com founder Marc Benioff has given UC San Francisco $100 million to build a children's hospital on the Mission Bay campus, one of the largest philanthropic gifts in the university's history. The gift by Benioff and his wife, Lynne, is the largest granted for the children's hospital and the fourth-largest gift in the history of the university's hospital. It is based in San Francisco and provides online sales support services. Lynne Benioff, who gave birth to the couple's daughter at UCSF Medical Center in 2008 and serves on the board of the university's foundation, said she and her husband have had a special relationship with UCSF for years. The Benioffs have also endowed several chairs at the medical school. "We can't stop children from getting sick, but we can make sure they have not only the best doctors, which they have now, but they really need a new facility specially designed for kids," she said. "Just because our name is on the hospital, it's not our hospital," she said. "It's the community's hospital and everyone has a stake in it." Mark Laret, chief executive officer of UCSF Medical Center, called the donation "stunning," especially during a tough economic time in which philanthropy has suffered. "This is a legacy for them and their generosity," he said. "But the real legacy will be the thousands and maybe millions of children's lives who will be bettered or saved as a result of their generosity." With the Benioffs' donation, UCSF will still need to raise $280 million to reach its $600 million goal in private donations. The balance of the funds is expected to be achieved through accumulated borrowing, retained UCSF earnings and children's hospital bonds. "We haven't even stuck a shovel in the ground and we're over halfway through our goal, but it's still a lot of money (left to raise)," Laret said.
