3/10 Is there still a difference between US and int'l encryption on browsers? Yes. I'm assuming you know what the difference is, but if you don't, I'd be glad to explain it. -dans \_ Maybe not. I thought only US version is 128 bit strong encryption but now it seems that int'l version is also like that. Does that have to do with the recent legislation? \_ Ah, I forgot. How does it eat? \_ Now that you've added a mouth so the pig can eat, where does the food go after it digests? \_ The *real* question is: how does the user that movie did. And now that it has a mouth, what would it say with such an uncomfortable object up it's ASS?? \_ Thanks for answering my queries regarding the lack of mouth and where the food goes when it digests. I notice that the pig is now dead and cooked. So does that mean the guy with the head in the pig can eat his way out now? breathe? \_ I also have another question, i forgot to ask before: why does the pig have an "n" for ears? I thought pigs had more pointy and large ears -- at least the one in that movie did. I did not realize pigs could talk until I saw that movie. Since this pig now has a mouth, what would it say with such an uncomfortable object up it's ASS?? \_ Also, thanks for answering my queries regarding the lack of mouth and where the food goes when it digests. I notice that the pig is now dead and cooked. So does that mean the guy with the head in the pig can eat his way out now? \_ More importantly, where do you stick the apple when you cook it? \_ dans, you are truly the van gogh of our generation. \_ Can I have his spare ear? \_ Wow, dans, you sure showed me with that ancient ascii 'art' rip off. Your lame rip off doesn't make you any less stupid or ignorant. If you spent more time on issues like the problem with the treasurer or the mail spools rather than posting crap to the motd and proving your manhood by signing your garbage then maybe someone would have some respect for you instead of pissing down your throat on the motd everyday. You reap what you sow. By signing you show not that you're a real studboy but that you take the motd too seriously and are just a twit and an incompetent imbecile incapable of performing the most basic duties of the office you voluntarily ran for. Do your job. No one gives a shit if you sign your filth. \_ Fuck you, you twink. Problem with treasurer: he doesn't read his soda mail, and I solve this how? Force him to read his e-mail with the evil e-mail water cure torture? I don't think so. Impeach him? Who's going to replace him? You? Are you even eligible for the politburo? Even if you are, you won't even claim responsibility for your posts on the motd, so why the hell should anyone expect you to be any better as treasurer? In light of the situation, mikeh and I did the best thing possible: we routed around it. Note our repeated admonitions to send inquiries regarding donations to one of us, not twohey. Problem with the mail spools: Short term answer: a) I don't have root. b) machines have been the VP's domain for a long time. mikeh and the other root staff do a damn good job of managing things. I'm not going to step on their toes by madly gzipping offender's mailspools and dropping them in their home directories. If that's the right thing to do in this situation, then the root staff will do it. It's their decision. a) if there is a different solution (i.e. reducing mail quotas), they'll pursue it, but, regardless, it remains their decision. Long term answer: Get more disk. Duh. I'll repeat what I've said before: There's talk of a soda upgrade. Because we don't know the exact kind of disk (SCSI, duh, but what kind of SCSI?) we'll be using, we're not going to rush out and buy a disk to solve today's mail spool problem if we can't use it in new soda a month from now. Until either soda gets upgraded or we decide it's not going to happen, buying a disk is out of the question. If someone has a spare disk they can donate, that might help, but most of the offers we've seen have been to buy or supply funds for the purchase of a disk. As important to the CSUA as soda is, soda != CSUA, and my job is not to baby sit it. If you want to criticize the job I've done as prez, try actually reading the job description first (it's in the CSUA constitution). I don't sign my posts because I believe in owning my words. I do it independent of the medium. I suppose you must have difficulty owning your words, seeing as they're all shit. -dans P.S. No rip-off, it's straight out of the CSUA Encyclopedia. Frankly I think the subsequent discussion is damned funny. \_ Have some balls. Impeach him, give someone else the opportunity to do it. An empty office is better than a do-nothing office. As far as the CSUA Constitution goes, I wrote parts of it. I think I know what it says. Don't use a piece of paper to hide your ineffective cowardess. Stand up and do the right thing. "It's not my job!" is the lamest weakest cop-out ever given. Make it your job! Those who came before and will be coming after will appreciate it. Don't be another worthless resume stuffing figurehead. |

