format=embed&player_autoplay=false President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney clashed in an exchange about the size of the US military in what may end up being the signature dialogue of the third and final presidential debate. "Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917," Romney said. "The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. Romney also said the US Air Force is "older and smaller" than at any time since it first flew in 1947 and that the US has begun to move away from its traditional stance of being able to simultaneously fight wars on two fronts. "I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works," Obama said, beginning a sharp assault on Romney's foreign policy knowledge. "You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. "And so the question is not a game of Battleship," Obama continued, "where we're counting ships. As some observers pointed out, the remark may have added insult to injury, considering Romney is the owner of a horse that competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama shake hands at the end of the last debate at Lynn University, Monday, Oct.
Mitt Romney talks about his plan for creating jobs and improving the economy at McCandless International Trucks in Las Vegas. Now in 2012 the economy is weak and the job market brutal. the national unemployment rate is 81 percent, the highest level ever three years after a recession supposedly ended. " "On 9 July 2009, General James Cartwright, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, explained to the US Senate Committee on Armed Services his reasons for supporting termination of F-22 production. He stated that fifth-generation fighters need to be proliferated to all three services by shifting resources to the multirole F-35. He noted that commanders had concerns regarding electronic warfare (EW) capabilities, and that keeping the F/A-18 production line "hot" offered a fallback option to the F-35 in the EA-18G Growler. On 21 July 2009, President Obama threatened to veto further F-22 production.
On 21 July 2009, the Senate voted in favor of ending F-22 production. Secretary Gates said that the decision to end production was taken in light of the F-35's capabilities.
On 29 July 2009, the Air National Guard's director asked for "60 to 70" F-22s for air sovereignty missions, noting that these could lack capabilities such as ground attack.
Arthur 2 hrs 45 mins ago The bayonet quip would be sad if it wasn't such a distractor. Romney was pointing out that the smaller the military becomes the less it can defend vital interests. This is especially true of the navy, since the PRC naval forces are devloping into a "Blue Water" navy that can in the very near future block sealanes; while the Russians are rearming with modern equipment paid from the oil revenues that were developed by foreign funds before they were nationalized. Yes, the world is a far more dangerous place today than a few years ago, and downsizing the military will make it even more dangerous. Look at the 1920s and early 1930s and realize that the left and Islamists are preparing while we stagnant.
obozo has done his best to create a massive divide between every race in the USA. He ahs not worked to strengthen our country through collective help, but has done his best to bring about a racial war in the USA. Its just a matter of time as to when, and the one in the white house ahs the power to stop it, if he is for all the people and not just one group.
Vietnam Vet 2 hrs 12 mins ago Happy thanks for the disrespect. You are another of those who only support the troops who have the same politics as you. Be glad you are in America where we ALL have the right to our opinion even if you don't like it.
Garf 4 hrs ago Something that is not discussed is thin capitalization of foreign companies in the U S That is little capital equity and lots of debt. Dividends not taxable to the corporation but interest cost is deductible.
Jim o 15 hrs ago So if you would believe Eric Pfeiffer, Romney had no zingers, didn't come back, just sat there; another Yahoo "news" person that knew what they were going to write and so really didn't need to watch the debate.
Sean o 15 hrs ago You can play politics with it all you want but that is a 100% true statement. Did you know that Saddam Hussein once had the world's largest tank army? He had tens of thousands of T72s which were wiped out by our more modern armor. The kind of battleships we are designing today are worth 20 of what the Chinese are building, which aren't fit to float in a bath tub by comparison.
Trump: I have something very, very big concerning the president of the United States' Donald Trump, the real estate mogul, reality TV star and de facto leader of the "birther" movement, says he is planning a "big announcement" about President Barack Obama. "I have something very, very big concerning the president of the United States," Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Monday during a phone interview.
Pippa Gets Panned Pippa Middleton is kind of the best, right? If you don't like her for her famous booty, you like her because she's the sister who didn't get the prince, the party girl who has a good time regardless, the one who rolls her eyes at the camera whilst watching tennis matches with her proper married-lady sis. She's the Harry to Kate's William, and for that, we must love her. Further, speaking of that booty, she doesn't quite get why it got everybody so worked up.
Obama Wins Third Debate but Romney Wins Debate Season Mitt Romney wins. That's not to say he won Monday night's debate or the presidential campaign, but it's safe to say he won an important chapter: the debate season.
The New Gallup Numbers Are Out: Romney Up by 6 Mitt Romney leads President Obama by 6 percentage points among likely voters nationwide, according to Gallup's seven-day tracking poll. The result, 51 percent to 45 percent, is a small 1 point drop for Romney from Sunday. Among registered voters, the poll tightened more significantly, showing Obama just behind Romney 47 percent to 48 percent. The difference between the two findings is significant and the reason Obama's campaign has criticized Gallup.
