The Oregonian reports that a young woman from California has accused the Democrat of an unwanted sexual encounter last November. The newspaper said the information came from sources who wanted to remain anonymous. David Wu of Oregon has announced that he is resigning in the wake of allegations that he had a sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman. Democratic leaders had called for a House Ethics investigation after the initial reports of the allegation. Wu said Tuesday the well-being of his children should come first, so he will resign after Congress resolves the debate over the debt ceiling. In 2004, he won despite acknowledging a decades-old college incident in which he tried to force a former girlfriend to have sex. Voters said they disliked an opponent's attempt to use that against Wu as part of a political campaign. Michael 2 hours ago Let me get this right, he admitted that he attempted to sexually force a women into having sex with him but the "Voters said they disliked an opponent's attempt to use that against Wu as part of a political campaign." If he had tried to kill someone, would that have been okay to use against him? soupnazi 2 hours ago How many institutions or companies with just 535 members or employees have Congress' rate of resignations for sex scandals and other corruption? Shows how stupid voters can be, incidents like this are generally a good indicator of a person's character. BiancaG 2 hours ago Its a little disturbing that the news media is tip-toeing around the word rape. That is what this person is being accused of, but we don't call it that because he is a congressman. |

"The time has come to hand on the privilege of high office," Wu said in a statement. "I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations." Wu said that his resignation would be effective upon the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis. "This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues," he said. "It is also the only correct decision to avoid any distraction from the important work at hand in Washington." asked the House Ethics committee to investigate the allegations against the seven-term congressman. Last week's allegation against Wu is the latest in a series of charges that the congressman has engaged in questionable behavior. Wu acknowledged that he sent erratic emails to his staffers, including a picture of himself around Halloween in a tiger costume. Several of his staff members resigned following his re-election in November, and Oregon newspapers reported that his campaign staffers had pleaded with Wu to seek psychiatric help the week before the 2010 election. Wu said in February he has sought mental health treatment, including counseling and medication. Now that Wu is resigning from Oregon's first congressional district, there will be a special election to replace him. Due to the results of the 2010 Census, the first district is expected to remain Democratic-leaning, although slightly less so. That would make it easier for Democrats to hold onto Wu's seat. Depending on the timing of the special election, the Democratic party could either choose its candidate by convention or in a special election primary. Already, multiple Democrats had been preparing to challenge Wu in the 2012 primary, including state Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and state Rep. UPDATE: Pelosi has released a statement in response to Wu's resignation: "Congressman Wu's decision today is a recognition of his need to focus on his children and their future," she said. "The timing of his decision is in the best interests of his constituents. Portland, where you only have to be 18 to enjoy a Sam Adams. by Jennie8675309 July 26, 2011 1:20 PM EDT No states allow public consumption of alcohol at age 18 since 1984. nottellin1 July 26, 2011 2:22 PM EDT Sorry, this is too good to pass up. nottellin1, Sam Adams is the name of the Portland Mayor who got caught lying during the election campaign about having relations with a, at the time, a 17 year old boy. The gay part didn't bother me, but lying to hide it & staring into the camera and declaring that he didn't have relations with that boy. There should be drug testing of anyone elected to office before they raise their hand to take the oath that they will place the constituation of the United States above all else and they are fit, morally, and emotionally to take office. We, as a people expect it and demand it from the people we have elected to office. Reply to this comment by jsilver2th July 26, 2011 4:00 PM EDT It's a good thing they don't give spelling tests before letting people vote.. by jsilver2th July 26, 2011 3:24 PM EDT Speaking as an Oregonian (I don't live in Wu's district but I am sitting in it at the moment)- he has always been sort of an enigma in Oregon politics and hard to understand- he certainly won't be the last to get their power confused with their lust- it seems almost to be part of the human condition- and as yet I have not heard he has been charged with any crime- whether he resigned or not he would not have been re-elected as his problems have been brewing for a while including a mass resignation of very qualified staff members several months ago. It seems perhaps too there are 'prescription' drug issues. Oregon has actually been a state that has broken barriers in surprising ways- Wu was the first Chinese American congressman and his several decent terms before all of this deserve some credit and positives. Power is an intoxicant for sure and electing anybody to Congress is about like pouring down a quart of whiskey and handing them the car keys. We had GOP Bob Packwood in the Senate for years who also had to resign for aggressive sexual conduct- the difference The Oregonian our major newspaper concealed it for years and now they pounce on Wu in a moment. is.gd/IMRgL9 -> www.nytimes.com/2011/07/29/us/politics/29congress.html?