12/5 Does anyone know of a cheap IR detector that can be hooked up to a
windows PC and set to send keystrokes to specific apps? I've cobbled
together a simple media PC and would like simple pause, rewind, etc.
\_ A quick google search for "usb ir sensor" uncovers this:

3/29 A friend wants a PC (no mac). She doesn't want Dell. Is there a
good place that can custom build for you (SSD, large RAM, cheap video
        card--no game)?
\_ As a side note: back in my Cal days more than two decades ago when
having a 387SX made me the only person with floating-point hardware,
           most machines were custom built.

4/22 In the old days there was VGA and life was fine. DVI was quite
tolerable. Then Mac f***ed it up and came up with mini-DVI
and I had to get new connectors. Then DVI to VGA to my
older monitor. Now I have to deal with a bunch more shit
like displayport, mini-displayport, HDMI, and mini-HDMI.

1/26 What's a good motherboard I can get that will fit in a 1U
case, with sata connectors, gig-e ethernet, and lots of
slots for RAM? I also don't want to have to use expensive
double buffered RAM. Can you tell I havne't bought a PC in
        years? thanks.

8/1 PCs are cheaper and offer more bang for bucks. So why do I still prefer

Available Now In many situations, it is necessary to be able to transmit IR signals from a PC. For example, if you use a PC as a TIVO or ReplayTV device, it would be great if a PC could automatically switch channels on a cable box. Also, in many home automation applications a PC needs to control various equipments around the house. That's why we decided to develop Tira, the Transmitting InfraRed Adapter. Girder and allows to capture IR codes right from the original remote and reproduce them later. Of course, it allows you to control applications running on a PC, as Ira-2 does. details) * Compact and elegant design Tira 21 Principal Parts 1 Two IR LEDs for transmitting IR codes 2 Short range sensor for capturing IR codes 3 Long range, 38KHz IR receiver 4 USB "B" Connector 5 35mm jack for connecting external emitters (Center pin "+", sleeve "-") OEM version Picture of Tira 21 OEM Version Tira 21 OEM version is the same device electronically, but comes without a plastic enclosure. here to view mechanical dimensions and layout of the Tira 21 OEM board. Remote Control Extender Tira can be used as a remote control extender. If you connect another Tira (or Ira-2) to the same computer, the second device can be used as an IR input, and all IR codes received by the second device will be immediately reproduced by the main Tira. This way not only you can control your PC from two rooms, but also control all other equipment from two rooms. To the top Computer Interface USB 11 IR modulation frequency Long Range Receiver: 36-40kHz short range receiver: 18-80kHz transmitter: 18-80kHz Distance from the remote control At least 8 meters. Can reach as much as 12 meters depending on the type of the remote control, batteries, and lighting conditions in the room. To the top Tira is designed to work with most remote controls. In fact, we believe it will work with ALL remote controls using modulation frequency in the range of 32kHz to 42kHz. Well, at this time we know of only two companies that use frequency out of the range.
