Maggie Hendricks Two mixed martial artists from Oregon were in Los Angeles for a grappling tournament, but they ended up using their skills to do much more than win a match.
They were walking through the hotel lobby when they saw the robber, who had gone behind the hotel's counter, pulled out a gun, and demanded money. Alvarez and Denney jumped on the robber, and while Denney controlled his wrists, Alvarez sunk in a rear naked choke.
Twisted Web Facebook page, Denney took third at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation no-gi worlds. No matter their results, I have a feeling that Denney and Alvarez will remember this trip to LA for something other than the tournament. Kudos to them both for being brave and using martial arts to do more than win a match.

Report Abuse Perhaps the police should learn some lessons from these guys... I was expecting to see a little Kung Fu but I'm impressed with these fighters' level of maturity. They could have laid him flat but instead they were even more professional about it than most COPS would have been.

I'm a sweet, friendly, honest, caring girl in search of "the one". it is the first and best club for wealthy people and their admirers. you don't have to be rich ,but you can meet one :) This reminds me of the baseball strike and Tom Glavin was pitching for the Atlanta Braves and also the spokesman for the league and was doing an interview for the striking players making multimillions of dollars, and said " The reason he was striking was to be able to feed his family". I do feel that a person should be able to make as much money as they can at their jobs. However, I think the man paying his salary should have the right to pay him an honest wage. I also believe that if the pro football players can't pay for their health insurance, a roof over their families head, grocery's on the table.... well then the last i heard was the 7-11 stores and walmart is hiring.

Report Abuse This is why learning self defense is important... Its not about being a hero, but protecting yourself and others from a dangerous situation. Best of luck in y'all competition there will definitely be people cheering y'all on.... I also believe police officers should be trained in martial arts as well...
Report Abuse Seriously, there were a total of 3 guys that apprehended the man. The Korean man clerk at the bank in Koreatown in LA grabbed the guy from the back and then the two MMA just subdued him. In real situations, if this was one on one then this would be a difficult situation. You have to really commend the Korean clerk for grabbing the guy from behind and he had his hands down so he couldn't have gotten the gun out of his pocket. You're staring to see these so called greatest champ getting owned because they don't know how to kick and punch. In real fighting situations, you have to be a well rounded fighter and be able to throw concise kick or punch and connect. It does good service if the other opponent does not know how to fight. But in real situations, you can endanger your life if you are not well rounded. Are you going to tell that other opponent to wait in line and hold a ticket number? Of course the guy is going to be subdued, there are three people grabbing him.

Report Abuse For all you idiots who think it's ok to rob someone with a gun to feed your family or for any other reason you definately woke up on the wrong side of your morals bed... When you have more care about the guy with the gun then the poor guy just doing his job to take care of his family you are definetley #@&!