More like wannabe college-cool lesbians. A soda chick claiming lesbianism is merely the typical its-so-cool college attitude compounded by the need for a defense against the typical sex starved soda geek she comes into contact with through the csua. \_ This analysis is so right on that I must comment on it explicitly. And since when is being on soda a long time a good thing? I've been around a few years longer than aspo but I don't spout off about it as something to be proud of. It isn't. I'm simply older. \_ yah but someone said welcome to the motd, now go away. I've been here long enough thank you. Get used to it. -aspo \_Chill. \_ Yeah, no shit. Take it easy, it's the holidays. \_ Is that a threat? Get used to it? I don't see anything to get used to. You're just another motd twit with a big mouth, a closed mind, and a bad attitude. That sort of talk will really bring em around to your way of thinking! How about instead of smearing your predetermined politically correct noise all over, you wiped the motd to put up my plee. \_ "plea" Been to college yet? Or HS? attempt to explain why same sex marriages should exist? I doubt you can do it without resorting to various forms of personal attack as this is just your personal feelings and beliefs based not on a true sense of justice or the law or fairness or anything else that others might find convincing unless they already held your beliefs. Anyway, just because it's on the ballot doesn't mean it will become law. I think you'll find the 80/20 vote against this a bit eye opening if it makes the ballot. -registered voter \_ no the brains of a pissant is for thinking I wiped the motd to put up my plea. \_ Nice to see you're with it enough to learn to spell a simple word like "plea" with some help. \_ Your intense hatred makes you overestimate the amount of hatred in the general population. Recent surveys show a majority of Californians support domestic partner benefits for gays and only ~50% support the Knight Initiative - far lower than your 80%. \_ I don't hate anything. Go hang your little lefty labels elsewhere. I have tremendous disdain and disregard for those who go into hysterics about their 'rights' without any thought for anything or anyone else. What surveys are these? And were they of "likely voters" or random people on the street who only have a 1 in 5 chance of being a voter? It's usually the latter. Go ahead, put it on the ballot. 11/31 Right. So basically I went to the ASUC meeting. I'm suppoesd to inform any active csua members that if they are suspicsious of any cult activity of this student group, then there is a Cult Awerness Officer which the CAL/SAS has that will investigate any Cult Activity. There. I've told you. - paolo \_ Dude, my cousin's wedding was in a Clam building. \_ does anyone else see the irony of Sodans talking about cults? \_ No. Please explain. \_ I am a Sodan of the Third Wheel. Are you in need of a Squishing? \_ What is the definition of a cult? Aren't pretty much all religions cults? For example, what would you call a group of people who get together and pretend to drink their ex-leaders blood and eat his body? The same group also think that their current leader talks directly to their God. Would you call this group a Cult or would you call them Catholics? Are the ASUC going to investigate all the religious groups on campus? \_ I would call them orthodox catholic and therefore not a cult. \_ If it's big then it must be true. If it's small it must be a Satan spawned cult until it grows big at which point it must be true. \_ There's one on the corner of Dana and Haste. They call themselves a religious co-op. Co-op my ass. I got invited to dinner by them. They were preaching to me to join their fucked up little world. Damn fools need a beating. They keep following me around on campus. \_ Why would you go to a free dinner at a bible meeting? What the fuck did you think was going to happen? Free sex and drugs? I have zero sympathy for your dumb ass. \_ who said i accepted the dinner you dumbshit? \_ maybe you should with that curse'd tongue of yours-Ma Teresa \_ i used to have a couple freinds there. if you ignore their crazy religious crap, it is actually a very functional co-op. after living in the USCA, i would have to say that except for the religion, the usca could learn alot from them about how to run good student housing at reasonable prices and have everyone actually do their share. this pattern can be seen throughout history: the only people who can make crazy experiments in communal living actually work are religious nuts. eg amana, oneida, the shakers etc. \_ also no hazing. I don't know if a requirement of a knowledge of unix can be classified as hazing (I mean they had some pretty broad definitions in the packet (yes there's a 15 pg packet) all of which are completely subjective (with words like "personal" "degredation" "humiliation"). I suppose then it's good that most people turn off the motd and don't wall because i think that may be classified as hazing. So people, don't haze! \_ I want to be the first to go on record that I tihnk the csua has definate cult activity. Hell, I'll even go so far as to call it Cult Activity. IS the