\_ advice to UCB fundraiser committee: Ask not how you can
get more donations. Ask why you are not getting donations.
\_ why the fuck should i donate to a place that told me my undergrad
ass wasn't really who they were trying to teach?
\_ look buddy, everyone felt the same way at Cal. This is
why it's been going down for the past 2 decades. It's
a sad legacy of the damn place getting damn too big.
\_ well then I have this to say unto Cal:
"You reap what you sow. You have heard of this phrase?"
Probably not, the bible is banned @Cal. _/

12/26 Mail is being retired, but will mail still be forwarded if we have
a .forward? Also, _why_ is mail being retired?
\_ one more yreason i only hire stanford grads from now on
\_ Like you have any real hiring decision power.
\_ don't recall seeing a discussion on this. it would be nice if mail
           service remains.

9/23 I'm in grad school part time, and the professor I was trying to get
to advise me just sent me "What you suggest (remote, part-time, topic
formulation) doesn't fit my advising style..." Does anyone know
what "topic formulation" might mean in this context? I come with
funding from work, but the topics I can choose are somewhat limited.
Could be a reference to that...

8/10 Check this out. I went to Google Maps, typed in Pasadena then Animal Shelter.
The first few items are "Caltech Housing", for students. I tried this for
other cities like Berkeley and got real animal shelters. Is this some kind
of lame geek joke from Caltech fraternity students?
\_ Learn to format properly. Caltech doesn't really have fraternities,
they have "houses" which are sort of like dorms, co-ops and frats

3/18 I haven't been to Berkeley for a few years. Are there still a Tower
Video store at 2598 Telegraph Ave, and a Blockbuster Video at 2352
Shattuck Ave? I'm wondering if my rental cards are still useful. Thx.
\_ There hasn't been any Towers anywhere in quite some time. The
Blockbuster at Shattuck and Channing still exists, but are you
           ever going to go there?

decrease text size Text Size Stanford University raised more in private donations than any other US college or university last year, even as charitable support for higher education fell steeply nationwide because of the recession, a new survey shows. Four California universities ranked in the top 20 nationally. The 12% decline was the steepest percentage drop since the survey began 40 years ago, said survey director Ann E Kaplan. That and decreases in the value of endowments and income made fiscal 2009 a tough time for most campuses, she said. "It had an impact," she said, referring to the budget cutbacks that many colleges faced last year. Martin Shell, Stanford's vice president for development, said the school was gratified to remain No. "The fact that our donors responded with this level of support is a real testament to the generosity of our alumni, parents and friends," he said. Some of the income counted in the survey included payments on pledges made in prior years, Shell said. The university also managed to collect what he described as a significant portion of $100 million pledged last January by several donors to establish a research institute focusing on energy issues. The largest gift for that institute was $50 million from energy executive and Stanford alumnus Jay Precourt, for whom it was named. UCSF and Berkeley, each an independent campus, nevertheless complement each other in academic disciplines as intended by the founders of the UC System. When one adds up the contributions received by the two institutions, it is pretty impressive. Add Stanford to this SF Bay Area situated academic institutions, one can appreciate why Bay Area remains such an important source of America's best minds. The Harvard Endowment Fund, for example, lost more money speculating in oil in 1998 than their entire 4 year tuition for the Class of 2012. This is not to mention the tax that these activites impose on the economy by driving up living costs at the gas pump and supermarket. They are all at it once again hoping that this time they get it right. facebook * Real Time Economics offers exclusive news, analysis and commentary on the economy, Federal Reserve policy and economics.
