jpg Regardless of how much closer Obama's budget brings our economy into a balance of payments not seen since 2001, we will continue to run deficits for the next decade, and the national debt will keep growing every year that happens.
Looking at the list of our top international creditors, a few overall characteristics show some interesting trends: Three of the top 10 spots are held by China and its constituent parts, and while two of our biggest creditors are fellow English-speaking democracies, a considerable share of our debt is held by oil exporters that tend to be decidedly less friendly in other areas of international relations.
state gross domestic product data released by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. Obviously, these creditors won't actually take states from us as payment on our debts, but it's fun to imagine what states and national monuments they could assert a claim to. As President Obama -- who is from Chicago -- wrangles over his proposed budget with Congress he may be wise to remember that his home city may be at stake in the deal.
World's Most Innovative Companies 4 Oil Exporters Amount of US debt: $218 billion Share of total foreign debt: 5% Another grouped entry, the oil exporters form another international bloc with money to burn. The group includes 15 countries as diverse as the regions they represent: Ecuador, Venezuela, Indonesia, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Gabon, Libya, and Nigeria. As a group they hold 5% of all American foreign debt, with a combined $218 billion of US treasury securities in their own treasuries.
If friend were to become enemy and Canada were looking to annex some US land to cover the debt though, the country would have an easy time of it. Residents of the three states in our extreme northeast corner should start practicing their French: They might become Qubcois one of these days. Unless we get our spending in check, we risk losing some of our most visually stunning territory (West Virginia, obviously) to our friendly neighbors on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
Report Abuse The point of this article would be what exactly? Poorly written article which clearly looks to stear the reader--and hw does this compare to other nations and their debt? If you put an article like this out, at least put facts to it.
Report Abuse Collapse is not far away for the US We can only rely on the reputation created by the WWII generation and the generosity of foreign nations for so long. Meanwhile our government blows away billions on utterly useless and wasteful projects. The republicans are learning from the disastrous spending habits of Bush, but the left never learns no matter what the situation is. I encourage everyone to actually look at the breakdown of what Obama has spent money on and look at the results. Then ask yourself if any of it is worth being financially owned by a handful of countries that hate us.
A military budget that is more than the next highest spending 15 countries combined. Of course, there are many, many vested interests who want to keep this nonsense going.
it is the largest and best club for wealthy people and their admirers to chat online. you don't have to be rich there ,but you can meet one ,maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends ! Surely we can't exchange our farms, hotels, beaches, ports, companies and futures forever without someone at least for a minute, raising their heads * A Yahoo!
Report Abuse Am I the only one here who doesn't find this to be amusing? This article is a real eye opener for some people that don't seem to realize all democracies in the past have one day fallen. All the "Hybrid" car makers and "alternative" fuel manufacturers are too late. Obviously the US dependence on foreign oil isn't our only problem, but it's definitely part of it. and for the record, i haven't owned a car for some time now. Time to wake up America every time you fill up your gas tank you're feeding the ever hungry beast that rests upon our backs. One day it will devour us all if we don't start making some changes.
Report Abuse The simple solution is to declare bancrupcy and to have all debts forgotten, just like many Americans who borrowed money without thinking and could not pay back. If that happens, then our financial systems will collapse and we will lose our domainantion in world finance forever!
Report Abuse Stop giving money to countries who will never pay us back or help us in our time of need. Jesus, no wonder 3/4 of the world hates America, we owe most of them astronomical amounts of money!