Cult Awareness Officer required to justify his or her capital letters and investigate now? -aspo \_ Arrgghh. Look, I'm _required_ to report to the CAO if any current member suspects cult activity. I don't want to do that. \_ all those capitals! Think of it! What exactly happens if they investigate? -aspo \_ They execute obnoxious assholes like you I think. It was somewhere in the back of the 15 pages. \_ even better -aspo \_ alas no, remember this is berkeley, home of the PC and the "convenience free" zone. So if anything, they'll just make life hard for the csua, alums and undergrads alike, something i don't think anyone here wants. - paolo \_ Nov 31? Nov 30? Are we getting ahead of ourselves? (its Nov 29) \_ When they say, "The plane is on fire, the engine is dead, we're all going to die!" Do you say, "What color is my luggage?" - alum \_ Yes. I like to know that I'm going out in style. \_ Not to mention there is no Nov 31. \_ CalLUG is definitely a cult. I insist you report them immediately Paolo. 9/8 How do reverse name lookups work. CSUA has the IP addess 128.32.43.52. So the <DEAD>ns1.berkeley.edu<DEAD> servers have an entry like 52.43.32.128.IN-ADDR.ARPA IN PTR http://soda.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU but if I'm doing a revers lookup from say MIT how would it pull out that resource record from the Berkeley nameserver? (As in, how would it know to look at Berkeley's name server) \_ Same way it does for http://berkeley.edu - it asks the root nameservers "Who should I ask for info about the 32.128.IN-ADDR.ARPA domain?" and they return the list of nameservers it's delegated to. \_ But that's assuming that you're using strictly class A, B, or C addresses. Many sites are classless (CIDR). \_ Still works basically the same. Start at the top and ask your way down the list. Read the OReilley BIND book if you want to know the details, since there are far too many to discuss in the motd. \_ Unfortunately, BIND still is pretty much classful in in-addr delegation. It can only delegate on octet boundaries. \_ 32.128.IN-ADDR.ARPA is just another domain, and can have CNAMES in it as well. use your imagination. \_ ooh la-la! |

12/28 Why do phrases like "the City of Berkeley" and "the State of California" refer to the government bodies rather than the city/state as a whole? Does it relate to something in our Constitution? Thanks. \_ It's synecdoche. --pld \_ They're notional places, but when someone says that they do something, or that something is done to them, the default referent is the government. "The State imprisoned..." "...sued the State" "City assessed taxes..." etc. but "I live in the City of Berkeley", "the fastest computer in the whole State of California". \_ I always thought that when you say state or city then that means the state or city. But when you say State, or City then it becomes the government. E.g. "I live in the city of Berkeley, and the state of California." Besides, it's just another way for the government to screw with your heads. \_ Putting it another way: how else would you say you got fucked over by a particular government entity? It's just easiest to refer to the entity as a person. Like so, "Berkeley fucked me for selling \_ And so in this country now, Corporations (legalized organized crime) have the rights of a person where many people still do not. crack to kids last week." And, "The United States bombed those fuckers again". Or, "The State of California has a primary so late that their primary votes are meaningless". \_ So what does it mean when we say "People vs. Larry Flynt" \_ Since in theory, the government is of/by/for the people, when the gov. takes action, We The People are taking that action. It happens in all of our names. So, the Government = The People and vice versa. We're here to help you. \_ No it's not. It is *metonymy*. \_ These two terms are often interchangeable. Metonymy is just a slightly more general description. \_ The current state government makes me feel all icky. Odds are that if the original poster knew what synedoche Where can I get a synecdouche? \_ Mass qtys of motd crap can be replaced by one word. \_ But only if pld comes up with it. -John \_ You mean you deleted clear English explanations and left the motd with a single word to look up in a dictionary? Odds are that if the original poster knew what synecdoche meant they wouldn't have asked on the motd, you moron. \_ Better living through a college-level vocabulary! \_ kwyjibo - it's a big dumb bald ape, kwyjibo. \_ Better living through clear communications. If a fourth grader can't understand your writing then you're over writing. \_ "Know your audience," you mean. (Wouldn't it make sense to assume a CSUA audience would have a better vocabulary than your average group of 4th graders? Or is the common denominator really that bad?) \_ No. It wouldn't make sense. When I said 4th grade, I meant it. \_ And yet you refuse to substantiate it. \_ Yeah, so what? Your point? Have you put me in my place or something with that comment? I suggest Prozac. I didn't intend for that to be a putting-in-place sort _/ of comment, it just came out all wrong. I