liz Goodwin - Wed Oct 20, 12:16 pm ET A town near drug cartel capital Juarez, Mexico, had just one applicant for police chief after a spate of killings of public officials in drug-related violence. So now the new chief in Guadalupe, a town of 10,000 residents near the Texas border, is 20-year-old college criminology major Marisol Valles Garca. Public officials have increasingly become the targets of assassination as Mexican cartels try to tighten their grasp on the country.
told the Arizona Republic that getting elected to public office in Mexico "is like winning a tiger in a raffle." "Before, it used to be an attractive job, living on the public payroll," said Dante Haro of the University of Guadalajara. "Now being a town mayor is very difficult, not just because of the economic problems but also this issue of obedience to organized crime."
We are not going to be doing anything else other than prevention." More than 28,000 people have died in the country's drug violence since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the drug cartels in 2006.
Report Abuse This girl either is nuts or has more guts than I have. But like everything in our socioty the real root is greed, take the profit out of it ,take the violance out. It is foolish to believe the demand is going to go away therefor it is time to concider a different approach to how that demand gets meet with the minimum negitive impact on both the Us and Mexican socioties.
Report Abuse right, your beyond the point of prevention when government officials are being mass-murdered. For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security. your afraid to leave your house make these scum afraid to leave theirs also.
Report Abuse Given the gravity of problems the Mexican situation has for the US, & for the people of Mexico as well, there seems to be only one logical solution. It would eleminate a host of problems & both countries could benefit. Perhaps the Mexican people would welcome the concept of becoming part of the US.
Report Abuse I hate to say it, but the poor kid won't live to see 21. There is just too much money being made from the drug problem in the USA. How many people are in prison in the US from NON VIOLENT drug related crime? They claim each prisoner cost the taxpayers $40-80k each. If they REALLY wanted to fix the problem, they would get the pres of mexico to allow US Troops to enter that town and go border town by border town killing the cartels.
Report Abuse The Americans love drugs - always where there is a need, a buyer is waiting to sell. too many people are addicted in our own Country - I wish this woman luck, but it is unfortunate to be in such a violent area, Juarez is the place where the drug cartels are shooting each other & just don't get in the way!
