\_ Question: is there any reason the CSUA doesn't have a cafepress
store for these t-shirts? I'd be interested in one except I'm an
           alumnus and nowhere near Berkeley.
\_ cafepress doesn't offer black t-shirts, for one thing.
              \_ RACIST!
              \_ RAPIST!
                 \_ what?
\_ whatever happened to the price list design shirt that was going
           to be on cafepress?
\_ Me too. Is there a way to buy one if I live 2000 miles away?

I'm sorry, but there are people here who should not be on soda,
regardless of the donations/help/etc they give us. We're whoring
        ourselves and breaking our principles.
\_ Since when has the CSUA had principles? Really, by school
rules even allumni shouldn't have accounts. I mean, really,

4/12 \_ um, whatever happened to the Soda alumni donation thing? My
guess is that most of them got cheap and paid... ZELO DOLLAH!!!
\_ I think what happened is that the students got picky. The
recent thread where it was said CSUA needed 40 terabytes of
disk, an LTO2 tape silo, and 14 3.6 GHz CPUs (or something
almost as ridiculous) turned me off.
              \_ amen, brother.
\_ me too. current offers of alum donations that are being
sniffed at and turned away as useless crap are way way better
than what was available for real class work, in the labs, or
previous incarnations of soda when we were students. you
don't need hundreds of top end cpus, peta bytes of storage
and 10 gigabit switches to run a student login, motd, wall,
and smtp/imap/pop box. if there weren't so many snotty
greedy unappreciative brats here there'd be more alum help.
\_ while we'd like what you've listed above, as i've said
here before, we'll take whatever we can get that is better
                    then what we've got. erikk
\_ Hey asswipe, I gave $500 last time the CSUA passed the hat
and would do it again, if the Politburo would get its stuff
together and make a proposal. -alumnus
\_ Curious, did anyone even thank you? I got zippo thanks for
my last donation. -never again alum
\_ well, i can't do much about the past, except to thank
you and everyone else who has donated to the csua.
ideally, we'd have a well run donations system. but
such a system takes time and we can't seem to scrape
up enough of that to handle something like the faculty
retreat as well as i would like to. i know its a tired
excuse, but its the truth. erikk
\_ No, but I would still give again.
\_ where can we get a list of the donation record? I'd like to
see something similar to opera where there's a sheet of top
X million $ donations, followed by Y million $ donations, etc for
           building/funding the opera house.
\_ Top donor gets their name stenciled onto the CSUA bat in gold
letters. Second highest doner gets their name spelled out in
slices of pepperoni on the next pizza given away at a General
              Meeting.
\_ Third prize is, you're fired.
\_ I contacted the VP who posted to the motd, and asked him to keep
me updated on when they had specified a plan (via the motd and
email), and I'd donate at that point. Haven't heard back yet...
\_ if you're not Donald Trump, they don't want to hear from ya
\- Just out of curiosity, why does the CSUA need money?

4/12 So what happened to soda? I see nothing in Official.
        \_ yeah, wha'appened?
\_ I heard soda had a power outage --scotsman
\_ Campuswide power outage, haas isn't even back yet. - pst
\_ it wasn't campuswide. at least some parts of south side
                 had power the whole time.
              \_ That's why I couldn't get to the main http://www.berkeley.edu
                 page either.
\_ What type of machine is soda now? Does it have a UPS?
           \_ http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/computing/hardware/soda-mark-vi.html
              and no. - pst
\_ A UPS that could last the 2 minutes it would take to do a clean
shutdown and send an automated message to all logged on users
about it might cost as much as $75.
\_ Genuinely curious: how do you determine how long a UPS will
support a machine off the grid?
\_ A UPS should have a rating of AH (amp-hours) or WH (watt-
                    hours). Also, mAH are milli-amp-hours. 1000mAH = 1AH.
                    1 Amp-hour at 120V = 120 Watt-hours. If your
whole system is drawing 500 watts, it will stay up for 1
hour for every 500 watt-hours your battery has.
Oh, also, the VA (volt-amp) rating tells you the maximum
amount of power you can draw.
Of course, having soda stay up doesn't help much when all
                    the routers go down.
\_ this is why you use apmd, and only get enough battery
to shut soda down safely. As was said above, it's cheap
                       and effective. --scotsman
\_ The routers aren't on UPS?!
\_ that would cost another $49.95 per router to survive
through the length of most power outages.
\_ I think your number is a bit low. Routers draw
a LOT. Generally a good deal more than any
                             tower case.
\_ It all depends on the size of the router.
My router at home is 20W, tops.
\_ Hrm. Last I checked, we were talking about

it was the dawn of the third decade of the CSUA, ten years after the XCF War.
The Server-Talk Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another
disk-space war by creating a place where students and alumni could work out
their differences peacefully. It's a port of wall, /home away from /home for
diplomats, hustlers, entrepeneurs, and wanderers. Files and programs stored
in two million, five hundred thousand sectors of spinning metal, all alone
in the machine room. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last, best
hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the soda workstations. The
year is 1997. The name of the place is Soda Mark V.

