4/8 What's a good free e-mail provider? I don't want to use Gmail,
Yahoo, Outlook, or any of those sites with features I never use that
track my personal info and keep changing their interface. I want just
simple e-mail without privacy issues or all the baggage these large,
for-profit companies are adding. I might even be willing to pay.

9/4 It looks like there are some issues with wallall at the moment. Any
plans for it getting fixed? I can run wall, but wallall just gives an
        error.
\_ Asking questions on the motd will not get any attention from
any undergrad. You should email politburo or perhaps csua. -ausman

\_ The last time soda got reinstalled, the wallall modifications
didn't get brought forward into the new install. It seemed to be
a combination of a lack of awareness of its existence, and a lack
of interest. Seems to be part of the slow decline of the CSUA,
with respect to interaction between undergrads and alums. Oh well.

        still some jobs list?
\_ http://indeed.com and http://linkedin.com are great. Particularly the latter.
\_ Sorry, I meant for posting jobs for CSUA members. (My
              company's looking for interns.)

"The requested URL /~myname/ was not found on this server."
\_ Try emailing root or politburo. I don't think that the
undergrads use this machine anymore. -ausman
\_ Ausman is mostly right. LDAP went down due to an expired cert and
took down most of the rest of our stuff. It's probably a thing with
mounting and stuff. Email root@csua.org and ask them about the
status. If nothing's happening, check in.
\_ tried to mail root@csua.org, from soda.
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
                     root@csua.org

                Technical details of permanent failure:
Message rejected by Google Groups. Please visit

                Bulk Email Senders Guidelines.
\_ Mail has been officially deprecated as a feature for years.
This was widely announced via mail as well as motd for at
*least* a year. No effort will be spent trying to resolve a
spam rating issue caused by email abuse by some alumni, bad
.forwards, and so on. Treat soda mail as forward-only, and
assume the mailboxes on CSUA systems will go read-only at any
moment, even if there will be ample warning. While www has a
much rosier outlook for support, it's also a fact that it's
not utilized almost at all by students and recent alumni. To
get your complaint resolved you'll need to complain to
root@csua.org (email it from somewhere that actively supports
their email services), and check in to make sure someone's
                 making progress on it.

2/16 Time to restart this tired old discussion again. Who here would non-
anonymously join a CSUA web forum, were we to auth it against CSUA LDAP
and CalNet? Just trying to gauge alumni interest - and answer questions
(to the best of my knowledge*), should you have any, about the current
undergrad CS/CSUA for those that may be less in-touch. --toulouse
        * because I dropped out, but still live in Berkeley and keep in touch
\_ technically you're still an alum. alums are defined as anyone who
went to a school. (It gives the college a much wider net to cast
           for donations).
        \_ webforums aren't anon. :-(
\_ Online anonymous communities have a low TTC, or trend towards
one. IMO the ultimate result of "online" and "anonymous" is
4chan. I'm defining "online" to mean 'in the web browser' btw
              --toulouse
\_ there's a reason society has anonymous "we tip" hotlines
\_ Yes. What does that have to do with a CSUA forum? -tom
\_ 4chanism can be eliminated by the k5 method. All posts
are default denied and only posts that are voted good go thru
yes, this does mean you have to put time into developing the
content. But this is the only way.
\_ Or...you know, forget about anonymity and build a community.
\_ LOL, it's MR. GOP Talking Points on the MOTD
\_ Or you could just not be lazy and build a community
based on content, not one based on NAMEDROPPING.
\_ The K5 system works, is proven, and will continue to
solve the problem of content, without confusing the prob
with anonymity, free speech, etc. As a software guy
I like the idea of a Proper Solution to a Bug, not
some Blanket Marketing Hype solution. "zomg buy a WAF"
\_ But I want EZ Solutions 2 Hard Problemz! --GOP sodan
                          \_ Drill, baby, drill!
\_ I"ll follow you on twitter, brotha.
\_ Curious, do you go to every Cal Bears sporting game? Or devoutly
           run FreeBSD?
\_ I was barely aware of the superbowl. My FreeBSD computer just died
so I'm down to running just Ubuntu, Arch Linux, OS X, and Windows.
              --toulouse
\_ Why are you staying around Berkeley? Are you going to go back
                 to school?
\_ There's no reason for a CSUA forum to be anonymous; anonymity is,
in fact, the opposite of what the CSUA should be striving for. It
should be about connections between people, both at the undergrad
level and with alumni. I would join such a forum, and participate
if the discussions are interesting. -tom

