China's Drone Swarms Rise to Challenge US Power View Photo China's Drone Swarms Rise to Challenge ... China is building one of the world's largest drone fleets aimed at expanding its military reach in the Pacific and swarming US Navy carriers in the unlikely event of a war, according to a new report. The Chinese military -- known as the People's Liberation Army (PLA) -- envisions its drone swarms scouting out battlefields, guiding missile strikes and overwhelming opponents through sheer numbers.
But the new Project 2049 Institute report estimates that China had 280 military drones as of mid-2011 -- a number that has likely grown since then. Chinese military drones have already entered the frontlines of China's territorial disputes with neighboring countries such as Japan by flying maritime patrols over disputed areas. The Project 2049 Institute report warned that China could be tempted to use drones more aggressively without risking human lives, or even consider "plausibly deniable" drone attacks blamed upon mechanical failure or cyberhackers. Chinese strategists have also discussed using swarms of drones to overwhelm the US Navy's carrier groups in the unlikely possibility of a shooting war. The drones could act as decoys, use electronic warfare to jam communications and radar, guide missile strikes on carriers, fire missiles at US Navy ships or dive into ships like kamikaze robots.

All the main branches of the Chinese military field operational drone units. The new report identifies those military units along with major academic, industry and military organizations involved in building Chinese drones. The report goes on to examine the state of Chinese drone technology. China is developing drones such as the rumored "Dark Sword" stealth drone that have low radar profiles to escape radar detection. It also wants to build "space" drones that could loiter at heights of 31 miles (50 kilometers) above the Earth to provide constant surveillance.

Jpakolypse 2 hrs 29 mins ago Attempting to overwhelm your enemy with superior numbers is lazy, unimaginative, and often times disastrous for the attacker. This is also a strategy that is not likely to succeed in air to air combat, given that current weapon systems allow American pilots to target multiple enemies at once.
they warn us regularly that they plan on and intend to take back Tiawan as they see it as stolen lands belonging to China. Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge of Chinese culture knows that the Chinese do not look at politics with the vantage point of what will happen in the next 4 years, but rather what they want to do in the next 400 years! the dragon will awaken when the time is right and the dragon will bite!

Soccer-Messi and Barca make a mockery of the doubters By Iain Rogers BARCELONA, March 13 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi's Barcelona gave an emphatic response to the doubters when they made Champions League history by overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to oust seven-times European Cup winners AC Milan on Tuesday. Messi's superb double set Barca on their way in the first half at a raucous but desperately tense Nou Camp and David Villa and Jordi Alba struck after the break to send the La Liga side through to the quarter-finals 4-2 on aggregate.
Why the First Latin American Pope Inspires Less Hope Than We Hoped I had long been aware that Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, Argentina's most powerful Roman Catholic prelate, was a priest who led a humble lifestyle that reflected his advocacy for the downtrodden. In Latin America, whose social inequality is one of the worst of any region in the world, that truly counted for something. It was refreshing, at a time when so many in the Catholic hierarchy were accused of having covered up clerical sexual abuse in order to protect their ecclesiastical fraternity, to see a prince of the church defending the underdogs of the world.
Soccer-Xavi's CV complete after historic comeback By Iain Rogers BARCELONA, March 13 (Reuters) - Barcelona playmaker Xavi said before Tuesday's Champions League showdown against AC Milan that the one thing missing from the current golden generation's curriculum was an historic comeback. The box was ticked off in memorable style at an electric Nou Camp as Barca kept their bid for a third European crown in five years alive by becoming the first team to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit without the benefit of an away goal.

GET THE HELL OUT OF AFGHANISTAN LOS ANGELES -- If you Google "Afghanistan," you get your choice of occupiers. "The British occupation began in arrogance in 1878 and ended in 1880 in massacre. The occupation by the Soviet Union ended in defeat and humiliation. The American occupation, officially an operation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, goes on and on toward another bad ending.