a loud buzzer that would sound off when some asshole pees on

\_ While I think it's really lame technically and socially, from
the perspective of exposure and media coverage, it is a BRILLIANT
idea. MIT realizes that technology is only a small part of what
make a product or a company or a school great, and they do a
really good job reaching out to the public. I just wish that
Berkeley could be more detail oriented and be as good as MIT.
\_ Berkeley is above such things. If you were concerned with the

I asked and got more info: money isn't the issue. The reason for
wanting a junior level person is they need someone junior enough who
is willing to do junior level work and not quit as soon as a senior
level job comes along. They don't want to underemploy someone. This
is intended to be a good learning first/second job thing for the
employee and a reliable, smart person to do stuff that needs to be
done but no one else has time for right now. They expect/hope the
candidate will stick around long term and become senior in time.
\_ What if you've been unemployed so long you've fallen
from senior to junior. Like you've had a concussion. Is that OK?

cool place to be a CS person, but it's usually not. If you're reading
this book, it's probably *your* responsibility to help make Berkeley a
cooler place to be. Even if you're just a CSUA member, or nonmember,
and not an officer or anything. It is important that people do stuff
that's for more than themselves, but the Berkeley computer science
community I have been witnessing is stuck in a deadlock of mutual
laziness and exhaustion.' - Jon Blow, from the CSUA log book
\_ I think the above is perhaps the single finest exposition of what
the CSUA should be about. -dans
           \_ Your webpage is hillarious.
\_ The way you spell hilarious is hilarious. -dans
           \_ laziness and exhaustion?
\_ whining aimlessly while trying to look like you care about
something unimportant or nonexistent like the "Berkeley computer
science community"? as soon as someone starts drooling about
a 'community' that's a keyword trigger that tells you it's ok
to tune out and think about something important.
\_ Like, perhaps, expanding your pr0n archive?
\_ That and anything else imaginable would be more meaningful
\_ Wow, I pity your sad, lonely, self-loathing existence -dans
\_ Wow, I pity your arrogant, sanctimonious, self-important
                    existance.
\_ Take a deep breath and repeat after me, "it's only school,
it's only school, it's only school". If you need the csua
to have some sort of great social meaning in order to
bring meaning to your own life then well, nevrmind, this
should be self evident. There's no such thing as the
"Berkeley computer science community". Most "communities"
don't exist. If they did they wouldn't require "work" to
keep them going. Think about it, genius.
\_ You, too, have missed the point. College, as an
experience, should be more than a process of getting a
good job. In blojo's POV, the CSUA should be part of a
better, smarter, more inventive, more mind expanding
computer experience. And ALL communities require work
                       to keep them going.
\_ The CSUA has had this problem since XCF split off from UCF and
the proliferation of affordable computing power. Without the
need for machine access, the CSUA falls back on a social agenda.
And since nerds by definition aren't social, it falls apart.
Unless, as written by Jon, you can find a core group to hold it
together and attract other likeminded people.
\_ I see nothing falling apart. What's wrong with the CSUA?
\_ Nothing really. It's just not a great hacker group.
\_ why shouldn't be the CSUA be a social organization? Do you
know how many people got married as a result of the CSUA?
\_ Name all of the CSUA social events/activities. If there is
a strong leadership, it's fine. They can drive them. If
not, it all falls apart. If the CSUA can develop a core
place for people to do computer nerd hacking, it becomes
a social organization by default. The question has always
been what does the CSUA want to do?
\_ and how many marriages has BDG stopped?
\_ He stopped mine. One must listen and obey.
                       I repeat the daily invocation: T B T H!
                        \_ what is TBTH???
                           \_ "The B&%#h took half!"
\_ The OCF split off from UCF? When did this happen? Neat
                 trick.
\_ Oops. Too much drinking. It has been fixed...
\_ I don't know about you, but I joined to get another
                 e-mail address and shell account.
\_ nononono, it's all about the warm fuzzy feeling you get
when you code late into the night with other nerdlings
and share tales of GNUvictory over those who would keep
the information from being free! it's all about the
Berkeley computer science community!! Do it for the kids!
\_ blojo never said anything about a social agenda. -dans
\_ You're right. But the CSUA becomes just a social club
when there is no centralizing computing environment where
likeminded nerds can hack code, talk about code hacks, and
create stuff for world use/domination. So many CS nerds,
                    so little code generation.
\_ its what the WEB used to be for for undergrads.
\_ Remember kids. It's only school. However important you think the
CSUA and your CSUA 'friends' and just about anything else in school
seems now it won't mean shit onec you've graduated, have a job, a
wife/husband, a mortgage, car payments, and start thinking about
what you're going to name your kids and if you'll raise them in a
religion or not and which one. The CSUA is mere trivia at best.
\_ I graduated a decade ago and the community of friends that
I made in college is still the people that I spend time with,
still the ones that I visit on vacation, still the ones
that I live with and still the ones that I know will be
there for me when I need them. I respect your choices, but
you should not think that your way is the only way.
\_ Did you ever leave Berkeley? Maybe you'd be better off with
a more diverse group of friends. Sounds really inbred to me.
\_ ditto. Most people i know/know_of are like that too.
Probably something about the first people you know well
when you are away from home, (or the first people you know
after you are over age?) but there is definitely somthing
about college-connections that seem to last.
\_ For many folks, it's the last time they're exposed to
                    a broad group of people.
\_ The CSUA represents a broad group of people?
\_ College. Retake that reading comprehension course.
\_ College doesn't represent a broad group of
people. It's 99% the 18-22 year old children
of the wealthy or the educated. It's the elite
of society, especially at Berkeley. We can all
read. It's you that fails to comprehend.
\_ So where do you get your "broad group"