I haven't been following the trend on csua. Thanks
\_ Apparently you haven't been following much of anything. Pine ceased
development four years ago, replaced by alpine. Mutt also works. The
mail spool is stored in Maildir format, not mbox format, fyi. With
regards to reading `whoami`@soda.berkeley.edu mail, you can use
IMAPS on <DEAD>mail.csua.berkeley.edu<DEAD> to access it, but mail hosting is
due to be shut down any month now, and switched over to forward-
only. tl;dr: the only long-term solution is to use a .forward file
and forward your mail to !csua.
P.S. If you have a CSUA problem then contact the CSUA. root@csua is
there for a reason. Nobody reads motd anymore, except on a lark.
\_ Thank you so much! Apparently I did have a .forward, one of the
reason I haven't paid much attention to the email clients on

5/6 A bit tardy, but please welcome our new politburo! Nathan Fair is very
diplomatic, and sharp to boot. He'll be an excellent interface for the
CSUA to the outside world. Mikey is reprising his role as VP. Samantha
Dove is our new Treasurer, and we hope that her penny-pinching will
serve us well. Angie is moving from Treasurer to Secretary, where she
plans to walk all over the hosers who mess up the office, rather than
the other way around ;). Finally, there is Jessica Pan for Events, who
has been doing her part running events behind-the-scenes already, and
will be responsible for keeping up the good work!

4/24 Why is soda being retired in ~70 days? What's going to happen
    to the physical box?
\_ What? Where did you get that information? Also, soda hasn't
physically existed for like a year or two now.
\_ Hmm, then what does "There are 71 days remaining" mean?
\_ No clue. Some random person having fun. We leave the text blob up
because what reason would we have to interfere and take it down?

\_ you know, AWS is so cheap these days, we should just host it
on AWS. Advantage: alumni can handle the sysadm job... it's

\_ You know, I think the csua should stay inside berkeley. and
              not be "amazon campus outreach".
\_ Seattle is nice I hear, how's Amazon paying you these days?
\_ Sweet you should just start up a host and not tell the undergrads.
\_ im not sure you know what you are talking about. Amazon bucket
storage is very cheap. Hosting VMs at Amazon, not cheap.
\_ An alumnus can technically handle the sysadm job now, because our
           machines are all virtualized anyway.
\_ Whoa. I had no idea. Who owns/runs the physical hosts?
\_ The VP. Who did you expect?
\_ Sorry, the syntax, "our machines are all virtualized" made
me think that CSUA no longer owned physical machines, just
VMs hosted elsewhere. (Hey, UCB should build a cloud?)

           \_ Nothing.
\_ Who is moving into the current CSUA space?
\_ It'll become an administrative office for two people. The new room
              will become a fire hazard.
\_ Waah waah. Dude they need space. Why is that so hard to
                 accept?
\_ Because according to another professor, due to groups
moving to CITRIS (Dai Hall), and fairly major department
staff layoffs, there is /not/ a space crunch.

    \_ Who is it? Let's email him/her/it.
          \_ Professor Sequin
\_ That would be a bad idea. He doesn't like the CSUA and he has the
power to do it, so I don't think alumni could help by talking nicely.
\_ We could email the alumni association and tell them that the
main reason we give to the school is because of the CSUA. Are
you going to get another office? -ausman
\_ Yes. It will be 80% the size of our old office, and < 50%
of our current office. Calculations say that it will be a fire
hazard given our level of membership. It's keypadded so it may
mean we can't have an open door. It has a toilet that the
janitorial staff does not clean, and no door to Soda proper.
It's the former help desk 'not a help desk' room. 337 will
become an administrative office for two people.
\_ That's the old XCF office. What happened to 343?
\_ It'll still be ours, but the question of whether it
can be reverted to the CSUA office is in the air. In
the case we can't, we'll probably still have to supervise
it, from across the building. Fucking astounding.
\_ The old XCF office is probably a lot more
reasonable for what the CSUA does these days.
\_ I disagree. What do you think the CSUA does