just wondered why you chose to make such a strong statement, and what evidence you might have for it. I know the schools are bad, but I hadn't dreamed they were as bad as that statement would imply, if I understand you correctly. \_ Oh. Well excuse my nasty reply then. In any case, yes, even Berkeley, the shining gem of the UC system has deteriorated to the extent that IMHO it is no longer the place of higher learning and thought it once was. Mostly, it's "gimme my degree, I'm gone". For those about to contradict me with "Well, I'm not!", please note the word "mostly". You can look it up. ;-) \_ Delete it all you want, twit. It won't change the fact that if a college student won't or can't acquire a decent command of English vocabulary, he probably isn't worth talking to. -John I deleted nothing. I always judge people _/ by their vocabulary. Because as we know, a big vocabulary means you're a worthwhile person and a lesser vocabulary means you're a worthless scumbag. I base all my friendships on vocabulary size. John, I love you but you're not making sense. \_ To clarify: I was talking about willing- ness to learn, i.e. use a dictionary, when someone uses a word you don't know. I had no idea what "synecdoche" meant, so I looked it up. Maybe that is too much to expect from university students. -John \_ Had someone not deleted the rest of the motd, you would not have needed to look it up. Hence my original gripe about scrubbing the simple English description that was posted. So how do you account for the success of the _/ New York Times, or of the Wall Street Journal, or even of the San Jose Mercury News? \_ Easily. They're written for grade school level. I read 2 of those 3 and you'll *never* find words like that in those papers. \_ I'm stunned. Are you people seriously arguing against clear writing? Where did you learn that it's a good idea to use big words when explaining something to someone? Would you be happy if your Professors used "college level vocabulary" while explaining class concepts? I think not. \_ They had damn well better use "college level vocabulary". I didn't pay tuition to learn academic concepts from "Bow-wow the Dog and the Differential Equation". No one cares if you talk heap big word, but I'd sure prefer people using descriptive terms if possible. -John \_ So you want them to smother you with 'big words' you need to look up while trying to learn about Diff.Eqs.? Most of your Profs have sufficiently larger vocabularies that you'd learn lots of new words in class but no new concepts. While teaching a new concept, it should always be in terms already clearly understood. I didn't come to Berkeley for an in-class vocabulary lesson. I came here to learn. Vocabulary is rote memorization which any 4th grader can master. \_ Well, sure, if you are explaining synecdoche to someone whom you suspect has never encountered the concept before, you're not going to just randomly say "Well, that's synecdoche" and walk away. But if you think that, as in the example above, it might be effective to point out that calling the government of the City of Berkeley "the City of Berkeley" is the same sort of literary process as ones that the person may have encountered before when reading, e.g., Shakespeare, why not make a stab at it? It can save paragraphs and paragraphs of typing, and one well-chosen word can often serve your purposes better than hundreds of clumsy examples. I personally don't think that the tradition of American anti-intellectualism (said tradition which gives rise to the epithet of "using big words") is one that I want to have any part in upholding. And you're actually quite wrong about what I expect from my professors; I want them _not_ to talk down to me. (They're often the only ones who don't, and I have never found it to be an unrewarding experience to make the effort to try to understand them.) \_ No one mentioned Shakespear. Someone simply stated, "It's synecdoche" without further explanation. Whether or not further explanation was necessary we can't know unless the original poster tells us if that was useful to them, but since others had already typed out multi line common English descriptions with examples, why not just leave them? Again, I say that IMHO you'd be really pissed off if the Profs all packed their lectures with those 'big words' and you spent your lecture time flipping through a dictionary instead of learning a new classroom concept. Since when is speaking in common English the same as 'talking down' to someone? There's no correlation between 'big words' in the classroom and enhanced learning. God, please don't let any of these people teach my children in anything other than a 4th grade English class. Vocabulary is little more than rote memorization and I didn't go to Berkeley and pay all that tuition and spend all that time to enhance a skill I had mastered by the fourth grade. Oh, btw, I was wrong about the newspapers. They write to an 8th grade level. :-) \_ Shuddup John. You graduated years ago. One of the requirements of old-fart-dom is to not make "back in my day" comments, at least not in front of the children. \_ 1) Not John. 2) John didn't graduate so long ago that he can't have a valid opinion on the subject. 3) Yes, the writer has graduated but there isn't a single "back in my day" comment in there. Had I said, "I don't go to Berkeley and pay all that tuition..." the rest would remain factually correct. The tense of my phrasing doesn't change the facts. You copped out. 4) I would like to say that back in my day, the students wouldn't have made such a ridiculous comment/reply, but their reading comprehension was no better than yours, to everyone's detriment. |