according to sec. 6.1 of the same. 3.1 gives
word as atom or quoted-string. Atoms are
strings of chars except spaces, controls, and
special chars. None of these three categories
includes "+", so "+" is kept as part of the
atom token. The modern mail RFC, 2822, gives
a similar setup in its sec. 3.2.4, where atom
is explicitly 1*atext, with atext defined to
include valid chars, which are (quote):
ALPHA / DIGIT / ; Any character except controls,
                        "!" / "#" / ; SP, and specials.
                        "$" / "%" / ; Used for atoms
                        "&" / "'" / "*" / "+" / "-" / "/" / "=" / "?" / "^" /
                        "_" / "`" / "{" / "|" / "}" / "~"
...And in all cases, it is left up to the
system to interpret localpart any way it likes.
Note that a lot of MTA's _will_ break on some of
those characters even though the RFC doesn't make
                             them illegal.

10/29 Re: the earlier question about sftp, is there a reason why sftpd
isn't on for csua? Is there a known security issue with it?
\_ Oh, that's why it seems to hang when I try to sftp to soda from my
           Solaris box.

10/25 How do I do anonymous NNTP posting via tin from csua? I can
change my from email address, but tin still inserts a Sender line
which includes my full email and name. Thx.

10/22 oh my... is /csua/tmp/wathmorld.tar.gz really what I think it is?!!
\_ shut up, make a local copy, and forget where you found it. 20
years from now when the copyright cops become extinct, we can
           all celebrate...
\_ SWEET JESUS, I THINK IT IS! GOD HAS SMILED ON US!!
           \_ is this sarcasm?
              \_ sad
              \_ No.
\_ What does it seem to be? Math tutorial?
\_ It is just about one of the greatest resources for all
things math. I just can't believe that there is a copy
here on soda. Read this for the complete saga:

10/19 How do I reserve 306 Soda? I'd like to get a room to get a bunch of
people to study for the GRE. Thanks.
        \_ http://buffy.eecs.berkeley.edu/Resguide/CS/sodasched.shtml
( http://www.cs , then click on "Room Reservations")
\_ Make sure you press the "Login" button first, then go back to
that page and you'll be able to view current reservations for
all reservable Soda rooms. If you're looking for a place to do
a group study session, I strongly recommend against 306, which
is not set up for group interaction; try 310, 320, 373, 380,
405, or 606. On a somewhat related note, HKN has been running
some review sessions for the CS Subject Test; the last one is
this Thu at 6:30 in 306, for 170/172 material.

10/19 How do you take 101010, draw one straight line, and get 950?
        (answer in /csua/tmp/riddle.txt)
\_ hey these are FUN. Please post a new one every day.
\_ pardon my cluelessness, what sort of notaton is T?
\_ put a space after every second character and maybe you'll get it
\_ just curious, how many people actually got the answer?

10/9 The IP address renumbering for CSUA systems is mostly done.
The nameservers for http://Berkeley.EDU have not updated yet with the
new information, so DNS resolution of CSUA hostnames will be
problematic. A message will be posted here and on http://ucb.org.csua
when the update occurs. we hope you enjoy (but do not abuse)
        the increased network capacity. --root

10/9 http://soda.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU now has an ip address of 128.32.247.226.
it and scotch (aka ftp) were unreachable due to miswired connections
in the network closet from the network changeover. it may take a
while for new DNS information to get around. we hope you enjoy
(but do not abuse) the increased network capacity. --root
