4/12 So what happened to soda? I see nothing in Official. \_ yeah, wha'appened? \_ I heard soda had a power outage --scotsman \_ Campuswide power outage, haas isn't even back yet. - pst \_ it wasn't campuswide. at least some parts of south side had power the whole time. \_ That's why I couldn't get to the main http://www.berkeley.edu page either. \_ What type of machine is soda now? Does it have a UPS? \_ http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/computing/hardware/soda-mark-vi.html and no. - pst \_ A UPS that could last the 2 minutes it would take to do a clean shutdown and send an automated message to all logged on users about it might cost as much as $75. \_ Genuinely curious: how do you determine how long a UPS will support a machine off the grid? \_ A UPS should have a rating of AH (amp-hours) or WH (watt- hours). Also, mAH are milli-amp-hours. 1000mAH = 1AH. 1 Amp-hour at 120V = 120 Watt-hours. If your whole system is drawing 500 watts, it will stay up for 1 hour for every 500 watt-hours your battery has. Oh, also, the VA (volt-amp) rating tells you the maximum amount of power you can draw. Of course, having soda stay up doesn't help much when all the routers go down. \_ this is why you use apmd, and only get enough battery to shut soda down safely. As was said above, it's cheap and effective. --scotsman \_ The routers aren't on UPS?! \_ that would cost another $49.95 per router to survive through the length of most power outages. \_ I think your number is a bit low. Routers draw a LOT. Generally a good deal more than any tower case. \_ It all depends on the size of the router. My router at home is 20W, tops. \_ Hrm. Last I checked, we were talking about SODA. it was the dawn of the third decade of the CSUA, ten years after the XCF War. The Server-Talk Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another disk-space war by creating a place where students and alumni could work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of wall, /home away from /home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepeneurs, and wanderers. Files and programs stored in two million, five hundred thousand sectors of spinning metal, all alone in the machine room. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last, best hope for peace. 7/22 Looking for junior java developers. Limited job experience is a plus. /csua/pub/jobs/Snapfish.junior.java I asked and got more info: money isn't the issue. The reason for wanting a junior level person is they need someone junior enough who is willing to do junior level work and not quit as soon as a senior level job comes along. They don't want to underemploy someone. This is intended to be a good learning first/second job thing for the employee and a reliable, smart person to do stuff that needs to be done but no one else has time for right now. 6/4 'What's the point of all this? Berkeley really should be a really cool place to be a CS person, but it's usually not. If you're reading this book, it's probably *your* responsibility to help make Berkeley a cooler place to be. Even if you're just a CSUA member, or nonmember, and not an officer or anything. It is important that people do stuff that's for more than themselves, but the Berkeley computer science community I have been witnessing is stuck in a deadlock of mutual laziness and exhaustion.' - Jon Blow, from the CSUA log book \_ I think the above is perhaps the single finest exposition of what the CSUA should be about. -dans \_ Your webpage is hillarious. \_ The way you spell hilarious is hilarious. -dans \_ laziness and exhaustion? \_ whining aimlessly while trying to look like you care about something unimportant or nonexistent like the "Berkeley computer science community"? as soon as someone starts drooling about a 'community' that's a keyword trigger that tells you it's ok to tune out and think about something important. \_ Like, perhaps, expanding your pr0n archive? \_ That and anything else imaginable would be more meaningful \_ Wow, I pity your sad, lonely, self-loathing existence -dans \_ Wow, I pity your arrogant, sanctimonious, self-important existance. \_ Take a deep breath and repeat after me, "it's only school, it's only school, it's only school". If you need the csua to have some sort of great social meaning in order to bring meaning to your own life then well, nevrmind, this should be self evident. There's no such thing as the "Berkeley computer science community". Most "communities" don't exist. If they did they wouldn't require "work" to keep them going. Think about it, genius. \_ You, too, have missed the point. College, as an experience, should be more than a process of getting a good job. In blojo's POV, the CSUA should be part of a better, smarter, more inventive, more mind expanding computer experience. And ALL communities require work to keep them going. \_ The CSUA has had this problem since XCF split off from UCF and the proliferation of affordable computing power. Without the need for machine access, the CSUA falls back on a social agenda. And since nerds by definition aren't social, it falls apart. Unless, as written by Jon, you can find a core group to hold it together and attract other likeminded people. \_ I see nothing falling apart. What's wrong with the CSUA? \_ Nothing really. It's just not a great hacker group. \_ why shouldn't be the CSUA be a social organization? Do you know how many people got married as a result of the CSUA? \_ Name all of the CSUA social events/activities. If there is a strong leadership, it's fine. They can drive them. If not, it all falls apart. If