Ing. God. does it really *have* to be the case that the soda motd and wall are seemingly-infinite sources of tastelessness and pointless flamage? Might not this sort of babble be part of the reason that newbies are turned *off* to walling and the motd? In order to make my point stick, signed: --brg \_ Yo Mr. Genius, heard of a .hushlogin file? Sign your name; you're not "everyone". Besides, my complaint is not that blocking it out is impossible; incidentally, 7 Sept. 1997 is also the day I got my CSUA account. The complaint is that anyone who chances to see it thinks "Holy shit, the CSUA is full of three-year olds!" As officers of the CSUA it seems like we should be working to make the CSUA less obviously full of cliquishness and rampant pointless screaming and more like a place and a community where CS undergrads who *aren't* already part of the CSUA feel like they could join in without getting themselves toasted the first time they try to say something by some vengeful tenured undergraduate they've never met and never will meet who happens to have a chip on his shoulder. The fact is that the core group of active CSUA members (and by that I mean outside of soda the machine) is pretty darn small these days, and "come get a soda account so you can wall" is something I can only barely say with a straight face to someone I don't think has a skin thick enough to classify them under the species of Armadillo dirty words on the motd. -John or Tortoise. --brg \_ As far as I remember, the "active" membership hasn't been much bigger. Active wallers, same thing. Just because the old members are still around doesn't mean there's no new blood. And if there isn't, it's probably due to factors far beyond dirty words on the motd. I think that having an informal online environment, in addition to public machines in the lounge, donut runs, help sessions and stuff like that actually would increase the csua's attractiveness. -John \_ Ok, you've proved you're a genius. Now you can go and apply that genius to changing the personalities of everyone you think is a loud mouth on soda. Good FUCKING luck. When you're older maybe you'll understand you can't change people. 9/21 I joined CSUA + SODA for 2 reasons: community, and email. Let's be honest here, why 90% joined is email alone, and 10% community. But for good or bad, the MOTD has a tradition of being used for flame wars. This is inevitable and not necessarily a bad thing. No one has to participate. No one has to join a flame fest. No one has to read the MOTD, just like most people don't read the wall. My only objection re: the MOTD is people who delete someone else's comments because they disagree with them. I feel people should either counter-comment in a constructive way or ignore it. \_ No, i delete them because in some people's attempt to sound half intelligent they come up with something totally idiotic. \_ But who are you to decide another point of view is idiotic? If something is idiotic, it should be self evident and not require someone to protect the rest of us from some form of intellectual contamination. \_ Surely someone could devise a way to make the motd append-only, and some sort of automatic garbage collection scheme. \_ Why bother? It's just the MOTD. You can read it or not at will. Nothing forces you to read it. Nothing forces you to reply to anything on it. \_ speakin' of garbage collection, how's yer dad doing in his new job? \_ And then when someone lovingly posts the eye of argon or the complete starr report, everyone is forced through a meg of crap when they login \_no, only the twinks who don't know to do 'touch ~/.hushlogin; \_ CVS would be silly for this application. is PRCS cat "more /etc/motd" >> ~/.login' \_ FreeBSD does have append-only files. And whoever has been using pico to edit the /etc/motd, stop it damnit, pico does auto line wrap which is really fucking goddamned annoying. \_ CVS would be silly for this application. The motd needs to be trimmed sometimes or it grows without bounds. It's volatile by nature. If you want your words immortalized, how about taking up cuneiform or masonry? --PeterM \_ I think the idea is that, if the motd is to be trimmed, it should be trimmed only on the basis of age and not on the basis of content; scorching the motd is a protest against any censorship of particular content (as often happens). -- not the motd nuker \_ Although censorship is bad you've got to admit that there's a difference between something like CNN and Rush Limbaugh. Censorship sucks and it cuts both ways so a big happy "Fuck you!" to whoever couldn't deal with the truth about Billy Boy's problem with the truth. \_ there are usually 3 things that go on the motd - announcements, random jokes, and political stuff. I don't have much of a problem with political stuff unless they show a lack of intelligence and logical reasoning. You would expect Berkeley students to show more in-depth reasoning than the superficial slanders seen on the motd (i guess there are a lot of eecs students here who don't care much about using their brains for other things besides computers). 