Computers 75 year-old woman disconnects 90% of Armenia's internet by accident A single, hapless Georgian woman near the border of Armenia managed to throw the latter nation into a full-fledged internet blackout for 12 hours on March 28. While hunting for valuable cooper wire near the village of Ksani, the septuagenarian damaged a fiber optic cable that piped the web to a whopping 90% of Armenia. Though odds are she didn't have anything against the neighboring country, the woman now faces a possible 3-year prison sentence for her actions.
Sep 4, 2011 at 6:06 AM Once again, John, you missed the joke. Geoff is using IRONY (specifically, the technique of "understatement") to make his point. His point is, of course, that there is indeed NO copper in fiber optic cable. It's like saying there's not a lot of air in outer space. No disrespect intended, but are you autistic or do you have Asperger's Syndrome? People with these conditions often fail to recognize social cues and take things people say literally. That perhaps would explain why you are not "getting" (understanding) these humorous and/or sarcastic comments.
Aug 24, 2011 at 6:26 PM Kristoffer: I must be missing something. Can you tell me just where, to use your words, "Soviet Russia" is? Unless you have read Pravda or Izvestia lately, you have not any idea of the liberalism of the press in the country of Russia. These magazines make The National Inquirer look super right wing conservative by comparison. There are plenty of liberal and conservative papers in all parts of the former USSR that produce better papers than a lot of the US papers. Take a look for yourself and see if I am not right on this.
Sep 4, 2011 at 5:52 AM Yes, John, you are missing something. In the 1980's (during the Cold War), comedian Yakov Smirnoff made a name for himself by telling one-liners in which he would make a comment about America vs. Russia, reversing the subject and object of the sentence for comedic effect. In those days, "Russia" was essentially synonymous with the repressive Soviet regime. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Mr Smirnoff now uses the phrase "in Soviet Russia" to refer to the infamous communist nation of the Cold War era, as opposed to the currently existing republic. So when Kirstoffer said "In Soviet Russia, the internet downloads you", he was parodying the well-known comedic format of Yakov Smirnoff.