the CSUA can develop a core place for people to do computer nerd hacking, it becomes a social organization by default. The question has always been what does the CSUA want to do? \_ and how many marriages has BDG stopped? \_ He stopped mine. One must listen and obey. I repeat the daily invocation: T B T H! \_ what is TBTH??? \_ "The B&%#h took half!" \_ The OCF split off from UCF? When did this happen? Neat trick. \_ Oops. Too much drinking. It has been fixed... \_ I don't know about you, but I joined to get another e-mail address and shell account. \_ nononono, it's all about the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you code late into the night with other nerdlings and share tales of GNUvictory over those who would keep the information from being free! it's all about the Berkeley computer science community!! Do it for the kids! \_ blojo never said anything about a social agenda. -dans \_ You're right. But the CSUA becomes just a social club when there is no centralizing computing environment where likeminded nerds can hack code, talk about code hacks, and create stuff for world use/domination. So many CS nerds, so little code generation. \_ its what the WEB used to be for for undergrads. \_ Remember kids. It's only school. However important you think the CSUA and your CSUA 'friends' and just about anything else in school seems now it won't mean shit onec you've graduated, have a job, a wife/husband, a mortgage, car payments, and start thinking about what you're going to name your kids and if you'll raise them in a religion or not and which one. The CSUA is mere trivia at best. \_ I graduated a decade ago and the community of friends that I made in college is still the people that I spend time with, still the ones that I visit on vacation, still the ones that I live with and still the ones that I know will be there for me when I need them. I respect your choices, but you should not think that your way is the only way. \_ Did you ever leave Berkeley? Maybe you'd be better off with a more diverse group of friends. Sounds really inbred to me. \_ ditto. Most people i know/know_of are like that too. Probably something about the first people you know well when you are away from home, (or the first people you know after you are over age?) but there is definitely somthing about college-connections that seem to last. \_ For many folks, it's the last time they're exposed to a broad group of people. \_ The CSUA represents a broad group of people? \_ College. Retake that reading comprehension course. \_ College doesn't represent a broad group of people. It's 99% the 18-22 year old children of the wealthy or the educated. It's the elite of society, especially at Berkeley. We can all read. It's you that fails to comprehend. \_ So where do you get your "broad group" exposure? Does that mean joe+*@csua will go to joe? \_ joe+<SMTPALLOWEDSTRING>@CSUA goes to joe@CSUA \_ Do RFCs allow a plus in the user portion of address? \_ Yes. \_ Which one? \_ RFC 822, Sec. 3.3 The localpart is word *(.word) (their notation), according to sec. 6.1 of the same. 3.1 gives word as atom or quoted-string. Atoms are strings of chars except spaces, controls, and special chars. None of these three categories includes "+", so "+" is kept as part of the atom token. The modern mail RFC, 2822, gives a similar setup in its sec. 3.2.4, where atom is explicitly 1*atext, with atext defined to include valid chars, which are (quote): ALPHA / DIGIT / ; Any character except controls, "!" / "#" / ; SP, and specials. "$" / "%" / ; Used for atoms "&" / "'" / "*" / "+" / "-" / "/" / "=" / "?" / "^" / "_" / "`" / "{" / "|" / "}" / "~" ...And in all cases, it is left up to the system to interpret localpart any way it likes. Note that a lot of MTA's _will_ break on some of those characters even though the RFC doesn't make them illegal. \_ more flexible is something like virtual hosting username.domain.tld and forwarding all mail to that smtp virtualhost to username@domain.tld, letting you having spamtag@username.domain.tld. \_ qmail does this better. arbitrary hierarchies and easy processing. and hyphen looks nicer than plus. --aaron |

6/21 There are songs about SF, NYC, LA, etc. Are there songs about Berkeley? You're confused about what Berkeley is all about. No one in Berkeley actually *does* anything of any note, they just *talk* about it a lot and sometimes carry signs. Why would anyone bother to write a song about Berkeley? Would it be a take off on the "I left my heart in SF" song? Like so, "I left my 3 sheets and my bong in Berkeley!" Nah... doesn't work. Are you one of those dim-witted, hyper-sensitive conservatives? \_ Yawn. 2/26 It's almost impossible to find out how to break into soda machines. What is this world coming to? \_ so, was that info ever available? \_ yes. \_ oops got it. thought you meant the computers (machines) in soda hall. \_ I wonder if it's still possible to do what we did a lot in HS, which was fill a squirtable bottle (dishwashing soap, etc) full of really salty water and just shoot that shit in every hole and press all the buttons and the coin return over and over until shit started to short circuit and coins and sodas started falling out of it. Best time ever was when somehow we blew out all the lights in the Menlo Park train station somehow. But yo, WE NEED CASH LIKE ANYONE. \_ Yeah, right. 11/15 DNS PROBLEM. CSUA staff, can you please check the external DNS? only the www.csua.b--- is working. http://soda.berkeley.edu is not. thanks! \_ This has been expected for years. CSUA does not officially "own" http://soda.berkeley.edu.
