me (without references
to gay sex) why someone would complain. The generic "profs
don't give a shit" doesn't cut it, unless you can explain
to me why that has hurt your education. -zyqqh |

8/30 Is there any possibility that politburo will reconsider their policy
concerning ftp? Too, we are unable to understand why POP3 access is ok
\_ shut up, ikiru
whereas those of us who have a tough time comprehending s/key ftp
have to suffer. Plain text passwds are sent willy nilly via pop are they
not?
\_ Before you can begin to expect consistent policy from CSUA
leadership, you need to exhibit consistent policy with your
margins in the motd
\_ The real answer is that since this is all done on a voluntary basis,
they don't have time to lock down everything at once. Your gripe
that you're being unfairly treated while pop folks are somehow
allowed to continue violating basic security concepts is ill
conceived. Expect that in time *all* of the incredibly lame
services including pop will be either secured or disabled in time.
services including pop will be either secured or disabled.
If the csua was run by full time staff getting paid to do so, I'm

biting the bullet from the whiners with zero security clue.

\_ POP3 is cleartext; there will be no solution other than turning
off POP3 for the foreseeable future (> 1 year).
\_ APOP is trivial to implement, and not cleartext. -tom
\_ does APOP work with everyone's favorite GUI mail reader, or
will they be bombarding root@csua with "My Outlook 95 doesn't
work anymore? Is e-mail b0rken?" My assumption was that
widespread conformance to encrypted POP won't happen in < 1
year. In regards to threads below, I eventually foresee
turning off POP3, turning on APOP, and sending a mass e-mail to
all CSUA members informing them of this and pine|elm|etc. and
.forward.
Turning off POP3
\_ no, ED IS!
ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD! answer
would piss enough people off of anything I can imagine. POP3
cleartext is THE way to sniff pw's. S/Key and ssh are a)
steps in the right direction, and b) get the userbase accustomed
to security annoyances. The reasoning is suspect, but for me
it's not something to put up a fight about since I believe I
understand the pros and cons. I look forward to non-availability
of POP3 script-kiddie port sniffers. -non-Politburo sodan
\_ Tough shit for the whining pop3 masses. Let them forward their
mail or read it locally. I don't want to see soda broken into
because some pop twits are too lazy to do the right thing.
\_ then get off YOUR lazy ass and find an alternative. Oh,
and PINE is not the answer.
\_ *I* don't have a security problem reading my mail. If
you're one of those whining security clueless pop users,
the problem is yours, not mine. *You* need to find an
answer, not me. Go look at APOP if you simply *must*
use soda as your mail server. I'm not lazy at all. I

3/05 I would like to vote for a "no porn" policy on the CSUA web site.
The situation is simply getting too ridiculous; not to even mention
that it may be violating some UCB policy. I propose that we all
porn pages off to OCF if they can host them and leave CSUA
to be used for more important things. THank YOu.
-A very concerned CSUA member/parent
\_ Show us what UCB policy is being violated, or for that matter
what CSUA policy. And define "porn." -tom
\_ I'm not your kids' parent. Deal with it. It doesn't take a
village to raise a child. It takes parents. Real parents. You
seriously believe that removing art from the CSUA's web site will
keep Johnny from seeing nekkig girlz on the web?
\_ If you want this done, propose it at the next politburo
meeting. If enough members vote for it, it will become
the law.
\_ Yep, and who gets squicked when non-porn gets removed or you
fail to police "real" porn and someone's kid sees it? Let it
be.
\_ No such UCB policy exists. In fact, this is a really really bad
idea because now you're trying to decide what's porn and not and
the "I can't define it, but I know what it is when I see it" method
doesn't hold water. Also, you're talking about possible
infringement of first amendment rights. I *strongly* suggest the
CSUA ignores all the porn. If you want a disk space policy, that's
a different matter, but you're looking for trouble when you filter
by content. At my site we don't do *any* sort of anything like
this. Until there's a serious legal problem, just leave it alone.
I suggest this concerned parent watch what their kids are doing on
the computer. It is your responsibility to take care of your kids,
not the CSUA's or any other computer organisation. Try NetNanny or
something if it bothers you so much. -A very concerned member
\_ Look, I'm as much in favor of a good yank as the next guy, maybe
even more, but I think a no porn policy might be good. It's not an
infringement of the first amendment, any more than, say, the
Chronicle refusing to print porn is. It's honestly mostly a matter
of bandwidth - the CSUA has had a lot of problems with porn getting
too many hits, and there's no reason to believe that'll stop. As
\_ So the problem is number of hits, not that it's porn.
Therefore, censorship solves the wrong problem and the
correct solution is either per-user hit limits or hacking
the httpd/kernel to assign scheduling tickets for user pages
out of the user's pool so if one user gets lots of hits it
only hoses them. -alanc-
far as what's porn and what isn't, that's a hard decision
sometimes;es, but it's fairly reasonable to say that it can be
judged on a case-by-case basis (like everyothing else in this
\_ Really? You plan to personally view all 5000 gifs I intend
to make available on a weekly rotating basis?
crazy, shiftless world). Or, another way of doing it is saying
that any content that generates a certain level of bandwidth
should require approval beforehand. The question isn't whether
\_ One man's porn is another man's art. Are we using my
standards or yours? I'm surprised to see such right wing
control oriented fascism coming from you, Ted. Where have
the barefoot days gone?
porn is bad - it's whether CSUA should shell out the bucks to host
it. -thepro
\_ The problem is CSUA bucks come via mandatory student fees
and are therefore bound by all sorts of University
& ASUC regulations. If the CSUA decides to exercise
editorial control over web pages it causes many more
problems than not doing so. (Not that the CSUA spends
any bucks on web serving - the machine was donated and
the net is paid for by the University.)
\_ THANK YOU! This is the point I failed to make
earlier. -first to say leave it alone.
\_ Oh pull that dildo out of your ass and shut the fuck up. If
keep your kid from viewing porn if it bothers you. Don't
make the rest of the world do your work for you. -aspo

\_ Yeah, I suppose all the taxes, shitty roads,

is restriction of speech by someone who doesn't control
the resource, like the government. If you want soda