8/13 Id like to summarize the motd 1) insecure soda geeks backhandedly brag about their various perceived accomplishments. 2) soda geeks with bad or nonexistent gpa's try to convince themselves and others that they are smart anyway, and correctly point out that in order to be a wage slave, an education probably doesn't matter anyway. 3) various technical questions are identified to this asteric: * Feel free to re-insert the lift of this projection, but I think this adequately preserves the structure of the original conversation. \_ In the field of CS, education doesn't mean a whole lot. I know a lot people with sub 3.0 GPA making $75k-$100K/yr with less than 3 years in the workplace. I have 3.5 and I haven't made anywhere close to that. \_ Neither Gates nor Jobs has a college degree at all, and many other rich twinks. 3) various technical questions are identified to this asteric: * \_ What in the hell is this supposed to mean? \_ I think that this entire MOTD entry was composed by some kind of AI experiment. 9/10 Positions open at LucasArts. Look in /usr/local/csua/jobs/LucasArts for: 3D_Tools_Programmer Games_Programmer Level_Designer. Don't blame me for the hokiness. -mogul (mail from nweaver to csua@csua) Soda, for a considerable time, has maintained a hostile online environment. I do not care to comment more on soda's "traditions", but I have observed that the soda environment is affecting me. I have grown increasingly hostile online, and this trend is disturbing. Several times in the past I've tried to moderate my online behavior, without success. Therefore, I am terminating my soda account, removing myself from csua@csua, and severing all other ties to the online portion of the Computer Science Undergraduate Association. I expect these connections will never be restored. Nicholas C Weaver You should not leave. I agreed that sometimes the posting on MOTD and WALL is quite offensive. But I suggest you to take a more proactive approach -- instead of letting the soda online environment affect you, why don't you do something to change it?! I really think we should stop the flamming and use of dirty language in MOTD and WALLING! -bkong \_ If you are not a cower, leave your name here! what a cower! \_ Yer mom! \_ I PARTIED WITH NICK WEAVER!!!!! \_ I raved with Nick Weaver \_ I listened to Nick Weaver's lab partners ask me if it would be acceptable to throttle him. -John \_ I broke supermagnets in Nick Weavers kitchen, with Nick Weaver- danh \_ I reported Nick Weaver to the OSC - ikiru \_ I went to Bondage-A-Go-Go with Nick Weaver \_ I went goth dancing with Nick Weaver \_ I was in 'Nam with Nick Weaver \_ I partied with Nick Weaver in CS150. \_ I party with nick weaver in cs150 all the time now. \_ I made special brownies with Nick Weaver \_ AHA!! So CSUA is the culprit! Boy, I always knew it! I admit that I have been growing increasingly hostile online as well, especially on some e-mail mailing lists. When I was a newbie I was really nice, and then I'm not, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I changed. Little did I realize that after every login, the motd would fly into my eyes and burn in my brain, subconsciously, of course, so that when I would check my mail, I would respond with such venom in order to release the negative energies pent up by said motd. I forget how not to show the motd upon login, sigh.. --pcjr \_ yer _still_ a newbie, ya twit. \_ next time i will get big gnarly dudes to mug pcjr - danh \_ I'll do it --Mongo \_ If this is a prank, it is a great one. I think that soda encourages every member of the community to understand each others behavior. When you begin to understand the inherent contradictions in the world, you become less two dimensional and less "nice" because nice is not so clear anymore. Growing up is a painful thing to do, but I encourage it. -ausman \_ this message brought to you by a guy who dreams of having sex with a search engine - danh \_ PHUQING PHOLLOW YER OWN ADVICE PHIRST, REMO. --HAM \_ oh Dennis, there you go again bringing class into it. -ali (or something) I'm very happy that nick is leaving. He is an idiot and should figure out how to change his personality and learn how to treat his friends. \_ If you have guts, leave your login name! Don't just flame people. Everyone's learning and it's pointless to call other people idiot while you are learning yourself also. - ivy \_ Nick is hardly an idiot. He is socially inept, often rude, and sometimes annoying, but he is certainly not an idiot. As such I think he would make a good employee, though not much of a friend. \ i am good worker drone. \_ good employees can talk to