Alice H Berkeley, CA 40 star rating 8/25/2012 1 Check-in Here Tips: $7-8 for a BBQ meat dish comes with bean sprouts, kimchi, and white rice. I wouldn't dub Steve's as a very authentic Korean food place. Honestly I think the portion size could feed 2 people, they just give you that much. I always get the BBQ chicken and it's super awesome I highly recommend getting that meat combo. If you don't like bean sprouts like me, or you really love kimchi, you can ask for no bean sprouts and they'll double up the amount of kimchi they give you. Steve's is definitely the place to go if you're really hungry and you're just craving some meat and rice. Sure it's not the most authentic Korean food, but it's still good to eat! Pam M Danville, CA 50 star rating 8/18/2012 Hungry for meat? I get the #4 short ribs and it never fails to satisfy my craving. I rarely try the other options on the menu because this is my favorite meal in all of the Asian restaurants in the Durant Food Court. Friends of mine have tried the others and have never been disappointed. Service is quick and efficient, they cook it right when you order. If you don't like the sides (beans or kimchee) you can ask them to hold it and replace it with more plain rice instead. Located in the Asian Ghetto, it's one of my go-to places if I just need something meaty and filling. Meat portions are typically plentiful and come with some bean sprouts and kim chi and a good amount of rice. I say typically because there's always those occasional times when I take the box out of the bag and see a scant amount of meat and I get a little bit sad. Prices have risen a little bit the past few years I've been here, and now it's about the standard 7-8 bucks. Mike P Santa Cruz, CA 30 star rating 9/21/2012 Probably the best short ribs around if you don't care about your health. When I was a kid this place was fantastic but now that I'm all grown up and know better, the amount of fat on the ribs is kind of off-putting. Decent sized portions though, so if you're hungry and looking for some fast and tasty Korean BBQ, I'd definitely recommend Steve's! Emmanuel C Berkeley, CA 20 star rating 7/22/2012 1 Check-in Here I only ever really crave this place if I want cheap no-quality meat... However, I'd go maybe go just a few times a year at that. Sarah W Mountain View, CA 50 star rating 7/17/2012 One of my favorite places in the UC Berkeley area! I've only gotten the #1 from here, and I've never had a reason to switch. It's delicious, gives you a ton of meat and lots of rice (a savior for a rice-deprived dorm student like me), and is close to campus. Anyways, basically if you like marinated meat and lots of rice, this is the place to go. Mary T Hayward, CA 40 star rating 7/10/2012 3 Check-ins Here When we crave Korean BBQ and in the Berkeley area visiting my parents or hanging out in the area, this is where we go. It's definitely an older location that has been there for years on end and of course places like this could use a little remodeling and could use a little more cleaning. What you will see is a bunch of Mexicans who will cook up your Korean BBQ for ya and a whole lotta college students chillen in this small place and "the village." You will find that Steve's Korean is smack dab in the middle of a village of other food choices such as Vietnamese, Thai, etc. My favorite here would be the bbq beef platter either for there or to go. I always ask for extra bean sprouts and kimchi and they hook it up like nobody's business. I've always tried their grilled noodle dish, which is quite delish as well. Their Kalbi dish is bomb too, but be sure to have floss with you because that stuff will for sure get all up in your teeth. Of course I love the location even more because I can go next door to Sweetheart Cafe and pick up a boba drink to enjoy with my plate from here. Dexter A Mountain View, CA 50 star rating 7/8/2012 Although I graduated in 2005, when I visit Berkeley (usually twice a year), I make sure to check into Steve's BBQ for some short ribs! They're not overly marinated so the meat flavor goes though, and you get a pound or so of meat for $8! I wish there was a Steve's BBQ in Palo Alto, so that I could go there everyday. I think when I was actually at Berkeley, I didn't realize how good of a deal this place was... I mean in San Jose, you get similar quality of meat, over marinated (too salty, can't taste meat, etc) for quadruple the price (for the same amount).... Wayne N Austin, TX 20 star rating 5/31/2012 $1 to double the amount of korean bbq on your plate bought me in but after this, all I know is Steve sure ain't Korean. The bulgogi wasn't that flavorful, a bit bland honestly. It was just a lot of it, which I guess in a college town is all that matters. They were nice enough to let us move the chairs around to outside. I hear all the places in Asian Ghetto are about equal but at the price point it sure doesn't feel very asian or very ghetto. I've had cheaper in Austin for better taste, asian food wise. Greg G Alameda, CA 30 star rating 4/9/2012 On par with what you'd expect from student budget food, Steve's is A-OK. The portions are pretty decent, but the food itself lacks any significant flavor. The crowds of students that flood this place speak for itself though, as Steve's sure is popular. For around $8 I feel like there are much better deals within the Asian Ghetto area itself, especially if you're looking for an Asian inspired meal. Jenn Y Berkeley, CA 40 star rating 9/13/2012 This place is obviously not that authentic but they have huge portions and are cheaper than pretty much every other Korean place nearby. I pretty much always get the Korean BBQ (short ribs, or galbi) because the price is so cheap there with an ample amount of meat. I've had friends and family get other stuff on the menu before and from what I can gather, you should just go for the