_r=2 com Surprise Ending to Day of Strong-Arming, Head Counts and Meetings Stephen Crowley/The New York Times Early Thursday, a group of freshman Republicans stood united in support of Speaker John A Boehner's debt crisis bill. John A Boehner's days of strong-arming members on the most important vote of his Congressional career. Suddenly, with no warning and just minutes from a vote Thursday evening, the conversation on the House floor turned to naming post offices. More Politics News Thus began the great pizza seduction. One after another, recalcitrant Republicans were marched into Mr Boehner's office, where he begged, implored and, when that failed, berated them in a desperate effort to win support for his proposal to resolve the debt crisis. Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House whip, bought a pile of pizzas, and asked those members who were against the bill to come on over for a slice, and some haranguing. debt ceiling bill, when it became clear that his Republican members were not going to put him over the top. Some of those who left Mr Boehner's office looked stricken, but said they were unyielding. Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas emerged, saying he was "a bloody, beaten-down no." Other Republicans who had agreed to vote yes went gallivanting through the Capitol -- in red spike heels in the case of Representative Nan Hayworth of New York -- to get before their colleagues or television cameras and help the speaker seal the deal. The pulling of the bill was an unexpected twist in a chaotic day in which staff members for Republicans in the House and Democrats in the Senate slid from desk to desk around Capitol Hill asserting that the outcome of the debt debate would end in their party's favor. Earlier Thursday, it seemed as though Mr Boehner was indeed picking up support for his bill, which cuts spending, raises the debt ceiling and gives his members their coveted balanced-budget amendment. But in the waning hours of debate on the bill, the math appeared to turn against the speaker. Some key lawmakers, like Representative Tim Scott of South Carolina, a member of the freshman leadership team, said he would join the other freshmen from his state and vote no. In the final minutes of the two-hour debate of the bill, right after Representative Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader, offered her closing remarks, Representative Steven C LaTourette, an Ohio Republican who was serving as the presiding officer, announced that the House would turn to other business. even one in Guam, honoring John Pangelinan Gerber, a Vietnam veteran. The whipping effort had begun early in the week, and included pizza parties and one-on-one meetings with freshmen, cellphone calls and text messages from Representative Eric Cantor, the majority leader, and nice dinners over wine. On Thursday, Mr Boehner and his leadership team continued to press their case long before the bill was pulled, Mr Boehner emerged from his ceremonial office to a sea of reporters, whom he met with a mild curse, grabbed members from the floor and marched them through the speaker's lobby in full view of their colleagues for a talking-to back in his den. When Representative Chuck Fleischmann, Republican of Tennessee, came out, he did not look as though he had been picnicking. This continued well into the night, after the bill was yanked. Mo Brooks of Alabama, Jeff Flake and Trent Franks of Arizona, and two freshmen from Illinois, Randy Hultgren and Joe Walsh all met with members of the leadership team. On Thursday night, Mr Walsh said he was still a no vote. After leaving Mr Boehner's office, Mr Gohmert told reporters his objections to the bill. Tea Party before the Republican party, appeared to be putting up the highest walls, though some more senior members were also invited to see Mr McCarthy and his plates of pizza. "It is the most refreshing thing in the world to see what is going on in there," said Representative Jeff Flake of Arizona, an ardent foe of earmarks, the pet projects of lawmakers. "This kind of negotiation a few years ago would have cost $20 billion" in pork barrel projects. Mr Flake would not say whether the quality of the pizza had moved his vote, as he continued to ponder his final move. "I am trying to find a way to vote for this bill," said Representative Bill Huizenga of Michigan. In a parallel, reverse-whip universe on Twitter, Freedom Works, a Tea Party group, began at midday to send messages pressuring members who were on the fence, urging people at home to call the members and tell them to vote no. Sarah Palin of Alaska also got in the game, posting an ominous warning to freshmen about contested primaries on Facebook. Amid the frenzy of arm-twisting, debate and reporters swarming like bees in a sunflower garden, Representative David Wu, the Oregon Democrat who resigned this week amid a sex scandal, sat peacefully on the balcony off the speaker's lobby, awaiting the last votes of his career and pulling on a stogie.