people, i.e. are socially adept \_ Sheesh. No wonder Nick wants to get away from the CSUA. With a defense like that... I like Nick a great deal, actually. And yes, he is very smart. -brandy \_ He may not be an idiot, but he's definitely a twink. \_ I didn't like Nick, but I like him a lot more now that he has made this statement. Ausman: What "nice" is seems very clear to me. It means not insulting people constantly for no reason. It means not doing things that can hurt other people's feelings. Here's another vote against all the flaming. -kanon \_ Fuck you. -John Comment on the whole thread: I'm sure nick is really sorry to leave behind so many compassionate and understanding friends of his, who never use curse words treat people with respect, and never, never write anything mean or childish in the motd. -PeterM I think nick found a gurl. \_ maybe he found a guy! \_ maybe he bought a snazzy sports car, or took up netrek or something Nick had another choice.... he could have simply avoided reading the walls \_ Nick had choice or choice had Nick ? Inq. minds want to know. \_ another choice ?! Oh shit... and only checked out the motd now and then to keep up with events in general. There's nothing that says anyone has to be involved directly with the online crap on a daily basis just because they have a soda account. I think Nick's decision was way overblown. Posting to the motd was just a dramatic gesture he knew was bound to start the sort of flame war he claims he is trying to avoid in his own life. The whole thing is really ridiculous. The wall thing is ridiculous. The logs are ridiculous. People trying to squish each other over nothing all the time is ridiculous. A public motd is ridiculous. I doubt it will happen, but the CSUA needs to think seriously about what sort of .org it wants to be and then actually do something towards that end. The current CSUA is extremely random and undirected. Despite what some may think, chaos is *not* a good thing. Similarly, people who post things in contradiction to the politburo should be squished. All citizens of the US should carry passes at all times and their homes should be subject to search. All files should be inspected and if the owner cannot prove that the files are for the good of the state they should be shot. CSUA is not a club for the enjoyment of its users, it is an institution and should be respected and feared. The master race will rule the world. soda is an experimetn in anarchy. fuck off -cypherpunk Soda is a piece of hardware and old hardware at that. Save yourself. -- It looks like a bathouse 'cause it's tiled and green SO-SO-SODA, S-O-D-A SODA, SO-SO-SO-SO-SODAAA -- (kane) Soda is my personal kingdom, full of my undying slaves condemned to server me as the eternal undead. - danh \_ Happy happy haiku. 7/23 If you would like to see the CSUA not give away a nice new machine that would make a *MUCH* better and *MUCH* more reliable web server than the current very broken machine being used for these services, mail politburo@csua and say "Don't give the new web server away!" \_ I think the csua has plenty of machines, but most of them are crap I wouldn't inflict on anyone. -danh \_Or, consider actually finding out what's going on before doing something you really don't know much about. \_ so post the mail to http://ucb.org.csua or a /usr/local/csua file so people CAN find out about it \_ Better yet, attend the sunday politburo meeting. \_ Maybe it should be announced so people know about it (and people are much more likely to show up if you tell them what's going to be discussed so they know it's not just a "sit around and waste time" meeting) \_ but all politburo meetings are a waste of time! \_ I've been reading the Motd for years, and in all that time I've never read anything that has pissed me off enough to waste other peoples time by adding to the Motd. The proposed alternate use of the computer in question is a good one, worthy of CSUA support. If somone feels that CSUA members should not support this position there are appropriate forums (as explained above). Asking CSUA members to mail politburo in support of a position without even attempting to explain it is insulting to us all. WE ARE NOT SHEEP! -diran \_ baaaaa \_ And mail stoptien@asucb.org while you're at it!!!!1!!!!1!!! WE SHALL NOT BE OPPRESSED!!1!!! \_ I find it really weird that the CSUA wouldn't want to have such a nice solid machine for their own use. I can throw in an extra 6 gigs of disk and have the machine at the CSUA anytime you're ready for it. We used to use it as a file server and as a CPU server at a different time. It should easily handle all the ftp, DNS, www, and file serving functions of the csua. Why is the csua trying to bite the hands that feed it? This is the third donation from us, if you don't need this machine, then you won't need the 4th, 5th, 6th, etc donations either, I'd guess. Maybe its just because this is summer, but this isn't the sort of reaction I expected. (I certainly did *not* intend for this to turn into a csua flame war, sorry about that.) -reiffin \_ never underestimate the shortsightedness & stupidity of the csua |
