MSI Wind U115 Hybrid In what has turned out to be a strange turn of events, Taiwanese netbook vendor MSI had given us an opportunity to benchtest the up-coming Wind U115 Hybrid back in April however, it seems to have taken an age for the actual model to hit the streets. The unit is built into the same basic chassis as the original U100 and the only noticeable difference is the two-tone silver/black top keyboard/LCD panel bezel surround. MSI has preloaded the unit with Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition SP3 operating system and with its licensing restrictions, it also means you only get the regulation 1GB of memory and 160GB hard drive space. MSI has continued its original association with Western Digital by including the WD1600BEVT hard drive here. The peripheral port count and position is also the same as the U100 - USB, SD card reader, microphone, headphone, VGA and Ethernet on the right-hand-side; two USB ports and the DC power socket on the left along with the fan air grille.
PC Components on May 23rd, 2009 Motherboard manufacturers in Taiwan have let slip that chip producer AMD is set to join rival Intel and move the rest of its chip fabrication to 45-nanometer (45nm) process by the August quarter of 2009. So far, only AMD's top-drawer Phenom II X4 900-series and X3 700-series chips are manufactured at 45nm however, by third quarter, the remainder of AMD's desktop processors will be made using the smaller size. The first chips, arriving in June are expected to be the new Phenom II X2 500-series. The Phenom II X2 550 is expected to run at 31GHz, feature 1MB of L2 cache memory and 6MB of L3 cache. But the balance of the chips will be released after July 1 and includes quad-core Phenom II X4 945 and new 800-series chips and triple-core X3 800-series processors. The chip maker is expected to continue the Athlon brand as a budget processor with no L3 cache memory but similar clock speeds to its higher-performance Phenom models. The Athlon models include the quad-core X4 630-series, the triple-core X3 430-series and the dual-core X2 250 range. Details of the Phenom II X2 950 and the Athlon X2 250 have already been published by XbitLabs. The X4 950 we've already covered briefly while the X2 250 will clock in at 3GHz, feature 2MB of L2 cache memory and no L3 cache. As a result the Athlon X2 250 is likely to perform somewhere between Intel's Pentium Dual Core E5400 and Core 2 Duo E7300 however, we'll confirm this once the chips arrive.
Business Tech on May 23rd, 2009 The Atom processor may have originally been designed to run in low-cost ultra-small netbook computers but that didn't stop PC manufacturers giving the diminutive chip a run in net-tops, the small desktop equivalent of a netbook as well as new all-in-ones, desktop computers that combine an LCD monitor and computer in the one unit, much like the Apple iMac But along with VIA's recently release Nano processor, the Atom is now being released inside new server products from PC giants Dell and Acer.
It's being called the XS11-VX8 ultra-light server and its form factor is so small, it's barely larger than a traditional 35-inch desktop hard drive. Up to 12 of these servers can be housed in a standard two-unit high rackmount chassis and the power consumption of the server is said to be less than 30-watts (30W). Dell says it won't be releasing these to all customers but will be sharing it with its data-warehousing and data-farming partners. Meanwhile, one product that will see general home use is the new media server from Acer.
easystore The Taiwanese PC giant announced the release of its easyStore home server in the US. The new unit will feature the little used Intel Atom 230 processor with 2GB of memory and 1000GB of hard drive storage. The unit is a four-bay network attached storage (NAS) device effectively with storage for up to 6000GB via four removable hard drives. The easyStore AH340-UA230N is available now in the US for $US399.
The story's sources are said to be related notebook computer chip designers, who are optimistic that the good times will roll in the second-half of 2009 as a wider range of netbooks and notebooks begin to flood the market.