BBQ. Alex T Berkeley, CA 30 star rating 7/17/2012 spicy pork please! the flavor on the pork is really special, once you taste it your going to crave it. But be for warned, if you get the chicken or the beef that flavor won't be there. Greg H San Jose, CA 20 star rating 3/11/2012 1 Check-in Here What inspired me to walk into this restaurant was looking at the plate portions and the fact that it was a K-BBQ place but in hindsight I lightly regret choosing this place to eat lunch. Everything about this place seemed like your typical hole-in-the-wall restaurant (cheap, not a lot of people, slightly dirty) but I had high hopes when I saw that this place had BBQ chicken; I love anything BBQ and chicken is awesome too so by instinct I had to choose it. But reflecting back on the meal, it makes me regret choosing this place. After the first bite, I immediately regretted choosing the dish. I had to drench my entire plate with the red sauce to try and salvage my meal and make the dish more tasteful but, truth be told, any sauce should never overpower the meat's flavor; Otherwise I think I would've given up and not have finished my meal. I'm not usually a picky person when it comes to eating, but burned and tasteless chicken is definitely not what I expect when I think of K-BBQ chicken. Ethan N Colton, CA 40 star rating 3/4/2012 1 Check-in Here This place isn't somewhere you go for great Korean food by any means. It's trashy, it's cheap, it's filling, and it's consistent. It was one of my comfort foods when I went to Cal and it makes me happy every time I can get my hands on it. You get a giant pile of meat on a giant pile of rice with two small piles of kim chee and bean sprouts. Okay, the kim chee and bean sprouts aren't great, but I've had worse. The pork isn't always super tender and can have some connective tissue or chunks of fat at times. If you go to Cal then you already know about the Asian ghetto and have probably at least seen this place in the back. If it's late and you're really hungry then you can't do much better than Steve's. I know I'll come here every time I'm back for a bit of super filling and tasty nostalgia. Dana L Hanford, CA 20 star rating 3/13/2012 I used to really like this place. I always ordered the beef short ribs, and I always had e...

Since we're now "older", we need someplace nicer (no blondies, bongo burger or $1 chinese food). La Note has nice atmosphere, but the food is mediocre at best and not worth the money. Nann&Curry on Telegraph is a dive with really good Indian food for the cost. Take this with a grain of salt because I still like Bongo Burger and I'm "older" too. If you're going to a student pit like Intermezzo and think that is good food then I can't help you. How can you not know that BB is one of the better burgers available on this planet? Although hotdogs are really disgusting as a concept, I still eat topdog, too. You better guess again before complimenting them on their authentic "Ethiopian" food. The Eritreans and the Ethiopians just finished slaughtering each other by the tens of thousands over a single border town. BTW, I can barely tell the difference between Ethiopian and Eritrean and I've worked for the latter for 2-1/2 years. Ohh, but you get to sit on the ground all authentic like! There are tons of good ethiopian places in south berkeley and oakland. Good places include The Ethiopian Restaurant down on Telegraph and Russel (yeah it looks scary from the outside, but it is good), Cafe Calluci (probably spelled wrong) on Telegraph and Alcatraz and The Red Sea at Claremont and umm, something. Hint: Asmara and the Red Sea are geographical features of one country rather than the other (check a recent world atlas). Above comment about similarity of the food is, however, correct. I didn't notice Blue Nile was any different (better or worse). But, you don't have to go into Oakland and be scared by all them black folks.

BTW, there is a restaurant or two open near Ranch 99 pretty late. well, at least they're open pretty late \_ Which Ranch 99? and La Mediteranee (the Berkeley one is way better than the SF ones), Nakapan, Cheese Board Pizza, and of course Zach's. I regret it because my brother and his friends keep telling me how good (and cheap) it is. LB because it was so cheap and decent and open late, and IB's because it was cheap (at first neway) and it's not easy to find that type of hoagie. you will quickly realize, however that you have been screwd badly as far as fast food goes, though since all burritos are about ten dollars and totally suck. I miss little Chicago deep dish pizza in its prime as a competitor to Zachary's. It's still there on University, but they've gone downhill. Don't know about West Coast pizza as a favorite late night delivery hole (they operate out of the same kitchen). working life, aside from the money, hella sucks, don't you all think? i wish i could just work half the time for half the salary. They were about all I could afford as I was working to put myself through school. i guess i miss the silver ball and the comic book store that was across the street. I was about to walk into Blondie's when I bumped into my cousin. I asked her if she wanted get a slice of pizza at this place and she said she didn't care much for cockroach as a topping. Years later I was told by a friend that he found a cockroach shell in a slice of pizza from Blondie's and I was glad I never ate there. I had a glass of this "Sangria" at a restaurant a while back and it's the only wine I've had so far that I actually liked, rather than just tolerated. Granted, I don't drink wine that often anyway, so there may be plenty of wines I'd like that I've never had. Now if only the legislature could make all of my decisions. Oh, and pass a budget that spends less than it takes in. Thanks progressives for the new prohibition, 100 years after the last one.