12/9 A new politburo has been elected. --t
\_ I'm glad at least you guys could fill all seven offices this time.
Its really a shame that the amendment failed, the politburo is
too heavyweight at 7 officers (some of whom are so superflous,
there is little need for them to give a crap). I wish you guys
had proposed the amendment in a way that might actually convince
some people rather than "hey, so we want to do this." -mrauser
\_ hey, is it kosher to top-post like this? anyways, I dunno, if we
have enough officers to fill the 7 spots (as we did), I'd rather
have the larger offices. Part of my consideration in voting
against (I was initially for) was that I wanted to pull some more
people in to the CSUA, and so we can rely on others if some of us
happen to be busy (especially since 3/7th of Politburo will be in
              CS150). --t
\_ You have been here for a week, don't start becoming a format
nazi. I find it astounding that you voted down the amendment
seeing as I could not find a single place where you voiced
any dissenting opinion to it. Why didn't you voice your
concern instead of silently hoping for failure. The concern
you gave was the original reason for the amendment but it
completely failed. Do you not remember an entire semester
where steven held two offices because you couldnt find a
single person who could act as events director? The rationale
for the amendment is clear from your description. Right now
the "larger" offices are the offices taking up the majority
of the responsibility and work burden for the csua. The
amendment would have left you with positions with more
balance between them instead of the large disparity now. -mr
\_ I've been here for two weeks, at least. Also, I have no
obligation to email you when I change my opinion, but FYI
I did talk with other members of politburo about this,
outside of politburo. That I sent out the email surveying
possible candidates for each of the position should indicate
to you (after the fact) that it wasn't a sudden decision,
and (though it's also not something I'd email you about) I
CSUA members for intent to run should indicate to you
(after the fact) that it wasn't a sudden decision, and
(though it's also not something I'd email you about) I
okay'ed it with a few politburo members. And of course I
took into account Steven's dual-position. Do you think I'm
an idiot? To me, balance was not really the issue; if
anything the low-stress positions such as librarian and
secretary are IMO a good gateway for members to test how
much they want to involve themselves in managing CSUA
affairs. It's why I ran for secretary in the first place.

12/4 Maybe you should have the CSUA initiate an ongoing CS project it could
be known for, and thereby have more of a raison d'etre for the hardware
choices. For example a game development thing open to any and only
members. It could perhaps offer experience/tutelage in more practical
aspects of CS than the academic stuff, but not just pointless IT
exercises like you guys seem to be focused on now.
\_ Not a bad idea, but last time we started projects, they died from
           neglect. --toulouse
\_ So do something small. Get an ipod touch and have an iphone
development contest. Give people 1 month to come up with
something cool and give away the touch to the top prize.
The CSUA should be all about getting people interested in
CS. There was a time when "having a unix computer that was
on the internet" was a good way to give people an incentive
to learn about cool computer stuff. That day is long gone.
\_ The lottery scheduler was the last project I remember. What
              other projects were there? -crufty-alum
\_ Didn't help the XCF. (RIP)
\_ Well, maybe their project and club is too boring. CSUA starts
from being a social club; a project like this would have to
be lightweight enough to keep people interested as an aside from
their school work. I don't think some OS research project is
              appropriate, for example.
\_ XCF had other problems, but honestly, CSUA is getting less
              and less relevant these days.
\_ Maybe you can start by organizing small groups interested in
contributing some feature to an open source project. People working
alone or towards a non-well-defined goal tend to be unmotivated.

5/2 Is the CSUA office moving?
\_ Yes. Although the CSUA office appears to be located in a static
position on the surface of the earth, the earth's surface is in
constant motion as the very thin plate of rock the office rests on
shifts across a giant ball of magma. The earth itself is spinning
at roughly 24 mph. It is also moving around the nearest star, we
call The Sun, at a rate of one revolution per approximately 365
days. At roughly 93 million miles in a slightly elliptical orbit
we leave it to the reader (or google) to find out how fast that is.
The Sun is moving through the Milky Way galaxy once per 64 million
years while the galaxy itself is on a collision course with another
nearby galaxy. But don't worry about that. Long before this
galaxy collides with another thereby destroying the CSUA office,
the molecules of the office itself will be reabsorbed into the
Great Soup Of Stuff that the universe is made of and long forgotten

4/24 Is it cool that Politburo is spending $600 on XBox 360, even if it is
ASUC money? How about hardware that doesn't crash instead.
\_ Video games are a huge recruiting resource. While I agree it'd be
nice if soda wasn't probabilistic, having an xbox 360 in the office
probably brings in more new members than anything to do with soda.
\_ Do XBox 360s crash? They may be doing just what you suggest.
\_ Seriously. Regardless of changes in youth culture, you can't put
"played video games" on yer resume. I always thought there was an
educational mission implicit in the CSUA's activities.
\_ Nor can you put "ate food at bbq". Clubs are clubs. Social
events are part of the club. A video game system in the
office is a social thing. Previous generations had a snes
and a ps2, this is about the same.
\_ I have always viewed the CSUA primarily as a social
organization; the goal should be to build community.
Game-playing can be part of that, and game-playing has
certainly been a large part of the history of the CSUA,
dating back to netrek/nethack/griljor, not to mention
the Risk tournament. I do think that the organizaton
needs to accomplish more than it currently is to earn
the credibility to spend a bunch of money on a game
system. If the CSUA is viewed as "that office where
geeks just sit around playing Xbox," and the basic
business of the organization isn't being taken care of,
it could lead to serious problems with the CS department
                    and with the ASUC. -tom

