Prisoners who fall into high-risk categories for swine flu will get the shots even while some members of the general public who are not high risk must wait until more of the precious doses are available.
"It's ridiculous that inmates would get it before people who are at high risk for it." Another added, "There is something very wrong with a government who would care for convicted criminals before hard-working taxpayers."
Mark Montigny, D-New Bedford, vice chairman of the Public Health Committee, was not surprised at the response at all. "If you want to get people angry," he said, "tell them someone in prison for a very violent felony is going to get it before their grandmother in a nursing home." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidelines to states listing categories of people who are highest priority for receiving vaccinations against the virulent influenza strain known as swine flu. Christopher Cox, spokesman for the CDC, said the high priority guidance applies to higher-risk people whether they are in a prison, a homeless shelter, a school or a nursing home. "What we're looking at is vulnerability to getting sick and dying of H1N1. That has raised eyebrows in states like Massachusetts and Texas, because criminals with health issues may end up getting the shot before the general public. "Hopefully once the supplies start rolling in in greater numbers, they will be able to expand that to the general public," Cox said.

He said he's not opposed to vulnerable prisoners getting the shot, but if pharmaceutical companies had done a better job, states wouldn't have to choose between the high-risk criminals and the general public for the first doses. The vaccine supply has been unable to meet demand because of production problems. Cox said 252 million doses will be available this flu season. In Texas, for instance, prison officials requested 157,000 doses to cover all inmates, including the 45,000 who are at the front of the line because they fall in that high-priority group of pregnant women, children and those with underlying health issues. They also asked for doses to cover 41,000 staff and medical workers. Getting juveniles, pregnant inmates and those with compromised immune systems covered first is important because prisons house many people in close proximity, said Jason Clark, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. But Montigny said prisons aren't the only breeding ground. Day care centers, schools, colleges and nursing homes also feature populations in close proximity. And while prisoners can get the first round of shots, their jailers cannot. The CDC's priority list includes medical workers who work in prisons, but not the rest of the correctional facility staff.

If my children catch this flu because they couldn't get vaccinated I'm going to be highly pissed! Prisoners should come LAST because the only ones they can infect are each other. If a child gets sick he/she could infect his whole class and even more of the school. children (our future) or prisoners (who CHOSE to throw away their future)?
Since you obviously are an antisemite, perhaps you should stop taking any vaccines or medicines that were developed by Jewish researchers and Nobel Prize winners for Medicine and Science. dragnikla 1:37PM Oct 29th 2009 No one is even concerned that this supposed vaccine hasn't been perfected and that they are most likely testing on people and giving them something similar to the swine flu. The fact that prisoners get it, and the general public is getting it for free tells me that we are just an experiment. people who were perfectly healthy who have gotten the shot have become sick or unable to walk or function except in reverse. When they start crop dusting americans again you will have no control over what viruses you get. I don't think this supposed vaccine is any different then what they have been doing to people in what they call third world countries who they believe have no recourse. Prisoners are often used against their will for scientific purposes, now they just happen to have a general public that is ignorant enough to volunteer.
Garrick 1:54PM Oct 29th 2009 They are getting the vaccine to high risk people, with no discrimination to social status (such as a convict). If you look at it from the stand point of the CDC, they are trying to control this flu by eliminating the high risk group first. Because it is contagious, it wont spread nearly as fast and wide spread if those who are highly susceptible are vaccinated. Controlling this flu is much easier if high risk people are treated first.

Why wouldn't we give our appointed officials this vaccine first? And lets face it, we as Americans decided that convicts have rights too. If you want to change that, start a cause, get into politics, and change it. If you feel this strongly about it, do something about it.
Teresa 9:56PM Oct 28th 2009 H1N1 is a hoax swine flue was a planned pandemic, so was west nile and several other viruses, deliberately made in labs and unleashed in the name of health. Of course the jailbirds will get it first because population control would have to begin there in this age of bad economy. my theory is all the regular flue shots that were given to thousands in a course of 20 or more years have become more suseptable to the man made swine flue. Remeber now they are never going to label the ingredients in any of your flue shots not even the h1n1 shots ok so would you take any prescription drugs if it had no labels or explanation of it's content? I say eat healthy exercise, stay home more often MAKE YOUR KIDS WASH HANDS OFTEN and hand them KLEENEX all the time for sneezes and drippy noses, take germ hand cleaners with you and also wash the handles on those gross out shopping carts, door handles and knobs, car doors, sinks, tubs, toilets especially public ones, they are really nasty and so are the sinks.