4/13 Yes, tom can be obtuse, but he's not the only one wondering why soda
isn't reliable, why mail isn't reliable, why there aren't any help
sessions, why meetings aren't publicized, etc. etc. I realize the
csua has had fallow periods, but this seems unprecedented in the
10 years that I've been member. I realize that times have changed
a lot, but I would be sad if the institution that helped me so much
in my time at Soda were to wither and fall away. !(dans || tom)
\_ Frankly, every alum assumes that because soda is not being
administrated well that the students are not being served. This
is not the case. Sadly, by far the majority of new memebers will
never log into thier soda account. The machine is no longer a
"necessity" to new students, who all have one or more personal
computers powerful enough for thier needs.
The meeting publicity is a good point, and I've been talking to
polit trying to get them to be more proactive about getting the
word out. But the lack of visible publicity is not a good
indicator because events have been occuring. We put on at least 3
helpsessions in the first few weeks as well as 2 general meetings,
a video game tournament, broomball, movie nights etc. Things are
happening, the club is not coming to an end.
We are going to work toward making soda more reliable. At the
moment, there are very few people helping the VP out, and he is
overburdened with the enormity of being responsible for fixing all
of the current issues. That is going to change, which will
hopefully result in better stability and usability for soda.
           -mrauser
\_ How can there be no one helping the VP out when there
are 7 politburo members? What is the role of the alumni
relations politburo position when there is no one
relating to the alumni except to complain about them?
Do you really think that current students don't need to
have information available on the CSUA web page? (I see
that some contact info has been put up, after 5 months
of nothing being there--that's a start). -tom
\_ Sadly, the current feeling is that whenever there is a
problem with soda, its the VP's sole responsibility to deal
with it. It actually doesn't make sense for the other
members of politburo to be co/assistant VPs, because they
each have job responsibilities that need to get done. But
right now, darch isn't recieving very much support from
root staff, because most of them are so jaded and
disgruntled that they don't wish to help out (except mconst
who is saintly in his patience).
As far as I can tell, the two alumni and industry relations
officers have done very little at all. This is a result of
us not having a good person for the job and just needing it
                 filled.
I think the website is a huge resource which right now the
current politburo is wasting. But, seeing as I am not on
politburo, its not my job to fix thier screw ups. I have
mentioned this to them many many times, so they know abou it,
but apparently its not a large enough priority to restore it's
functionality. Whats even worse than the website, is lately
minutes of meetings have not been taken. Both of these
issues are a function of the elected secretary just flaking
out and quitting about a month into the semester (what caused
that might have been _my_ bugging him about the website).
I don't mind answering your questions, but I've already
served 4 semesters on politburo and I want to let the current
group make thier own decisions/mistakes, though I try to
influence them in the right direction (by pointing out errors
                 like not taking minutes). -mrauser
\_ Do you really think your apparent outrage, damnation with
faint praise, and general tone of condescension help matters?

3/30 I've been in CSUA for roughly 14 years, and during most of that
time (13 yrs) it has been a stable environment. It's only been the
past year or so where it's been having a bunch of issues. Is there any
reason why now? Did CSUA lose funding? Admin Support? Or something
that drove it into the unstable environment it is today? I know it's
been a quasi-volunteer effort, so I appreciate the attention it has

\_ too many new hot cs girls? no time to be a geek
\_ too many mmorpgs, no time to be a unix geek. Seriously, in
recent years I've noticed that fresh grads are far less
interested/knowledgeable about unix than in the late 90s
and early 2000s. Even the ones who run Linux are way to
dependent on guis and point and click. I think that the
world has moved on and we crusty old geezers have been
              left behind.
\_ Great, this week I've been called a "crusty old geezer" and

                 eBay.
bought a walkman I used at Cal now labeled "vintage" on eBay.
\_ On my 31st birthday I was asked how it felt to be
a member of the AARP by an undergrad. It was ment
as a joke, but still being around kids who were
barely alive when 4.4BSD was released makes one
feel OLD. I wonder what it will feel like when
they start playing U2 on the "oldies" stations.

where I run IMAP. :) -dans
\_ In the past (1997) when I used IMAP, it would mark my messages
as "read" when I read them on my client machine. I don't like
this, I like to have the messages as two distinct instances, one
on Soda and one on my home machine. If I read it on my client I
want it to still show and unread on Soda. Also, IMAP is more for
people with always on connections, which I don't have. That's
why I prefer offline processing (Pop) vs interactive processing
              (IMAP).
              \_ Hmm, I don't understand why you'd want things you've read not
to be marked as read, but if that's how you work, more power
to you. It's worth noting that many modern IMAP clients, eg
OS X's Mail.app, have excellent offline modes, which serves
the same purposes as POP, but with IMAP's richer semantics.
